[07:49] Good morning [09:49] ah-ha! [09:49] you thought you could hide! [09:50] Let's start w/ just assuming I'm basically a noob, I've got US 20.04 up, can ssh into it, & samba & vnc. [09:51] Trying to create a NAS / media server of fam pix / vids. [09:51] did my ssh port fwd thing, then launched tightvnc then dragged/dropped from ext usb attached to Server to (sambda share) folder [09:52] after getting the "permission denied" and doing the 'chmod -R 777' thing it's chugging away [09:52] Q: I closed the TightVNC viewer on my Windows box, but Ctrl-C doesn't stop the ssh connection like it normally does... is this normal? [09:57] hmm... [09:57] lemme ask it differently [09:59] Q2: when copying files from an ext usb connected to the server directly to int hdd on the Server, does the client where I did the copy need to stay up? [10:00] where I did => where I issued === jyak42 is now known as jyak42_zzz [10:42] Brrr, scary [10:43] Err, are you asking if the server is doing the copying of data or the client? How are you issueing a `cp`? === denningsrogue9 is now known as denningsrogue === vlm_ is now known as vlm === jyak42_zzz is now known as jyak42 [18:38] good morning! [18:39] @lordievader, missed ya by [18:39] * jyak42 holds up his fingers about an inch apart [18:39] that much! [18:41] Dabbled off/on w/ Xubuntu, Mint, but I'm new to Ubuntu Server. [18:41] although I've heard of chown and chmod I've never really had to use them. [18:42] oh forgot to mention since Windows changed from BIOS I've had less native installs [18:42] so I've been using VirtualBox for my Linux stuff. Again, up until Ubuntu Server (20.04, if it matters, but doubt it.) [18:43] it *finally* dawned on me that a dedicated machine -- aka non-virtual -- would have full access to all the RAM in the system. [18:43] I *also* finally realized that a "server" wouldn't need to be all that fast. [18:44] brainstorms, I tell ya, brainstorms! [18:47] Depends on what you do with it ;) [18:48] true. This is going to be a "NAS" or "media server" for family pix/vids [18:49] I'm a noob and although I'd love to have some handholding, I'm gonna ignore how I'm setting it up wrong and just ask the simple Q [18:49] I'll hopefully get to iterate and improve the setup [18:50] jyak42: this... will sound like a stupid question but have you considered just installing Nextcloud or such? [18:50] jyak42: this... will sound like a stupid question but have you considered just installing Nextcloud or such on the system? [18:50] for now, I'm still tied to Windows, but if I can backup my pix from my laptop, then I could maybe get a 256GB SSD [18:50] and then simply let them access that throug hthat. [18:50] @teward, nope. but will look into it. I think the reasoning was that I wanted to learn more Linux. ;o) [18:51] i mean [18:51] you can still learn more Linux [18:51] but Nextcloud deployment on a linux server is faist [18:51] So, FWIW, and this is just me, but as someone who does computers and Linux for a living, I would buy a NAS [18:51] but Nextcloud deployment on a linux server is fast [18:51] also what Ussat says [18:51] if you need a NAS, buy a NAS [18:52] Dont get me wrong, I am not trying to discourage learning Linux, but I also EREALLY value simpolicity [18:52] REALLY [18:52] @Ussat, that is becoming more and more obvious, but no pain no gain. Also, I got this box (hp elitedesk) for < $200 [18:52] NAS hasn't gotten cheap enough for me [18:52] jyak42, fair enough, just tossing out my opinion [18:53] @Ussat, it is not going unnoticed and it might even be heeded in a future iteration. Along w/ nextcloud. [18:53] but for the noob Q [18:53] I followed a kid's vid on YT for setting up US & Samba [18:54] Honestly, nextcloud [18:54] it took me a leap of faith to go headless [18:54] but it is working [18:54] i can ssh into it [18:54] and got tighvnc working [18:54] jyak42: just install nextcloud on it [18:54] it's the closets solution to turn the device into NAS [18:54] Being an admin is as much about learning to do things, the SMART way [18:55] not just HOW to do thing [18:55] ^ this [18:55] so when copying 667GB or backups from an ext usb it wouldn't let me kill the local ssh session ( Ctrl-C didn't return me to DOS ) [18:55] and NOT re inventing the wheel [18:56] does nextcloud hit the internet? I'm not sure I want this to be visible outside the LAN. [18:56] Not if you dont want it to [18:56] does it req registration online? [18:56] https://nextcloud.com/ === ijohnson is now known as ijohnson|lunch [18:59] @Ussat, ok. skimmed it. Will dive in deeper later. [18:59] got to to. Thanks for all the fish. peace & 42 === jyak42 is now known as jyak42_DMV [19:12] teward: Ussat: how do you guys install nextcloud? via deb, snap, something else? [19:27] Personally, I dont use it, I was just saying that is what I would use if I did it [19:27] I am not a fan of snaps on servers, so probably a deb [19:27] That said, this is a home NAS, so snap would prob be fine [19:30] alright, thx [19:31] So, my issue with snaps, in a professional datacenter is the idea of ANYTHING restarting or updating outdside of my controll is bad.....period. [19:51] You can control it with https://snapcraft.io/docs/keeping-snaps-up-to-date#heading--controlling-updates [19:52] Or https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/disabling-automatic-refresh-for-snap-from-store/707/269 if you want a snap permanently detached from the store [19:55] Though be aware, under refresh.hold: "After a refresh, the next refresh can be delayed by up to 60 days, after which a refresh will be performed regardless of the refresh.hold value." [19:56] I have a better way, I just totally disble snaps [19:57] snaps, are inherrantly a REALLY bad idea in enterprise servers [19:57] period [19:57] I know that ship has sailed, I get it, thats why I totally rip em out of my installs [19:58] on desktops, I could care less === ijohnson|lunch is now known as ijohnson
