IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> Any support folks online at the moment?01:09
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> ...01:32
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> @Scott Johnson, Networkin' down post recent update‽01:34
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> Tried this - no joy...'sudo apt-get install linux-modules-extra-5.8.0-36-generic'01:46
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> More info, did you try this from a system with network/internet access?01:47
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> Yea...had it connected to my hotspot01:48
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> hmm01:48
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> right?01:48
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> strange issue01:48
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> ball breaker, all been working it on and off01:49
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> probs a different issue. the one I had post update to 5.8, various drivers absent, post manual installation, resolved. Admittedly no pleased, I runt the LTS release to avoid these issues.01:50
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> thought it was worth a shot, can't seem to find another solution01:51
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> Am I the lone ranger here?01:51
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> Anyone else seeing this after today's update?01:51
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> first instance 'sudo apt update'01:52
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> update that broke it came through "Discover" app in Plasma01:53
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> Off chance, I booted into Ubuntu desktop, same issue01:54
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> Mine too, [ALt]+[F2] Konsole01:54
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> 'uname -r'01:55
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> what am I looking for01:55
IrcsomeBot<bsost_Brendon> kernel version number,  if your issue is a similar case of missing drivers, then once version identified, one can install them & utilise them01:58
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> Understood. Been tugging this thread all day, my wife is gonna disown me if I don't pay her some mind01:59
IrcsomeBot<Scott Johnson> will try tomorrow. Thanks for the assist Brendon01:59

derryHey anyone with sys knowhow have 10 min to try help me figure out why something always keeps lagging my system till if I open more than about 10 windows it'll hang. Somtimes I can kill whatever's eating the CPU, but then something else takes over.. now nothing killing the cpu but 5 windows of Brave, a term, this konversation and the software installer.. anyone?  Been going for weeks, and I've wrecked my backups so almost about to reinstall..17:45
derryhelp w 18.04 slow, hard hang if i get over 8 or 9 windows..?18:03
slicktuxAnyone else loose their WiFi drivers and unable to startx after latest update?18:07
derryi pulled mine from the windows installer.. but they are rtk and 2 - 1 for 2.4 & 1 for 5.0.. and have at least one other rtk chip on my raid controller.. and cant open more than 8 or so windows lately ar it slows to a hard lock, and still slow before that with 12GB RAM, & 48GB swap on an SSD, and added a 2nd 48 GB swap on a different SSD a few days ago  to see if it'd  help.. and a 6/12 core extreme CPU....18:19
tomreynderry: start by showing us a kernel log: journalctl -kb | nc termbin.com 999918:22
derrytomreyn: Thank you! ... sec18:23
derryroot@AI7:/home/derry# journalctl -kb | nc termbin.com 999918:24
derryhttps://termbin.com/3dpt18:24
tomreynderry: /dev/sda is possibly a broken disk18:27
tomreynsee the end of your log18:27
tomreyn"Medium Error", "Aborted Command" etc.18:28
tomreynyou can     sudo apt install smartmontools     and run     sudo smartctl -x /dev/sda    and get help with interpreting the output18:29
tomreynderry: also sdb2 contains a broken fat file system, run fsck against it to try to recover data18:31
tomreynand finally your keyboard's USB cable may be broken18:32
derryit is getting old, but not like the CPU is like 14 yrs oldsmartmontools  is newest but there's a Ton of auto-installed no longer required packages...18:32
tomreynfocus on solving hardware problems first, then turn to software18:33
derryHow did you figure that out? I have a few other keyboards.. but been trying not to buy new stuff to save for a $12k USD machine.. few more months...18:34
tomreyn$12k USD ?! my.18:34
tomreynthat must be the latest apple laptop18:34
derrywell, then $8k Quadro and a MB with room for  a 2nd18:34
tomreynthe log you posted reports about problems with "usb usb9-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?"18:35
derryI haven't been using linux much the last 15 years or so.. just playing... till my win 7 license ran out..18:35
tomreynbut then, for a shoirt time, it succeeds to enable the device there: "usb 9-1: Product: Lenovo Black Silk USB Keyboard"18:36
derryya.. I also have a couple external USB HD's18:36
derryevery time I boot, it looks good, but on the last screen that I see for like 1/10 of a second I see a few errors too fast to read..18:37
tomreynsda is a WDC WD20 EARX-00PASB018:38
tomreynreplace, or disconnect it, and your computer will be fast again18:38
derryI see where you're talking about18:39
derryI might have 2 plugged in18:40
derryya, that was when SSD drives were a new thing18:40
tomreynyou have  two WDC drives connected, sda and sdb18:41
tomreynsdc is a 240 GB KINGSTON SV300S3 BBF0, sdd is a 512 GB ADATA SX90018:41
derryya, a couple years after I bought the system new, I bought one SSD drive and couple more years, another, those are sda  and sdb18:42
tomreynwell, you know what you need to do, right18:42
user|38431Hello everyone, I am a new Linux user. I would like discuss an issue with touchpad. When using double finger scrolling, the cursor sometimes gets dragged in the middle of the page instead of scrolling. Did anybody had this problem or know how to solve it?18:43
derryI'm thinking buy 2 new SSD drives, probably old style since I can't seem to get over 6 GT(?)/s  ...?18:44
derrybut I want to keep the spending down and hopefully have the $12k in another 5 months or so.. I've never saved money before in my life... but I really want to do this AI project I have in mind..18:46
tomreynthe mainboard manual states "6 x SATA 3.0 Gb/s ports (black)", "2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (gray)"18:46
tomreynso fast storage media should be attached to the gray sata ports18:48
derryya, the 2 6 Gb/s are the ones on the Realtek RAID built in that I never used.. and the old SSD drives do 6 Gb/s already, right?18:48
tomreynthe gray ones are on a Marvell 88SE9128 PCIe controller, according to your mainboard specification usmmary at https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1366/Sabertooth_X58/e5995_sabertooth_X58.pdf18:49
tomreynso nt realtek18:49
tomreynfor hardware support, try ##hardware18:49
derrysorry, you're of course right, but there is some other realtek chip in there besides the 2 in the wifi card, I',m pretty sure..18:51
tomreynAudio and ethernet NIC18:52
tomreynyou could probably save most of your money and instead rent a cloud system for the AI stuff just while you need it. and pass the rest to the homeless.18:52
derryI'm paranoid about working on the cloud.. I've been programming since 78 and AI since 86, and have some reasonable thoughts (to me) to write the AI.. but nobody to talk to for decades, since nobody else I know is into programming, nevermind AI..18:55
derrybut if you think I could go cheaper.. I was still thinking to use this 13/14 yr old husk for print and backup server, the AI workstation will probably be as secure as I can make it.. I was into linux for years, but started with kernel 0.98 if memory serves..18:58
derrymy plan seems rational and I've been going over it for years.. but with nobody to even bounce ideas off for sanity checks..19:01

derrybut I *totally* appreciate your help.. it's been a pain using parts everywhere.. I have like 10 1TB drives lying around, and a number of bigger ones and a bunch of smaller ones..19:03
tomreyni'm sure you can find AI folks here on freenode. start by bringing it up on the channel of your favourite programming language or ML / AI framework19:06
tomreynbut we're OT19:06

derryI went to AAAI 87 annual in Seattle w/ instructor and some classmates bummed a ride.. recently found out there's a  Canadian (CAAI?) that also (now anyway) has annuals, and lucky, next is in May, here in Vancouver, so maybe I'll finally meet people I can talk with in person after a decade or two with noone to really chat with, but I was brought up basically socially isolated, and so not so great at social..19:14
derryI've dabbled in a couple dozen languages, 6502 asm was my fav, but I totally ....  oh ya, sorry, OT. I'll check others a bit later.. just got the irc client installed.. used to use BitchX.. opps.. I'll shut up. But Thank you so much again. It's been weeks or a month or 2, and you probably nailed in in like 2 minutes... thank you sincerely - Andrew19:27
derryWould you - Or Anyone(?) be willing to try to figure out how to fix the package repositories that I broke (installing stuff (Nvidia cuda drivers and couple others) that you have to add repositories for) and wrecked it so it always complains now, but still mostly works...? about 4 lines re skipping xxx as repository doesn't provide (misspelt?) and Skipping ... doesn't support arch. 'i386' I'm sure your time is valuable so I understand if not..20:10
derrynever knew time could be valuable till some years back..20:10
QuantosHi guys, I need some help.  KUbuntu 20.4.1 LTS x6420:19
QuantosWhy does my audio keep defaulting to the TU106?20:19
QuantosHow can I disable or remove that?20:19
QuantosEvery time I turn on a monitor it keeps stealing the audio from my soundcard20:20
derrymaybe plug it into a different HDMI (not AHC(?)) - not sure20:24
QuantosI don't use any audio through my graphics connections20:24
QuantosI have better speakers than my monitors do20:24
derryyou don't use HDMI on a port labelled with AHC?20:25
QuantosWhen I run lspci -vv I see this for audio https://pastebin.com/M95fSAZk20:26
QuantosNo, I don't, all of my monitors are Display Port20:26
QuantosI make it sound like I have so many of them, only three20:27
QuantosI'm just wondering if I really need to recompile the kernel or if there's an easier to block that20:28
QuantosOr if there's an easier WAY to block that20:29
derrysorry, it's stb/dvi not ahc... but not sure if display ports do that..20:29
QuantosShould I try it with HDMI and test?20:29
derryand sorry if that's not it.. that was my only thought.. you could.. just not the stb/dvi one.. though I could be confused and you might try a couple to be sure20:30
QuantosOkay, it's worth a shot, I have the cables so it might be better than a recompile20:31
QuantosThanks for your input derry20:31
derrycause I think onlu one usually does it (on HDMI)20:31

derryQuantos: back when I started using Linux about Kernel 0.98, possibly 0.99.. aside from downloading 35 3.5" "floppies" you had to recompile the kernel every time you installed.. still not totally used to this module and snap stuff...20:54

derrynever tried budgie, bu ubuntu seemed quite popular... let me no what its like if you try it..  I've got so much ancient hardware I reinstalled 18.04 LTS about 7 or more times and 20.04 a couple times before I slapped myself and used timeshift to make a solid post-install restore point. (20.04 LTS maybe me, but seemed buggy.. maybe tried too early.. but this is probably OT, sorry21:00
anatoliy__i like it21:03
anatoliy__its pretty simple and stuff21:03
derryif there is a god it may have smiled at me once, per se. but u refer to something else?  Whats different about kubuntu?21:05
derrychat tons, depending on yer requirements/desires... like end to end encryption, certified, open src, email, msg, sms, phone, video, basicly all platforms.. thought this is great, then noticed a bunch of others..21:08
