ducassenikolam: unfortunately the nature of x forwarding makes it a fair bit slower than doing it locally08:56
nikolamducasse, it's not the question of if X forwarding is slower, but before some update in 20.04 it was very fast, since it it ssh-X localhost session, and afterwards in 20.04 and 20.10 it is slowly opening Altril. Question is is it about Altril or some other problem, since it were very fast before and is not only about the nature of ssh -X localhost itself .08:59
ducassenikolam: i see. could you try opening a file manager remotely and see how fast atril opens from that if you try to open a pdf file?09:04
drag0niusis there some canonical way to make bash read PAM environment in Ubuntu?09:19
nikolamducasse, Thunar file manager (Xfce/xubuntu here) also takes a long time to start via ssh -X localhost) and nautilus too. And yes, also from file manager opened cia ssh -X localhost, Atril takes a long time to open.. Like they all are waiting for something that is already there..09:22
nikolamThunderbird itself opens fast.. via ssh -X localhost.09:22
nikolamThese are the messages when starting slow apps via ssh -X localhost, that are supposed to be starting fast: https://pastebin.com/74cb7KXr09:28
nikolamSeems like they all require , or some library they are using to access "accessibility bus" : "Couldn't register with accessibility bus" and that slows down , some in-library / distro build-in waiting, that slows down all apps..09:30

adrian_1908Are problems like these (after an upgrade) known to occur on occasion? And can I assume that hardware of this age — working with 18.04 — will (with some manual tweaks if necessary) keep working with 20.04?12:01

rhaguHi, after a power outage, a remote server does not boot anymore, it has its EFI partition on a thumb drive. I can see UEFI Shell output via KVM and change bios settings. The thing is: the partition on the thumb drive seems to be gone, although the efi device tree shows the thumb drive. What can I do? zen_coderahh I found it: so I do a checkmark in `Use LVM with the new Ubuntu installation` & `Erase disk and install Ubuntu -`14:43
zen_coderand then ubuntu will be installed on my specified hardisk via an LVM, which I can later resize, right?14:43
ExcessiveAggroSo all good?14:43

ExcessiveAggroOne sec I'm going to get you the steps14:45
oxekI did try searching on the ubuntu webpage, but nothing of use turned up14:45
ExcessiveAggrozen coder - looks like you are correct that a custom lvm install is not available from the GUI installation.  You can do an automatic lvm install but you won't have control over the partitioning scheme14:48
ExcessiveAggroyou have me curious though... i wonder what it creates for you.  I'm going to do an install and see14:48
zen_coderoh yes, thanks14:49
ExcessiveAggroahh it tells you what it's going to do at the end.14:49
ExcessiveAggrocheck this out...14:49
zen_coderExcessiveAggro ?14:50
ExcessiveAggrohttps://imgur.com/a/AfhHube14:50
ExcessiveAggroLooks like it creates a single volume group called vgubuntu and two logical volumes called root and swap_114:51
zen_coderand root will contain my home dir?14:52
ExcessiveAggroyes sir14:53
ExcessiveAggroyou can relocate the home directory pretty easily later if you like14:53
zen_coderthis is what I want, I have multiple hard disks and and want to combine then via LVM14:54
zen_coderso all stuff can be placed inside the home dir14:54
ExcessiveAggroI see.  Are you wanting the disks to be raid or Jbod14:55
zen_coderwhat is jbod?14:55
zen_coderthere should be no backup of the data14:55
ExcessiveAggrojust a bunch of dissk14:55
zen_coderno raid needed14:55
ExcessiveAggroI need someone to factcheck me here... but if you just link a bunch of disks in to a volume group, and you lose one disk... is the entire data pool corrupt?14:56
ExcessiveAggroI'm pretty sure you lose everything14:57
ExcessiveAggrobut if you are making backups then maybe you are ok with it14:57
zen_coderI dont make backups14:57
zen_coderI also do not care about the data14:58
ExcessiveAggroAhh I see then LVM with just a bunch of disks underneath will be just fine14:58
zen_codera lot of temp data will be there, build artifacts14:58
ExcessiveAggrobut restating so you dont get mad at me later :)  If you have a bunch of disks in a volume group and one of those disks die, the entire volume is corrupt.14:59
ExcessiveAggroThere may be more elegant ways of doing this but here is how i would handle it...14:59
ExcessiveAggroI would do manual install and just mount swap and '/'.  make root whatever size you like to cover your base applications.  Then once the OS is up and running i would create the volume group with the remaining space on your first disk and all the additional disks.  Then mount that new volume group to your home directory15:00
ExcessiveAggrosorry there is an easier way in your situation...15:01
ExcessiveAggro.just do the lvm install we talked about earlier and it will create one VG for everything15:01
ExcessiveAggrothen add all your other disks to that volume group once the OS is up15:01
ExcessiveAggromake sense15:03
zen_coderExcessiveAggro: can I separate the LV from linux root for home?15:03
ExcessiveAggroof course - you could crate a new LV for home and mount it to /home15:04
zen_coderseparate linux OS installation and the Home dir15:04
ExcessiveAggrohard to explain via text.... but it looks like the installer is going to create one VG with your entire disk added to that VG.  So that disk wil be dedicated to '/' and swap15:05
ExcessiveAggrobut you can move home to a different LV and/or VG after install15:05
ExcessiveAggroif you dont care about that entire disk being dedicated to '/', not a problem15:05
ExcessiveAggrohope that makes sense15:08
zen_coderI just do as you said15:08
ExcessiveAggroI feel powerful all the sudden ;)15:09

ExcessiveAggroalmost there... sec15:20
ExcessiveAggroThis is what it's doing - https://imgur.com/a/lt8UDzd15:21
ExcessiveAggroit doesnt say it's creating a physical volume so that layer may not be there...15:22
ExcessiveAggrobut the answer is ... yes that looks correct.  Make sure you dont need the dat aon nvme0n1 because you are about to wipe it out15:22
zen_coderso the size of the root dir will be the whole disk?15:23
ExcessiveAggrosize of the whole disk - minus the space it uses for swap and minus the space it uses for the efi boot partition15:24
ExcessiveAggroand /home will live within the '/'15:24
ExcessiveAggrolet me show you a modified diagram of what you will have after you add the other disks15:25
ExcessiveAggroThis is what you will do after install - https://imgur.com/a/DyqImNT15:27

subfjoerheks: nm it was the --dev that did it18:19
subfjweird18:19
oerheksi was just checking..18:19
tomreync0fe: pracitically, in the scenario you described, you probably want to add three groups, whoich could be named editors1, editors2, editors3, one ofor each of those directories, and to each group you add the users who should be able to access these specific directories. then you chown (recursively) each of the directories to the specific gruop, and chmod (also recursively, though you may need to do this differently for directories and files) the18:19
tomreyndirectories so that the group you assigned to each gets the permissions it should have (you mentioned +w, writing).18:19
oerheksoh good18:19

c0feaccording to users18:21
subfjoerheks: how come the --dev works on the service but --start works when running the command manually?18:21
tomreync0fe: you can do so using ACL (access control lists, an extended / advanced permissions mechanism)18:26
tomreynhttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Access_Control_Lists#Examples18:28
c0fetomreyn: is this something i can write up on my computer and simply upload like a config file?18:29
tomreync0fe: it's something you can write up on your computer, and after enabling ACL on the file system in question, just run on the remote computer.18:31
c0fetomreyn: this can run on a LXD container that runs Ubuntu 20.04?18:32
tomreyni don't see why not.18:32

RoseBusokay i fixed my system by reverting from 5.8 kernel version back to 5.418:49
RoseBusidk why but 5.8 broke all my drivers18:49

RoseBusubuntu software center popped up and i clicked "install" without reading... 5.8 was among those installed18:53

subfjleftyfb: okay interface is back, let me try macchanger again20:45
ExcessiveAggrotyranttyler - give me one sec20:46

ExcessiveAggrotyranttyler - OK looks like this machine has a single physical nvme drive being used for the OS - /dev/nvme0n120:50

ExcessiveAggronvme1n1 & nvme2n1 - each is 280GB in size20:51
tyranttylerYeah I seen that20:51
tyranttylerWhen I try to do sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/nvme0n1 it says its being used by the system20:51
subfjokay i have the new mac set and changed, where do i set that permanently? within the netplan settings? make a manual entry for mac address in there I take it?20:51
ExcessiveAggrodont yhou need a partition before you can format it ?20:51
tyranttylerI suppose so, it just didn't tell me that... Should I change the commands that are shown in the pdf?20:52
ExcessiveAggroi.e. sudo fdisk /dev/nvme1n120:52
ExcessiveAggrothen "n" for new partition20:53
tyranttylerDo I sudo into there then :20:53
ExcessiveAggroyes you need to sudo to run fdisk20:53
ExcessiveAggrosudo fdisk /dev/nvme1n120:53
=== lumpybump40 is now known as lumpybump
ExcessiveAggroonce you are in fdisk you can hit 'p' to see if there is a partitino on that device20:54

ExcessiveAggroif you hit P what does it say20:55
ExcessiveAggroim assuming nothing20:55
ExcessiveAggrono partitions20:55
tyranttylergotcha20:55
ExcessiveAggroif so - lets create one by hitting n20:56
tyranttylerGotcha20:56
tyranttylerprimary ?20:56
ExcessiveAggrothen its going to ask you a few questions... defaults work20:56
ExcessiveAggroprimary is fine20:56
tyranttylerok20:56
ExcessiveAggrowhen its done you will hit 'w' to write changes to disk20:56
tyranttylerok done https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/jDHsb5rRR2/20:57
ExcessiveAggrotyranttyler - just realized that was a dos partition table... and you likely want GPT20:58
tyranttylerOh gotcha20:58
ExcessiveAggroso we need to backtrack a little...20:58
tyranttylerOk20:58
ExcessiveAggrosudo fdisk /dev/nvme1n120:58
ExcessiveAggro"g"20:58
ExcessiveAggrowhich will create a new GPT partition table20:58
tyranttylerok20:58
ExcessiveAggrothen the same steps as before - "n" for new partition - "w" to write changes to disk20:59
tyranttylerthen do I w to write it20:59
tyranttylerooook20:59
ExcessiveAggroif you go back in... sudo fdisk /dev/nvme1n1 you should see the new partition listed as /dev/nvme1n1p121:00
tyranttylerhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/CJXrxnKBCm/21:00
tyranttylerok I will do that now21:00
ExcessiveAggrohit "p" to print the current partitions21:00
tyranttylerYuo21:01
tyranttylerYup its there21:01
ExcessiveAggro"q" to exit - now lets format it21:01

tyranttylerok I will move from this point and follow the guide21:02
ExcessiveAggrosudo mount /dev/nvme1n1p1 /data21:02
tyranttylerok21:03
ExcessiveAggroand you get the idea from there21:03
ExcessiveAggrothat guide is kinda wonky....21:03
tyranttylermmmh21:03
tyranttylerSo do I do these 3 then21:03
ExcessiveAggroit doesnt tell you to edit fstab which means that partition wont automount21:03

ExcessiveAggrothose last two i combined in to one statement with sudo chown ubuntu:ubuntu /data21:04
ExcessiveAggrobut you can do them separate if you want21:04
tyranttylerOK I just got to sudo mount /dev/nvme1n1p1 /data21:05
tyranttylerSo now I install tailscale21:05
tyranttylerand should be good from there?21:05
ExcessiveAggroyup21:05
tyranttylerok21:05
ExcessiveAggrobut you will want to edit /etc/fstab to automount that drive again later21:05
ExcessiveAggrothats not in the guide but needed.  if you ever reboot you will lost it21:05
ExcessiveAggrolose21:05
tyranttylerok so when do I do that, after which step?21:06
ExcessiveAggroyou can do it now... let me get you a link21:06

tyranttylerI appreciate your help21:07

ExcessiveAggroI need to get better with stringing commands together like that.21:10

tyranttylerSorry I feel like my grand mother right now... I'm still learning how to use linux servers :/21:11
ExcessiveAggroyou need the backside of that echo21:11
ExcessiveAggrothe one TJ did is write on21:11

TJ-FYI, for building new installs from chroots there's a neat tool "genfstab" in the arch-install-tools package that is very handy. E.g. for a chroot rootfs at /target/ with sub-mounts mounted you could do "genfstab /target > /target/etc/fstab " to get a fully filled table21:12
RoseBushello, after updating to kernel version 5.8 i had major driver issues, i used apt to remove the 5.8 installation, and reverted back to 5.4, now i'm having issues with dual-monitors21:12

TJ-sorry, package is arch-install-scripts21:12
ExcessiveAggrobreak down of what that command does.... it echos everything in the quotes to the file listed after >> which is /etc/fstab21:13
TJ-RoseBus: possibly due to GPU driver issues; is it Nvidia by chance?21:13
tyranttylergotchaaaa so I don't open that file, I run that as a command21:13
oerheksRoseBus, but your fix was simple..21:13
oerheksRoseBus, with that kernel 5.8 update, it breaks broadcom seriously, but https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1910555 there's a workaround toward the bottom21:13
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1910555 in bcmwl (Ubuntu) "Driver build error on kernel 5.8, but works on 5.4" [Undecided,Confirmed]21:13

ExcessiveAggrobefore the echo21:14
TJ-ExcessiveAggro: $() is calling a sub-shell and inserting its stdout21:14

ExcessiveAggroor you can use TJ method which pipes everything through another command that you can sudo lol21:16
tyranttylerI checked and its in there21:16
ExcessiveAggroI remember seeing a meme somewhere talking about how many commands you could get in a single linux line... would love to see that competition21:16
tyranttylerthats awesome ha21:17
ExcessiveAggrotyranttyler | have to leave but i think you can get back to your guide now21:17

tyranttylerthank you very much for the help21:17
ExcessiveAggroyou bet - i learned something from TJ so was good for both of us21:18
tyranttylerenjoy your day21:18
ExcessiveAggrobtw that VM you created has another 280gb nvme drive in it... may want to partition that and use it some day since you're paying for it :)21:18
tyranttyleryeah probably will, maybe use it for perforce21:19
tyranttylerone question21:20
tyranttyler# Upload source from your workstation via scp to your new AWS instance21:20
tyranttylerWill this command put it on the correct partition we created?21:20
tyranttylerscp -i FILELOCATIONLOCALLY.pem FILELOCATIONLOCALLY.zip ubuntu@SERVERIP21:20
tyranttyler:/home/ubuntu21:20
TJ-tyranttyler: if you want it in /data/ you'd use ubuntu@SERVERIP:/data/21:21
TJ-tyranttyler: that assumes 'ubuntu' as write permissions21:21
tyranttylerWill that put it on nvme1n1p1 ?21:21
TJ-tyranttyler: no, it'll put it on '/data/' - whatever that mountpoint is21:22
TJ-tyranttyler: if you've mounted /dev/nvme1n1p1 /data/ then yes it would21:22
tyranttylerBecause when I unzipp it in the later steps and follow the Setup project section, I got disk size full issues...21:23
tyranttylerOk21:23
tyranttylerYeah I believe we mounted /dev/nvme1n1p1 /data/21:23
tyranttylerHow could I check its mounted?21:23
TJ-tyranttyler: "mount" or "findmnt /data"21:24
TJ-tyranttyler: if it isn't the "sudo mount /data"21:24
tyranttyleryup its mounted21:24
tyranttyler"/data  /dev/nvme1n1p1 ext4   rw,relatime"21:25
subfjubuntu 20.04 server need this machine to show its hostname when running an ip scan from another system on the network, how would i do this?21:25
tyranttylerso that means I should change the command to:21:25
tyranttylerscp -i FILELOCATIONLOCALLY.pem FILELOCATIONLOCALLY.zip ubuntu@SERVERIP21:25
tyranttyler:/data/21:25
tyranttylermmmh permission denied when I tried that21:27
TJ-tyranttyler: so 'ubuntu' doesn't have the correct permissions on /data/ to write/add files21:27
tyranttylergotcha21:27
tyranttylerdo I chmod ? lol21:28
TJ-tyranttyler: I just looked back; you issued the chown/chmod commands BEFORE rather than AFTER mounting /data/ which is why you have this issue. Issue those commands again21:28
tyranttyleraw gotcha21:28
tyranttylerthese two: "sudo chgrp ubuntu /data" "21:29
tyranttylersudo chown ubuntu /data"21:29
TJ-tyranttyler: when you do it before you only change the empty mountpoint directory. When you mount another file-system at that point its permissions overlay and hide those of the mountpoint on the parent file-system21:29
tyranttylerok gotcha so now I will run those two commands21:30
TJ-remember that /data/ is in your root file-system but when you mount a file-system there, /data/ is actually the 'root' directory of the mounted file-system (you can tell its the 'root' due to the lost+found directory being there)21:30
tyranttylerOk well I just ran those two commands then in a new terminal window ran: "scp -i FILELOCATIONLOCALLY.pem FILELOCATIONLOCALLY.zip ubuntu@SERVERIP:/data/"21:31
tyranttylerand its uploading..21:32
tyranttyleris this correct?21:32
TJ-tyranttyler: it sounds to be21:32
tyranttylerOk ill find out when I try to install unzip and unpack the source files21:32
garttLooks like I found an ubuntu bug: In Settings --> Power --> Wi-Fi Turn off Wi-Fi to save power, if you slide the toggle to off, it turns off wifi, even though it's simply supposed to prevent wifi from turning off to save power21:38
JmaJeremyi think that is the intended functionality, maybe it's just not well described in the settings21:40
jeremy31It has been that way for a few years21:40
JmaJeremyit's just saying, you can save power by turning off wifi, and then it gives you a shortcut to turn off the wifi21:41
=== disillusion- is now known as disillusion
garttThen why would anyone look to turn off the wifi in power management to save power? Then should dimming the screen be in power management as well, for the same reasons?21:42
tyranttylerI wouldn't;t think you would want WIFI to auto turn off to save power..21:42
garttNeither would I, but it's right below the screen lock time settings21:43
tyranttylerBut it does sound like an odd GUI placement for sure... I suppose...21:43
tyranttylerbut again this coming from a guy who just learned how to mount a disk using terminal... so im not one to talk21:44
garttIf that's not the issue, looks like ubuntu is turning off my wifi card sometimes (sometimes I can SSH to the box from inside the LAN, sometimes I can't), but then when I go and physically log into the box, the wifi card wakes up and all is good for a few hours or even the day21:44

TJ-subfj: one way is via multicastDNS, which the avahi-daemon does the advertising for22:07
subfjthanks22:08
TJ-subfj: on the clients you'll need 'libnss-mdns' that'll add itself into /etc/nsswitch.conf as a hosts: resolver too22:09

subfjTJ so I have a raspberry pi running ubuntu 20.04 server, when i scan the network i want it to show its ip which it does and responds to ping but does not show me the hostname of the pi. so I am making these changes on the pi that you are referencing22:10
oerhekssubfj, more likely an issue for opencanary?22:10
TJ-subfj: what do you mean by "scan"?22:11
subfjoerheks: well i want it to be louder and give away a hostname if i can22:11
subfjTJ like run an ip scan with lanscan, advanced ip scanner or angry ip scanner or such22:12
