rigelyeah, i said gui in my question.00:14
rigeli use the command line plenty but i also like having something i can just press a button for sometimes, instead of trying to parse a manpage00:15

s3nd1v0g1usi have friends who claim its silly to pay for something they can get for free.00:36
gordonjcpthat sounds like something for #ubuntu-offtopic, if anywhere00:37
gordonjcpwhy would you use public wifi, why not 4G?00:37
s3nd1v0g1usfair enough.00:37

s3nd1v0g1usand limited.00:37
gordonjcpI use 4G instead of ADSL00:38

My memory is bad, so whenever I see a mismatch I thought "oh, it changed again".02:17

MarchHareSilly question, but I just updated a server from Ubuntu 18.04 to Ubuntu 20.04.1 and now it's doing something wierd with cifs/smb mounts (a NAS drive is being mounted, not the server isn't serving samba shares) where the filesystem driver is mangling filenames that apparently have unicode in them, and the linux machine can't even access the file (but windows can)07:33
MarchHareLike I can see the file, but there's wierd substitutions when viewed on the linux box.07:34
MarchHareCrazy. This seems to be the issue. Why wouldn't that be installed by default if it was in previous distros by default: https://askubuntu.com/questions/519796/unable-to-mount-cifs-with-iocharset-utf807:46

jordyHi, the Nvidia driver(340) shipped with the Ubuntu installer isn't supported anymore and fails to install while still in the installer. It's a GeForce 9400(mac) what is recommended to do?15:09
jordyI tried ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa but ubuntu-drivers still only recognizes the 340 driver and only lists that :/15:10
jordyUbuntu 20.04 LTS. Usb installer.15:11
ExcessiveAggrojordy - interesting... I just installed 20.04 on an nvidia system a couple weeks ago without issue.  Let me see what version I'm running15:12
ExcessiveAggroI must have upgraded because I'm running 460.32.0315:13
jordyThat's the fun part, I installed Ubuntu 20.04 a few weeks ago because I was messing around with ubuntu. It instaleld just fine, today it starts erroring while in the installation progress. Post install error.15:14
jordyI tried to reinstall Ubuntu a few times but again and again the error pops up15:14
ExcessiveAggroare you sure 20.04 ships with 340? thats really old15:14
jordyyes15:15
ExcessiveAggroare you erroring on install or can you get to a command prompt after install?15:16
ExcessiveAggroI ask because this post looks pretty good for getting the newer driver installed via cmdline15:16
ExcessiveAggrohttps://linuxize.com/post/how-to-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-20-04/15:16
jordyIt's erroring on install, Ubuntu works fine but apt-get upgrade resulted dkpg error where I had to use --configure -a which showed15:19
jordyhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/KsM3qBbT4T/15:19
jordywhich is directly after I installed Ubuntu.15:20
ExcessiveAggroJordy is this you -> https://askubuntu.com/questions/1307374/ubuntu-20-04-nvidia-graphics-unusable15:23
knackebrothello, is this the right place to ask? I'm running focal server, and need to install libcurl3-gnutls:i386 for srcds, but get this error: https://pastebin.com/uLDeNHK5 , I don't have any other repositories enabled for i38615:23
jordyNo that's not me but they do seem to have the same issue as I hae15:23
ExcessiveAggroThe solution on that post was because the latest kernel can't compile that driver - so you have to revert to an older kernel15:24
jordyI can't change kernel as the USB installer installs this kernel by default15:24
ExcessiveAggrobut I'm still confused why the installer is dropping 340 on your system... maybe because the new driver doesnt support that older card?15:24
jordyApparently. It's not modern hardware. But this should still be supported somehow..15:25
ExcessiveAggroI think the bottom of that link I sent you talks about how to revert to an older kernel15:26
ExcessiveAggrobut maybe thats after install... and you are saying you cant even complete the install?15:26
jordyIt installs just fine even with the error, nvidia-340 doesn't build. Ubuntu boots up fine. its just conflicting with apt-get upgrade and it keeps wanting to install 340 even though apparently the kernel doesn't support it anymore15:27
ExcessiveAggroWe might need to wait for one of the higher ranking ubuntu ninjas to respond here :)15:29
ExcessiveAggrothe first answer in that post talks about holding down shift to get to an older kernel, thjen researching how to remove hte other kernel so it doesnt try to revert to it after reeboot15:29
jordyuname -r replies 5.4.0-42-generic. Just great.15:29
jordyWhich is what they recommend to use in that AskUbuntu post.. :(15:30

jordyI'm quite confused now, when I try to install linux-headers-5.4.0-42-generic I get errors and messages like buildiing initial module for 5.8.0-38. While uname -a tells me that I use 5.4.0-42. What is going on here?15:55
jordyhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/wX8Q8rs8WW/15:55
Seidunawaveform: worked like a charm, thank you so much.16:00
waveformjordy, sounds like you have both 5.4.0-42 and 5.8.0-38 (or bits of the latter anyway) installed. What does dpkg -l "linux-image-*" tell you is installed? (look for "ii" prefix)16:01
waveformSeiduna, excellent :)16:01
EriC^^jordy: it looks like the headers package is already installed, but it's trying to fix the broken package related to 5.8, try "dpkg -l | grep -v ^ii | nc termbin.com 9999"16:01
EriC^^paste the link it gives you here16:01
jordyEriC^^, https://termbin.com/wb2g16:04
jordywaveform, https://termbin.com/8miw16:05
jordyApparently both kernels are installed even though I installed Ubuntu just a few minutes ago :o16:06
waveformmight be that u-u (unattended-upgrades) has installed (some) security patches in the background (which would likely include the new kernel)16:06
jordyThat would mean the most recommended fix would be to change to the 5.4 kernel and just stick to that, since future kernsls will keep having this issue?16:09
waveformit's possible that not everything required for the module build on the 5.8 kernel was installed at the time dkms tried to build. Might be interesting to check if linux-headers-5.8 is installed (dpkg -l "linux-headers-*") and install that if it's missing (then apt install -f to fixup the nvidia driver install - I hope anyway, I'm not at all familiar with the nvidia dkms setup unfortunately)16:15

Kevinalternately, is there still a way to use d-i with ubuntu 20.10?16:35

Seidunahey waveform. well that i can understand, but i must say is is most dissapointing, for me at least. but ok, snap it is, if i fail do build it. I still have more questions to move along. thanl yuou16:39

KevinWaV: neither is really a great option. it's a good idea to run install but not all software has it or keeps it reliable for all files16:43
Kevinideally you'd make a local package, but that's nontrivial16:44

Kevini'll just delete the raid arrays and reboot, as long as lvm works I can work around installer bugs by moving it afterwords16:47
Kevinbets that the problem is the lvm dialog and that doesn't work either? :/16:48
Kevinyep, problem is the lvm dialog16:50
Kevinso I guess i'll go back to the desktop installer, disable internet access to work around the bug that fails when installing drivers, install without any storage, and manually migrate the boot process after?16:51

Kevin(because it's more likely to install the correct desktopy hardware support packages than me guessing if they have changed)16:52

FortunateSonAnyone know how to solve an error I'm getting on a Ubuntu 16.04 box when I am trying to enable kernel live patching?  the error is this: error executing enable: cannot enable machine: bad server status 401 (URL: https://livepatch.canonical.com/api/machine-tokens) server response: unauthorized20:27
FortunateSonmy googling so far has led me to mess with the /etc/machine-id file and create a new one but to no avail.  I have also removed and reinstalled the canonical-livepatch snap package20:29
sarnoldFortunateSon: did you get a token from https://auth.livepatch.canonical.com/ ?20:31
makara1oerheks: i did try that, and disable20:41
makara1all that does is bring up the GUI20:41
makara1i've now come to the OS to sort out the matter20:41
oerheksmakara1, no idea then..20:42
makara1there must be some way of disciplining a misbehaving app, besides uninstalling it20:42
makara1doesn't everyone use teamviewer?20:43
oerheksnope, not me.20:43

makara1EriC^^: i can't kill the daemon20:44
MarchHareAnyone know the deal with 20.04.1's console background turning from black to blue just before throwing up a login?20:46
EriC^^makara1: did you try "teamviewer –daemon disable" ?20:47
MarchHareThis is on the Server install. It wasn't changing before I upgraded.20:47
makara1ok, sudo did it20:47
makara1i don't quite understand why that's necessary. I didn't start it as sudo20:47
sarnoldMarchHare: I don't recall ever seeing that in the last ~eight years20:47
EriC^^makara1: the server is running as the root user20:48
MarchHaresarnold: You've seen it? How did you disable it when it happened?20:48
makara1EriC^^: ok, when i installed it20:48
FortunateSonsarnold: My apologies for ghosting you.  I did get the token but it didn't work.  But I cotinued to fiddle with it and got another token and got that to work20:49
MarchHaresarnold: This isn't a BSOD. It's more like something is just changing the terminal colors just before the login prompt. It doesn't happen when I ssh in or anything, it's only on the actual console.20:51
alystairI'm running Ubuntu in WSL2, what's the 'proper' way to start a service when the VM is turned on/restarted?20:55
sarnoldMarchHare: once you've logged in, 'reset' may fix it20:55
alystairit needs to run as root20:55
sarnoldFortunateSon: all sorted out though?20:55
MarchHaresarnold: No dice. I tried that first thing.20:56
MarchHaresarnold: This affects all console instances, not just the first one.20:56
alystairit seems I can use cron, init.d, rc.d?20:57
sarnoldMarchHare: oh *wow*. that's strange.20:58
alystairsomething about upstart as well, this is a long running service (openlitespeed)20:58

ubottuWindows 10 has a feature called Windows Subsystem for Linux, which allows it to run Ubuntu (and other Linux distro) userspace programs without porting/recompliation. For discussion and support, see #ubuntu-on-windows or ##windows. For installation instructions, see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/commandline/wsl/install_guide20:59
sarnoldalystair: there's a chance folks in that #ubuntu-on-windows channel will just know what to do :)20:59
alystairwhat I'm trying to do is purely based in linux20:59
alystairjust happens to be in WSL20:59
FortunateSonsarnold: I think so, but I got pulled off onto another emergency : )  Boot partition got full on someone's web server and freaked out in the middle of an apt update21:01
FortunateSonim cleaning up the mess now21:01
sarnoldFortunateSon: *gah*21:01
sarnoldFortunateSon: that happened to me yesterday, a pal the day before..21:01
sarnoldFortunateSon: the quick way to fix it, is, in a root shell, *truncate* the files with "> vmlinuz-..." etc -- truncate the oldest kernel, system.map, etc, and then you can use apt install -f to fix the rest21:02
FortunateSonthe guy who set up these servers left the boot part at the default of like 250MB and NEVER removed any kernels21:02
leftyfbsarnold: TIL truncating the old boot files in order to remove them ... genius. I used to for loop through all but the running kernel and temporarily move the files out, put 1 kernel files back, purge, rinse, repeat21:05
oerheksalystair, you should read about your service and the systemd service file, not much we know about it. that is why there is a dedicated channel.  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/ -- https://www.sitepoint.com/wsl2/21:06

jordywaveform, guess what, after having to install ubuntu a few times due to breaking grub by simply typing the grub update command it suddenly did not pop up the error? What was happening.
