tom_wSo... it's like this.  I'm a LONG time linux user and I can't install Kubuntu 20.04 on Dell Precision 5510.  Multiboot USB install failed.  Unetbootin install failed.  I'm pulling my hair out.03:10
tom_wI borked an 18.04 installation on this machine this morning (apt purge libxml2... DO NOT DO THIS)03:11
tom_wI'm intending to wipe and re-install Kubuntu 20.04 but it will not install (successfully).  If I set the option to include updates, it fails near the end.  If I don't include updates, I don't get the networking required to allow me to install updates.03:12
tom_wI downloaded the most recent version of UNetBootin and installed it on a freshly formatted ext4 formatted thumbdrive but the Precision 5510 can't see it (Missing operating system, Selected boot device failed)03:15
tom_wOh... wait.  Maybe I should format as Fat32 and use UNetBootin... that could be better.03:15
tom_wThat could be much better.03:15
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Live boot works fine but install fails to create a bootable system?03:16
tom_wYes.03:16
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Is  the netbootin USB is failing to boot?03:16
tom_wYes, it is now.  (This is the most recent thing I tried to do but I formatted it to Ext4 which I'm willing to bet is the issue).03:17
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> I have had very good look using ventoy.03:17
=== lex is now known as Guest93557
tom_wis Ventoy a linux app?  I don't have access to Windows (but, then again, I don't want access to Windows)03:18
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> ventoy is cross platform, so yes...03:18
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> https://www.ventoy.net/en/download.html03:18
tom_wOh, yes.... something new to play with.03:19
tom_wLet me give this a shot.03:19
tom_wThanks for the tip Darin03:19
tom_wSo I download Ventoy and I was able to format the thumbdrive "ventoy -i /dev/sdd".  It seems it was successful.  My Kubuntu 18.04 recognizes that it has a Ventoy thumbdrive but it won't mount it to allow me to copy the Kubuntu 20.04 iso to it.03:30
tom_wLet me try GPT03:32
IrcsomeBot<ri5h46h> @tom_w, it formats the Partition where you will put ISOs in exFAT , you can chanfe it if you want to03:39
tom_wReading a post, I saw someone had formatted to ext3.  Just tried that, without success (but using GPT).  Going to retry with MBR (formatting first partition to ext3)03:49
IrcsomeBot<ri5h46h> @tom_w, why not ext4 ?03:53
tom_wBecause the Ventoy message forum has someone experiencing exactly what I am and they used ext3 with success.04:06
tom_wInteresting, I used a new USB stick on yet another system (dell m6700) running Kubuntu 20.04 and ventoy successfully formatted it allowing me to mount the exfat partition.  Copying some ISOs in now.04:08
tom_wAnd here we go... let's do this thang.04:08
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> very good. :)04:09
tom_wThey sync was long... that's what SHE said.04:11
tom_wHad to boot into legacy mode and ... voila, a ventoy menu04:13
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Ventoy is awesome in that the USB stick is still usable for regular copying and ISO's can be added and removed as desired.04:17
tom_wIf this install of Kubuntu 20.04 doesn't work, I'm going to go with Kubuntu 18.04 (iso copied as well; this system was running this before) then do the upgrade.04:18
DaskreechI ended up doing that once04:19
tom_wThis is cool because MultibootUSB  was barfing on adding 20.04 to a thumb drive which had 5 other distros.  Ventoy seems to be handling it swimmingly04:19
tom_wCoolio... first restart after install... fingers crossed.04:25
tom_weww... an ugly grub menu04:27
tom_wwell drats... an unknown partition at had1 "No known filesystem detected"  And it's big.04:30
tom_ws/had1/hd1/04:30
tom_wBooting to a virgin Kubuntu 20.04 system with encrypted LVM working.  Ventoy seems to have done the job04:37
tom_wBut I have no network and I'm not sure how to install the networking components.  Any suggestions?04:40
Daskreech!networking04:47
Daskreechumm04:47
Daskreech!network ?04:47
ubottuDaskreech: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)04:47
Daskreech:-)04:48
DaskreechWhat04:48
Daskreech is your chipset for your networkd card?04:48
tom_wI'll check that in a moment.  I'm missing a bunch of sound stuff as well. I'm going to try yet another re-install and enable WiFi and suck down the updates during install.04:58
tom_wI'm surprised it didn't auto detect the physical ethernet connection during install.04:59

kubuntu__Guys can you ttel me the MAIN difference b/w Kubuntu and KDE Neon.09:38
kubuntu__i tested both and found no differnce ; so what do you guys reccomend ? currently using win 7 4 gb ram09:39
Raamhi09:47
Maikkubuntu__: look at the about and faq on the websites, should tell enough about the differences09:51
Maikkubuntu__: also: https://itsfoss.com/kde-neon-vs-kubuntu/09:52
MaikRaam: hi09:52
pial@kubuntu__, kubuntu=kde+ubuntu, kdeneon=rollingkde+ ubuntu. thats as far as i know the simplest representation09:52
Maik!ask | Raam09:53
ubottuRaam: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience09:53

ubottuWant to talk about Ubuntu, but don't have a support question? /join #ubuntu-discuss for non-support Ubuntu discussion, or try #ubuntu-offtopic for general chat. Thanks!09:53
Maikpial: plus Kubuntu is a official Ubuntu flavor where Kde Neon is not09:54
Maikkubuntu__: we're in the official Kubuntu channel so we'd recommend Kubuntu of course09:56
MaikNeon has it's own userbase and support medium09:57
Maikkubuntu__: you tried them both you said so it's up to YOU, it's all a matter of personal taste. Want a stable environment with 3 years of support go Kubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. Want a kinda rolling desktop environment and the latest and greatest of KDE Plasma, with a slight chance of breakge, on a ubuntu LTS base go with Neon.10:01
Maikagain, it's all up to you and what you prefer.10:01
kubuntu__Thanks guys i have chosen KDE neon coz  i rhink its more "lightwieght"10:12
Maikkubuntu__: good luck and know that support for Neon is elsewhere. not here :)10:14
kubuntu__Assuming Kde neon = kubuntu i wan to ask waht is the filesystem check before booting and how to disable it as it takes around 1-2 minute boot time10:14
Maikkde neon is NOT kubuntu10:14
kubuntu__i kno i know but booting proccess were similar i mean KDE PLASMA10:15
Maiksupport for neon can be found on their website and chat  https://webchat.kde.org/#/room/#kde-neon-users:kde.org10:15
Maikso if you have questions about Neon, ask there10:16
kubuntu__thanks btw the same thing happens in kubuntu and since i am running kubuntu as we10:16

IrcsomeBot<Adam Workman> Hello what kernel can I use for heavy gaming as I see arch users with zen do kubuntu have the best kernel for the workload???15:49

tom_wWell, it is impossible to do a fresh install of Kubuntu 20.04 on a Dell Precision 5510 and getting working hardware.19:15
tom_wI was able to make it work by first install Kubuntu 18.04 then doing a release upgrade to Kubuntu 20.0419:15
tom_wA fresh install of Kununtu 20.04 works from a live CD (MultibootUSB and Ventoy), but the resulting install doesn't work with the network (through the dell docking station or through wifi) and the audio hardware is left unconfigured.19:16
tom_wThere doesn't seem to be any instructions on how to enable networking on a fresh install of Kubuntu 20.04 if you don't have any networking available.19:20
tom_w(It seems you need a working network to get to any repos to ... enable the network.  Weird)19:21
