Anonamysuch as Clementine,02:19
Anonamyeven virtualbox has no menu02:20
kc2bez[m]qt4 is deprecated and no longer available. Any application in the archive should be using qt502:25

Arsenievhello, Iam isntalling xubuntu 20.04 but I can't find the option to install only open source software.10:49
ArsenievIn previous versions, there was an option also to select the language and keyboard.10:49
ArsenievAm I doing something wrong?10:50
guivercArseniev, No i don't think you're doing anything wrong, I'm looking for it, and don't see it either..11:03
Maikoption to install only open source software -> that option has never been in any installer of *buntu11:04
guivercMaik, it was in Ubuntu ubiquity; there is a test case for it, which I've run11:05
guiverchttp://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/408/builds/226239/testcases/1307/results   (maybe that has clues)11:06
guivercI can't see where I used to press F6 though11:06
guivercnor how to get it as an option (parameter to start it)11:06
Maikguiverc: oh, never knew about that11:09
guivercno probs Maik , a lot of people don't I believe11:09
guivercsorry Arseniev, I can't see how to start it, so you're not doing anything wrong... (I can't recall when I last used it, maybe 18.04)11:09
guivercI do recall a conversation about it (maybe community hub) as to how many people still used it, maybe with view of dropping it (which maybe happened, but I forget, maybe 18 months ago, if not more)11:12
guiverchttps://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/anyone-still-use-the-free-software-only-install-option/843111:13
guivercArseniev, ^11:14
Arsenievthanks guiverc11:32
guivercyou're most welcome11:33
ArsenievI found the problem. I made the installation usb with unetbootin and somehow it replaces the screen where you can choose that option by pressing F611:34
ArsenievI made a new usb with rufus and everything is fine. Strange issue :S11:34
guivercI didn't use unetbootin, booted a thumb-drive with focal & didn't see it either..  but very glad you got it solved :)11:34
Maikunetbootin isn't recommended :)11:41
Maikhttps://ubuntu.com/tutorials/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows#1-overview11:42
Maik:)11:42
ArsenievHi. Do you reonmend me to encrypt my home directory?15:17
ArsenievThere is no option in 20.04 installation15:18
MaikArseniev: for a newcomer i wouldn't recommend it16:20
ArsenievMaik, I was a newcomer 20 years ago. I always encrypt.16:46
ArsenievI ask  your opinion because there is no option to encrypt in xubunu 20.04. Maybe there is a reason.16:46
Maikhttps://www.itzgeek.com/post/how-to-install-ubuntu-20-04-lts/16:49
Maikyou can encrypt when you choose LVM16:49
Maikthe installer is the same so it should be there16:50
Maiki never used encryption myself so can't help any further16:50
Maikmaybe there are more tutorials out there, just search16:51
xtaoyep. i did that in both 20.04 and 20.10. you just select LVM and then encrypt16:55
xtaothat does full disk encryption. if you only want home then will have to do it manually16:56

DrKK`Anonamy: whoops. :)18:57
Anonamyyeah I don't know where to begin to troubleshoot this18:58
AnonamyI've tried uninstalling, reinstalling18:58
Anonamyuninstalling the applications :)18:58
Anonamynot Xubuntu18:58
Anonamyso the applications affected are,   Clementine, Virtualbox, smplayer,19:00
diogenes_Anonamy, apt list --installed | grep nity19:00
Anonamyhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/snqwDxjkpm/19:01
Anonamydiogenes_, ^19:01
diogenes_libunity <---- might be the problem.19:02
Anonamyremove it ?19:02
diogenes_try19:02
diogenes_remove all unity stuff.19:03
Anonamyok I did this  sudo apt remove libunity*19:04
diogenes_there is also unity*19:04
Anonamythank you19:04
Anonamyreboot ?19:05
diogenes_yes19:05
Anonamydiogenes_, wel that didn't seem to work19:08
Anonamystill no menus19:08
diogenes_apt list --installed | grep nity19:08
Anonamyhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hgyRs95NZj/19:09
Anonamynot much there anymore19:09
diogenes_apt list --installed | grep menu19:09
Anonamyhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/VFtkyr3G2R/19:10
AnonamyI bet there is a bunch of stuff in there I don't need19:11
Anonamybut I don't know what is new or old since I just upgraded from 16.04 via the upgrade scripts19:11
Anonamy(16 -> 18, then to 20)19:11
diogenes_ahh so you upgraded.19:13
Anonamyyes19:13
Anonamymost stuff seems fine,19:14
diogenes_and it was Ubuntu with unity.19:14
Anonamyno I went from Xubuntu 16.04 to xubuntu 20.0419:14
diogenes_remove gnome-menus libgnome-menu-3-0 (but before hitting enter see if it won't remove some important stuff)19:16
Anonamydiogenes_, wow, none of that worked19:27
Anonamystill no menus for QT applications19:27
Anonamymaybe I should reinstall QT5 ?19:31
diogenes_Anonamy, try a new user19:31
Anonamynot seeing any GUI apps to create a new user19:35
Anonamysudo adduser username should do the trick I hope19:36
Anonamydiogenes_, ok I created a new user, and menus  work !19:38
Anonamyso what does that leave us with ?19:39
Anonamyconfiguration files in my home folder ?19:39
diogenes_yep19:39
diogenes_.folders and .files19:39
Anonamyok well it seems to be QT specific19:40
diogenes_look in .config qtconf or in /home/.gtkrc file19:43
Anonamythere is a Qt folder in .config19:43
diogenes_remove any if you find.19:43
diogenes_rename it.19:43
Anonamyok so removing the Qt folder didn't fix it, but by looking in the new users folder, I can see what folders I should play around with in my current users home folder19:47
Anonamyso I am going to work at this from here, thanks for your help diogenes_19:48
diogenes_you're welcome.19:48
svcthello, can I just uninstall pulseaudio or will it break things?19:51
AnonamyI think you can uninstall it19:52
Anonamyshould be able to19:52
svctokay thanks19:52
svctcan somebody please help me get audio working, it started with speakers going into power saving mode/shutting down after going to sleep for longer periods of time and I had to reboot every time after that so I tried unmuting all the devices in alsamixer and then my audio stopped working completely so I uninstall pulseaudio so I don't have to wonder if that's what's causing the issue and it still isn't20:02
svctworking20:03
svctI've tried to kill alsa and restart it but when I do "ps aux | grep alsa" it's not running20:03
Anonamydiogenes_, I completely removed the .config file , logged out and back in.. didn't fix it lol20:11
Anonamy(renamed .config to .config2)20:12
Anonamymust be a different .folder20:12
svctnvm I reinstalled pulseaudio and it's working for some reason20:13
diogenes_Anonamy, look in .local/share20:13
Anonamyoh there is a pile of stuff there20:13
Anonamyok I tried removing the whole .local folder (renaming)20:20
Anonamyman nothing seems to be working20:21
Anonamyalright enough of this20:22
AnonamyI might just wipe my user account, and move everything back over one at a time20:23
Anonamyyeah wow I tried removing the .local folder, the .config folder, and the .conf folder20:25
Anonamynothing seems to fix that qt problem... very very weird20:30
Anonamyremoved the .config folder, the .local, all the QT folders..20:30
diogenes_and .cache?20:31
Anonamyno didn't do that yet20:31
Anonamy.cache didn't work either20:33
Anonamyman20:33
Anonamystubborn20:33
Anonamyok here is my new plan. going to start fresh user20:33
Anonamyok so I would like to wipe my home folder, and start fresh, how can I back up my home folder ?20:46
AnonamyI was going to just log in as root, do a cp -r /home/muser /home/temp20:46
Anonamythen remove my user and re-add the user20:47
Anonamyactually I was going to do this20:47
Anonamysudo su20:47
Anonamymv /home/myuser /home/temp20:47
xubuntu94ihello21:01
AnonamyI think I need a good tutorial on how to refresh my home folder,21:03
AnonamyI tried logging in as root, and using userdel, but it is PID0 so I cannot21:03
Anonamymy user is the root user also I guess (and the only user)21:03
AnonamyI can't beleive how stubborn this bug is, after removing so many configuration files, nothing changes21:04
AnonamyI don't even know if wiping my user folder will fix it21:04
Anonamydiogenes_, well we tried :)21:15
Anonamyat least I know a new user home folder fixes my problems.. I don't know how to wipe my current home folder..21:16
diogenes_Anonamy, just cut/copy your data then from old to new.21:18
diogenes_cut/paste21:18
Anonamyyeah I created a new user, can I migrate to that new user, and remove my old user, then rename my new user back to the old user ?21:19
diogenes_yes but gooogle it.21:20
lsempleman this is bizarre21:50
lsemplemaybe I should reinstall qt5 ?21:50
Anonamyfixed22:52
Anonamyremoved the program   indicator-appmenu22:53
xu-help1whello. i have a dual boot environ with xubuntu bionic and windows 7. i recently updated xubuntu after not having been logged in for some time. now, windows 7 fails to load. it gets hung on the black screen splash where the bright multicolor 'window' logo pulses. after some time the computer reboots. when i attempt to start windows again i'm offered23:18
xu-help1wan option to start windows regularly or a repair mode option. start normally just goes through the same circle as mentioned, repair option does nothing but present a black screen. my first thought is maybe the boot record. (linux starts without issue). what else should i consider? thanks in advance23:18
