[02:57] good morning [03:36] https://9to5linux.com/meet-the-ubuntu-21-04-hirsute-hippo-artwork-by-sylvia-ritter-made-with-krita [03:37] lucky it fits on my screen :p [03:51] Hello [03:51] karmelsx: a liveusb should be slower then the physical install on ssd [03:51] i have 12gb of ram that is quickly consumed by ubuntu and i have a low-end processor. [03:51] usb speed vs sata [03:51] so i think the kde neon is a big improvement for me. [03:51] what cpu do you have? [03:51] because it runs significantly better on the usb drive than does my ubuntu on the ssd. [03:52] Intel Pentium 3805U 1.9 GHz [03:52] that doesnt make sense karmelsx [03:52] what doesn't make sense? [03:52] runs better from a live [03:52] the kde neon runs better on the usb drive than ubuntu runs on the installed ssd [03:52] ubuntu is using the latest gnome. i have the latest ubuntu installed, not the stable, but the latest 20 version. [03:53] so i think kde neon is significantly better for my hardware than normal ubuntu. [03:53] kde isnt known as being lightweight [03:54] and gnome these days likes more then 4GB ram [03:54] i have 12gb of ram. [03:54] "There is absolutely no reason to install it, since it uses the same package repositories as Ubuntu and you can transform any Ubuntu install into a Ubuntu MATE install." [03:54] how do i make my ubuntu into ubuntu mate, and is that a good idea vs installing ubuntu mate? [03:55] says about kde neon: "It's a really sparse, bare-bones system, no automatic driver install for example. It can be quite hard for someone not used to Linux." [03:55] yet when i plugged in my printer when testing kde neon on the usb, it detected it right away, and my printer is very old. [03:57] karmelsx: you can test any desktop flavour ontop an ubuntu base/flavour but if you like one, we usually reccomend to clean install it [03:57] so you think lubuntu is significantly better for lower end hardware than kde neon? [03:57] yes [03:58] i used to use ubuntu mate, and then along the way i moved to regular ubuntu. the ubuntu is nicer than ubuntu mate, but it's taxing my hardware too much. [03:58] which do you like better and why, lubuntu or ubuntu mate? [03:58] tweak your system yourself karmelsx [03:58] tweak it how? [03:58] i ran gnome on ubuntu for years with 2GB ram on an amd 3200+ [03:58] the gnome 3 seems the culprit with cpu and memory leaks. after i have the system running for a while, even when i close all the applications, it benefits from a fresh restart. [03:59] karmelsx: sudo apt install haveged preload stacer bleachbit [03:59] you don't think gnome leaks more memory and cpu than kde? [03:59] gnome is based largely on javascript from what i know. kde maybe is coded better? [03:59] karmelsx: tweak startup applications, disabled unwanted systemd services, uninstall unwanted packages, use light weight apps [04:01] i installed the bleachbit now [04:01] shred your system from junk files with stacer and bleachbit [04:01] seems quite a sophisticated tool for experts [04:02] what's a safe way to remove startup services? [04:02] why would unwanted packages i'm not using affect my daily performance? [04:02] karmelsx: depends on your use case [04:03] i disable cups from laptops that doesnt need printing for example [04:03] i need printing though [04:03] braille support... [04:03] this bleachbit seems mainly a cleaner [04:03] not sure how it's going to help my performance [04:03] every bit helps karmelsx [04:04] so what do you like, lubuntu or ubuntu mate and why? [04:05] not sure gnome 2 is better for me than gnome 3. [04:05] gnome 2 is really old. at least with kde neon i get the latest kde plasma code. [04:06] i like lubuntu best for older machines, but thats my opinion [04:06] a lot of users love mate and xubuntu aswell [04:06] what's better about xubuntu vs lubuntu? [04:06] gnome classic can also still be installed from the repos [04:07] personal likings karmelsx cant compare apples with pears [04:07] every flavours has pros and contras [04:08] are you a ubuntu dev? [04:16] no karmelsx im a volunteer helping a bit here and there [04:48] morning! [07:06] good morning [07:08] Good morning [11:44] puff: did you pick a flavour yet? [11:52] guys?! Is it tomorrow? 20.04.2? [11:53] I can't remember the day [11:53] marcoagpinto: lsb_release -a [11:53] what? [11:54] type it in your terminal [11:54] I don't have the VM runnin [11:54] I don't have the VM running [11:54] oh are you spying us from windows again ehh [11:54] I use Windows [11:55] my VMs are only to compile my app and visit dangerous sites [11:55] let me show you mine, Description: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS [11:55] ahhhh [11:55] it is out then [11:55] good to know... thanks [11:57] Buaaaaaaaa... I don't want to go on holiday any more this year [11:57] because one needs to do the COVID test at work when we return [11:57] luckily it gave negative, but it is too much stress [14:42] marcoagpinto: 20.04.2 isos will be released on the 4th of february, tomorrow [14:42] ahhhh [14:42] cool [14:42] those running a LTS release are already on 20.04.2 because of the updates [14:42] I ran the VMs and they had .2 in the about window [14:42] :) [14:43] the daily builds of yesterday are being tested at the moment [14:43] Ubuntu MATE looks ready to go
