davidsongIs it just me, or does the release upgrade tool suck bigtime for servers?01:15
davidsongI mean, the default should be to keep my config and continue working until it reboots and not ask stupid questions every 2 minutes01:15
davidsongLeave it running, come back to a question. Wait... do something else, get asked another stupid question01:16
oerhekserr, no, release upgrade tool, i would stop the services.01:16

davidsongyeah, can't really stop SSH01:17
davidsongI stand to the back of the elevator that doesn't have doors because I like to keep my arms and legs attached01:17
leftyfbdavidsong: the release upgrade tool is not an unattended upgraded tool. It's not meant to be unattended and it's not meant to default it's way through the entire process01:17
davidsongbut regardless, it's a stupid, unsafe elevator design01:18
davidsongso it's meant to be a bag of spanners?01:18
leftyfbdavidsong: it's a tool to bring you through the upgrade process01:18
davidsongI get that, it's just not a very good one01:18
leftyfbdavidsong: either way, feel free to file bug reports if you find issues. Or download the source and develop your own tool that fits your personal needs01:19
davidsongokay, thinking more productively... Is there a flag for dpkg that accepts the default action when doing installs?01:20
leftyfbdavidsong: you can use debconf to pre-answer the questions01:20
davidsongbecause "do-release-upgrade --get-on-with-it --and-reboot-when-done" would be an ideal default01:21
davidsongthat's part of the .deb files?01:21

oerhekshave fun!01:25
davidsongSorry for the grumblings. I've been up and down out of the freezing cold attic, risking waking kids and neighbours up over and over again because ssh was down01:26
davidsonguntil ssh was reconfigured, I had to stand up there answering questions about whether I'd like my server's various configs to be destroyed or not01:27
davidsongwaiting an eon between questions01:27
davidsongThe reason being because I was upgrading over ssh and had been waiting for it for hours, forgot about it, it got stuck on one of the questions (would you like me `shred` your finely tuned nginx config? [y/N]), then closed my laptop01:29
davidsongIf it had just done as it was told it'd probably have finished before I'd closed my laptop01:30

Looking at networkmanager logs in syslog, it seems the link is up fine so I'm unsure why it's failing. https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/QBP2RJsmHX/ has the networkmanager logs from syslog but that doesn't seem to be of much help(at least to me). PolitikerNEUHi everyone, is it possible to somehow download something to upgrade a system from 16.04 to 18.04 (and then to 20.04) so that the upgraded system doesn't have to have a (good) internet connection? Preferably I'd like to just copy some files somewhere and then execute a command. The download should happen from a windows machine preferably12:33
tomreynPolitikerNEU: not for supporte dupgrade path, i think. that's because apt will need to resolve dependencies, and apt only runs on ubuntu, not windows.12:35
tomreynin the past you could download the target release iso, mount it, set it up as an apt source and use that to upgrade, but i'm not sure that's still possible with the image based installers.12:37
tomreynthere's also apt-offline, but i'm not sure it can (or should) be used for release upgrades12:39
PolitikerNEUit would also help if it'd reduce the required download by 90% or so.12:39
tomreyncan you discuss the use case more? maybe there are other, better, options?12:40
PolitikerNEUok, the use case is the following: I currently have an existing 16.04 installation of ubuntu, where the drivers for my usb wifi don't work, so I have to use a worse USB wifi which has extremely bad connection. As I hope that in newer distributions it might be supported, I want to upgrade.12:42
tomreyncan you use an ethernet connection?12:43
tomreyndo you have a usb-to-ethernet dongle you could attach?12:43
tomreyndo you have a smartphone and a usb connector to it, so you could tether through the smartphone?12:43
PolitikerNEUwell, not realistically for (a) and no for (b)12:44
PolitikerNEUSmartphone with USB tethering, however, could be an option12:44
jeremy31PolitikerNEU: do you have the USB IDs for these wifi dongles?12:44
PolitikerNEUThe working, but bad one has 7392:7811 (Edimax EW-7811Un)12:46
PolitikerNEUThe other one I can only guess from being the "added" device in lsusb: 2357:0106 - but it doesn't even have a description12:46
PolitikerNEU(it's a TP-Link Archer T9UH)12:47
jeremy31PolitikerNEU: https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8814au should work for the TP Link, not sure if it will build on 16.0412:48
PolitikerNEUwell, I will try it12:49
jeremy31PolitikerNEU: https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes might fix the 781112:50
tomreynjust for the upgrade, your smartphone is probably the easiest option, though12:51
PolitikerNEUwell, yeah, then I will try to go forward with that option12:52
PolitikerNEUhow would I use the usb tethering on ubuntu?12:56

jeremy31PolitikerNEU: Just plug the phone into the computer using the USB cable, then go into the phones network options and find where to enable USB tethering13:05

tomreyn"grub-common/now" suggests the package (version) you have installed is not one you could install from any apt repository you have configured at this time. this can point to unsupported third party packages.13:31
tomreynbut you'll need to provide more info to get better answers.13:31
tomreynafter running    sudo apt update    , running    apt policy <PACKAGENAME>    on any installed *grub* package, as well as     apt policy    output itself, would be a way to get started.13:34

blhi, i recently upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04 and i'm having some issues which i am having a difficult time characterizing...18:32
blsometimes i essentially lose the ability to interact with UI with the mouse.  the mouse will still move across the screen but the pointer will not change it's look and i clicking on anything has no effect18:34
blso i have to navigate entirely via the keyboard18:34
bli'm really not sure how but sometimes i am able to regain control18:35
bli opened hexchat in a terminal window and i'm seeing some (what i assume to be) error messages...18:37
EriC^^bl: can you pastebin the errors?18:38
blfor example:18:38
bl(hexchat:9431): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 13:14:09.128: IA__gdk_window_get_events: assertion 'GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed18:38
blis it alright to share them here?18:38
=== medium_cool is now known as medium_cool[away
tomreynbl: use the pastebin, see /topic18:42
blit's super odd...i have them copy and pasted into gedit (which, i also opened gedit from a terminal, and there are errors in that terminal as well) i was able to copy and paste that first one but when i back to try to copy the second i've lost control via the mouse again18:42
tomreynalso post     journalctl -bk18:42
tomreynand tell us about how you upgraded, and whether the upgrade went well18:43
blthese errors, btw, show up when i click the mouse inside one of these windows...so like right now when i click inside the gedit window the sequence of errors show up in the hexchat terminal18:44
bli upgraded from the ubuntu prompt to upgrade, like after checking for updates it prompts you to upgrade18:44
bli think the upgrade went well...video drivers weren't there so and i eventually figured that out...had to install the kernel source and headers then install from the ppa18:45
blsound also wasn't working but that was pretty quickly resolved by installing a package i can't remember the name of18:46
EriC^^bl: if you use alt+tab to go to hexchat, the mouse works properly?18:46
blEriC alt+tab will change to the window but it will not really allow me to regain control via the mouse18:50
bl(hexchat:9431): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 13:14:09.129: g_object_ref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed18:50
blso for example i was able to alt+tab to get focus back to that gedit window and then navigate via the keyboard to copy that error i just shared18:51
tomreynhow did you install video drivers, and which video hardware do you have there?18:51
=== medium_cool is now known as medium_cool[away
bli can actually change focus between windows via the mouse by hovering the mouse over a window (i can't remember but i think that wasn't working a moment ago), but i still cannot interact with the windows18:54

coconutHash, just unpleasing, a lot do give up on (and status you can give without changing username)19:07
HashSo, figure out your own issues.19:07
HashDon't police people because YOU find something unpleasing for YOUR eyes.19:08
HashMost people either set /away or /nick to nickname_ (tail) or [away] or some other indication.19:08
HashThe fact that a person even thinks he can try to control another in this manner is disgusing and abhorrent.19:08

HashThey show up in the terminal window where hexchat was launched from cli. This gives program output on stdout19:34
HashThe same errors are there when you launch Hexchat from application menu19:35
ash123Hi all! I am not able to change screen brightness on my laptop (amd ryzen 5). It used to work when I used windows. Can anyone please help to point out the reason?19:35
HashIt's just... they don't get dispalyed anywhere. The go into oblivion.19:35
blno, they don't show up in the hexchat window, just the terminal from which hexchat is launched/running.  and they show up when i click anywhere on the whole desktop, even if i click on a browser window for example.19:35
HashYou can pipe the output of hexchat to a log file as well instead of stdout19:35
blgenerally speaking i can't launch things from the Dock19:36
HashI wouldn't worry about it.19:36
HashHmm19:36
HashI can't help with that. I use keyboard shortcuts and xmonad extentions for launching things.19:36
bli think it just shows that no matter what i'm doing hexchat is still intercepting? mouse events19:36
bland it's not just hexchat that does this. sometimes when i am able to get another application launched, i think synaptic for example, i'll see this same thing19:40
tomreynbl: my guess would be that you're either an incompatibility in the nvidia driver, or a problem caused by mixing packages from different sources (i.e. ubuntu's and third parties')19:41

bltomreyn, thanks i'll look into that19:53
tomreynbl: you should also try to verify that NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module version 390.141 actually supports your old nvidia hardware19:56

leftyfbbrutex: follow the link20:07
HashThe open source driver even does pci passthrough. nvidia binary does not, or I couldn't get it to work20:07

HashYou might look into it and abandon nvidia binary altogether.20:08
Hash(in the spirit of freedom)20:08
Hashbrutex: sudo cp file.iso /dev/sdX20:10
Hashbrutex: dd works as well of course, but you can always copy/cp a file to a block device node20:11
Hashcp doesn't give progress, for which you'd have to run it through `pv', or just wait until it's done.20:12
tomreynbl: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3142/~/support-timeframes-for-unix-legacy-gpu-releases states that nvidia still supports the 390 series driver until end of 2022. and the page it links to below, http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html , states that the 390.xx driver supports geforce gtx 550 ti. so, according to this, it should indeed still work. i would suggest you also have a look at the X server initialization log20:14
tomreyn(which is available in the full system log,    journalctl -b   ), which may hint on driver related problems, though.20:14
bltomreyn i can't get the screen shot i want, the menus are also odd looking.  so for example the menus in the terminal window are all mashed together like "FileEditViewSearchTerminalHelp"20:17
tomreynbl: that's probably a problem that's not related to the nvidia driver. can you install the    apt-forktracer   package and post the output of the    apt-forktracer    and    sudo apt-get update     and    apt-cache policy   commands?20:20
bltomreyn that's good to know...it maybe that the 550 ti is supported but (and this might be a bit cynical) that doesn't mean it's bug free, or that enough people are running it that even if nvidia knew of a bug that they'd priortize fixing it20:20
bltomreyn i should be able to do all that20:21
bltomreyn going back to something you said earlier perhaps i have third party packages? (i think that's what you said) installed which are causing conflicts?20:22
tomreynthat's what we're trying to find out using the above commands20:22
blalso, as an aside, does anyone has any thoughts on reliable video cards?  or thoughts on how to evaluate them?20:23
blhttps://termbin.com/jrym <- the output from apt-forktracer20:26
blmaybe by "reliability" i mean stability and support20:27
tomreynlooks like you have some package sinstalled which are meant to be used on "Xenial" (Ubuntu 16.04) still. And none of your currently configured APT repositories provide these packages.20:29
tomreyn(look for "xenial" in your apt-forktracer output)20:29
tomreynalso any of the packages it reports with no [square brackets] on the line lack an apt source, so can't get (security and other) updates through apt.20:30
bltomreyn so it seems like best next step would be to uninstall those xenial packages20:38
tomreynbl: Yes, either that, or find APT repositories providing those packages (those you want/need to keep) compatible with your current Ubuntu release ("bionic").20:40
bltomreyn i'd be happiest to just remove those for now and worry about replacing them when my system is working better (or just be happy it's stable and leave well enough alone). just don't want to remove those if you think it'll leave me with nothing working :)20:42
bl"bl no warranty express or implied, but go ahead and remove them"20:43
tomreynthings should rather work better than worse after removing those packages and installing any pending updates20:43
bltomreyn that makes sense to me.  think i should go ahead and reboot after removing them?  also, apt update will get pending updates, correct?20:46
DarwinElfhow do you mount a ZFS on *ubuntu?  I see several packages when I searched aptitude, but not the main openzfs/zfs-on-linux one... is it already included or is it renamed?20:54
PeanutDarwinElf: I think you need to install zfsutils-linux on Ubuntu - that's what I'm running on 20.04.21:04

tomreynbl: right, libpng* is a library which can be used by other software to work with PNG files. now, there are different versions of this library, and your current Ubuntu release doesn't support this old '12' (probably 1.2) version of this library.21:45

tomreynso xenial has libpng12-0, bionic has libpng16-1621:47
blso, should the upgrade have dealt with that?21:47
tomreynyes, i don't know why this package is still installed. but libpng16-16 is likely already installed.21:48
tomreynchances are that one of the other outdated packages you have since removed depended on libpng12-0, so it was kept during the upgrade.21:49

tomreynbl: if you plan to install the nvidia-driver-390 driver then indeed,     sudo ubuntu-drivers install nvidia-driver-390     would be the next command to run.22:15
bltomreyn i'm inclined to stay with the version nvidia recommended from their site22:15
tomreynso give that a try, and reboot after it installed - assuming it does so without error22:16
tomreynnote that you also have the option of going with 340 series there, just in case oyu want to try something even older.22:16
bltomreyn so just, i'm sure this is obvious but i just want to say it directly, rn since the ppa was removed will there not be a video driver unless i run that command?22:17
bl(yea i may try the 340 series at some point22:17
bltomreyn so when i sudo updatedb and locate -i nvidia | grep ko i see /lib/modules/4.15.0-135-generic/updates/dkms/nvidia.ko among others22:18
tomreynbl: the ppa may provide a newer, less tested, version of the same series of drivers as ubuntu provides out of the box.22:39
tomreyni suggest using the well tested driver version unless you have reasons to need to resort to the PPA22:39
tomreyn<tomreyn> bl: the ppa may provide a newer, less tested, version of the same series of drivers as ubuntu provides out of the box.22:40
tomreyn<tomreyn> i suggest using the well tested driver version unless you have reasons to need to resort to the PPA22:40
tomreynppa-purge removes packages which were installed from a PPA. If packages of the same name are available in Ubuntu itself (the remaining apt sources after the PPA is removed), these packages are not removed but just downgraded to the version that is available in Ubuntu.22:42
tomreynAs such, I would expect a package downgrade to an earlier version of nvidia-driver-390 to happen22:42
bltomreyn again, thank you for your help so far.  couple things i've found 1) sudo ubuntu-drivers install nvidia-driver-390 gives "ubuntu-drivers: error: unrecognized arguments: nvidia-driver-390" and 2) i found https://askubuntu.com/questions/1118621/cannot-install-nvidia-390-driver-ubuntu-18-04 which recommends (seeing about) purging nvidia-* and libnvidia-*, what do you think about that?22:50

ubottunvidia-driver-390 (source: nvidia-graphics-drivers-390): NVIDIA driver metapackage. In component restricted, is optional. Version 390.141-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 (bionic), package size 373 kB, installed size 1081 kB22:51
bland what about sudo apt install nvidia-driver-39022:52
tomreynbl: ^ this package does exist.22:52

brutexhow to copy file to read-only system to flash22:53
tomreynbl: the output you got from "sudo ubuntu-drivers install nvidia-driver-390", which was "ubuntu-drivers: error: unrecognized arguments: nvidia-driver-390", may suggest that you cannot specify the driver to install this way. maybe you need to run "sudo ubuntu-drivers install" and it will then ask whihc one to install?22:55
tomreyni haven't used this utiliuty in a good while, trying to stay away from nvidia graphics cards22:55
bltomreyn do you use radeon then?22:56
trupsalmsi have a server with nginx reverse proxy to apache, the same machine is also a dns server, client using it as a dns can reach the resource behind nginx, outside connections can, i'm not sure if it a networking issue or nginx issue, or even apache. my only concern is beibg able to reach it from all directions22:57
bl(i'm just looking at /usr/bin/ubuntu-drivers)22:57
tomreynbl: amdgpu and i915 driven hardware, but my preferences and hardware configuration would be more suitable in #ubuntu-offtopic22:57

oerheksbrutex, what are you trying to do? writing a file to the installation iso on usb?23:12
oerheksbtw one does not format an USB with dd, use mkfs.vfat /dev/sdXY23:13
bltomreyn well i installed version 39023:22
bl460 doesn't work23:22
bli used apt install to do so23:23
bland apt remove to remove 46023:23
blthings are better but not truely fixed23:23
bllike i don't know how or why but right now i have not mouse cursor on the screen at all23:24
bli did for a while but i don't know what happened23:25
tomreynbl: hmm, well, you can still give the HWE X and kernel a try:23:29
tomreyn!hwe | bl23:29
ubottubl: The Ubuntu LTS enablement stacks provide newer kernel and X support for existing LTS releases, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack23:29
tomreynbl: a reboot will be needed to boot the new kernel. if this doesn't help either, you'll need to pass along your X server log.23:30

openfacehow to format usb stick from terminal23:44
ruediiopenface, what format do you want it?  You format it the same as a hard drive.23:50
openfacehow23:50
ruediiLook up the device name, (if you automounted the drive it should be listed in mtab)23:51
ruediiunmount the drive.23:51
oerheksuse mkfs.vfat /dev/sdXY23:51
oerheksor ext4, ntfs or something else23:52
ruediiif you need to change the drive format type, use fdisk to change the partition type, otherwise use the appropriate mkfs tool on /dev/sdXY as mentioned.23:52
ruediiI recommend f2fs or ext4.23:52
oerheksdepends, if you want to put an iso on it, fat32 it is23:53
ruediiWhile Linux does fine detecting ext4 disks in disks partitioned as "dos/windows" windows will choke on it and try to reformat it on you.23:53
oerheksyeah, he never read it23:54
ruediiBTW, unlike Windows, Linux supports FAT32 partitions over 2GB.  I mean WTF Microsoft.  FAT32 supports up to 16TB without breaking spec.23:54
ruediiFAT32 supports larger volumes than LBA mode on hard drives.23:55
