metbsdBetal, you only need one EFI on one pc00:08
Betalmetbsd: yes, but I want to move the efi to diskB, so I want to ensure it boots from diskB before deleting efi from diskA00:09
Betalmetbsd: iam sure 2 efi (1 in each disk) should work even if we only need 1 in total00:11
metbsdthen you just delete the one you dont want00:11
metbsdyou can check grub wiki on archlinux00:11
Betalthen I can't boot without a live usb00:11
metbsdyou have EFI partition00:12
Betalone efi don't interfer the other, why would it?00:12
metbsdand it has grub installed as you said00:12
Betalyes, both efis have grub installed00:12
metbsdthen it's safe to delete one of them, just use one of them00:13
metbsdif it doesn't boot, reinstall grub with proper mount00:13
Betalmetbsd: after the diskB efi works, because it don't works or iam missing something in grub-install00:13
metbsdbut when it boots, how do you know it's EFI from A or B?00:13
metbsdas far as i know, it doesn't tell00:14
Betalthe motherboard menu say from where you are booting00:14
metbsdi have never tried two EFI partition before00:14
metbsdhow old is your motherboard00:14
Betalyou can select in motherboard from where you are booting, thats why you tell an ID for the bootloader00:14
Betalthe --bootloader-id=GRUB00:15
metbsdok, but my motherboard boot menu just tell me the efi name00:15
metbsdok i haven't tried two EFI partitions before, but as far as i know, the bios will goes into EFI partitions and read all available boots00:16
Betalefibootmgr show all entries and bootorder, samething that motherboard show00:16
metbsdyes efibootmgr do scan efi partition00:17
metbsdbut motherboard, i'm not sure, lets say if you insert another usb or something, boot menu of motherboard will detect it00:18
Betalyes, it will list everyone who have an esp partition00:19
metbsdwhat other os do you need to boot?00:20
metbsdany windows?00:20
Betalonly ubuntu matter right now, just use grub to have more options, fallback and things like that00:20
BetalI find weird that manually typing inside the grub shell from diskB I can boot, but it using the same config as diskA can't00:21
Betalgiven ubuntu is inside lvm, it is (lvm...), so it should be the same config for both grubsd00:21
Betals/grubsd/grub's00:22
Betalor Iam missing something obvious there00:22
johnfgI've been working on cpanel and slack remotely, so haven't been watching here.00:25

redbeard83tomreyn: me again, espace doesn't work in the grub screen00:40
redbeard83so, I installed ubuntu and I'm stuck at a grub screen. nothing happens after that, no command, works. I have tried a lot of different solutions00:55
tomreynredbeard83: try holding down shift then00:55
tomreynduring boot00:55
tomreyndo you know wether it's supposedly uefi or bios booting?00:56
redbeard83it's uefi00:56
tomreynhmm then it should be escape. maybe you didnt hit the right time00:57
redbeard83I was hitting it like crazy, lol00:57
tomreynredbeard83: when you say "espace doesn't work in the grub screen", then what do you see on screen?00:58
redbeard83just "grub" and a blinking "_"00:58
tomreynthen maybe you hit escpae too often00:58
tomreynyou need to press it once, or once a second, until it takes effect, only.00:58
redbeard83I'm using a live usb, it is possible to change grub from here?00:59
tomreyna live usb? you said you installed ubuntu?01:00
redbeard83yes, I installed it, but I never pass this grub screen01:00
tomreyntype "normal" next time you hit it01:00
redbeard83so I had to use the live usb to come here, lol01:00
tomreynoh i see. i suggest you use a second computer or mobile phone to cconnect there then01:01
golden_ticketI have a SDR but when I try to run URH I cannot connect to it. I instead get an error. Is this the best place to try and resolve the issue?01:01
golden_ticketThe error is, "Failed to start rx mode"01:01
tomreyngolden_ticket: is URH a software provided by ubuntu, and are you running wsome ubuntu release (which)?01:02
golden_tickettomreyn, yes it is. It's universal radio hacker (the name) and the ubuntu version is 18.0401:03

tomreynwhat was the grub problem you saw there?01:08
redbeard83I don't remember01:09
redbeard83could the graphic card have anything to do with it? I was using opensuse with gtx750 ti, I changed to the gtx 1650 and everything was working. But, after the installation nothings worked anymore, lol01:10
tomreynredbeard83: it could be a power supply problem01:10

tomreynfoxfire? :)01:11
redbeard83so, should I replace the 1650 for 750ti?01:11
golden_tickettomreyn, any idea?01:12
tomreynredbeard83: if things were working fine with the gtx750 ti for a while, and you still have that available, then i'd use that to see whether it makes it boot properly01:12
tomreynredbeard83: but this rather sounds like a hardware / firmware issue so far. or a broken installation. if you get stuck on the grub prompt, then the linux kernel and any drivers have not been loaded.01:13
tomreynso either something is broken with grub, or with the efi system partition grub is stored on, or some hardware or the 'bios configuration' is malfunctioning.01:14
redbeard83I did like 6 instalations today, lol01:14
tomreyngolden_ticket: no, i'm out of ideas there, do not know the software. RX refers to receiving data, but i assume you know so much.01:15

johnfgapport-collect 1917191 did not work, as it needs a browser too.01:17
johnfgtomreyn: anything else to do?01:17
redbeard83tomreyn:(01:20
tomreynjohnfg: try running it as     BROWSER=chromium-browser apport-collect 1917191     or whichever web browser you prefer01:21
tomreynredbeard83: try installing to different storage media01:23
tomreynredbeard83: maybe oyu have a spare ssd, hard disk, or removable storage?01:23
tomreynredbeard83: it could also be another usb stick01:23
redbeard83I will look for another one01:24
tomreynredbeard83: and in case you changed bios settings recently (before things stoped working), try resetting it to ("optimized") manufacturer defaults01:25
tomreynredbeard83: you can also run a memory test (memtest86.com provides one which is uefi bootable and free for personal use), and, on some systems, firmware supported hardware diagnostics01:27
tomreyndisabling the "secure boot" bios configuration can sometimes help01:28
tomreynjohnfg: any luck with this?01:29
tomreynjohnfg: are there recent files in this directory?     ls -lah ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash\ Reports/pending/01:33
redbeard83tomreyn: I reste the bios already. I tried one last time to boot and 3 rectangles appeared: one green with an "!", one red and another one pinnk01:34
tomreynjohnfg: if so, run    export MOZ_CRASHREPORTER_DISABLE=1; /usr/lib/firefox     this may enable the ubuntu crash reporter to capture the crash01:35
tomreynredbeard83: this is probably hardware specific. do you know which mainboard you have there? it may say on the very first hardware initialization screen when you reboot01:37
redbeard83it's a gigabyte01:38
tomreynthat's... a brand ;)01:38
tomreyntheir models are usually called GA-something i think01:39
redbeard83it's h110m-h01:39
tomreynredbeard83: maybe a cmos reset would help there. but that's all in the hardware domain, try asking the folks in ##hardware for further suggestions (they will know better), or gigabyte support.01:41
johnfgtomreyn: yes, there are files in that directory.01:45

Crorangnome-system-monitor reports different numbers for 'free' vs 'available' space on my disks.19:58
Croranwhat's the difference between free and available?19:58
samdragonI got a new Acer laptop and i've tried both ubuntu 20.04 (which I had to switch from because a wifi driver bug) and now 18.04, and every time I do a system update with apt update, the BIOS SATA mode gets reset and make my laptop fail to boot. I need to get into boot, remember some obscure key stroke to get the advanced SATA mode setting to show up, and switch it to AHCI for it to boot again. It's really annoying but I havent had20:49
samdragonany luck googling for solutions20:49
samdragonI need to get into the BIOS*20:49
Croransamdragon: The BIOS settings change when you update the OS?20:50
Croransamdragon: The only way I've seen that happen is in a system that is failing to boot and then loading BIOS defaults.20:50
samdragonyea, maybe not every time I run `sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade` but often, it seems correlated to when there's a new minor kernel update20:51
Croransamdragon: usually accompanied by a message. with asus it was 'overclocking failed press f1 to load defaults or f2 to enter setup'20:51
Croransamdragon: whether overclocking was involved or not.20:51
Croransamdragon: what model acer?20:52
samdragonhavent seen that error message. it seems like the BIOS defaults (whatever are getting reset to) are causing the failure to boot20:52
samdragonthe message is something like "cant find drive <insert the UUID to the drive that's listed in the BIOS and fstab>"20:52
samdragonthe drive is NVME or whatever, which I believe is different than SATA20:53
Croransamdragon: what model?20:54
samdragonSwift 520:54
Croransamdragon: swift 5 launched 2016... I'm assuming yours is a newer generation?20:56
Croransamdragon: 7000-series Intel CPU?20:56
samdragonyea, the model number from uname -a is Swift-SF514-54T20:56
samdragonhow do I check the CPU device info20:56
Croranmodel number is enough. you can `cat /proc/cpuinfo` if you want though20:57
Croranlooks like 10000 series intel20:57
samdragoni7-1065G720:58
Croranyeah it can suck being the tester for linux compatibility with cutting edge hardware - especially laptops.20:58
Croranwith more proprietary firmware/parts20:58
Crorandid you upgrade to HWE kernel?20:59
CroranHWE edge?21:00
Croranmight help, if you haven't already.21:00
samdragoni dont think so, let me check21:00
Croranworth a shot. leave your old kernel installed too so you can easily switch back if it doesn't work right.21:00
samdragonit says it was already the newest version, "now set to manually installed"21:03
Croransamdragon: so you've got linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04-edge?21:04
samdragonI ran this, from the LTS enablement stack page: `sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04`21:05
samdragonnot sure how to check for the -edge package21:05
Croransamdragon: edge MIGHT be same version as hwe, but check by running `sudo apt install linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04-edge`21:06
guaj0hello how can i update the libgcrypt 1.9 library ?21:06
Croranguaj0: what version of Ubuntu are you running?21:06
guaj018.04 and 20.0421:07
samdragon@Croran looks like that was not installed yet21:07
guaj0principal 1821:07
Croransamdragon: so it gave you a new version, or just installed the metapackage?21:07
samdragonhmm, i dont know the differene21:08
Croranguaj0: 18.04 or 18.10?21:08
jeremy31The edge kernel should be the same as the hwe21:08
Croransamdragon: something in the apt messages would have mentioned a kernel package being installed beyond just the linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04-edge metapackage21:08
guaj0@Croran 18.0421:08
samdragonSetting up linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04-edge (5.4.0.66.74~18.04.61)21:09
Croranguaj0: so you're trying to install libgcrypt20 version 1.9?21:09
Croransamdragon: sounds like you got a new kernel21:09
samdragonyea I dont think it was a new kernel21:10
jeremy31The 5.4 kernels are the newest that 18.04 can get through normal means21:10
Croransamdragon: oh? what does uname -a say?21:11
Croranguaj0: looks like the ubuntu repos only have libgcrypt20 packages up to 1.8.7 even if you went with the 21.04 pre-release packages (which might not even work with 18.04).21:11
Croranguaj0: so you'd need to compile it from source or find another source of packages21:12
Croranguaj0: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=libgcrypt20&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all21:12
guaj0@Croran I have read that the version I have 1.8.1 is insecure, I have done an update but there is no change. I have to get the latest version 1.9.1 or 1.9.2.21:12
Croranguaj0: if there's a known issue, it's possible the ubuntu maintainers already patched it. regardless of version.21:12
samdragon5.4.0-66-generic #74~18.04.2-Ubuntu21:12
Croransamdragon: ok. sounds like the same version you mentioned shown in the 'edge' install so yeah not new.21:13
samdragonso I think I need to reboot, and it'll say .61 rather .221:13
Croransamdragon: 18.04.2 is just the OS version21:13
jeremy31guaj0: why is it not secure?21:14
samdragonoh ok21:14
Croransamdragon: have you checked for BIOS updates?21:15
samdragonno, i havent done anything to the bios21:16
guaj0@jeremy31 https://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-announce/2021q1/000456.html this is for 1.9.0 i have in ubuntu 18.04 -> Libgcrypt 1.8.121:16
Croransamdragon: may be worth checking the manufacturer site for a BIOS update.21:16
jeremy31guaj0: The 1.8.1 is not affected, just 1.9.021:17
samdragonok I can do that for sure. question: is updating the bios something that is more permanent than switching distros?21:17
Croranguaj0: looks like the insecurity is in 1.9.0 only, so you wouldn't want 1.9.021:17
guaj0@jeremy31 oh Yes21:17
Croransamdragon: yeah it can be permanent. some MFRs won't allow a bios version downgrade21:18
guaj0ok, I understood that the others also, I am more relaxed.21:18
samdragonlike if I update the bios, while Im on 18.04, and then switch to fedora or something, the bios updates would be separate from the distro so those updates would persist even while distro hopping?21:18
Croransamdragon: totally separate from OS21:18
guaj0thanks @Croran & @jeremy3121:18
samdragonok thanks! let me look into that21:19
Croransamdragon: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/8104?b=121:21
Croransamdragon: when you go into your 'BIOS' Setup utility you should be able to check the version and see if you have the latest 1.1821:21
Croranguaj0: you're welcome21:24
guaj0thanks as always21:25

Croranpersona24: try `ip link show`21:36
persona24Should I just install it without Internet and see what happens?21:36
Croranpersona24: i probably would. could be that initial updates gets you a kernel version that just works.21:36
jeremy31persona24: Tether to a smart phone using USB?21:36
persona24If I only had a Wifi USB adapter21:37
persona24What's weird is I installed Ubuntu 20.04 on this same machine last year on a different drive and didn't have this problem. Nothing has changed in this machine21:37
jeremy31persona24: trying to use wifi or ethernet?21:37
persona24I have no wifi option21:38
persona24Ethernet only21:38
Croranpersona24: if you're wanting to save time maybe buy a usb to ethernet adapter. probably cheap.21:38

jeremy31persona24: model of the ethernet, does is say unclaimed or disabled?21:41

samdragonfollowup, the BIOS is v1.13 but Acer only provides BIOS updates via EXE files for this laptop line, womp womp21:43
persona24Ha I tried that already21:43
Croransamdragon: lame. you could try renaming exe to zip and unzipping. sometimes you can extract that way. if you can get the binary file you may be able to install it another way.21:44
jeremy31persona24: I mainly use wifi, a bit strange for an Intel device not to work21:44

persona24That worked21:47
Croranpersona24: good. now `ip address`21:47
Croranpersona24: any ip addresses listed?21:47
persona24No21:47
Croranpersona24: you might try running dhclient manually21:47
samdragonit looks like theres ways to upgrade the BIOS with a live usb of windows, but that just seems like so much work21:48
Croranpersona24: if no luck there, you could assign a static IP, if you know what ones your LAN uses.21:48
persona24Nope lol Not that tech savvy21:49
persona24Only enough to get myself in dumb situations lol21:49

samdragonyea, 3.28 seems to be the latest I can get for 18.0422:11
Croranjeremy31: it does work for me though, with the newer version22:13
Croransamdragon: may all be moot anyway. i don't know which, if any, utility can be used to actually flash that bios file.22:14
jeremy31They might have to try the BIOS update using freedos22:14
Croransamdragon: if you want you could try getting the focal version of file-roller. might not work on 18.04, but it might.22:14
Croransamdragon: http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/f/file-roller/file-roller_3.36.1-1ubuntu0.1_amd64.deb22:14
samdragonim going to look into the freedos option, but Im worried I might brick this machine messing with the bios22:16
Croransamdragon: you're running bios 1.13 now?22:17
samdragon1.13 or 1.14 I cant remember exactly22:18
Croransamdragon: lot of bios releases. i would think that they correct some important issues with 4-5 bios releases.22:18
samdragonyea, id definitely like to upgrade, i wish it was easier to upgrade BIOS independent of the OS, but acer only supports windows for these laptops22:20
Croranyeah good to keep in mind for your next purchase22:20
samdragonim tempted to just sell this laptop and buy a system76 lol22:21
samdragoni really like this model, it's super thin and has all the goodies I want and I got a good price but ive had a ton of hardware issues22:21
Croransamdragon: all laptops suck, to various degrees. proprietary hardware and user-unfriendly firmware22:21
