BadBoyHaloCatFor a general desktop system, would you go with LTS (20.04 Focal Fossa currently) or latest (20.10 Groovy Gorilla currently)?03:22
BadBoyHaloCat(not a server, just a laptop i use from time to time)03:23
lotuspsychjeBadBoyHaloCat: depending your needs, LTS vs non-lts its the users choice03:25
matsamanjust depends on how lazy you "plan" on being about updates03:25
BadBoyHaloCati usually update as soon as I see one03:25
matsamanyou can always wipe out the OS part of a system and update it that way, if you forget to update too long, doesn't take very long at all03:26
lotuspsychjeBadBoyHaloCat: usualy newer hardware benefits later ubuntu releases, due higher kernels03:26
lotuspsychjebut there's also !HWE to fix things03:26
BadBoyHaloCatis the fact that the rtl8821ce driver broken a kernel-level problem or Ubuntu-related?03:26
lotuspsychjeBadBoyHaloCat: realtek chipsets are kernel sensitive03:27
BadBoyHaloCatalright now i understand why all the distros i tried didn't have a working driver03:27
BadBoyHaloCati tried Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, and custom-built arch03:27
BadBoyHaloCatmatsaman: is that why people keep /home separate?03:28
matsamanBadBoyHaloCat: some people do mistakenly consider that justification, yes03:37
matsamanBadBoyHaloCat: you don't need separate /home to do that, however03:37
matsamanmostly separate partitions are useful for differing FSes03:38

SimplarHello! I'm having a PC that dual boots Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.10; However, Ubuntu is on an HDD, and Windows is on an SSD. I'd like to speed Ubuntu up using 55Gb unallocated space on SSD. What's the best way to do that? Thanks!08:42
guivercSimplar, I can't provide any advice on 'best' way; I'd likely setup the partition I wanted on the SSD, copy the data wanted from your Ubuntu partition(s) to the formatted SSD partition(s), then an unclean install (existing partition(s), no format, upgrade via re-install like) into the SSD  ... but that's one option only.  I have no experience on moving boot with dual-boot system & windows 10 sorry08:48

andyyyyythanks, leftyfb . what i like about my solution is that i don't have to worry about which files are important and which not or if i maybe forgot something important, as i back up everything16:38
leftyfbandyyyyy: it's not a good solution for many reasons. The main one being at the moment it's not working for you due to the resilvering taking long or slowing your machine down while in process. A backup script would not require you to remember to plug the drive in and render your computer unsuable every so often.16:39
andyyyyytrue16:40

I must now ask here how to change it. if i reinstall my system and backup my photos and documents, I'll again be at the point where it scrolls the wrong way and I'll have forgotten how to change it and will have to come here again to ask16:49
andyyyyyok, I'll look into ansible. So i shpuld use that instead of dejadup? I tihnk dejadup is what's installedchere - but not yet using it16:50
leftyfbandyyyyy: ansible will be used to reinstall all your applications, maybe rewrite your configs as opposed to just copying them from a backup. Then you can tell ansible to restore your files16:53

Zuroger-KUB20Hello, looks like kernel updated or something and I have to run some grub refresh right to get rid of the boot screen asking me which kernel to boot19:38
Zuroger-KUB20Forgot what it was tho.19:38
Zuroger-KUB20AFAIK don't I need to actually manually select the new kernel to be the default one?19:39
=== Napsterbater is now known as Guest1613
=== Napsterbater_ is now known as Napsterbater
svm_invictvsZuroger-KUB20 I think it keeps them around for a while but will always use the latest kernel. I've never had to touch it on ubuntu, tbh.19:40
Zuroger-KUB20But it's probably a minor update right, because I use an LTS release, no?19:41
oerheksyeah, it should boot automaticly, or not al all..19:41
oerheksrun sudo apt install -f# to see if there are packages held back?19:42
Zuroger-KUB20The grub boot screen with a 30 sec countdown appeared.19:42
oerheksand sudo update-grub, perhaps19:42
VMGuy23that's normal for me, just select ubuntu19:42
BadBoyHaloCatwhy does update-grub take so long?19:42
BadBoyHaloCati've got only 2 OSs19:43
BadBoyHaloCatubuntu and arch19:43
Zuroger-KUB20I cloned from HDD to SSD, Clonezilla reinstalled grub on the target SSD, I'm not sure whether it was that or was it the update that caused this boot screen.19:43
oerheksZuroger-KUB20, any more surprises?19:44
Zuroger-KUB20Yes I know just hit enter, but I don't want to wait 30 secs when I turn on the PC and do some other stuff, now the screen may be helpful but I'd only want it in case when I actually want it, like a hotkey for advanced boot.19:44
oerhekstry the 2 steps i posted?19:46
Zuroger-KUB20Sure, but now I recalled I did some modifications to grub and forgot, I think I kept a log on system customizations somewhere but I kinda forgot now.19:51
oerheksWe should not blame clonezilla, nor grub nor an update, but your lack of information19:52
oerheksgood luck19:52
=== Napsterbater_ is now known as Napsterbater
Zuroger-KUB20I did not put the boot screen there, but I did booted both the original and cloned disk which did produce weird behavior, perhaps that made grub start showing a boot screen19:53
Zuroger-KUB20Basically what was happening was, I would boot into my cloned disk, then it would show up the boot screen, then due to UUIDs most likely it started loading up the system from the HDD (because it goes slower so I know) but then that boot makes weird errors like Failure to Load Kernel Modules.19:55
Zuroger-KUB20etc/default/grub is all fine, same as I had it on the HDD, no timeout20:01
andyyyyyif i don't like the direction the scrolling goes in gnome, where do i change it?20:06
andyyyyyi.e. scrolling down should move down on the page, not up20:06
eliocampNatural scrolling? Should be on mouse / touchpad settings.20:07
andyyyyycurrently, it moves the page down, which means I'm going up in the page20:07
andyyyyythx, eliocamp. it used to work correclty, and i didnt change anything, but after a reboot it was all inverted20:08

mrproperI am trying to create an image using Packer based on the Ubuntu 20.04 live image but not sure what the username and password are for Packer's ssh_username and ssh_password fields.20:48
Zuroger-KUB20Well, actually I forgot to see how it looked like before I ran update-grub, so this was after update grub, then I diffed with the old one on the HDD (which clonezilla didn't touch, just read, and the one that wasn't updated to newer kernel)20:49
supremekaiHey guys, I'm trying to follow this tutorial to add SSL to my Ubuntu 20.04: https://www.vultr.com/docs/wildcard-lets-encrypt-ssl-for-one-click-lamp => but in step (3) Install SSL Certificate for Apache I do not have /etc/apache2/ssl/ folder, what am I doing wrong?20:49
oerheksmrproper, packer is not in our repos?20:50
oerheksoh it is, as snap20:50
sarnoldsupremekai: perhaps the guide was written with a different distribution in mind, that happens from time to time20:51
mrproperoerheks: I'm not using packer on that system locally but want to build Ubuntu using it.20:51

jeremy31Zuroger-KUB20: That would trigger the grub menu at boot20:54
andyyyyyif i can search youtube videos on my phone and have them open on the tv, then somehow the tv has a way to "listen". Can I also use that way for somehow sharing my ubuntu laptop's screen on that tv, like for watching videos or conferences?20:55
Zuroger-KUB20Thing is, it's not 10 secs, but 30 secs, the first grub-update could have gotten rid of the 30 second one that was created by simply boot process detecting 2 linuxes or something, so I'll just run the grub-update again.20:56
jeremy31Zuroger-KUB20: 30 seconds might be recordfail triggered20:56
Zuroger-KUB20Yeah, it wouldn't be surprising, but funnily it only happened on the cloned disk, the one that I updated once I finished cloning, it wouldn't boot right if I had both of them connected sharing the same partition UUIDs20:58
Zuroger-KUB20So it was weird in other ways too, booting into the cloned one in the BIOS screen would switch it over to the original one somehow, with various errors in the boot process, I thought I would have to fix those and redo the cloning wasting the whole afternoon.20:59
Zuroger-KUB20There's probably some kind of a writeup or warning in the community help/resources outthere it's not a good idea booting identical UUIDs right? So this was expected to happen. If not, perhaps it looks like a bug to be fixed if it's not suppose to happen.21:00
Zuroger-KUB20Kernel Modules would fail to load, was one of the boot issues, even tho once booted it looked and worked normal (well I didn't stay logged on for long)21:00

Skaface82yeah thanks i dont know why i didnt think of that before now :P21:28
sarnoldandyyyyy: hmm, that's probably part of it -- apparmor logging can vastly slow down a system, and complain mode profiles can consume a fair amount of kernel memory21:28

pedrocrI've built a locally patched version of upower and installed it, but it gets replaced by the repository version on every "apt upgrade"23:38
pedrocrhow can I bump the version somehow?23:38
sarnoldpedrocr: modify the debian/changelog version when you build your new version to use a larger number; you could even use an epoch by prepending a 1: but be aware that this is pretty powerful...23:39
pedrocrpowerful would be nice, I've been burned so many times by this crappy upower behavior that I'm patching it manually myself23:40
tomreynapt-mark hold upower   would also work, i'd say23:42
pedrocrtomreyn: that may be simpler23:42
pedrocrediting the changelog then makes the build fail23:42
pedrocrit's a fully tricked out package with signing and everything23:42
tomreynyou'll end up running outdated, possible insecure, software if you don't keep following the source of your package and keep patching it.23:44
pedrocrtomreyn: that doesn't work though, apt upgrade still wants to replace it23:44
pedrocrarg23:44
tomreyndoes    apt-mark   showhold    list the package, though?23:46
pedrocrtomreyn: ah, dpkg -i had cleared the hold23:48
pedrocrtomreyn: and yes, I could end up unpatched, but the package is unchanged since 2019 and upstream hasn't shown particularly good decision making23:48
pedrocrI hoped ubuntu would just add the patch to its package but so far no luck23:49
tomreynmaybe it needs more praying to the flying spaghetti monster, or filing a bug report.23:49
pedrocrthere's an upstream bug report where the maintainers say "I don't agree with you so won't allow the software to have that option"23:50
pedrocrand an ubuntu bug report where I've attached two possible patches that has no answer23:50
tomreynmaybe try debian, too23:51
pedrocryeah, maybe it's time to go back23:51
pedrocrthanks for that tip, the hold is probably the best bet for now23:52
tomreyni suggested filing against debian because the package may be 'synced' from debian (i have not checked), i.e. debian may be the upstream to ubuntu there.23:52
pedrocrcould be the case too23:53
