bobdobbsHi all. When I boot, nginx starts. But I don't want it to start. I want the  apache2 service to start instead02:04
sarnoldbobdobbs: I don'tknow if you can have both installed at once or if you need to purge nginx in order to install apache, but that's the first place to start -- getting apache installed if it isn't already02:06
wingsHi there02:12
wingswhen I run ulimit -Hn as root I see 104857602:12
wingsI am trying to increase that drastically... I have increased it in /etc/systemd/system.conf and set it high in sysctl.conf02:12
bobdobbssarnold: I usually use apache2 for webdev stuff. I must have install nginx to experiment with it at some point.02:13
bobdobbssarnold: recently I updated from 18.04 to 20.04. I'm guessing that some change in the startup scripts happened, preventing apache2 from starting as I'm used to, and starting nginx instead02:14
bobdobbsl guess I could remove nginx. But I'm also kinda interested in figuring out how to control the start of services on boot02:14
sarnoldbobdobbs: systemctl enable and systemctl disable02:15
sarnoldwings: look up /proc/sys/fs/nr_open in procfs(5)02:18
wingssarnold: yep, found that! :)02:20
wingsthat has helped tremendously, but I'm still having issues with my core issue... but I don't think it's #ubuntu related now ;)02:20
sarnoldwings: ah good good ;)02:21
wingsif you want to help diagnose a weird issue, PM me..02:21
wingsbut it's a tricky one haha02:21
sarnoldpop into #ubuntu-offtopic perhaps?02:21
wingshuh. does sysctl vm.max_map_count affect how many files you can open?02:27
coXZistSooo I re-checked and all my configs are intact, all interfaces are up. But isc-dhcp just isnt doing dhcp on all interfaces like before. The dhcpd.conf is the same no change. The service file is set to read the config file but for some reason it seems like its not03:42
coXZistOoops wrong channel03:42
coXZistBut since I'm here.. I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 and isc-dhcp stopped working03:43
coXZist I do class b subnetting and I have one physical nic and 3 Vlans. I checked all my configs which have not changed. Now the server is only doing dhcp on the IP address of the physical card and not the vlans03:44

pizzaburgerHello! Trying to burn an mp3 CD, but the DVD drive doesn't seem to recognize the blank CD. If I put in a CD with data it spins up and is recognized just fine. Ubuntu 20.10. Any solutions to this? Thanks!11:30
summonnerpizzaburger, what application are you using?11:42
pizzaburgersummonner: just checking on the default file browser11:43
summonnerdoes it give you an error or it just shows nothing?11:45
pizzaburgersummonner: shows nothing. Insterting a CD with data works with no issues11:45
summonnerpizzaburger, so if you have a pizzabox with a pizza inside, and you shake it, you can feel the pizza move11:46
summonnerbut if you take the pizza out, and you shake it, you feel nothing, right?11:46
summonnerthe file manager is showing you nothing because there is nothing on the blank CD11:46
pizzaburgersummonner: correct, you also can feel the bottom being warm if the delivery guy was not taking his time11:47
summonneryou have to put something on it, for it to show, just like putting a pizza into a box, then you can then feel it when you shake it11:47
summonneris anyone else hungry?11:47
pizzaburgersummonner: Super hungry. So, how do I put a pizza in the box, when the box is not recognized?11:48
summonnerso you'll need an app that does the writing to the blank cd11:49
summonnerin your system tools, you should have the SOFTWARE app, run that to find applications that can help you11:51

I've complied a list with the offending files, with spaces escaped, to use with --files-from and even with a "while read -r BLA; do" loop, but rsync fails in both cases with invalid argument (22) -- using the while loop the script doesn't even read the whole path; I've used both "rsync -as" and "rsync -rts" in case the file ownership clashed, at no12:36

cbreaksnaps can be upgraded?20:28
cbreakI thought they'd be frozen, for ever, without the ability to change anything, stuck with all the security holes that were baked into the package at code signing time20:28
cbreakand the only way to fix anything was to replace the whole package with a new version20:28
sarnoldaka "upgrade"20:29
sarnoldjust like debs20:29
cbreakdebs don't contain everything20:30
cbreakshould the unthinkable happen, and someone discover an actual security hole in OpenSSL (just an example, we all know that lib is a paragon of security and well maintained code), updating that library alone will fix it for everything that uses it20:31
cbreakI don't even know a way how to find out which version of OpenSSL I have (inside the snaps)20:43
sarnoldcbreak: for most snaps, grep libssl /snap/*/*/snap/manifest.yaml  will work20:46
sarnoldcbreak: if someone hand-builds a snap without the tooling, you'll have to check inside the mountpoints another way20:46
cbreakseems I have OpenSSL 1.1.1  11 Sep 201820:46
cbreakaccording to running "strings" on the .so20:47
cbreakthose manifests are very interesting, thanks!20:48
cbreakseems I have outdated openssl in every snap that uses it :(20:48
cbreakhmm... no, maybe not...20:49
leftyfbcbreak: that can actually be one downside to snap. They get automatically updated with no intervention and you can't disable it without breaking some things. Only schedule it.20:49
sarnoldyeah, it's really annoying to find my matterhorn instance has had its security policy replaced with a null profile and it can't open links or images or update which channels I've read, etc20:53

Sven_vBHi! My mDNS problems on Ubuntu focal have become even more exotic. "time avahi-resolve-host-name foo.local" gives the correct result within 0.014s. whereas "time gethostip -d foo.local" takes 10.016s. /etc/nsswitch.conf says "hosts:          files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns myhostname", but it also happens if I add " mdns4" at the end. why is gethostip so much slower than avahi-resolve-host-name?23:17
Sven_vBalso, is there a way to use the quick avahi-resolve-host-name for gethostip, ping, ssh etc.?23:18
Sven_vBI mean other than a cron job that adds avahi IPs to my hosts file23:19
sarnoldSven_vB: try a strace or ltrace of gethostip to find out what apis it uses / which services it contacts to try to do name lookups23:20
Sven_vBsarnold, http://paste.debian.net/plainh/4c5e578023:30
Sven_vB{sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(53), sin_addr=inet_addr("127.0.0.53")}23:31
sarnoldSven_vB: okay, so systemd-resolved... try a resolvectl query for your things23:33
sarnoldfunny though, I get garbage answers, probably from my garbage ISP, for hosts on my local network..23:34
Sven_vBI have another focal host that recovered from this issue after update and reboot, so I compared their output. they have picked another NS as "current nameserver", and the slow machine has an entry "DNS Domain: ~." that does not exist in the quick machine's resolvectl output.23:37
Sven_vBall theit interfaces have "MulticastDNS setting: no" and "DefaultRoute setting: no", except on the slow machine there is one interface with "DefaultRoute setting: yes"23:39
Sven_vBwhich is strange because that machine should not have a default route23:40
Sven_vBor rather, both should have only a bogus default route. and "route -n4" looks like that one is present and is the only one.23:41
Sven_vBafter restarting NetworkManager, the "DefaultRoute setting: yes" switched to "no", but the .local lookup still is slow. so that wasn't it.23:46
