superdreamkillawhat is the number of packages in a base ubuntu install?01:39
sarnoldheh, I haven't seen anyone ask before..01:41
leftyfbsuperdreamkilla: I don't think anyone here has that answer. Feel free to install Ubuntu and run: apt list --installed |wc -l01:41
sarnoldthere's a .manifest file in https://releases.ubuntu.com/20.10/ for the live installer iso..01:42
sarnoldit includes a bunch of language packs that you'll probably never install, so it'll probably be fewer packages than the manifest lists01:42
sarnoldbut you'll get new kernel packages during the security updates, perhaps other new packages during updates, I'm not sure. it'll be close, anyway.01:43
superdreamkillaThanks!01:44
superdreamkillaI think it was about 1200 when I checked long ago01:44
superdreamkillaManifest has 1827 lines01:44
leftyfbsuperdreamkilla: why do you need to know?01:45
superdreamkillaI'm trying to compare distros to see if anything is way higher or lower, because I'm curious01:47
Liowenexsuperdreamkilla: the Debian "DVD-1" will be the most you'll find01:58
LiowenexThe second largest will be slackware01:58
LiowenexAlso just use Arch if size is a concern, if you want the fattest install possible, then install Debian with everything in tasksel ticked01:59

sybaritenlive system, trying to run beep, but get  beep: Error: Running under sudo, which is not supported for security reasons.   beep: Error: Set up permissions for the pcspkr evdev device file instead.18:17
sybaritenthis is the standard ubuntu user. I had another user made in a similar system, (xubuntu though, this is lubuntu) and i am almost sure i managed to solve this issue by doing  sudo chmod 777 /dev/input/by-path/platform-pcspkr-event-spkr   which was recommended here  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1289288/beep-not-working-since-upgrade-to-20-04-1-lts18:19
sybaritenBut that device doesnt seem to exist for my current system18:19
sybaritenThe thing i don't understand is, I'm not (as far as i know) running it under sudo18:22
VMGuy23whats the bash prompt18:23
sybaritenlubuntu@lubuntu:~$18:23
VMGuy23Thats not a root user... how strange18:26
today911anyone for my custom drive mount? :)  (1TB... 300GB + 200GB?)18:33
julius_hi18:36
julius_this page here: https://github.com/aaptel/qtwirediff   says to run: qmake-qt5 && make    to compile, but packages.ubuntu.com's file search does not return anything for that command?18:37
VMGuy23Check just qmake-qt5, the && seperates 2 commands18:39
julius_my mistake, just a copy error18:39
julius_did not enter the && or the rest18:39
julius_ive intalled qt5-qmake but that apparently only contains: x86_64-linux-gnu-qmake as executable18:40
sarnoldjulius_: also install build-essential if you haven't done that yet18:42
sarnoldjulius_: once you've installed that, re-run the commands, and if you're still getting errors, pastebin the whole thing18:42
julius_will do that, need to eat now18:42

makara1hi. Im on 20.04.2 and my machine is now always crashing on resume from suspend19:02
makara1i put in the password and press enter and boom. Nothing19:02
makara1how do I see the previous dmesg?19:03
makara1ok, its journalctl -k -b -r -119:07
makara1last entry says "19:07
makara1audit: type=1107 audit(1617908190.568:480): pid=2206 uid=106 auid=4294967295 ses=4294967295 msg='apparmor="DENIED" operation="dbus_signal"  bus="system" path="/org/freedesktop/Networ>19:08
makara1or maybe its this line: kauditd_printk_skb: 16 callbacks suppressed19:08
sarnoldmakara1: that last line is printed when you've had so many apparmor denials that the kernel starts to throw some of them away19:13
tpw_rulesis there any way to stop tab complete from being smart? or at least temporarily override it? it frequently prevents me from tab completing files because it believes they are the wrong type and it is intensely aggravating19:21
VMGuy23tpw_rules: A shell like fish might fix the issue. has tab complete, but not smart. My preffered shell.19:22
sarnoldtpw_rules: isn't that annoying/ sometimes I just want the old stupid tab completion back.19:24

nyxynAny way to check monitor info of my laptop in commandline?20:14
unixbsdyou can find the ubuntuÃ-live memstick for backup of Windows 10 <-- and dual boot with Ubuntu + Windows, it features partclone: https://openbsdtai123.shell.ircnow.org/ubuntu-live-memstick.html20:16
tomreynnyxyn: "xrandr" for its X configuration. if you are looking for make and model (and possibly more): sudo get-edid | parse-edid20:22
nyxynThank you20:23
tomreyn(or look at your X initialization log in "journalctl -b", which i think got similar, and more current code.20:23

nyxyntomreyn, do you know what i should grep for in journald?20:28
makara1sarnold: ok thanks, it looks like a multipass snap was causing that. I don't even use that anymore. Lets see if it solves the issue20:28
tomreynnyxyn: EDID20:31
nyxynthanks20:31
tomreynhmm, you don't seem to get the full data set there, though20:32
nyxynand read-edid dint give model name20:32
sarnoldmakara1: any luck?20:33
tomreynnyxyn: i think that's actually somewhat common for laptops. you should see a brand name most of the time, but not neccessarily a model name.20:34
nyxynHmmm ok. Didn't know that20:34
nyxyntomreyn, Any way to see the resolution of the monitor? All I see from read-edid is: DisplaySize 310 17020:35
tomreynnyxyn: read-edid should not report a displaysize but output binary data20:36
nyxyntomreyn, I'm doing the get-edid | parse-edid combo20:36
tomreyni see20:37
tomreynhmm, i get a bogus DislaySize here, too20:38
tomreynor maybe its just the very lowest resolution it can do20:38
nyxynneofetch is returning a display size but I want to make sure it's accurate20:38
tomreynsudo get-edid | parse-edid     does report valid resolutions as "#Not giving standard mode:" for me20:39
nyxyntomreyn, I don't see that line20:40
tomreynyou did use sudo, right?20:41
nyxynYes20:41
nyxynLet me bpaste full output maybe I'm blind20:41
tomreynand xrandr returns what?20:41
nyxynOh xrandr shows it20:42
nyxynSorry I didn't try that one20:42
nyxynThank you tomreyn20:42
sybaritenHey does anyone here have a working beep command with pc speaker? I'm struggling to make this work here20:43
nyxynSo I'm trying to decide whether I'm brave enough to upgrade the screen on my laptop on my own or take it to some store for them to do it.20:45
nyxynNever done this before. Anyone have any experience?20:45

Sven_vBI'm trying to use an Ubuntu focal to chroot into another focal: "<<<y sudo -E chroot /target env HOSTNAME=bob apt-get install --reinstall openssh-server", /target/etc/hostname reads "bob\n", but still the SSH keys are generated with description "root@alice" (alice = outer hostname). why, and how do I fix it?21:36
Sven_vBinteresting. a bash in the chroot sees HOSTNAME=bob but still prompts as root@alice21:47
Sven_vBI see, I have to first run "hostname bob" chroot-ed. all subsequent chroots use the correct hostname.21:50
Sven_vBoh. apparently it also changes the outer hostname.21:50
* Sven_vB reads man unshare21:51
sarnold:)21:51
Sven_vB"sudo unshare --root=/target --net -- sh -c 'hostname bob && hostname'" seems to work, but is it safe to run without --mount-proc?22:07
