tomreynchris64: about your kernel configuration question, head straight over to #ubuntu-kernel, re-ask it there, and bring much patience along. from whati can tell, all pre-built kernel images for the same release and arch use the same configurations, but i'm not 100% sure there. i imagine -oem kernels *may* differ a little (where needed to provide fuinctionality needed by oem patches).17:18
tomreynwith multiple luks containers needed to boot, you'll just get multiple passphrase prompts (if you're using passphrases) by default. they may look differently, depending on when prompting occurs, which dpeends on the file systems they contain.17:18
tomreynpersonally, i'd be (positively) surprised if ubiquity could setup more than a single disk with luks over lvm at install time. but what i learnt about complex installation scenarios is: don't do them, if you don't strictly have to. i.e. anything you can do post install, do it then.17:19
tomreynthis may not apply to subiquity (server installer) anymore, it's actually capable of more complex scripted setups nowadays.17:19
tomreynand from what i read the other day, ubiquity is going to be replaced sooner or later.17:19
Intelochris64: I either encrypted full disk or used luks manual password but I don't know how both will be unencrypted at boot time17:22
tomreynRoseBus: thats right. 465 is (most common use case) an smtp users' email client authenticating against their isp to send mail, and doing so over an SSL encrypted transport, without STARTTLS (so this is the old SSL-only port approach)17:24

gladosccI only have 51MB free in my /boot -- let's hope that's enough space to install20:17
gladoscc(already purged all kernels but the latest and what I am recovering with).20:17
ptahjeremy31 ok20:17
jeremy31gladoscc: File a bug report if you can on  5.4.0-70-generic20:17
gladoscccannot install the latest20:17
gladosccError 24 : Write error : cannot write compressed block20:17
gladosccE: mkinitramfs failure cpio 141 lz4 -9 -l 2420:17
gladosccupdate-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-5.8.0-48-generic with 1.20:17
gladosccis this a hardware error? could my RAID array be having issues?20:18
leftyfbgladoscc: disk space20:18
leftyfbgladoscc: you either have other packages still left to be removed or you have WAY too small of a /boot partition20:18
gladosccmy boot partition is 269M20:18
gladoscc. /dev/md0p1      269M  213M   37M  86% /boot20:18
leftyfbthat's pretty small but should be enough with a well maintained system20:19
gladoscccan I remove 70? the one that won't boot?20:19
gladosccI am recovering in 67.20:19
leftyfbgladoscc: ls -l /boot/ | nc termbin.com 999920:19
gladoscchttps://termbin.com/cxc820:20
jeremy31The initrd for the kernel takes up more space in /boot than you have left20:20
leftyfbgladoscc: try removing 7020:20
leftyfbpurging*20:20
gladoscccool, purged20:21
gladosccdo I need to clean up the 5.8?20:21
gladosccthat seems partially installed?20:21
gladosccor just another attempt at 'apt install linux-image-generic-hwe-20.04' ?20:21
leftyfbgladoscc: sudo apt install --reinstall linux-image-generic-hwe-20.0420:21
gladoscccool, that worked20:23
gladosccinitrd.img, vmlinuz all pointing to 5.8.0-4820:23
gladosccreboot?20:23
leftyfbgladoscc: yep20:24
gladosccfixed. thank you very much leftyfb and jeremy31.20:26
gladoscchave to say, I wonder how this happened20:26
gladoscci did NOT do a distro upgrade or package upgrade or anything like that20:26
leftyfbgladoscc: possible bug with the 5.4.0-70 kernel. If you have the time to do some forensics and to revert to the broken kernel, you should file a bug20:26
gladoscchappy to dig into it and file a bug report, any pointers for what forensics would be helpful?20:28
leftyfb!bug | gladoscc20:28
ubottugladoscc: If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its official !flavors, please report it using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.20:28
leftyfbgladoscc: mainly, getting to a point where you can get both kernels installed and follow the above20:28
gladosccinstalled, not necessarily running right?20:30
gladoscccuz I can only run the 5.8 kernel, i don't think there is anything I can do in 5.4.0-7020:30
leftyfbgladoscc: well, obviously the 5.8 kernel running, but preferably with the 5.4.0-70 not working properly so you can grab data and file the bug20:31
leftyfbgladoscc: just make sure you can reproduce the issue before filing the bug20:31
jeremy31It might be a waste of time if the error occurs too early and no relevant info can be saved to disk20:32
gladoscci reliably cannot boot using 5.4.0-70.   I do not know what conditions caused me to get into this state, so I don't know how to reproduce the "cause".20:32
leftyfbjeremy31: wouldn't just filing a bug against the package itself with a small writeup be beneficial?20:33
jeremy31leftyfb: It could be20:33
gladosccpretty weird cause I'm using RAID0 on enterprise HDDs with ECC memory, so it's unlikely that it's a random bitflip20:33
gladosccs/HDDs/SSDs20:33
jeremy31gladoscc: Include all the hardware info you can20:35
gladosccok yep, filed a bug report with all the info I know https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/192337620:43
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1923376 in linux (Ubuntu) "Unable to boot after reboot, no upgrades." [Undecided,New]20:43
gladoscci'll do further troubleshooting if anyone requests it in the ticket, but at least, maybe it helps the next person who encounters this issue.20:44
jeremy31gladoscc: see if https://askubuntu.com/a/1218004 helps any20:44
jeremy31Might have to rebuild the initramfs for 5.4.0-70 kernel if it is still there20:45
jeremy31sudo update-initramfs -u -k 5.4.0-70-generic20:46
gladosccyep im gonna get some sleep first, tomorrow ill reinstall 7020:46
gladosccand see if that fixes it20:46
gladosccthanks again20:46
=== nckx is now known as jorts
tomreynjeremy31: i'm wondering whether the above is an instance of grub-embedded (classic) bios booting (which was never supported/recommended anyways) no longer working. also, user space was outadted on this system, it should have reported 20.04.2, not 20.04.1.21:04
jeremy31tomreyn: anything is possible21:08
chris64Intelo: mh, I see. When searching the web I found this QA post and answers: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/392284/using-a-single-passphrase-to-unlock-multiple-encrypted-disks-at-boot Maybe the decrypt_keyctl tool mentioned there can help. I don't know whether the situation changed since 201721:24
chris64Intelo: systemd seems to support unlocking multiple drives with the same passphrase: https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/535161/2259621:24
wisciihi, i seem to have gotten into a stale-mate position with dpkg21:26
chris64Intelo: I'm sorry that I cannot help more at the moment. Please try to ask the question again at a later time, to find someone else with more knowledge. I've to leave now. Good luck!21:26
wisciii was trying to install codeblocks but i had a dep which was not met now i have two packages which depend on each other which i can't remove21:27
wisciicodeblocks-wxcontrib-dev depends on codeblocks-wxcontrib-headers (= 20.03); however:21:28
wiscii  Package codeblocks-wxcontrib-headers is to be removed.21:28
wisciiapt does not want to resolve it either21:28
wisciiDebian 'dpkg' package management program version 1.19.7 (amd64).21:30
Bashing-om!info codeblocks-wxcontrib-dev focal | wiscii21:32
ubottuwiscii: Package codeblocks-wxcontrib-dev does not exist in focal21:32
wisciierm .. i think i know what you mean .. but i'm still stuck21:33
Bashing-omwiscii:^^  As apt is unaware of the package - begs the question of where you got it and then is that not a problem for the maintainer to address ?21:33
wisciii got it from codeblocks website21:34
Bashing-omwiscii: I do suggest that you open a dialog with codeblocks to find the root of the issue.21:35
wisciicheerz21:38
wisciiluckily i can rtm21:40
johnfgHi folks.21:41
Bashing-omwiscii: :D - reading is good21:41
johnfgI've got tomboy-ng .27 QT5 installed.  It shows this from an apt search:21:42
johnfgtomboy-ng/now 0.27 amd64 [installed,local]21:43
johnfgI'd like to install v. 32, but it's not available for an apt update.21:43
johnfgDoes the local signify that I installed it from a download?21:44
Bashing-omjohnfg: Not a focal package (tomboy-ng) - what shows ' apt policy tomboy-ng ' for the origination ?21:45
johnfgIt's not snap I guess, as snap find tomboy-ng returns nothing.21:46
johnfgBashing-om: I'll look.21:46
johnfghttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/wCFdxrfbnv/21:47
Bashing-omjohnfg: Yuk - seems too that 'dpkg' is not tracking the package - must be a thrid party fetch. Might see if there are souces in /etc/apt/sources.list or /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ files.21:53
Bashing-omsources*21:53
johnfgI'll do that too.21:54
johnfghttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/36sGZqTdJ3/ I got the update, and I've got this now.  thanks for helping me think through it.21:56
ryan_foohi all. does anyone know what the focal-updates apt repos are?21:58
Bashing-omjohnfg: \o/21:58
Bashing-omryan_foo: many here relate with the repo - what is the real question ?21:59
ryan_foook. good point..21:59
ryan_foo$ cat /etc/issue22:00
ryan_fooUbuntu 20.04.1 LTS \n \l22:00
ryan_foo$sudo apt-get install -y zlib1g-dev22:00

ryan_foohttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/tT4ZGG7H4g/22:01
ryan_fooSo as you see Im trying to install zlib1g-dev.22:01
ryan_foobut apt says "sorry i have 1:1.2.11.dfsg-2ubuntu1.2 installed and you need  same1.1"22:02
Bashing-omryan_foo: "Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS" indicates the saystem is way out of date. what results ' sudo apt update ; sudo apt full-upgrade ' ?22:03
Bashing-omsystem*22:03
ryan_fooapt update looks fine. let me try full-upgrade22:04
Bashing-omryan_foo: "sysop@2004x-c:~$ lsb_release -a >> Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS " .22:05
ryan_fooim not sure a full upgrade is going to update my sources.list !22:08
Bashing-omryan_foo: ?? - update reads the list and does not affect said list .22:09
ryan_fooIf you look at this link https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/zlib1g-dev, the version I want to pick up is in focal-updates.22:10
Bashing-om!full-upgrade | ryan_foo22:10
leftyfbryan_foo: focal-updates should be enabled by default22:10
leftyfbryan_foo: 1:1.2.11.dfsg-2ubuntu1.2 is the latest version available in the ubuntu 20.04 repos22:11
ryan_fooah its commented out .22:11
leftyfbryan_foo: what is your actual issue?22:11
ryan_foohttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/tT4ZGG7H4g/22:12
tomreynyour actual issue seems to be that you chose to disable the focal-updates repository. which you should not.22:12
leftyfbryan_foo: did you run the full-upgrade?22:12
ryan_foohmm. uncommented focal-update and did a update + full-upgrade. still broken...22:15
leftyfbryan_foo: sudo apt update ; sudo apt full-upgrade  # run this first22:15
ryan_foodone22:16
leftyfbryan_foo: apt-cache policy zlib1g-dev | nc termbin.com 999922:16
leftyfbryan_foo: also: lsb_release -d | nc termbin.com 999922:18
tomreyngrep -hEv '^([ ]*#.*)?$' /etc/apt/sources.list{,.d/*.list} 2>&1 | nc termbin.com 999922:18
leftyfbtomreyn: ooo, that's a nice one22:19
tomreyn:) i'm not sure it actually catches everything, but i hope it does22:19
leftyfbryan_foo: ?22:21
ryan_foook, so I uncommented out the focal-updates repos in the apt/sources.list , did the update + full-upgrade and then my package installed. thanks for your assistance all!22:48
ryan_fooHere are the repos .. in case it helps anyone https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/TjsYt5hRvb/22:50
