It works perfectly but it has one "Downloading and installing security updates" which happens before the late-commands are run. YeOldHinnerkHi. I may have stumbled upon a known bug - or it has an entirely different course, which I need help in idenfitiying: I run an Ubuntu server (20.04). When I was trying to do a normal 'sudo apt-get update', the server could not be resolved. So I did a few checks and found that /etc/resolv.conf contains an entry (written there by network manager, as14:02
YeOldHinnerkper comment in the file) which is 127.0.0.53 - but not my real DNS which would 192.168.1.1. The correct DNS has no issues in resolving the server names, I verified that. I follow a few hints on stackexchange but could not get i resolved yet. What should I try next?14:02
YeOldHinnerkI found a bug entry about this behavior, supposedly a systemd bug. But there has to be some way around it...14:03
CustosLimenlarkfisherman: I could, but I want apt get install to not delete the cache after installing14:05
larkfishermanYeOldHinnerk: afaik 127.0.0.53 is served by systemd-resolved. Is systemd-resolved running?14:06
YeOldHinnerkYes.14:06
YeOldHinnerkShould it not be?14:07
larkfishermanYeOldHinnerk: It should, afaik.14:08
YeOldHinnerkI would suppose so too. But why does it not show my normal DNS? Oddly, when I login per web interface and use the gui, the ethernet connections properties show the right DNS. But as I said apt-get can not resolve.14:09
YeOldHinnerkand my best guess is this weird entry in resolv.conf.14:10
YeOldHinnerkbecause that's what nslookup is using.14:10
larkfishermanCustosLimen: The only thing I can think of is if somehow caching is disabled in config. What is the content of "/etc/apt/apt.conf.d"?14:10

YeOldHinnerkLet me rephrase: resolv.conf cotains 127.0.0.53. Then why to the ethernet conenctions know about 192.168.1.1? And why doesn't apt-get use the proper one?14:17
larkfishermanCustosLimen: `Dir::Cache "var/cache/apt";`? :D14:17
larkfishermanCustosLimen: Or was it something else...? Anyways, I'm glad you found it :)14:18
CustosLimenlarkfisherman: it was this file  /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/docker-clean14:18
CustosLimendoing rm stuff inside var/cache/apt14:18
larkfishermanYeOldHinnerk: Did I undestand this right - nslookup properly resolves the apt repository domains, but apt-get doesn't?14:27

Ravagedoes not really sound like a Ubuntu problem to me?16:45
fishbaitthe main router it sharing from is an ubuntu desktop.16:46
kur1jon my client ill do `sudo mount -o async <server> /mnt/data` it will mount properly but when I run `mount` and look at the mount point of /mnt/data it doesn't show async, if I reverse that and do `sync` it will show sync.16:49
kur1jany reason why?16:50
kur1jor is it automatically async?16:50
jonecirioria: I guess I found the problem: typing ifconfig I could see my ip address eding on 5. Opening my /etc/openvpn/server/server.conf I could see "local 192.168.0.3".16:53

mra90what may cause that?18:47
matsamanmra90: which server?18:47
sarnoldmra90: first, check ss -ltp output to make sure that it is listening to the correct address18:47
mra90http server18:48
matsamanapache httpd?18:48
mra90no, own http server in C18:48
mra90but as I said it works on that machine18:48
mra90on that server machine18:48
mra90sarnold, ss -ltp shows that socket18:49
matsamanwhat IP is it working on for that machine?18:49
mra90localhost and ip http://192.168....18:49
sarnold'localhost' isn't an ip18:50
matsamanthese two separate machines are wired into the same switch?18:50
mra90matsaman, over wifi18:52
mra90so wired is not exactly that but yes, same locl network18:53
mra90I try to connect to that machine using IPs taken from ifconfig18:54

matsamandoes the IP:port (not 'localhost') work with a different server?19:03
matsamanpython -m http.server ?19:04
mra90the ip:port doesn;t19:08
mra90let me check python19:08
mra90matsaman, same19:09
mra90I have verified on the third device and this is the same19:13
mra90so I can only connect to that server on the host machine19:13

gordonjcpis there a way to completely blacklist SSIDs in the network picker in Ubuntu?19:28
mra90ok it works on two other devices19:28
gordonjcpfor the avoidance of the XY problem, it's to stop my laptop always joining the wrong network on boot19:28
mra90only not on the one behind a VPN19:29
mra90why is VPS blocking it?19:29
[VMGuy23]in Graphics (in Settings -> About) it used to say "AMD Raven2" but now it says "llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.0, 256 bits)" aftr installing then removing an incompatible driver. I can't configure display settings at all and my second monitor is not displaying. Help19:34
matsamanmra90: it's just configured that way19:35
matsamanmra90: why're you using a VPN if you want it to work as it ordinarily would on the same network19:35
mra90matsaman, yeah I think it make sense19:36
mra90well I sometimes need to connect to VPN in order to do some other work19:36
mra90which requires VPN connection, so I stayed ON it19:36
matsamanah19:38
matsamanyou probably need only be more judicious about turning that off and on19:38
matsamanyou could configure around it, too, though; extra work19:38
mra90yeah I think I would ask my IT department - if that is allowed19:39

hanshi want to install 20.04's lm-sensors on 18.04, how should i do that?20:09
hansh(well doesn't have to be 20.04's, but at least a newer version)20:09
sarnoldhansh: two options, you could try to install the binaries directly from a newer version, follow links on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lm-sensors until you find the packages for the version and architecture you want20:12
sarnoldhansh: but they may refuse to install, in which case backporting them would probably work20:12
sarnoldhansh: if you ahve to do that backport, check out backportpackage from the ubuntu-dev-tools package20:13

kri_Hi, I have problems with dualboot. I installed 20.10 after a Windows10 Installation on a fresh SSD. On startup I get "System BootOrder not found" and ubuntu starts20:39
kri_both installation were done in EFI mode20:39
kri_the notebook ist quite old, the only bios setting regarding efi is "legacy or both"....no secure/fast boot or something similar20:41
jeremy31kri_: any windows entry in > efibootmgr20:41
kri_ efibootmgr  |grep -i win20:42
kri_Boot000A* Windows Boot Manager20:42
jeremy31No Grub menu at boot, just right into Ubuntu, post URL from terminal for>  sudo parted -l | nc termbin.com 999920:44
kri_in BIOS BootOrder there is only one new entry "ubuntu" that is set to first automaticaly20:44
kri_exactly no grub...the error "system bootOrder is not found" is shown for about 5seconds and than ubuntu starts20:44
kri_https://termbin.com/6j2r20:45
jeremy31It shows GPT with an EFI System partition that appears was installed by Windows as it is 105MB, if it was done by Ubuntu it would be about 500 MB20:47
jeremy31kri_: see if a windows entry is shown with>  sudo update-grub20:48
kri_I did not create an EFI partition in Ubuntu install dialog, just selected "manual" and used the free space for / and formated it20:48
kri_Windows Boot Manager auf /dev/sda1@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi gefunden20:49

kri_found :)20:49
jeremy31kri_: Hopefully that will make Grub menu appear at boot so you can select to boot Windows there20:50
kri_I tried this allready, does not help20:50
kri_same sh....ubuntu starts :)20:50
jeremy31kri_: post URL for> cat /etc/default/grub | nc termbin.com 999920:51

IanLiuIf I run `mount -t cifs -o user=user,pass=pass //myserver/dir /mnt' it works. But if I put the line `//myserver/dir /mnt user=user,pass=pass 0 0` in /etc/fstab I get cifs_mount failed w/return code = -13. Why is that?20:52
jeremy31kri_: in terminal> gedit admin:///etc/default/grub20:53
jeremy31change GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden to GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu  #then save and exit and do another sudo update-grub and reboot20:54
sarnoldIanLiu: I think I've heard that 'funny' characters in the username or password can be misparsed out of the fstab version; try sticking to 'safe' characters like digits and alphabetical chars20:54
kri_jeremy31: same :(20:55
jeremy31kri_: you rebooted already?20:56
kri_yes sure20:56
jeremy31kri_: If that computer is from about 2012 or earlier, you might have to switch to Legacy only and reinstall Windows and Ubuntu20:58
kri_jeremy31: it is from 2011 and I thought about that too. But 20.10 is not supported in legacy I think20:59
jeremy31kri_: 20.10 should support both yet21:00
kri_jeremy31: great to hear....I will try this21:01
kri_Thanks for your time :)21:01

Perko/ Howdy, I'm using the ESM repo for Trusty, but I'm getting MD5 mismatches. I've cleaned up the files in /var/lib/apt/lists but still showing issues21:28
PerkW: Failed to fetch https://esm.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/trusty-infra-security/main/binary-amd64/Packages  Hash Sum mismatch21:28
PerkThis appears to be an upstream issue21:28
PerkI hope I'm reporting it correctly :)21:28
sarnoldPerk: look around in /var/lib/apt/lists for the download -- it might be in partial/, I'm not too sure..21:31
sarnoldPerk: read the contents of the thing, the usual problem is silly proxies doing silly things, but maybe whatever is in the file will give you a good idea of what went worng21:31
PerkRock on, will do. Thanks!21:31
kri_jeremy31: windows is installed now, just clicked through ubuntu installation and in the end the installed warns that there is not EFI partition and ubuntu may fail to start21:38
kri_Ii forced to continue now but it sounds not really good21:39
sarnoldPerk: heh, yeah, it might be a problem upstream. I'm poking around. :) thanks!21:39
jeremy31kri_: is BIOS set to Legacy only?21:39
kri_jeremy31, yes I set it to legacy only21:40
jeremy31kri_: did you get a text grub screen when you booted the ISO?21:40
kri_yes21:40
kri_and /sys/firmware/efi does not exist21:41
kri_so the installer started the legacy mode21:41
jeremy31kri_: That was the EFI boot then, there is a different boot in Legacy mode with a graphic that has something about automatic start in 10 seconds21:41
kri_hmmm yes I know the graphic you mean21:42
kri_but shouldn't there be /sys/firmware/efi now?21:43
kri_when it really started in EFI mode?21:43
jeremy31kri_: check in terminal>  mokutil --sb-state21:44
kri_EFI vars are not supported on this system21:45
kri_I am still wondering if 20.10 is fine with legacy...I was reading something that the support was stopped with 20.0421:45
jeremy31kri_: I am not sure why it is complaining about no EFI system partition then21:45
kri_ok I will finish the installation and hope :)21:46
jeremy31kri_: how did you put the ISO on USB?21:46
sarnoldkri_,jeremy31, perhaps related https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/191515221:46
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1893964 in ubiquity (Ubuntu Hirsute) "duplicate for #1915152 Installation of Ubuntu Groovy with manual partitioning without an EFI System Partition fails on 'grub-install /dev/sda' even on non-UEFI systems" [High,Fix released]21:46
kri_jeremy31, I am using a DVD21:47
kri_usb did not start in legacy mode21:48
kri_so I tried to burn it and that seemed to work :)21:48
jeremy31kri_: any reason not to use 20.04 on that machine?  20.04 is supported until 2025 and 20.10 is only supported until this August21:49
kri_no reason, 20.04 would be also fine21:49
kri_but the website stated that >=20.04 does not support legacy21:50
kri_so you think I should give 20.04 a try?21:51
jeremy31kri_: I doubt that is correct, as I am using Mint that is based on Ubuntu 20.04 on another computer and it works in Legacy boot21:51
kri_ok than I am going to download it21:52
jeremy31kri_: It is just the boot loader(grub) that needs to support Legacy.  I haven't heard that grub-pc was dropped21:53
kri_ok21:53
kri_https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-legacy-server/releases/20.04.1/release/21:55
kri_for server images there is a "legacy" version21:55
kri_for the desktop version that does not seem to exist, right?21:56
jeremy31kri_: Do you want GUI or server?21:57
kri_hm installation failed with an grub error. but when rebooting grub comes up and entries for ubuntu and windows seem good22:01
kri_should I be happy with that?22:03
jeremy31kri_: see if the menu options work22:03
kri_just started ubuntu and it works22:03
kri_doing the updated now and will try windows after that22:04
jeremy31kri_: ok22:04
kri_jeremy31, ok I just did an update-grub und grub-install /dev/sda2. Both worked fine. Windows and Ubuntu boot fine22:10
kri_eh /dev/sda not 2...22:11
jeremy31kri_: good, grub gets installed to drive and not a partition for most installs22:13
kri_yes that was just a typo22:13
