ubottuHi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!11:14
MariaDiazHow can I check (without launching my PC) if 21.04 update is available?11:42
MariaDiazis it / will it be written somewhere?11:44
MariaDiazit seems like a stupid question, but it isn't. The problem is I was impatient. Tried to upgrade from 20.10 to 21.04 but for no luck. Read somewhere that `-d` would help. But I was too impatient to figure out what `-d` does. Then some weird bugs appeared... and I understood what I had done. After reinstalling everything I've finally figured out that11:51
MariaDiazthere is no 21.04 to upgrade from previous versions.11:51
Ashburryhello everyone12:11
Ashburry3~/disonnect12:12
MariaDiazHow can I check (without launching my PC) if 21.04 update is available?12:32
MaikMariaDiaz: the upgrade may show in a few days12:39
Maikif you want to upgrade now do: sudo do-release-upgrade -d12:39
MaikMariaDiaz: which version are you on right now?12:40
Maikoh, 20.10 i see12:40
Maiksudo do-release-upgrade -d should work though12:41
MariaDiazI tried this, and run into many bugs unfortunately12:46
Maikbugs or errors?12:46
MariaDiazusually I install from mini.iso (the last one was made for 20.04)12:46
MariaDiazthen I just upgrade. It worked fine12:46
MariaDiazbugs and errors also12:47
Maikthen just download the xubuntu 21.04 iso instead and install12:47
MariaDiazI can't, because when I do so it doesn't boot with my dualboot, and also I don't need all of the Xubuntu additional packages12:48
MariaDiazI use mini.iso just to install xubuntu-core^ task12:48
MariaDiazYou told me that the upgrade may show in a few days. Is there some page when I can check if the upgrade is available? I just work too much, I don't have enough free time to use my notebook every time12:50
krytarikhttp://changelogs.ubuntu.com/meta-release - would be it.12:50
MariaDiazThis is the right thing, this is exactly what I needed. I deeply appreciate your help! :312:51
krytarikI wouldn't expect it to work then any better though..12:51
MariaDiazWell... Btw, is it acceptable to upgrade from 20.04 to 21.04? or I'll experience bugs and should upgrade to 20.10 at first?12:53
krytarikYeah, I believe jumping releases is never a good idea really.12:55
Maikyou need to upgrade to 20.10 first then 21.0412:55
MariaDiazguys, really big thanks to you for the pieces of advice!12:55
Maikyw12:55
MariaDiazIt is sad that mini.iso isn't supported anymore. It is convenient to install the basic packages and then to add only necessary things. I bought a used notebook for $40, it was made in 2010. 1 GB RAM... kind of weak computer, but awesome with Linux :313:00
cristian_hello, i'm needing some help with my xubuntu 21.04 installation15:13
pmjdebruijnjust ask15:13
cristian_Everytime that the system is going to shutdown, it freezes for like 20 seconds15:13
pmjdebruijnif someone knows, they'll respond15:13
pmjdebruijncristian_: what do you mean with freezes, and when exactly?15:14
cristian_I could record the problem and upload it, so you guys can see15:14
cristian_Is it a good way?15:14
tomreynwhen it happens, press escape to get to the text console, and take a photo /such as with a smartphone or tab) and upload it.15:15
tomreynthen post the url here15:16
cristian_Ok! I'll do it and share it with you. I'll be right back!15:16
cristian_Hi guys, I have just recorded the error: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17bohQ6OH63VA2Z8OOKgxMHOtgrj-42ns/view?usp=sharing15:20
cristian_I tried to press ESC, but no additional information was provided, as you can see in the video15:20
cristian_This same error happened with xubuntu 21.04 and kubuntu 21.04. This has never happened before on 20.04 flavors15:22
tomreyncristian_: try hitting escape before the progress ring gets stuck, or boot with without the "quiet" kernel command line parameter15:26
tomreyn!kernelparm15:26
ubottuTo add a one-time or permanent kernel boot parameter see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters15:26
cristian_Thanks, I'll try and record it again15:29
cristian_Hey guys, I just tried to press ESC before the freeze and it worked! The restart process didn't freeze in this case15:36
cristian_I also tried removing splash parameter (keeping only quiet) and that also worked, even not pressing ESC15:36
tomreynoh, that's at least a potential workaround then, but it doesn't really help us understand what failed.15:37
cristian_I will share the recording of the additional information shown when I pressed ESC, maybe that can help15:37
tomreyncool. maybe something related to plymouth, if it only hapens while you remain in grpahics mode.15:38
cristian_I'm thinking that it is related to prime graphic cards (Nvidia + intel HD graphics)15:40
cristian_But I tried changing from performance mode (Nvidia only) to on demand (intel primary and nvidia on demand) and the error persisted15:41
cristian_Here is the recording of the additional information: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17kA2WiAdLKp_KON7xhY65U-eN6RPC2t4/view?usp=sharing15:42
cristian_Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17nZgCEPC73aviYTXXWfnT55n6NKUp-F7/view?usp=sharing15:45
tomreynthere's no error message on the screen shown before it rebooted (in the latest video you posted)+15:46
tomreynwhich is also depicted by this screens hot15:46
cristian_Is there any other way that I can help you understand what is failing?15:47
tomreyntry reproducing the issue once more, then reboot, and run, without rebooting again, run   journalctl -keb -1 | nc termbin.com 999915:47
tomreynignore the second "run", thats a typo on my part15:47
cristian_Ok, will be right back!15:49
cristian_Just runned the command provided: https://termbin.com/4qvl15:57
cristian_ran*15:58
tomreynhmm no error there either, at least none for shutdown.16:01
cristian_Really weird since those freezes don't occur on xubuntu 20.0416:04
tomreynLTS releases will usually get more shoe polish, which can also help with difficult-to-get-right ahrdware configurations such as your graphics chipset combo16:09
tomreynmuxless switching is the pain, and getting nvidia drivers to work can be, too.16:10
tomreynyou're on the latest 'bios', but still with some acpi hiccups16:11
tomreyn!acpi_osi helps sometimes, maybe not here, though.16:11
ubottutomreyn: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)16:11
tomreyn!acpi_osi16:11
ubottuIf your system is unstable or power management does not work well and logs show ACPI issues, you can try to make the Linux kernel pretend it was Windows during boot (which can help on hardware which was only tested with Windows): http://iam.tj/prototype/enhancements/Windows-acpi_osi.html16:11
cristian_I'll try that ACPI configuration that you shared. Thanks, tomreyn!16:36
tomreynyou're welcome16:40
tomreynsee also the note on backlights on your logs, see whether this applies to you (probably not)16:41

proogiat least to safe my files18:12
irgendwer4711haha, your files are not safe with windows, delete that.18:13
tomreyncertainly you should have backups of any data that matters to you, generally, and especially before you start things that can easily go wrong, such as extending single boot to  dual boot setups.18:24
tomreynproogi: ^ this said, if you'll reinstall ubuntu while booting in uefi mode, i think the windows installation will be found and you should be able to boot both18:24
