[01:34] I am having trouble booting into my xubuntu system, when I installed the os I used lvm and encryption. Now when I boot that system up I get the prompt to unlock the drive and enter the password. but then it fails to busybox initrams. I tried to use the fsck command but that also just says fsck from util-linux 2.34 [04:33] Hello, has anyone had problems with external wireless switches? I recently installed xubuntu on an old computer of mine, but its wireless switch doesn't work anymore. If I turn it on it still stays red. It used to work on windows but now it doesn't turn on with xubuntu. I reset the BIOS settings to default and tried sudo rfkill unblock all but [04:33] apparently everything is already unblocked. The computer is an HP Pavilion dv6105us. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [04:37] xu-irc28w, secure boot on? [04:43] no, I don't think the BIOS settings of the laptop even have a secure boot option [04:45] xu-irc28w, run: lspci -nnk | grep Net -A3 | nc termbin.com 9999 [04:45] share the url [04:46] nc: getaddrinfo for host "termbin.com" port 9999: Temporary failure in name resolution [04:47] ok then just [04:48] !pastebin [04:48] For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use https://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use https://imgur.com/ !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic. [04:52] first* [04:56] https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/p3g2Y9NpVV/ this is the output [05:02] xu-irc28w, run: sudo apt purge bcmwl-kernel-source [05:02] tell me when done [05:08] done, got an error https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/kWKrRjRhRq/ [05:09] now run: sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer [05:11] https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/txqBhJHTKp/ [05:13] sudo apt update && sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer [05:14] same result? [05:14] yeah [05:15] what Xubuntu version? [05:16] 18.04, the laptop is 32-bits [05:17] !eol [05:17] End-Of-Life is when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop. Make sure to update Ubuntu before it goes EOL so you get updates promptly for newly-discovered security vulnerabilities. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOL and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more info. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades [05:18] I knew about eol but it was the latest xubuntu version supporting 32 bit architecture. Should I try installing another distro? [05:19] You could look into Debian? It still has 32bit. [05:21]  I'll check it out. thanks for trying though [05:22] xu-irc28w, https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current-live/i386/iso-hybrid/debian-live-10.9.0-i386-xfce+nonfree.iso [05:23] download that, write to an USB drive, boot live and see if wifi works. [05:24] ok, it's the latest version right? [05:26] yep latest stable. [05:27] alright thanks have a nice one [05:28] At this point I'd likely just install bullseye, avoids a release jump and it's rather close to release. [05:29] no clue how stable D11 is at this point. [08:31] so I tried to install Xubuntu 20.04.2.0 on a VMware 16.x virtual machine, and it came up with an error message. [08:31] my VM's specs are: 512MB memory, 1 processor core active, 28GB SCSI hard disk, SATA disc drive, and 3D acceleration disabled. [08:32] you need at least 2GB memory to let it run smooth 3 to 4 GB would be even better [08:33] ok I'll try that [08:33] 512 is going to have issues unpacking the initramfs with both amd and intel firmware in there, I suggest at least 1G, more if you ever plan on opening a browser or libreoffice. [08:33] xu-help3w: 512MB will work for a server install, not a desktop, essentially [08:35] thank you guys that worked [14:34] Je veux un clavier suisse français et non suisse allemand. [16:50] Need help. >> I have 2 OS on 2 different drives with GRUB Dual Boot WINDOWS ---- Ubuntu, Linux >>> I want to connect remotely to either/or vise versa doesnt matter thru which OS [16:58] Have you installed os-prober? [16:58] Yes. i have grub setup [17:03] I can Dual Boot on PowerUP... I need access to my other OS using it Remotely, for programs. OS Prober is used for installing config GRUB for dual booting and choosing an OS on boot...thats already done... i need access to both... hence why i want to access One while on the other. [17:03] I'm thinking maybe a Virtual Machine [17:04] With Windows already installed, config'd. and ready maybe VM will see it as such and I can use it remotely as so. [17:05] Ah,you can try virtualbox or vmware(I'm sorry that my English is very poor... [17:08] I often use virtualbox. [17:23] LINUXUBUNTU-BRAN: it's really not sure exactly what you're looking for [17:23] LINUXUBUNTU-BRAN: maybe VNC? [17:23] uhm [17:23] oh wait [17:23] virtualbox/vmware/kvm will not easily boot an OS from a different partition [17:24] if anything kvm will be the most likely candidate [17:24] LINUXUBUNTU-BRAN: it's a bit unclear why you would want this [17:25] if you just have a few windows programs you need, it would probably make more sense to install a VM (kvm?) instead of dual booting at all [17:26] you might want to elaborate on your actual usecase [18:22] if LINUXUBUNTU-BRAN returns then tell him not to cross post the same question in every channel [22:04] is there a way to modify the XFCE config without starting X? [22:08] a1fa: Check out the ~/.config/xfce4* directories [22:16] gnrp: re those binary? [22:16] a1fa: No, it's plaintext files (xml or other formats) [22:16] hm [22:16] you have to say what you actually want to change [22:16] I'm off to bed now, though. gn8 ;) [22:17] no clue.. i am having crashes - cant start xfce over lightdm+tigervnc [22:17] it's complaining about llvmpipe [23:50] part
