robertparkerxis 'ssh -p 8022 ip' correct ?00:38
robertparkerxfor some reason it's not working in my case but just wonder00:38
sarnoldwhat does "not working" mean?00:39
robertparkerxit's not connecting from my server manager server to another server like I thought it would normally00:39
robertparkerxI thought maybe it is because I had to use parathesis or something else00:40
sarnoldwhat's a server manager server? what error message are you getting? are you sure the sshd on the remote server is listening on that port?00:40
robertparkerxno error it jjust sits00:40
robertparkerxyes I'm sure it is that port00:41
robertparkerxWell the server manager server is just a name for the server that allow access and manage all servers00:41
sarnoldokay, that sounds a little bit like you've got a firewall that drops packets, rather than rejects packets00:41
robertparkerxOkay so it isn't my syntax or anytng like that00:42
robertparkerxanything*00:42
sarnoldyeah, that should be fine00:43

MikeRLWell, I converted my disk setup to RAID0 on my desktop. Too many drives after I added 2 NVMe SSDs. Problem is, the UUID is now incorrect and I get an error dropping me to a shell. I am trying to resolve the issue but the Ubuntu Live CD won't pick up the RAID array.21:52
MikeRLFor some reason changing stuff to RAID0 didn't mess up Win10, but Ubuntu won't boot. I don't recall the exact error but I can check soon.21:52
MikeRLSaid something along the lines of "missing modules cat /proc/modules ls /dev"21:53
TJ-MikeRL: with what tool did you "convert to RAID0" and what was the config previously?21:54
MikeRLWell I used the BIOS.21:54
MikeRLI think the live cd doesn't support raid but the alt cd does.21:54
TJ-MikeRL: so, Soft/Fake RAID then21:55
sorta_noobErrors begin with "Failed to start gnome-session" (ignored warnings about things that didn't seem critical). A bunch of errors about radeon (I don't think this laptop has an amd chip, but I may be wrong, think it's just intel graphics) Some Wayland crashes, some failed dbus writes (says connection closed).21:55
MikeRLI am guessing so yes.21:55
MikeRLPreviously was SATA.21:55
TJ-MikeRL: in which case, depending on which FakeRAID it is, you may need to add something in the Live Environment to recognise those devices21:56
MikeRLTJ-, How do I figure out what to add?21:56
TJ-MikeRL: Are you using the LiveISO 'Try' option right now?21:56
MikeRLAnd how do I determine the type of FakeRAID?21:56
MikeRLYes the try option right now.21:56
MikeRLIf I gotta leave it I can do IRC on my Android phone.21:57
TJ-MikeRL: great! Open a terminal and check if "mdadm" runs or reports not found21:57
MikeRLNot the most efficient byt it works.21:57
MikeRLI actually installed that from a live session already after googling the error.21:57
sarnoldMikeRL: this guide hasn't been updated in six years, and it even looks like it was probably old even then, but maybe it's helpful https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SoftwareRAID21:57
TJ-MikeRL: you're still in the same sessions?21:57
MikeRLSame session, yes.21:58
MikeRLIs there any way I can save my old install in the process of fixing said error?21:58
MikeRLI hope so as it took ages to setup/21:58
TJ-MikeRL: great. show us what's there right now so we can see how to proceed: " pastebinit <( lsblk ) "21:58
MikeRLhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/cQ7bsGwHff/21:59
sorta_noobOK, I looked up the specs and this laptop does indeed have an AMD Fire Pro chip. I  feel I should to try to blacklist it and see if that helps. Doing my own looking up to remind myself how to blacklist a graphics chip.21:59
MikeRLI think SDA1 is a standard SSD.22:00
MikeRLThat's what it shows as in gparted.22:00
MikeRLsdb is the live usb.22:00
MikeRLThe BIOS did complain without RAID enabled. I think because of the third disk.22:03
TJ-MikeRL: it looks as if the other drives aren't being seen at all22:04
MikeRLYeah same conclusion here.22:04
TJ-MikeRL: we need to look at the kernel log: " pastebinit <( journalctl -k ) "22:04
MikeRLI think I need the alternative install disk later.22:04
MikeRLhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/msCNHmyQF9/22:04
TJ-MikeRL: hmm, so only ata1 is found (1.8TB) - ata2-ata4 are all showing link down. How many devices are connected and are they on SATA connections?22:07
MikeRLTJ-, 3 devices internally connected and one is a regular SSD. 2 are NVMe SSDs using RAID0. Reg SSD is using SATA I think.22:08
TJ-MikeRL: the NVMEs are in the M.2 sockets (looking at the mothernoard manual right now) ?22:09
MikeRLYes the M2 sockets.22:09
MikeRLMy theory is it's impossible to fix this from a live usb that's not an alt installer. But there has to be something that can be done to save that data. I made backups.22:10
sorta_noobI found instructions about blacklisting radeon by creating /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and adding the line "blacklist radeon", however after rebooting and trying to login it still fails the same way. The journal still shows all the radeon errors. I'm guessing that something's wrong with my blacklist?22:11
MikeRLDoes anyone know why the regular Live install won't pick up RAID arrays at all? It seems weird.22:11
TJ-MikeRL: it's Intel RST. We have a wiki article about it. It's only an overview but gives some context. https://help.ubuntu.com/rst/index.html22:12
TJ-MikeRL: ANYthing is possible from the Live env22:12
apb1963TJ-, Peace, freedom & good will towards men? :D22:12
sorta_noobOK, it just got weirder. I went ahead and tried "startx" from console... and it started... looking at initial setup from first login.  But I can't start an xsession from the login screen....22:14
AlexPortablehow do I expose different ports in audio to be used at the same time by applications? right now i can only select 'built-in analog stereo', but not which port (3.5mm or spdif)22:17
MikeRLWould just switching back to SATA make any difference? I planned on using the two NVMe SSDs for booting Ubuntu and 10. The other SSD was for media storage.22:17
sarnoldAlexPortable: the pavucontrol application usually makes theses kinds of questions easy22:17
sarnoldMikeRL: probably it'd be way easier, almost no one uses the motherboard-based 'fake raid things22:18
TJ-MikeRL: AHCI mode would be preferred. It does look like the Intel RST on that mobo isn't exposed to the kernel - I'm still digging though22:18
TJ-FakeRAID is only useful in dual-boot scenarios to share the storage easily22:19
MikeRLSo not much of use.22:19
MikeRLLast time I listen to the BIOS warning.22:19
MikeRLWas about it being slower.22:19
AlexPortablesarnold: no, it's not being listed there, since it's a sink with multiple ports, and pavu only lists sinks22:20
TJ-MikeRL: I'm reading a recent arch-linux forum thread with a similar mobo, and the person there found that NVME Intel RST didn't show up to Linux, but via SATA did22:22
MikeRLTJ-, do you have a link?22:22
sarnoldAlexPortable: ahhhhhhh22:23
TJ-MikeRL: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=24858822:23
MikeRLGood news is the backups I made were made before messing with this and made today.22:23

sorta_noobAfter some research and playing around, here is my current state: Fresh wiped disk, install 21.04 from DVD, install goes fine, after install dvd removed and boots from hdd fine. Found errors about radeon, weyland, and gnome-session. Tried to blacklist radeon. Didn'22:28
sorta_noobt help. However, startx from tty2 starts the xsession just fine. Suggestions for how to proceed?22:28
TJ-MikeRL: does this confirm the module is loaded? "lsmod | grep rst"22:30
TJ-MikeRL: there was nothing to show it loaded in the kernel log, but some modules are silent22:30
MikeRLit outputs "intel_rst              16384  0"22:31
haijunocool22:31
MikeRLSo it's loaded.22:31
MikeRLI think.22:32
MikeRLUnless the 0 means no.22:32
TJ-MikeRL: good! now lets try to poke around. " pastebinit <( sudo mdadm --detail-platform ) "22:32
TJ-MikeRL: '0' means zero handles/references taken (each user increments that count. Module can't be unloaded unless that is 0)22:33

MikeRLThe one not using RAID ofc.22:38
TJ-MikeRL: also, please show me " pastebinit <( sudo lspci -vvvnnk ) "22:38
MikeRLhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/wSmkxFf5hb/22:38
TJ-MikeRL: mdadm found only the SATA controller. I suspect it doesn't scan NVME controllers so the lspci report will help determine if the controllers are seen at least22:39
TJ-MikeRL: this is the one mdadm found "00:17.0 RAID bus controller [0104]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:06d6]"22:40
MikeRLSo what to do? Is this fixable? I don't wanna be rude but I gotta make dinner soon and get ready for work.22:41
MikeRLIf the thing is too big of a headache, I can always go back to SATA.22:41
MikeRLI do thank you for the help regardless.22:42
TJ-MikeRL: no sign of NVME devices - they'd have class [0108] - I suspect they are behind one of the two PCI bridges 00:1c.0 or 00:1c.4 - most likely the first since its resources show as [disabled]22:43

TJ-MikeRL: Now, there is a slight chance a kernel option may help. Linux uses what ACPI tells it about bridges, and it may be the BIOS change doesn't update what ACPI reports. There's an option you can add that tells Linux to ignore ACPI and probe hard. "PCI: Using host bridge windows from ACPI; if necessary, use "pci=nocrs" and report a bug"22:48
TJ-MikeRL: are you familiar with manually adding a kernel command-line option at boot-time?22:48
MikeRLHow do I do that? Hover over a grub entry and press e?22:49
sorta_noobAlexPortable no, I didn't. Got a suggestion in that regard? I've always just used the Ubuntu defaults (gnome or Unity, or whatever). I used xfce and a few others in other distros, but never tried changing Ubuntu's defaults.22:49
AlexPortablei'm not sure which is light enough to run, but you might be able to try xfce or lxde22:49
TJ-MikeRL: yes, then navigate down to the line starting "linux ..." and add " pci=nocrs " and then press Ctrl+X to boot with that change22:49
AlexPortableswitch to ctrl+alt+f1 (i think), login into terminal and install the desired desktop environment22:50
AlexPortablethen switch to it with the right bottom button when you login22:50
TJ-MikeRL: this is a long shot but it /may/ work (but Intel don't really want to support RST on Linux)22:50
sorta_noobAlexPortable It does load an xsession from tty2 (using "startx"), just not from login.22:51
MikeRLWIll try. Have to exit and reenter on phone.22:52
sorta_noobAlexPortable I'm installing xfce by installing the metapackage, "sudo apt-get install xfce4" any expected config I'm going to need to do after the install finishes?22:54
AlexPortablenot sure22:55
MikeRLSadly the command didn't work. I'll reformat as SATA.22:55
TJ-MikeRL: Good plan. Some good info on why, here https://community.intel.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Tech-and-RAIDing-PCIe-NVMe-SSD-cards/td-p/34460622:56
TJ-MikeRL: another here that MAY make it work. It gives options to set in BIOS. My eyes are drawn to "M.2 Slot X RST PCIe Storage Remapping" https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-NUCs/Why-can-t-Intel-RST-see-either-NVMe-drive-quot-No-disks/td-p/45231423:00
sorta_noobAlexPortable after installing xfce4, the DE switching button described earlier appears on the login screen. 2 choices, the already selected "ubuntu" and "ubuntu on xorg". Switched to "ubuntu on xorg" and tried logging in. Same result, a return to login screen. Possible issue was already running xsession on tty2, so I rebooted and am about to try again.23:01
=== edb is now known as FiremanEd
sorta_noobStill fails, the de swap button not there. Found possible issue, need "xubuntu-desktop". Installing that now.23:04
sorta_noobxubuntu-desktop install made me choose between lightdm and gdm3. Chose to switch to lightdm in case it's about gdm3.23:06
TJ-MikeRL: Linux patch-set here to enable it, refused by maintainers, but some very good explanations as to what a mess Intel RST on NVMe is. https://lore.kernel.org/linux-pci/20190620061038.GA20564@lst.de/T/23:13
sorta_noobAlexPortable well, I wasn't planning on Xfce, but xfce just worked. I'm gonna give this a go for a while and see how I like it. Been a long time since I used xfce....23:15
sorta_noobI wonder why gnome/weyland/unity or whatever Ubuntu 21.04 is using by default is failing....23:16
AlexPortableno idea, but you can at least diagnose it a bit better now23:19
sorta_noobYeah. Now I'm gonna work on the radeon stuff. Maybe try fglrx or that new amd driver.23:20
AlexPortableHow do I expose different ports in audio to be used at the same time by applications? right now i can only select 'built-in analog stereo', but not which port (3.5mm or spdif)?23:22
sarnoldAlexPortable: oh man still no luck? :( there's folks in #lau who may have ideas23:23
sorta_noobWell, ubuntu's proprietary graphics driver installer doesn't think I'm elligible for fglrx, I don't think I want to try and force it in manually.23:23
AlexPortablesarnold: will try there thanks23:23
TJ-AlexPortable: have you experimented with "pactl --set-sink-port ..." ?23:27
AlexPortableTJ-: yes, that sets it, but doesn't allow both ports to be seen by applications like skype23:27
TJ-AlexPortable: does the internal wiring allow multiple ports from one codec/sink ?23:28
AlexPortableon windows it does, so I think yes23:28
TJ-AlexPortable: I'd expect, if it is possible, you'd have to do some pretty low-level (hardware pin control, below ALSA) changes23:29
AlexPortablewhere would I change that?23:29
TJ-AlexPortable: it'd me a kernel thing. Possibly not the way, but generally that is how the internals of the devices is programmed23:34
AlexPortableI just tested, I can create two new sinks in the config file to split them up, but the audio quality is lower and very quiet23:35
TJ-Did you do something like this? https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/401492/how-to-output-unique-audio-to-multiple-ports-profiles-of-a-pulseaudio-card23:39
kevrI've got this ~/.config/mimeapps.list, somehow generated by some applications: http://sprunge.us/DfwQAY23:47
kevrEven though it says pdf should be launched with firefox.desktop, it keeps using evince to do so.23:47
kevri'm a bit confused.23:48
kevrideas?23:48
kevrOK, well. I should have probably dabbled a bit more before asking. I noticed in that file it set it up as "Added Associations," I was thinking... if somewhere else a default was set, perhaps that is somehow overriding the added association23:49
kevrso i took the [Added Associations] and just dumped them into the [Default Applications] section instead.23:50
kevrFixed it.23:50
kevrI wonder how this got broken in the first place, though. I did not change this file manually until now.23:50
kevrSeems after I installed evince, something happened which caused it to be used as default for pdfs23:51
