=== genii is now known as genii-core === Lord_of_Life_ is now known as Lord_of_Life [04:19] KDE Hackday at https://foss-north.se/2021/ today for the last day [11:43] Is LTS supported for 5 or 3 years? The wikipedia article on Kubuntu seems to have conflicting info in text vs table. [11:50] silver_hook: I find the situation a bit confusing, too. My understanding is -- the "base" Ubuntu packages are supported for five years, while the Kubuntu-specific "universe" packages are supported by the Kubuntu community for three years. [11:51] silver_hook: Kubuntu LTS is only supported for 3 years [11:52] Main Ubuntu LTS 5 years, all other LTS flavours 3 years [11:53] Mekaneck: And yet, presumably Kubuntu LTS gets kernel updates for five years? [11:53] That, kinda(?) makes sense? [11:53] silver_hook: run: ubuntu-security-status [12:05] alkisg: Thanks :) [12:13] "1726 packages installed, of which: 1260 receive package updates until 1/2022". So what is the status of the non-"receive updates" packages? [12:20] remline: likely third-party, aka not Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Plasma made [12:20] e.g. Libreoffice or the like [12:22] Mamarok: That could be. However, I have seen Libreoffice get updates, e.g., "libreoffice (1:7.1.3-0ubuntu0.21.04.1) hirsute" on 7 May 2021. [12:23] And ubuntu-security-status --thirdparty reveals "You have no packages installed from a third party." [12:24] remline: that was a guess, since I have no idea what you ahve installed on your system :-) [12:26] Mamarok: They are all packages from the hirsute archives, except for "dropbox". [12:33] Running an unmodified Kubuntu live system, I see "1973 packages installed; 1281 receive package updates until 1/2022". That leaves 692 packages which supposedly don't receive updates...? [12:51] "apt list '~suniverse ~i' | wc" reveals that the "unsupported" packages listed by ubuntu-security-status are simply the packages in the universe section. This implies, in a sense, that KDE packages are unsupported from day one. [13:14] remline: unsupported by Ubuntu doesn't mean unsupported at all [13:18] Mamarok: Agreed, but it does mean that the 5-year vs. 3-year LTS support terms are... confusing to the user. [15:05] remline: hirsuite isn't LTS. The 3/5 years of support are for LTS editions [15:06] In a MATE 20.04 that I have open: ubuntu-security-status => 3334 packages installed, of which: \n 2145 receive package updates with LTS until 4/2025 \n 1135 could receive security updates with ESM Apps until 4/2030 === genii-core is now known as genii [15:40] remline: 5 years is for servers or base systems in LTS, 3 years for LTS in general, everything else is the normal support. And yes, Hirsute is not lTS anyway, so not covered [15:41] and servers means not desktop related, so all things GUI would be 3 years in an LTS [15:43] see also https://ubuntu.com/blog/what-is-an-ubuntu-lts-release et al. === ubot3 is now known as ubottu === ubottu is now known as ubot3 === ubot3 is now known as ubottu [21:03] !lts [21:03] LTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions are supported for 5 years on the desktop and server. The latest LTS version of Ubuntu is !Focal (Focal Fossa 20.04). Ubuntu !flavors may have different support durations, check their release notes for information. [21:39] hello
