anarchotaoist[m]Hello all! I just used the Ubuntu Studio installer to setup the Studio packages on Kubuntu Hirsute Hippo. I now do not have sound. Previously I was using Cadence but the installer removed it. What do I use now? How do I get sound. ps I am a sound noob. Thanks.12:18
anarchotaoist[m]Bitwig plays sound but I have no control over volume from keyboard or settings. Other apps have no sound.12:24
MauroGaspari[m]<anarchotaoist[m] "Hello all! I just used the Ubunt"> I always use ubuntu studio installer on my Ubuntu Budgie. Yes there have been some changes.12:29
MauroGaspari[m]I wrote a tutorial for both Ubuntu Studio, and Ubuntu Budgie (works on other flavors as well) and Studio tools. Would you like me to forward those to you?12:30
anarchotaoist[m]Thanks, that would be welcomed!12:30
MauroGaspari[m]give me a minute, fetching the links12:34
MauroGaspari[m]anarcho taoist sorry, it appears the site is down. Please bear with me. I contacted webmaster and will post links as soon as it is up again.13:14
anarchotaoist[m]Ok, thanks. No worries! I am going to bed soon so hopefully you have better news for me tomorrow! Cheers!13:16
MauroGaspari[m]<anarchotaoist[m] "Ok, thanks. No worries! I am goi"> sleep well, stay tuned for those links!13:18
OvenWerksanarchotaoist[m]: cadence and studio-controls will not work together. So when studio-controls is installed the system removes cadence. However, cadence installs audio config files that change how the audio works and because these config files are installed in the user directory, they are not removed when cadence is.13:53
OvenWerksanarchotaoist[m]: You should be able to remove ~/.config/pulse (rm -r ~/.config/pulse)13:56
OvenWerksanarchotaoist[m]: There may be another file they use as well, but I think that one will make a difference13:56
OvenWerksEickmeyer[k]: do you remember the other? I think it is an alsa config file13:57
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: I don't remember off the top of my head, but as I recall this walking people through removing it is why we decided not to support systems that ever had it installed.13:58
Eickmeyer[m]Because it's a complete pain.13:58
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: I am thnking to add a dialog if those files are found saying <file> found this may cause sound not to work (remove it?)14:01
OvenWerksor something like that.14:01
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: Might be the best solution. I'm tired of seeing these people come in with broken installations because someone told them to install Cadence.14:01
MauroGaspari[m]The problem if I recall correctly, is that once the "damage" is done, it is really hard to clean the system.14:02
Eickmeyer[m]^ Exactly, Mauro Gaspari .14:02
MauroGaspari[m]I remember people saying in support that only after they wiped and reinstalled, the issue was fixed. So I took a note and remind people to do so if they get stuck. not ideal but I never managed to figure out how to clean without wiping.14:03
Eickmeyer[m]Even the person who wrote Cadence doesn't recommend installing it anymore.14:03
MauroGaspari[m]oh wow! now that's something14:03
OvenWerksMauroGaspari[m]: I don't know about "really hard" but not obvious for sure. I would like not to kill other people's files... I don't know for sure cadence made them.14:03
OvenWerksHowever, we already get rid of the jack config file because qjackctl :P14:04
Eickmeyer[m]Something like, "Files have been encountered that conflict with Studio Controls's operation, and correct system audio. Would you like to remove them?"14:05
MauroGaspari[m]yeah it would be extremely cool if there was a studio-checker tool to run and at least report what people have done that shouldn't. would at least speed up support. But I guess it might be too much to factor in all the PPAs or debian repos or combinations of jack1 vs jack2 etc 14:05
OvenWerksjack1 will not work with studio-controls14:06
MauroGaspari[m]the usual I see all aroundis mix with kxstudio, I believe14:06
OvenWerksbut it doesn't affect it's operation either14:06
Eickmeyer[m]The biggest problem with KXStudio is Cadence. Other than that, it's a fine repo.14:07
MauroGaspari[m]ask ubuntu to alias cadence to carla hahah who could possibly complain? LOL just kidding14:07
Eickmeyer[m]There's a way to go nuclear on that (making a dummy cadence package with an epoch of 99), but the Archive Admins would never allow it.14:09
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: I think I should look for cadence' own config file (which it also leaves behind) then if a pulse config is there or a .asound a dialog saying "cadence has been installed here before, extra config files remain <list of file> remove them?" with two buttons [remove cadence files] and [exit]14:11
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: I'm good with that.14:12
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: the explantion could even be longer14:12
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: It could, but we don't wanna get too wordy: dialog fatigue.14:12
OvenWerksI will probably have to do a fresh iso install, install cadence, run it and see what files it creates.14:16
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: A VM would probably be just fine for that if you don't have something you can blow away.14:17
OvenWerksI think I may be able to leave ~/.asoundrc14:17
* OvenWerks would have to learn to use VMs ;)14:17
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: What? You've never used VirtualBox?14:18
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: have you had time to continue debugging convert-?14:19
OvenWerkslast I tried with your file it seemed to do the right thing14:19
MauroGaspari[m]> * <@OvenWerks:libera.chat> would have to learn to use VMs ;)14:19
MauroGaspari[m]in this case, if you need to mess with your own machine, clonezilla is your best friend. :)14:19
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: I have not, do you have a new tag?14:20
OvenWerksno, because I con't get your file to misbehave14:20
Eickmeyer[m]Interesting. I'll give it a shot later today.14:20
OvenWerks*can't14:20
OvenWerksI need a paste of old file  and converted file to start14:21
Eickmeyer[m]OK. I'll give you a paste of my current file in -devel.14:23
OvenWerksI think in the long run I will change the convert file from a simple convert to check each node for existance and sanity and correct if possible.14:26
mamascookinHeya new user here. I'm trying to setup a couple gates in Carla to shut off some line noise. 16:24
mamascookinI have a 1/8" stereo out going in to another PC. Everything seems to work fine signal flow wise. There is some noise I would like to gate out and the plugin does not seem to work.16:25
mamascookinHere's some screens of Carla and Jack Graph..16:25
Eickmeyer[m]mamascookin: The LSP Gates work for me. You have to adjust the gate to the specific Db level of the gate.16:26
mamascookinhttps://ibb.co/GHmbzrq16:26
mamascookinhttps://ibb.co/F7QKRDTyY16:26
mamascookinyeah I have tried cranking the threshold16:26
Eickmeyer[m]The gate plugin by itself, by default, doen't do a good job. Try tweaking with the settings.16:26
mamascookinto no avail16:26
Eickmeyer[m]Make sure it's not bypassed.16:26
Eickmeyer[m]Your second link is a 404. Also, go into the patchbay in Carla and make sure the gate plugin is actually connected.16:27
mamascookinhttps://ibb.co/F7QKRDT16:27
mamascookinsorry about that16:27
mamascookinI think it is connected I get sound etc on the second PC16:28
Eickmeyer[m]Looks like you're using two mono plugins for a stereo signal? Why?16:28
mamascookinjust where I am at now I can;t get any of them to work16:28
mamascookintried several16:29
mamascookinnot sure how to tell if they are bypassed that may be it16:29
Eickmeyer[m]Well, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe ask in #opensourcemusicians or #lau (Linux Audio Users). I have to go grocery shopping.16:29
mamascookinty!16:30
