[07:35] Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then Enter should be shutdown [07:36] without you have the menu option with a 60 sec timer, i assume you have no display then? [12:29] uerr.. freenode is filing with trolls and chaos [12:29] https://ubuntu-mate.org/irc/ still points to wrong network, there was a git change waiting to go through [12:29] though i'd warn you again as #freenode failing to deal with #ubuntu drug talk etc etc chaos ensuing [12:45] The whole situation with Freenode is a mess tbh. Hopefully once the dust settles libera.chat will be the community's new home :) [12:47] Also if any devs are reading, thank you for making Ubuntu MATE happen. As someone who felt a bit lost when the Unity vs GNOME Shell thing started, I'm kicking myself that I didn't try this distro earlier [12:56] TrechNex: yes I liked gnome2, then saw MATE useful, LinuxMint MATE is popular... [12:57] TrechNex: interestingly, these days, XFCE does well and Cinnamon can be set to have traditional MATE-style task-bars etc. [12:57] makes me quesition what niche MATE good for specifically [13:02] tbh the alternative for me is running GNOME in "classic" mode, which I do on my paid work machine. But I am given to wonder how long that will be maintained for :D [13:07] enyc I think there is value in not having to configure things yourself, and it being set up the way you like it "out of the box". [13:08] I did find the software boutique a bit hit or miss though. It'd be good to see that install applications as snaps instead of trying to set up third party repos [13:09] software boutique is now a snap. TBH if you want snaps just use snapcraft or whatever. [13:09] Fair. I install things on the command line anyway :D - I'm also using 20.04 LTS, so may be slightly behind [13:10] I don't want snaps so the less of them the better. [16:24] TrechNex: that makes sense.... [16:25] * enyc mutters about https://ubuntu-mate.org/irc/ given all the freenode-trolling today -- change been put in but not processed yet ;-( [19:05] enyc: really... who still cares about what's happening on bloody freenode? Let go and move on.... [19:06] Mekaneck: maybe so but the page is not moved on [19:06] there is a change submitted in fgitu or wahtever but not gone through [19:07] have some more patience or get involved to help editing websites [19:08] nagging about it all the time doesn't get you anywhere nor does it improve things. The time you spend writing here you could help out elsewhere, imho... [21:28] I have the weirdest issues with my "trash" on ubuntu mate when I have NFS mounts mounted. If I delete files one one Ubuntu MATE computer they end up shown in the Trash bin on my old Ubuntu 10.04 gnome2. I can't do anything with them when they get there, like restore. And they aren't "really" there, I can't pull them out, but they get listed and I have to 'empty' the second machines trash to get rid of them. [21:28] That is, I delete something on a HDD in machine one (ubuntu mate) and they end up in the trash on machine two (ubuntu 10.04 gnome2). [21:29] .Trash-1000 exists in the root of all the HDD on machine 1 and has all file permissions set right. [21:29] It's gotta be some weird NFS thing. [22:21] Mekaneck: oh i've redirected a lot of people lately and in need of a permission to update some wiki pages now requested =) [22:22] superkuh: wow I remember having 10.04 gnome2 for some time it was a nice time in system ... but not supported any more tbh [22:24] Yep. I still use it on one computer because lots of software can't be feasibly run on newer systems. And the software that can has become worse (like gtk3 removing features). [22:31] superkuh: why not make that into a chroot on other systems? [22:31] so the particular programs can run in the chroot with same homedir bind mounted into chroot [22:32] superkuh: btw -- what software has this incompatibility ? [22:32] Or, I can just keep things working bare metal and build new computers with modern OSes (what I do). [22:32] gtk1/2 stuff, gnu radio builds, things that use features of older glibc, etc, etc. Most of my software isn't from repos but bits of code I found online and compiled over the years. [22:33] I do build new machines and attempt to run old software and most of the time it, or my competence, is not up to the task of forwards porting. [22:33] Let's just say it's a matter of taste. [22:34] Some day I'm gonna figure out this weird trash sharing though.
