Guest4219on this pc yes, i thought i did a few years ago, but something remained that is now causing acronis to think it's time to try fix something that isn't broken00:00
Guest4219the disk that ubuntu was on has been removed long ago, it was a samsung ssd, and i had windows on a samsung nvme disk, and grub as loader00:01
Guest4219when ubuntu is installed, on uefi system, does it insert anything into my efi firmware?00:01
Guest4219i can't wrap my head around why i would be dropped to grub> command line now, two or three years later00:02
Guest4219i only uncovered this because i was having issues (unrelated to this) with windows registry and wanted to restore my system00:03
toddcGuest4219:   assuming uefi system boot to a ubuntu installer -Try ubuntu-gparted-delete UEFI partition leaving it unformated shut down reboot to MS windows intaller and do repair00:03

akiktoddc: no. why do you suggest him to delete the uefi partition?00:05
akikit can be used by windows too00:05

Guest4219no worries about that00:06
Guest4219i want everything be cleaned00:06
Guest4219i have everything in my acronis backup00:06
Guest4219but acronis refuses to work because of what has been left over on the disk from previous installs00:06
toddcakik: yes it can but that may be the reason acronis is complaning00:06
Guest4219exactly my thought as well (or it may be complaining that it can no longer locate grub but does locate grub efi loader)00:07
Guest4219i'm not going anywhere with this... i'm afraid... i will reinstate ubuntu, just so i can get back grub 2 in a good working order00:08
Guest4219then i will use acronis bootable media and hopefully it will be satisfied and let me recover windows disk from backup disk00:09
toddcI have left uefi grub and removed linux in the past but some peoaple just want windows back as it was installed   --I do not have a windows machine nor want one00:09
toddchttps://askubuntu.com/questions/1123089/uninstall-ubuntu-dual-boot00:09
Guest4219(overwriting ubuntu of course in the process)00:10
Guest4219ubuntu or windows, at the end of the day they are all machines, and i'm happy as long as they do what they are supposed to00:11
Guest4219signing off from my ubuntu machine... thank you guys for exchanging ideas with me!00:12
Guest4219i will do some more testing, i know this will work and my backup is not corrupted (even acronis says so when i run the validation test), i just have to overcome the grub hurdle00:13
srvthats why i prefer to have my linux machines in a vm and my windows host intact  happy with my linux vm's as with my hwindows host machine :)00:14
Sven_vBhi! I'm using Ubuntu focal on a LENOVO 81CY/LNVNB161216 with Intel Corporation HD Graphics 500 (rev 0b). VLC seems to decode video on the CPU rather than on the CPU. #videolan says I might be lacking the proper drivers. how can I install them?00:23

Sven_vBthey also said that on Fedora the packages would be libva and libva-intel-driver, but my apt cannot find them00:24
rbasakI don't know anything about it, but Ubuntu Focal has vainfo and libva2 packages that look equivalent to what you're looking for.00:27

Sven_vByeah I'll do that00:27
Sven_vBthat worked, partially. libva2 and libva-x11-2 were installed already. vainfo was installed, and its error output indeed suggests further packages I'll try and install.00:32

user_how can i mount a FAT32 usb stick *not* read only ?03:00
tomreynuser_: the file system is probably marked as unclean (dirty bit set). you will then need to run windows chkdsk or (less preferably) ubuntu's ntfsfix on it.03:03
tomreynuser_: sorry, those were instructions for ntfs, not fat32.03:04
tomreynuser_: the easiest way to mount a fat32 usb stick as writable would be to use udisks2 / gio mount for it. they should mount it as r/w by default.03:06

fang64I'm having a curious problem of getting "Conntection Refused" from ppa.launchpad.net even more weirdly using curl -4 results in the same message. It's almost like I am being blocked, I have tried it at other places and it seems to work...06:16
fang64Does ppa.launchpad.net actively ban IPs? I haven't hammered it (positive of this) so it's a bit confusing to me to be denied...06:18

fang64I have been able to test on a remote machine and use it as a proxy, but I shouldn't have to do that.06:46
toddcI looked at your trace it does hit canonical but 1 sec06:46
fang64I am on a dual stack network IPv4/IPv6 but I've messed around to see if disabiling IPv6 temporarily fixes anything it seems it doesn't matter06:49
toddcfang64: it may be internal canoncal or a return block but I have no idea how to test a blank return06:49
Alabalisticlastly I had problem with resolve.conf and was not able to update my server, Prior I changed my ips from 192.xxx to 10.10.xxx06:50
fang64you would think Connection Refused would be a ban06:50
fang64Alabalistic: My internal network is 10.10.0.0/16 actually06:50
fang64weirdly coincidental I suppose06:51
Alabalisticcat /etc/resolve.conf06:51

fang64it's systemd-resolver06:52
fang64er systemd-resolved*06:52
toddcAlabalistic: normally resolve.conf will only affect finding a name outgoing not return only06:52
fang64yup and when I do a nslookup whether it's resolved or other name servers it's the same ip06:53
fang6491.189.95.83 <-- this address is what returns06:53
fang64at least in IPv4 land, that's why I am thinking it's not liking my current IP06:54
fang64I did try and force my modem to release my current IP, ISP wont give me another one atm06:54
wezfang64: Change your MAC :)06:55
fang64wez: I don't believe I can do that on my modem :306:56
Alabalisticis there some vpn06:56
wezfang64: :(06:57
fang64Alabalistic: No VPN here just raw connection to the internet06:57
fang64admittedly this IP did change this week, maybe I got unlucky and someone hammered Ubuntu PPA address from one of these addresses?06:57
wezfang64: Can you install a custom OS on it like OpenWRT, or whatever its successor is called.06:57
toddcfang64: I would have to assume there is a filtering blacklist where ever there servers are but no idea how to find that06:58
fang64wez: Well as far as the router goes it's running OpenWRT, but I've tried to directly attach to the modem.06:58
fang64getting the same issue :C06:58
Alabalisticgood luck,06:58
fang64I'm suspicious someone used this IP maybe to hammer the ip address? It's just speculation at this point I don't know if opening up a ticket would help :D06:59
Flannelfang64: You could open a ticket with canonical to see if they can't get it sorted out, email rt@ubuntu.com06:59
fang64maybe whenever it changes again it'll start working...06:59
toddcfang64:  see mine shows a good return    https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/XvnmgSBPQf/06:59
fang64ya that seems correct to me07:00
toddcthat is the issue if someone that had your ip did bad things might try to get anothor IP07:01
fang64unfortunately spectrum isn't handing me anything different even if I force it to release it from the modem. I suspect it must be a time thing.07:01
fang64what's weird to me is I am not getting IPv6 connectivity to it07:02
fang64I have a huge block /56 and pretty much free reign07:02
toddcfang64: problem is finding who is blocking and where along the hops it could be a geo block local location block ISP ect07:03
fang64toddc: but I can get to launchpad.net :D07:03
fang64I can't get to the sub-domain07:04
toddcfang64: launchpad is a big place yes normally only a domain is blocked but there is no shortage of mistypes or missed-ideas?07:06
fang64toddc: I didn't explicitly create the PPA entries, I used the add-apt-repository to create them.07:07
fang64They were working up until I'd say Monday of this week, I just decided to chase it now, because the normal repositories were working.07:07
fang64I just thought it was real strange that all the ppa repos were "connection refused"07:07
toddcI have seen automated firewalls block sub domains based on unknown urls in its rules07:08
fang64when I run nslookup I get a resolution though07:08
fang64I have changed the DNS servers a few times just out of curiosity to see if it was some old cached entries in resolved but it's definitely not that07:08
toddcfang64: nslookup should be fine as is DNS those are all outgoing. you have a return issue. and unless you have odd firewall rules it likel out side your network07:11
fang64toddc: ya I don't have anything like that on the local network.07:12
fang64toddc: welp restarted modem, new IP and now it works =.=07:29
toddcfang64: go figure!! as long as it works07:31
fang64So I'm guessing it was banned, hopefully I don't get that IP again I initially was like I am not crazy am I?07:31
toddcfang64: it happens and there is more and more bad players out there so we can assume this will be more common07:33
fang64maybe we need a new mechanism to receive updates, although not sure what the solution is to that...07:37
toddcfang64: let us know if you find a better way to run the internet07:38
fang64toddc: I have antique ideas, I mean this is almost a perfect solution for OpenAFS but that's dying pretty hard these days.07:38
toddcfang64: mail dvd's and stay offline?  I will pass on that07:40
fang64toddc: subscription plans are a thing for food delivery why not for operating system updates :D07:41

ThinkT510mra90: typically you'd use the package manager to install a kernel from a repository10:51
mra90ThinkT510, so now way with bare vmlinux or bZimage ?10:54
ThinkT510why do you want to do it that way?10:54
mra90becaue it allows for easy backup of old kernel10:56
mra90just copy old vmlinux image10:56
mra90and the package way makes it all a lot more complicated10:56
ThinkT510managing kernels manually sounds more complicated to me10:57
ThinkT510you'd have to check yourself whenever you want to update10:58
ThinkT510you'd have to backup yourself manually10:58
ThinkT510if you're just copying and deleting files then what is to stop someone/something else from replacing your file and you end up with a compromised kernel?10:59
ThinkT510if you're adding software that uses kernel modules you'd need to remake the image manually11:00

mra90how to force dpkg to make the kernel I install a default one?!12:20
mra90What happens is I install some kernel version but it is probbaly older than the one I already have so grub boots the newer one instead12:21
cxlHi all, is there a way to tell Ubuntu to not do cached writes to USB keys or memory cards? I find it very inconvenient that the copy dialog shows that it copies at 500MB/s to a slow USB key and then pretends it's done while slowly actually copying the files from the cache to the actual USB key in the background with no indication on the progress (and messing up with the ability to eject the device)12:39
cxland more importantly: is it wise to disable caching?12:41
ogracxl, this is actually the kernel and the mount options, you could try mounting such devices with the sync option (see "man mount") ... to try if that suits you12:51
mra90how to force dpkg to make the kernel I install a default one?!12:51
mra90What happens is I install some kernel version but it is probbaly older than the one I already have so grub boots the newer one instead12:51
TJ-mra90: generally, you interrupt GRUB at boot and choose the older kernel from the GRUB Submenus12:55
TJ-mra90: you can also add an option for grub.cfg to set the specific menuentry you wish to start12:56
mra90TJ-, I now these methods but I need a quick way since I wil need to reflash kernel XX times now12:58
mra90so I want build > copy > instal > reboot12:59
TJ-mra90: use the 2nd method then12:59
mra90well but then after each installation I would manually edit grub12:59
mra90to point to a different kernel image13:00
TJ-mra90: see https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub/html_node/default.html#default13:00
TJ-mra90: you could also replace /etc/grub.d/10_linux (or edit it) to change the way menus are created, or possibly rename /etc/grub.d/41_custom to /etc/grub.d/05_custom and add a /boot/grub/custom.cfg with a static menuentry13:02
TJ-mra90: being 05_ it'd be included BEFORE the usual default entry but not sure if that'd cause problems for what 10_linux generates13:03
mra90TJ-, what I did is removed all kernels13:08
mra90and now each time I install new it will be takes as fresh right13:09

mra90oerheks, yes but if I replace ls with ll this is the same18:03
tomreynmg_: hmm, i guess you may need to check the systemd journal for more details18:03
mra90ll && ll ../../../ shows different things18:04
mg_@tomreyn What am i looking for there and how, except -p 0-7?18:05
tomreynmra90: this doesn't sound right to me, then, so i'm with oerheks there, you should do a file system test. there's also a chance we're misunderstanding what you're saying - more details (actual outputs for those commands, as well as for "pwd" before and after you change directories may help)18:05
tomreynmg_: "swap"18:05
mra90tomreyn, okay let me paste some output18:06
oerhekstomreyn, no, mg_  should do a fsck.18:06
tomreynoerheks: oh i see. it might help in both cases, though.18:07
oerheksll and ls are different, ll shows hidden files.. with a . in front of them18:08
oerheksand the ../../..// have no meaning there18:08
mra90here it is: https://termbin.com/j5ly18:08
mra90as you can see the output of ll is different even though directories are the same18:09
mg_Ok, so what do i do? And in case of looking for swap- how?18:09
tomreyn<tomreyn> mra90: that's to be expected on some file systems, such as sysfs18:09
mra90tomreyn, why?18:10
mra90it doesn't make any sense to me18:10
tomreynmra90: because of how it's designed18:10
mra90you mean the ll or file system?18:11
mra90to me it doesn't make any sense18:11
tomreynmg_: journalctl -b | grep swap18:11
tomreynmra90: cd ..  may behave unexpectedly on sysfs18:12
mra90huh so it goes to some other folder?18:12
mg_@tomreyn https://pastebin.com/cpakUg8B18:12
tomreynmra90: you should use absolute paths on sysfs only, not relative ones18:12

mra90tomreyn, reading.. thanks18:15
webchat40Can I modify the ubiquity source code to add more features for my oem ubuntu18:16
=== mesa is now known as mesaboogie
webchat40I mean I am planning to distribute my modified ubuntu and I wanna add some license information in the installer18:16
EriC^^mra90: maybe it's something to do with symlinks going on, maybe see where it's taking you, or do it in pieces to see what's going on18:16
webchat40Is it possible to do that?18:17
tomreynwebchat40: you can modify ubiquity and create an ubuntu derivative with this. make sure you remove any copyrighted material and anything infringing the trademark.18:18
mra90EriC^^, oh yes you may be right about symlinks, that may be it18:18
oerhekswebchat40, one can do an OEM install http://ubuntuconfig.com/ubuntu-oem-install-using-any-ubuntu-iso-image/18:19

svm_invictvsIf I kill systemd-resolvd I pretyt much lose all DNS right?18:22
mg_@tomreyn Do i also need to do 512 when i have 2Gb file?18:24
tomreynmg_: if you want 2 GB, you do 2G18:24
mg_Kk, thx, ill try that and reboot18:24
mg_If i dont come back it means all worked out and thank you!18:25
tomreynsvm_invictvs: you'd loose that resolver then. if that'S the active one, you'd loose the ability to resolve.18:28
svm_invictvsYeah18:28
svm_invictvstomreyn, I'm writing software that uses SRV lookups and I'm trying to test it. That means I want to run a local DNS server. I can't open port 53 for that reason. I'm trying to figure out how to do this without killing DNS for my whole system.18:29
mg_Nah, still the same18:29
=== jonathan is now known as jhutchins
i-garrisonsvm_invictvs: DNSStubListener=no in /etc/systemd/resolved.conf will turn off stub resolver and free port 53, then you need to have valid nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf which does not point to killed stub resolver18:31
svm_invictvsIf I were to do something like run dnsmasq on port 5353 and then point my systemd-resolvd at 127.0.0.1:5353 would that basically accomplish what I want?18:31
tomreynsvm_invictvs: have a look at resolv.conf(5) and systemd-resolved(8) to get an idea of how the resolver architecture works.18:32
svm_invictvsYeah I'm reading it.18:33
svm_invictvsi-garrison, What's the stub resolver?18:33
tomreynalso systemd-resolved.service(8)18:33
tomreynmg_: what exactly did you do after reading the bug report, to fix the swapfile?18:34
mg_@tomreyn Copypasted the command from comment #7, replaced 512 with 4G18:35
mg_*commands18:35
svm_invictvsi-garrison, Ah yeah, That did it.18:36
svm_invictvsi-garrison, Yeah, thanks. That's all I wanted was to free up localhost:53 for me to test this code. Put it back when I'm done but the last time I tested this thing I was modifying dnsmasq on my router which is a pain in the ass.18:36
tomreynmg_: okay, i would have expected that to fix it. do you still see the same messages on the journal?18:40
tomreynmg_: you did remove the leading    #   characters, right?18:40
mg_@tomreyn Yes and yes18:40
tomreynmg_: and lsattr confirms it's now COW?18:41
