[11:10] Hi all [11:12] I think Canonical need to drop the use of developer names in product names, for example: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa). The product is aimed at end users, not developers. I think it looks unprofessional and overloads the end user. [11:14] It is also unnecessary for the end-user. [11:25] Kolusion: discussion points like this are more appropriate here https://discourse.ubuntu.com/ [11:26] Then what is the point of this channel? [11:26] See the topic [11:27] What? [11:28] Archive: Open | Devel of Ubuntu (not support) | [11:28] I speak English only mate. [11:30] It's a long-standing compromise. At one point we did indeed want/try to show only versions, but people thought it was helpful to have the codename link visible as well because in practice people often use the codenames casually anyway and this helps to remind users of the link. [11:30] See e.g. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2011-November/034370.html and thread [11:34] (That thread was actually sort of the opposite; it started by objecting to a system that was showing codenames *only*; but it illustrates the compromise and is the best I can find at short notice) [11:36] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CodeNamesToVersionNumbers was essentially the original plan. But it turned out that if we excised the codename from everything user-visible then users got a bit too lost any time somebody happened to reference a codename in conversation. [11:43] The problem is then the person the user is talking to, not the user. [11:44] Imagine calling up Microsoft for support with Windows 10 and then technical support person starts referring to Windows by the development codename. It's just stupid. lol [11:46] This is why Linux is a fail. [11:46] You can't see it. [11:47] Unless this changes, Ubuntu will forever stay at 1% [11:48] Developer terms should never EVER be presented to the user. [11:48] The user does not understand it, it just overwhealms and confuses them, and back to Windows they go. [11:49] There is also another problem. [11:50] Go to 'ubuntu.com', toggle 'Products' from the top. Select 'Ubuntu'. The problem is that it takes you to 'https://ubuntu.com/'. It should take you to 'https://ubuntu.com/desktop'. [11:50] A serious, SERIOUS problem. [11:50] People cannot see the webpage for the flagship product! [11:51] What the hell is going on?! [11:53] Another problem... [11:54] (I doubt this is going to be productive. But I'll just note that macOS people seem entirely unbothered by talking about Big Sur.) [11:55] On the product page, follow 'Read the installation instructions'. The page refers to 'Ubuntu desktop' but the product page you just comes to refers to 'Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 LTS'. This is a huge confusion for someone that has never used anything other than Windows. To them, they are hearing two different products when in fact it is the same product [11:55] being referred to using two different names. [11:56] Who cares what they think. [11:56] We are talking about people that want to use Ubuntu. [11:56] That is all that matters. :) [11:57] I can point out 1000+ of these problems if Canonical is willing to pay me. === tumbleweed_ is now known as tumbleweed
