dreamongood night. here its 01:59AM .. Thank you all00:00
Bashing-omdreamon: Do you have a strong interest in how the package manager manages ?00:00
dreamonyes..00:01
mengesbWhere might I go to discuss bandwidth performance with Ubuntu on a RPi vs Raspberry Pi OS - and to get hints as to where the problem may be ?00:03
Bashing-omdreamon: Then: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.en.html#_more_readings_for_the_package_management will relate more than you may want to know :D We be Debian based :)00:03
sarnoldmengesb: depending upon what you're seeing, maybe here, maybe askubuntu, maybe a bug report..00:04
mengesbUbuntu 20.04.2 arm64 seems to perform at about 50-67% of Raspberry Pi OS 2021-05-27 which is 32-bit00:04
mengesbWell I can start here I suppose, then move on to where recommended so that I can supply the right stuff00:05
mengesbStarted off doing tests to ookla (speedtest), noticed peak performance at around 400-600mbps on a 1gbe line, moved to iperf tests, saw similar results from two hosts; changed to Raspberry Pi OS and now seeing line rate speeds at 940Mbit/s (near 1gbe line speed)00:07
mengesbUsing an RPi 4b rev 1.3 8gb00:07
dreamonBashing-om, OK. I will dig there.. ;) bye00:07
mengesbthe speedtest cli tool doesn't use disk I/O to transmit, and iperf doesn't back using disk I/O, so it's not a limit of the SD Card00:08
sarnoldhah, you anticipated my question..00:08
mengesb=)00:08
mengesbBeen poking at Jeff Gerling ; suggested I looked into what Ubuntu's network driver for the broadcom chipset might be00:09
mengesband if there might be an issue there00:09
mengesbThe other observation I had was that ping latency to ookla test servers was 2x that of the RPi OS tests... 10ms on Ubuntu; 5ms on RPi OS00:09
mengesbabout the only other potential difference (other than userlands being similar and the 32vs64 bit diff) is the kernel itself... but both being debian variants I would suspect they're very similar00:10
mengesbHere's some of our exchange: https://github.com/geerlingguy/internet-pi/issues/10500:11
ubottuIssue 105 in geerlingguy/internet-pi "Speed test discrepancy - Pi 3 B+ not getting more than 260 Mbps up" [Open]00:11
mengesbI realize the title of that refers to a RPi 3b+, I've since moved on to a 4b00:12
mengesbExample of one of the best results on Ubuntu to Ookla:00:13
mengesbPing: 10.242 ms00:13
mengesbDownload: 558.92 Mbit/s00:13
mengesbUpload: 488.00 Mbit/s00:13
mengesbhttps://www.speedtest.net/result/c/2f7ac3ee-9feb-4243-99c0-e3623e2a49b4 is immediately after i changed to RPi OS00:14
mengesb    Latency:     4.59 ms   (0.13 ms jitter)00:14
mengesb   Download:   928.06 Mbps (data used: 741.1 MB)00:14
mengesb     Upload:   803.41 Mbps (data used: 1.4 GB)00:14
mengesbPacket Loss:     0.0%00:14
mengesb Result URL: https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/2f7ac3ee-9feb-4243-99c0-e3623e2a49b400:14
mengesbbasically, half the latency, twice the performance00:15
mengesbto be fair, I haven't tried or looked to see if there was an ARM 32-bit Ubuntu version00:15
mengesbUbuntu was imaged using: ubuntu-20.04.2-preinstalled-server-arm64+raspi.img.xz00:17
sarnoldmengesb: so, I've got a few wild guesses.. (a) try booting with kernel command line mitigations=off, maybe there's a processor flaw mitigation that ubuntu has enabled that rpios doesn't have enabled.. (I haven't got a clue if these arm procs even have anything..)00:17
mengesbhrm; k... let me snag another RPi and I'll give this a shot... (yes, embarassingly, I have SEVERAL)00:18
sarnoldmengesb: (b) maybe check the flow control algorithms in use, grep -i tcp /boot/config-*  -- my rpi3b+ has: CONFIG_DEFAULT_TCP_CONG="cubic"00:18
sarnoldthat's awesome though, it makes it easy to make sure your results make sense to test the same thing on several different pieces of hardware, etc00:19
mengesbsarnold: There's no `tcp` settings in the RPi OS installation. Imaging Ubuntu right now00:32
sarnoldmengesb: do they keep the kernel configs for the running kernel in /proc/config.gz perhaps?00:33
sarnold(on such a low-memory machine it would be very surprising..)00:33
mengesbno; the only `c` in `/proc` are `cgroups   cmdline   consoles  cpu/      cpuinfo   crypto`00:33
mengesb`/boot/config.txt` is generally where00:34
sarnoldI don't think it's even possible to build the kernel without tcp.. maybe that's just an urban legend.. but clearly you've got it, so it's got to be there :)00:34
sarnoldthe kernel config is different from the rpi config00:34
sarnoldmaybe check the files owned by their kernel packages? maybe they store the config somewhere else00:35

mengesbthose are my only modifications00:36

mengesbLooks like Ubuntu 20.04.2 needs a ca certificates update ... cloud init failures due to SSL certs00:52

bancrofti'm on ubuntu 18, trying to compile something using the ghostscript library. I'm trying to use -lcups but I keep getting cupsRasterWritePixels is undefined and other linker problems (same with X11). I got the source using apt-get source ghostscript and I got the deps using apt-get build-dep ghostscript so I don't know why i'm not getting the right versions?02:15
Guest63Hi y'all. I'm back from earlier (the guy who's trying to rescue some files). I found some discrepancy between df -h /home/$USER and the output of gddrescue. Is it because I used --sparse with ddrescue?03:15
Guest63If I run ls -lah from /home/$USER it says my sbd1.img from ddrescue is 466G, however, when I run df -h /home/$USER it returns "/dev/sda6 441G 187G 231G 45% /home"03:17
Guest63How is it possible for a 466G file to be in /home when /home is 441G?03:17
Guest63Or even worse, how come /home is only 45% used? lol03:17
Guest63Once again, is it because of the sparse file deal? How do I know its true size?03:18
Guest63I'll have to run but I'll check the logs in case anyone answers03:25

b0nnThe installer has partitioned the drive such that I have a 512MB fat32 efi partition, and a 476.66 ext4 partition06:16
b0nnhrm, I get two errors, depending on how the installer is launched06:16
b0nnone is ubi-partman failed with exit code 1006:17
b0nnI don't have the other one to hand06:17
BoomCPUwell #ubuntu is toooooo technical and cmd for me bye06:17
Croranb0nn: apparently the ubi-partman thing has been solved by some people by doing a manual partition06:20

Croranb0nn: also, maybe give LTS a shot.06:30
Croranand if you remember the second error, that could be relevant too.06:30
b0nnThe installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk.06:32
b0nnThen Installer crash06:32

b0nnThen boot to "Try Ubuntu"06:32

mortI don't understand why Ubuntu Software registers itself as the default application for debs but then just says "Failed to install file: File not supported" if you open a deb in it06:46
mortkind of makes Ubuntu just seem like a broken system, no?06:47
pikapikaCan you escape to a shell during an ubuntu or xubuntu installation? How do you do that?07:10
pikapikafor example if you prefer setting up file systems using your preferred tools instead the gui etc07:11
cbreakswitch to a different TTY, by finding the right combination of alt, ctrl, shift and F2?07:11
cbreak(which I always forget)07:11
pikapikacbreak, is it a "supported" method or is it hacky07:11
pikapikaI think its ctrl+alt+fn for me07:12
cbreakquite hacky.07:12
pikapikacbreak, then how about the ubuntu server edition07:12
pikapikadoes it provide an escape to shell07:12
cbreakbut if you want to set up your own FS, just start in live-usb mode07:12
cbreakprepare the target in there07:12
pikapikayeah that was just an example07:12
cbreakthen install without formating07:12
pikapikafor an fs really I could just prepare it beforehand07:12
pikapikausing any live usb07:12
pikapikaubuntu or not07:12
pikapikaBut like07:12
pikapikain case I want to drop to shell for any reason during the setup07:13
pikapikaesp with regard to errors07:13
cbreakswitching to an other tty should work.07:13
pikapikaI see07:13
pikapikaAnd what about ubuntu server07:13
pikapikadoes it allow you to drop to shell during the setup07:13
pikapikaI might install a desktop via the server image if it works07:13
cbreakit should work there too.07:13
b0nnguiverc: I had considered that, but thought that being able to boot from that image to install meant that any defects could be detected and new software downloaded07:13
pikapikaIts mainly for the purposes of having a proper "debugging environment" in case of any errors, cbreak07:14
b0nnSo, I left the installer running before I went out, and it's still running (about 40 minutes) with the shell attached saying that the last message was "NetworkManager-dispatcher.service: Succedded.07:16
b0nnHow much longer should I leave it running?07:16
pikapikacbreak, what are the reasons you had to do this?07:16
pikapikaif I may ask07:17
b0nnoh, cron just sent a message run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly07:18
alkisgb0nn: can you do a summary? You're trying to install, and you got disk write errors, and you leave it in case it finishes?07:18
b0nnSo, I'07:19
pikapikaIt seems the server installer actually provides an official means to go to a shell any time needed: https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/install/general07:19
b0nnI've been trying to install ubuntu onto an XPS-15 (9500) - when I reboot the bios cannot see the disk, and a beep occurs, but not able to boot into Ubuntu07:19
alkisgMaybe you're installing in BIOS mode, and it requires UEFI?07:20
b0nnSo I am trying to figure out what the problem is, the install, the computer, the settings07:20
alkisgCurrently are you booted via live CD?07:20
b0nnyes07:20
alkisgls /sys/firmware/efi/07:21
alkisgconfig_table  efivars  fw_platform_size  fw_vendor  runtime  runtime-map  systab  vars07:21
alkisgIf you run that ls command, do you see these files there?07:21
alkisgThat would mean you're in UEFI mode07:21
b0nnyes, all those files/dirs are there07:22
alkisgCan you also pastebin the disk layout? sudo parted -l | nc termbin.com 999907:22
b0nnhttps://termbin.com/j8knc07:23
alkisgWhen you're rebooting, you remove the SD card, right?07:24
b0nnyes07:24
pikapikaWhere does the installer keep logs?07:25
pikapikaIs the 'debootstrap' method still supported?07:25
alkisgb0nn:  Well things look good. So when the PC boots, what does it show, just a black screen and a beep sound? Do you see anything related to grub or ubuntu at all?07:25
alkisgpikapika: sure debootstrap still works07:25
b0nnI'll reboot for an accurate answer07:25
cbreakpikapika: do what? switch to an other tty?07:26
cbreakjust looking at what it's doing07:26
alkisgb0nn: if at all possible, get a video with your phone, it may help07:26
b0nnPlease remove the install media.. done07:26
alkisgb0nn: that's the message you see when you try to boot the installed ubuntu?!07:27
alkisgI think it's just the live cd shutdown message07:27
pikapikacbreak, I see07:27
alkisgRemove the sd card and reboot to see the boot message07:27
pikapikaMy main reasons really are from fear what to do when installation faces some problems07:27
b0nnno vide; so, Dell splash, beep, reboot, splash, beep, bios "No bootable devices found"07:27
pikapikab0nn, is it a hard disk or ssd07:28
alkisgCan you select the UEFI boot manager with F12 or a similar key?07:28
cbreakefi or legacy bios?07:28
b0nnssd I think07:28
b0nnIN BIOS, NO uefi bOOT dEVICES LISTED07:29
alkisgb0nn: then maybe you need an UEFI firmware upgrade to boot from your NVME disk? Did you check for BIOS updates?07:30
alkisgDid you have an OS in that disk in the past?07:30
b0nnI did, but it got wiped a few hours ago07:31
alkisgOK so maybe the problem is that the installation wasn't finished successfully and grub was not installed07:32
alkisgDid you see any error messages while installing?07:32
b0nnhmm, yes I have already posted them in the channel07:32
alkisgYeah I haven't read all the history, that's why I asked if you could give a summary. So if the installation wasn't successful, that would be the thing to fix07:33
alkisgI.e. reinstall, and do it successfully, instead of trying to revive a possibly broken installation07:33
b0nnSeveral (about 6) attempts at installation07:34
alkisgAnd what was the error message?07:34
b0nn16:32 < b0nn> The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk.07:34
alkisgAt that point, type `dmesg` to see which device it's talking about07:35
alkisgIf it's your internal ssd/nvme disk, then you need to replace it07:35
alkisgIf it's the SD card, then you need to replace that one07:35
b0nn\16:17 < b0nn> one is ubi-partman failed with exit code 1007:35
alkisgThe input/output error is the important one07:36
b0nnyeah I think it's my SD Card07:36
alkisgIt means that either the SD card or your disk are worn out and need to be replaced07:36
alkisgRun dmesg to see which one it is07:36
b0nnBut I cannot figure out if it's corrupted or not07:36
alkisgRun dmesg to figure it out07:36
b0nnhttps://termbin.com/5pxf07:39
alkisgAfter you see the input/output error message, not right after reboot07:40
b0nnlol07:40
b0nnthe io error happens when I rune the first installer so I willl need to reboot again07:41
alkisgReboot, go to "try ubuntu"07:41
alkisgThis will allow you to install AND have a terminal07:41
alkisgWhen the installer fails, run dmesg in the terminal07:41
b0nnOh, I was /in/the "Try ubuntu"07:42
alkisgOK, run the installer from there, from "try ubuntu"07:44
alkisgBtw, when the live cd boots (or the sd card), it's supposed to do a disk check, so if it passes that one, then most probably the SSD disk is to blame07:45
b0nnnew error07:45
b0nnNo EFI System Partition was found07:46
b0nnclicking go back takes me to gparted07:46
b0nnwhich shows /dev/nvme0n1p1 fat32 /boot/efi07:47
alkisgBy "gparted" you mean the installer?07:47
alkisggparted is a separate program that you would run manually from the menu07:48
b0nnWhich device should I select for boot loader installation07:48
b0nnyes, gparted is what I have been dropped into07:48
alkisgYour nvme disk, /dev/nvme0n107:48

acresearchpeople, i am trying to install dssp v 3.0   apt install dssp (seems only v 4.0 available)  but v 4.0 is a broken package, has a bug since 2020 rendering unusable (from their git issues),,, how can i find v 3.0 and install it (i know that it works)?   i am on ubuntu 2109:16

m1dnightHi all. I recently bought a bluetooth keyboard (keychron k6) and a bluetooth dongle (sabrent bt4). When my pc goes to sleep it takes about 30-40 seconds before the bluetooth dongle/process is activated, and I can type my password.10:01
acresearchpeople, i am trying to instal dssp of an older version from apt, how can i find an older version? it seems only the latest is provided, is there way to find it and install it?10:04
quadratacresearch you can't as hirsute only has 4.010:06
quadratyou would need to find a different source10:06
MaxiiHi, I recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 on an Ideapad Y700 I5-ISK, and it is making the fan run constantly at full speed. I have tried installing tlp, which did nothing, then I ran fwts fan and got: Test fan status. 25 failed /n Load system, check CPU fan status. 30 failed. Does anyone know a way to fix this?10:07
acresearchquadrat: what other sources should i look into?10:08
quadratacresearch i'm not sure, as everything below hirsute has 3.0, but i wouldn't recommend installing it from the older releases10:10
acresearchquadrat: i am sorry, what do you mean? hirsute?  is it a repo like apt?10:10
acresearchquadrat: i am looking for dssp version 3.0 by the way10:11
quadratMaxii did you check that the uefi/bios/firmware is on the newest release. as lenovo doesn't support linux on non-thinkpads, you would need to check that at least everything is as new as possible10:11
quadrathirsute is the release name for 21.04 (which you probably have installed)10:11
quadratacresearch ^10:11
Maxiiquadrat yes, my bios is up to date, i updated it a week ago10:12
quadratMaxii did you check with fancontrol?10:13
MaxiiHow do I do that?10:13
acresearchquadrat: hirsute: command not found10:13
quadratacresearch as I said, hirsute is just another name for Ubuntu 21.0410:14
acresearchquadrat: ah10:14
quadratMaxii the program is in the repos, so you would need to install it to check if you _can_ control the fan with it10:14
acresearchquadrat: i am sorry, then where is version 3.0 of dssp? i am confused, i canno find it in apt10:14
Maxiiquadrat ok, i will try that, but i recently had 18.04 running on this laptop without such fan issues and Windows 10 dual booted doesn't seem to have a problem with the fans10:16
quadratMaxii so it sounds like it's a bug, did you check if maybe a different kernel helps?10:17
quadratacresearch it seems it's not that easy to fetch 3.0 as the homepage for 3.0 is not online anymore10:17
MaxiiI tried fancontrol, it says "Error: Can't read configuration file /etc/fancontrol10:18
Maxiii'm not sure how i can check a different kernel version10:19
quadratMaxii when booting, you can press esc at the ubuntu screen when it first shows up, that should show you a table of different boot options, there should be one called advanced options [...] entering that should give you more kernel options when you have others installed (when you had ubuntu installed for a while, there should be 2-3)10:20
quadratMaxii for fancontrol, you can use pwmconfig to generate a config, (it will test if it can control the fan (tries to turn it off for 5 sec))10:21
MaxiiOk so, i have 5.8.0-59 and 5.8.0-43 (i haven't had this for a while, installed this to laptop 2 days ago), I guess it's usually loading 5.8.0.59 so I'll try with 5.8.0-4310:23
quadratyes correct assumption, hope it works Maxii10:24
MaxiiOk, using 5.8.0-43 didn't do anything, and I tried fancontrol pwmconfig and it still just says "Can't read configuration file"10:28
MaxiiDo I need to use it with sudo?10:28
GoldenEyeAfter several decades, at last I use IRC again. Hello Ubuntu! Hello Gnome!10:29
quadratMaxii yes10:33
quadrathey GoldenEye, welcome to the dark side :)10:33
Maxiiquadrat it says there are no pwn-capable sensor modules installed10:35
quadratMaxii okay thought that it maybe could get it running :/10:36
quadratMaxii sorry then I am out of ideas10:37
Maxiiits ok, thanks for trying10:38
quadratMaxii you could still look maybe in the journal to see if we can find something. but pretty sure there shouldn't be too much, as fans are operated normally by the uefi/bios/firmware10:39
b0nnso, I got ubuntu installed (I went and bought a new USB stick)10:46
b0nnBut I'm still having problems - the install works, then boots straight after removing the install media, but then it wont reboot ever again10:47
b0nnjust a flashing cursor top left of the screen10:47
Maxiiquadrat i just tried booting to the usb which i used to isntall 20.04, and it doesnt have the fans running at full speed10:48
quadratMaxii huh interesting. now we have to figure out what's going wrong, so maybe the journal does spit something out about the fan10:49
Maxiiwhat is this journal, i don't know?10:49
quadratjournal = log10:50

Slartiba1tGuys. I have a laptop with 1 HDMI out and 1 mini-DP out. Before I had 2 monitors with HDMI in, so one of them was connected converting mini-DP -> HDMI. Worked just fine. Now I've got another monitor with mini-DP in, so I'm trying to connect 1 monitor using HDMI and 2 monitors using a DP hub. It works just fine on the dualboot Windows 10, but Ubuntu 20.10 freezes during startup, presumably just before11:28
Slartiba1tshowing the login screen. If I remove the DP hub, running only the HDMI monitor, then Ubuntu boots. But the hub makes it freeze, regardless of whether any monitors are connected to it or not. Anyone experienced this? Should I submit a bug report somewhere?11:28
theMajorSlartiba1t: how is the DP hub connected?11:38
Slartiba1ttheMajor: The hub has one mini-DP contact and 4 DP ports in the "other end". So it's connected to the laptop using the mini-DP.11:41
theMajorSlartiba1t: did you check in system settings display if the monitors are available and enabled also what happens if youn connect the hub when already logged in to they show up then.11:42

Guest14Hi y'all. I'm back from earlier (the guy who's trying to rescue some files). I found some discrepancy between df -h /home/$USER and the output of gddrescue. Is it because I used --sparse with ddrescue?11:54
Guest14If I run ls -lah from /home/$USER it says my sbd1.img from ddrescue is 466G, however, when I run df -h /home/$USER it returns "/dev/sda6 441G 187G 231G 45% /home"11:54
Guest14How is it possible for a 466G file to be in /home when /home is 441G?11:54
Guest14Or even worse, how come /home is only 45% used? lol11:54
Guest14Once again, is it because of the sparse file deal? How do I know its true size?11:54
theMajorSlartiba1t: maybe needles to ask but you are using an external power adapter for this hub11:57
theMajorSlartiba1t: also what resolution are you running?11:58
theMajorSlartiba1t: have you already checked your logs, if the system freezes it should log something about this. if you check your log you can see if it is driver related are hub related12:05
Slartiba1ttheMajor: Yes, the hub uses a separate power adapter. The resolution on both screens are 1920x1080. Haven't checked logs, no. Any log in particular that I should check?12:08
theMajorSlartiba1t: check dmesg in /var/log/12:13

freeman_hHi guys, I created a new .ssh key using ssh-gen. In my ubuntu 20 linux server. This created 2 new files called rob_moore and rob_moore.pub. After I added the public key using rob_moore fxcanli.pub >> authorized_keys I ran cat rob_moore I then copy the ssh key to my local machine. However when I try to ssh using the new key i get invalid format14:51
ioriadell close the terminal and reopen14:51
freeman_hquestion is why?14:51
freeman_hwhen i use puttygen putty can understand it no issue14:52
goddardwhy not ssh-copy-id?14:52
goddardputty is old and krusty14:53
goddarddo it the linux way not the windows way14:53
freeman_hgoddard, ssh-copy-id will will that copy from the ubuntu server to my windows pc?14:54

goddardleftyfb cool, not really geared towards home users though i imagine15:04
goddardstill 150 and you get support15:05
goddardthats cool15:05
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, so you're trying to copy a public ssh key you created on ubuntu 20.04 using openssh's "ssh-keygen" utility to a Windows machine so you can ssh to the Windows machine from Ubuntu?15:05
alirezaHi everyone.15:05
leftyfbalireza: hello, is there an ubuntu support issue we can help you with?15:06
oerhekshttps://ubuntu.com/server/docs/service-openssh pretty good manual15:06
leftyfboerheks: I think the issue is with Windows/git bash and not with ubuntu or the key15:06
leftyfbalso, I think there's a misunderstanding and the keys were created with putty15:07
leftyfbor that when they used puttygen it worked15:07
oerheksah, i read back, he generated keys15:07
matsamanI found git bash to be pretty obnoxiously Windowsy, and cygwin shell stuff to be less so15:08
freeman_hleftyfb, no15:08
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, please explain in detail then15:09
freeman_hssh key is created on ubuntu server, i then copy the key to windows and then try to ssh using the new key it does not work15:09
oerheksafter copying keys, restart ssh service?15:09
leftyfb:/15:09
oerheks(windows)15:09
freeman_hthe default ssh key i created works find15:09
freeman_hfind*15:09
freeman_hfine*15:09
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, so then exactly the situation I described above then15:09
freeman_hhttps://www.digitalocean.com/ this is where the ubuntu server is at15:10
freeman_hleftyfb, no you said this "so you can ssh to the Windows machine from Ubuntu"15:10
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, so how are you trying to ssh to the Windows machine then?15:10
freeman_hI am not trying to ssh to windows from ubuntu. I am trying to ssh from windows TO ubuntu15:11
freeman_hleftyfb, using git bash15:11
goddardthats what i assume15:11
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, then the public key goes on Ubuntu in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Make sure to chmod 0600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys15:11
leftyfbfreeman_h: at this point, I would recommend a test using the private key still on the ubuntu server to ssh back to itself:   ssh -i ~/path/to/rob_moore localhost15:12
freeman_hI have an ssh key already which i am using and that works fine. the ssh key was added when i usin digital ocean to create the ubuntu server. However I am trying to create another ssh key for my laptop which is the issue15:12
goddardssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/PUBLIC_KEY.pub -o PreferredAuthentications=password -o PubkeyAuthentication=no -o "IdentityFile ~/.ssh/PRIVATE_KEY" USER_NAME@IP_OR_URL15:12
goddardlogin with password to copy it over15:13
goddardthen turn password login off15:13
goddardthats one way15:13
leftyfbgoddard: you are assuming a linux client, they are using Windows15:13
leftyfbfreeman_h: test on ubuntu ssh'ing to ubuntu first15:13
leftyfbfreeman_h: that is the only thing we can support here. We cannot support git bash15:13
goddardwell this is a Linux support channel15:14
goddard:D15:14
leftyfbfreeman_h: please test as I mentioned above15:14
freeman_hleftyfb, so generate the key locally and then copy it to the server15:15
freeman_hthe username and password lol i have to wait 4 weeks for that because our dev team leader is off sick with covid15:15

leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, so now it seems we have another ubuntu machine in the mix. You have a Windows machine that you want to use git bash as an ssh client(don't) and an ubuntu workstation running Ubuntu ? and a server hosted at DI running Ubuntu ?15:17
freeman_halso we have a new guy starting on monday so lol guess no work for him for 4 weeks15:17
leftyfbfreeman_h: please focus on the problem at hand15:17
leftyfbfreeman_h: please verify the environment we're working with here and the exact use case in detail15:18
freeman_hleftyfb, in my work place we use windows pc has we are php and python developers here15:18
freeman_hthe linux ubuntu server we use digital ocean to create a ubuntu cloud server15:18
freeman_hmy work pc can ssh into the server using git bash WITHOUT any issue15:19
freeman_hthe problem is how do i add a new ssh key for other people to use on the ubuntu server15:19
freeman_hgit bash is not the issue. windows is not the issue15:19
leftyfbfreeman_h: "linux ubuntu server" running what version of ubuntu?   "my work pc" running what? Windows?   Is there a 2nd machine running ubuntu?15:19
alkisgWindows 10 comes with preinstalled ssh, no need for git bash at all15:19
freeman_h20.0415:20
goddardalkisg he is just using that to manage his project15:20
freeman_halkisg, i use git bash has i use git. good thing about git bash is that i can use linux commands on windows and it works fine :)15:20
freeman_hgoddard, +115:20
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, so you have a machine running Windows that you want to use git bash as an ssh client to ssh to an Ubuntu server hosted at DI running Ubuntu 20.04. Correct?15:20
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, please test, the keypair you created on the Ubuntu 20.04 server hosted at DI to ssh using the private key back to the same server using the command I posted above15:21
freeman_hleftyfb, yes using a NEW ssh key which I have generated on the ubuntu 20.04 server15:22
freeman_hleftyfb, okay I will try that now15:22
leftyfbfreeman_h: also, compare the appended public key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the ubuntu 20.04 server hosted at DI with the contents of the rob_moore.pub you created on the same machine15:23
freeman_hleftyfb, that works15:24
freeman_hon the server i can ssh to itself using the new ssh key15:24
freeman_hso the issue is not the key or authorised_keys file15:25
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, so at this point, both the ssh public key, private key and ssh service running on the server are all setup correctly and functional. You issue is 100% how you are utilizing the private ssh and/or git bash on Windows. You'll need to see support from wherever you can get support with git bash or Windows15:25
leftyfbfreeman_h: good luck15:26
freeman_hleftyfb, when i run cat rob_moore15:26
leftyfbfreeman_h: another alternative would be to use Ubuntu for Windows (WSL2)15:26
freeman_hand then copy the key from ubuntu to windows. something messes up the format15:26
freeman_his they a command for linux to reformat ssh key?15:27
leftyfbfreeman_h: that would probably be the notepad you might be using on Windows that adds carriage returns15:27
leftyfbfreeman_h: the format issue is not on the Ubuntu side. "cat" is as raw as it gets15:27
Slartiba1tGuys? I'm trying to connect a Displayport hub to an Ubuntu 20.10 laptop. However, it freezes each time. The timestamps in dmesg are tricky to map to a point in time, but I think it shows "kernel: ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._DSM: Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package] (20200528/nsarguments-59)" when things freeze. Syslog has 3 lines: "BUG: kernel NULL pointer15:27
Slartiba1tdereference, address: 0000000000000000", "#PF: supervisor write access in kernel mode" and "#PF: error_code(0x0002) - not-present page". (Are they caused by connecting the DP hub?) What should be my next step here?15:27
leftyfbfreeman_h: if you are using notepad, that is the issue. Use wordpad instead15:28
leftyfbfreeman_h: also also, Windows has an ssh client now. No need to use git bash just for an ssh client15:29
=== Guest6531 is now known as noteness
freeman_hleftyfb, same error Load key ".\\id_rsa": invalid format15:34
leftyfbfreeman_h: ok, so if Windows is having an issue with the format of the paste, then I recommend transferring the file, not copy/paste. Maybe use an sftp client to copy the private key from Ubuntu to Windows15:36
freeman_hgoing to install filezilla and copy the fiel directly and see what happens15:36
leftyfbfreeman_h: winscp15:36
=== zakame is now known as zachy
=== zachy is now known as zakame
alkisgOr plain scp, it's included in win10 :)15:40
alkisgOr md5sum file, to compare it without transferring15:40
alkisg(that's included in windows git bash)15:41
freeman_hleftyfb, with winscp how do i see the .ssh directory?15:43
leftyfbfreeman_h: you'll have to read the documentation for it or use google. I don't use Windows so I can't help with that15:44
leftyfbfreeman_h: in the meantime, you could(SHOULD) move the private key out of that directory on that server anyway15:44
leftyfbfreeman_h: in fact, once you get this all working, the private key should be removed from the server completely15:45
freeman_hleftyfb, works15:46
freeman_hso they some some messed up thing about copying it15:46
freeman_husing that winscp thing, i download the file and it works15:46
leftyfbfreeman_h: that would be a copy/paste issue with Windows and/or whatever applications you were using to copy/paste15:47

raubI am having issues with the kvm packages in 20.04.2 LTS18:54

raubThis started happening on the last upgrade I've done and so far my searches have not been successful18:56
sarnoldraub: try running debsums -c libibverbs118:58
TJ-raub: that's a known bug in qemu 5.1 and there was a fix doing the rounds but it depends on the build config, and also what kernel capabilities the libvirtd is given. Might be worth checking the full service log and possibly the service definition19:00
raubsarnold: It tells me that debsums: package libibverbs is not installed19:00
raubTJ-: Will do19:01
TJ-raub: definition: "systemctl cat libvirtd"19:01
TJ-raub: if you can share the service log: "pastebinit <( journalctl -b -u libvirtd.service )"19:01
sarnoldraub: ah, go with TJ-'s ideas for now :) it sounds like he's got a better handle on it, hehe19:01
TJ-there's some discussion of it at https://listman.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2019-April/msg00876.html19:02
TJ-raub: you're using it on a bare-metal host ?19:03

TJ-raub: can you show us "pastebinit <( ls -l /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libibverbs.so* )"19:10
raubTJ-: I do not have any /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libibverbs.so* files19:15
raubAnd this looks odd:19:15
raublrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 May  7  2017 /usr/lib/libibverbs.so.1 -> libibverbs.so.1.0.019:15
TJ-raub: looks like you've got a leftover from a much older installation19:16
raubNVM, it is /usr/lib/libibverbs.so.1.0.019:16
raubTJ-: Interesting. I wonder why it did not get updated19:16
TJ-raub: you should be seeing: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/9DF3pGwYd4/19:16
TJ-raub: can you determine what package installed that file? "dpkg -S /usr/lib/libibverbs.so"19:18
raub(you type faster than me ;) )19:19
raublibibverbs-dev: /usr/lib/libibverbs.so19:19
TJ-raub: ok, so that is the dev package but you seem not to have the actual library?19:19
raubShouldn't it pull it?19:20
raubPer https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/libibverbs-dev19:20
TJ-qemu depends on it but if you don't have the files as I showed in my recent pastebin then either the package is missing or something is broken19:21
raubReinstall the dev and see if it pulls the library perhaps?19:21
TJ-no19:22
TJ-check if the package is supposed to be installed first; this may be a sign of other breakage so you need to determine that and maybe fix other issues19:22
TJ-raub: "apt list libibverbs1" should show 'installed,automaitic'19:23
raubTJ-: I think it is my fault: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/H5yXQb9MYz/19:25
raubMellanox Connectx3 card crap19:26
TJ-raub: aha!19:26
TJ-raub: well it's an easy fix assuming replacing the Mellanox package doesn't break anything else!19:26
raubLet me undo its damage and then figure out later how to get it to work properly.19:26
TJ-raub: you could put the Mellanox stuff in a container19:27

plujonI'm using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.  Today I am noticing some strange flicker on my desktop.20:37
plujonI see small areas of "static" appear and disappear where the screen is updating.20:37
plujonAny clues on how I can investigate why this is happening?  This is the second time I have seen this occur.  The last time was about a week ago.20:38
plujonThe last time this occurred, I tried recording my desktop session, but the recording showed none of the strange visual artifacts.20:39
sarnoldoh strange20:39
sarnolddo you have two gpus?20:39
plujonI notice that the problem occurs with certain events happen.  For example, when I start a new terminal window, the "black" area is checkered white briefly while it opens.20:40
plujonHowever, if I drag a terminal window around my desktop, there is no flicker.20:40
oerheksso, it can be a monitor issue, wonky cable,...20:40
plujonOr rather, there is much less flicker.20:40
plujonThe monitor is a 24 inch Dell Ultrasharp.20:41
plujonI did recently add an nvme PCI-e card to the desktop for 2 small M.2 drives.20:42
plujonThe cables seem fine AFAICT.20:42
plujonI predict that if I reboot the problem will go away, because that's what happened last time.20:42
plujonThat makes me think the problem is not cabling or connections.20:43
plujonIf I change to a new virtual terminal, (Ctrl-Alt-F1), I don't notice any flicker.  But less happens on it, so I don't know if that's a good test.20:44

soreauplujon: I'd guess a bug in mesa or the window manager/compositor version you're using. Could also be a bug in kernel but perhaps less likely. Which GPU do you have according to `lspci|grep VGA`?20:46
plujonsoreau: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 630 (Desktop)20:46
soreauhm, intel drivers are usually pretty solid20:47
soreauwhat window manager/compositor?20:47
plujonsoreau: I also suspect a bug in the window manager / compositor.20:47
soreaumutter?20:47
plujonThe default: Gnome 3, I think..?20:47
soreauwhat does `echo $WAYLAND_DISPLAY` say in that environment?20:47
plujonsometimes, when I type in emacs, the cursor goes back one or two characters temporarily.20:47
plujonIt's empty.20:48
soreauok so this probably means gnome running on X20:48
plujonYes, I think so.20:48
soreauyou might try to see if running wayland gnome session helps20:48
plujonXDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=ubuntu:GNOME20:48
plujonOn this same hardware, I used to use openbox (lubuntu).  I never saw this same behavior then.  Hmm.  I'll look into trying wayland, I guess.20:49
plujonIt definitely looks like the areas of the screen that are supposed to "update" are the problem.20:50
plujonWould that point to the compositor?  I don't have a good grasp on how stuff actually gets drawn on the monitor.20:50
plujonI wonder why X11 is the default on ubuntu 20.04.20:52
quadratplujon because canonical was not comfortable to support wayland for 10 years on a 20.04 base20:52
soreauplujon: it's hard to say where the problem is actually, but it is most likely either kernel, mesa or window manager20:52
sarnoldwe tried switching to wayland for an earlier release and it did not go great20:52
oerheksthere is never a huge change with LTS, like wayland20:52
soreauwayland is simply not ready for desktop production use yet20:53
sarnoldnvidia drivers still don't work with wayland, so it feels unlikely to ever be a default to me, but that's a guess20:53
soreaubut it's getting there, slowly20:53
oerheksnot ready .. that is why you have a x11 session installed too20:53
quadratsarnold oO nvidia supports wayland, but no xwayland, which is fixed in the 470 drivers20:53
soreauin the mean time, users can test it and report bugs20:53
plujonAre there any logs I should check other than dmesg?  Or would the current bug not be something likely to be logged?20:54
sarnoldquadrat: oh?20:54
oerheksjounalctrl20:55
soreauplujon: no, not really in this case20:55
quadratsarnold yeah xwayland had no acceleration that's why it was disabled by default20:55
quadrat470 is gonna be huge for linux20:55
soreauplujon: I would recommend figuring out what exactly changed/updated that caused the problem20:55
soreauplujon: once you have that information, you can file a bug against the offending component20:56
sarnoldquadrat: cool, thanks for the fix :)20:56
plujonsoreau: Hmm.  Thanks...  I used to use lubuntu, then I added a drive, the PCI-e card, and decided to try vanilla ubuntu.20:58
plujonSo, I changed the whole OS, but both were 20.04 LTS.20:59
plujonI could try switching back to lubuntu with the new hardware and seeing if the problem recurs.  Problem is, it only shows up about once a week so far...20:59
soreauplujon: try gnome wayland first21:00
soreauif you can't isolate the compnent21:00
plujonI'll try that.  But ... maybe I'll poke around a bit before then.  I wouldn't want to lose the bug...21:02
plujonCertain actions lead to the flicker.  Perhaps I can find actions that make the flicker a lot worse.21:02
plujonAlt-tab results in colored flicker all around the borders of my screen.21:03
plujonThe lines seem more horizontal than vertical: greens and blues.  Actually, it looks like the desktop image "leaks through" the task bar for a brief second, partly.21:04
plujonMy desktop background is a glade, and it has green leaves and blue sky and water.21:05
soreauwayland - every frame is perfect21:06
soreauif it's not, probably your drivers (kernel or mesa) have a bug21:06
