VIAdear god, i will never run a GUI on ubuntu again.  please dont eat my parents00:59
sarnoldheh, have you found out why everyone always says "don't run your filemanager as root"?01:02
VIAyes i found out you all feel pretty smart01:07
VIAits annoying getting a pile of dumbness as answer when looking for help you know01:07
VIAi realize maybe i  should always manage my  distro and details when asking tho01:07
VIAi havent bricked a single thing trying stuff as rooot in my entire time using linux01:08
VIAhowever shit breaks itself and breaks itself updating. uefi is a problem too but i think not atm should be on  legacy01:09
VIAwho was the dude that said "login as root" ? wish i was better with names srs01:10
VIAonly useful answer. i refrained from replying that it would overcomplicate things01:10
sarnoldVIA: heh, that was me :)01:11
VIAbut  it would have been a feasible solution i guess01:11
VIAexcellent :)01:11
sarnoldX11 applications *really* aren't written with the assumption of multiple user accounts all working in one session01:11
sarnoldthe toolkits are huge and do a billion file operations all over the home directory, and it's just so easy for gui applications run through sudo or su or whatever to make a huge mess01:12
VIAwhat was the app named ppl suggested i hadn that seemed to be standard01:12
VIAseems my "filemanager" here is exo-open01:12
sarnoldVIA: nautilus? this plugin? https://itsfoss.com/open-nautilus-as-administrator/01:13
VIAi have no ida what X11 is01:13
sarnoldX11 is the default graphics environment01:13
sarnoldKDE or gnome or fluxbox or i3wm whatever run in it01:13
VIAyea nautilus its not here. i generally prefer not to install additionall stuff, when i have already working stuff, and know it should work in a specified manner01:13
sarnoldthere's a newer thingy, wayland, that aims to replace X1101:13
sarnoldbut wayland is more complicated in some ways (the 'compositor' is built in to whatever 'window manager' and copy and paste and all kinds of other things are all implemented in the one tool01:14
sarnoldand it's simpler in others, I think it refuses to let you run different programs as different users entirely01:14
GSMarquisWould love to see a LTS with wayland, pipewire, and BTRFS.01:15
sarnoldGSMarquis: wayland *might* happen in 22.04. I'm less sure about pipewire. btrfs feels pretty unlikely to be a default imho01:15
GSMarquisJust wishes I guess.01:16
sarnoldbe sure to give it a shot in 21.10 and file bugs on things that don't work quite right :)01:16
VIAi dont know about user or session management entirely, like 001:17
VIAnoticed i cant just log out and login as a different user, while the other sess/user remains01:18
VIAim used to that from windows01:18
sarnoldhmm, I've never tried two graphical sessions at once, but using text console as one user and X as another user should work fine01:19
sarnoldit's probably possible to get multiple grpahical sessions to work at once too, I'm just not sure how :)01:19
VIAmakes sense01:19
VIAim unfamiliar with terminology01:20
VIAwhen looking for solutions i go for what i know but often just find endless deadends01:20
VIAlike, what is the newest version of "ubuntu" whats the most recent ..01:21
sarnoldthis table is usually kept up to date https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases01:22
VIAespecially since everyone is so strong about how important updates are01:22
VIAwhen everyone updates everyone is on the same page right01:23
VIAi run a recent version should be up there, either 2nd or 3rd in that row01:23

metallicHello everyone. I have a question on removing a desktop environment.    I am running Ubuntu 20.04 with KDE desktop environment (Kubuntu), and I want to switch to lxqt. I first thought of installing the lxqt tasksel task and deinstalling the KDE's, but I am unsure of the side effects of this procedure. Do you think it would be best to reinstall the OS with lxqt?11:17
guivercmetallic, you can also just install lubuntu on top of your existing kubuntu, then have both.. As they are both Qt5 the side effects will be minimal (I have a system with both installed; you select which you'll use for a session at login)11:18
guiverc`sudo apt install lubuntu-desktop` will get everything; what I was thinking with ^11:19
* guiverc did the reverse; adding kubuntu-desktop to my lubuntu install11:19
oerheksa clean install side by side gives the full experience. but sure, it can be installed on top.11:20
metallicguiverc: thanks for the answer. Yes, I know I can have multiple desktop environments, but I no longer want to use plasma 5, so I am fearful that uninstalling it will take some applications along11:20
oerheksadding a desktop is no problem, removing one is interesting.11:20
guivercuninstalling kubuntu-desktop will cause all non-manually installed apps to be marked for removal... but it's the alternative; ie. remove then install lubuntu-desktop for everything..11:21
guiverc(packages auto-installed by desktop will be removed when you next `apt autoremove`)11:22
oerheksbooting the iso, replacing, would be an option too11:22
metallicmmmm that is exactly what I was thinking of: uninstallation will remove all the dependencies :(11:22
guivercthose used by Lubuntu/LXQt will be kept (or re-installed if you autoremove before you do the install)..11:22
* guiverc wispers; I like some Kubuntu features; eg. it has great tools to select new themes for sddm; Lubuntu doesn't.. so I like both installed11:23
metallicyes, KDE is very customizable, but I feel it just unnecessarily engulfs my memory XD11:24
metallicmy computer is kind of outdated, but it can still keep up with KDE11:25
guivercI use LXQt almost exclusively myself (maybe being on Lubuntu team is part of why)... but other than disk space used, & larger updates (both kubuntu & lubuntu packages will be upgraded) the effect is minimal ; this pc is a 2009 dell11:27
guivercKDE uses Qt5 (same as LXQt) but also KF5 so yes it's heavier; but the KF5 will only be used when/if you use KDE apps  (which at times you may still anyway)11:28

kpcyrdalthough I'm not sure if NetworkManager does its own probes12:50
rbasakGuest14: what kpcyrd is right. I'd add that I think the list of known SSIDs is configured/known/managed in NetworkManager on a regular Ubuntu desktop install, so that's where you'd need to look.12:57
rbasakIOW I don't think that configured but not connected SSIDs could possibly be broadcast without NetworkManager's help, since that's the only component that knows what they are.12:58

I have xrdp / tightvncserver, what I'm not sure about is how to host a vnc session from the existing x session. Is anyone aware of a complete guide on how to set this up? Thx14:54
donofrioepistax, are you tunneling that vnc session though ssh?14:55
epistaxdonofrio, I think it's tunneled through rdp. I rdp into a session that'll let me connect to vnc-any, but I don't know how to make a vnc session for the existing X session14:56
donofrioepistax, what I'm saying is you never want to use vnc with ssl tunnel, rdp is not really strong encryption (if I recall - others here will know more I'm sure)14:58
epistaxdonofrio: On top of it, the home to work link is on a VPN14:59
donofrioepistax, someone gets on to your machine vpn will not help....just my 2 cents15:03

VimVimHi all18:53
lotuspsychjewelcome VimVim18:53
VimVimthx (≧◡≦)18:55
VimVimSo uh.... I'm having some problems with authbind . I'm running my aiohttp server with it and it's not working properly?18:55
VimVim(webserver)18:56
VimVimmy command is "sudo authbing python3 host.py"18:56
VimVim*authbind18:56
VimVimI made a test. Every time the homepage is visited it tries to touch (command) a file in the root directory18:56
VimVimand it's works, nothing stops it.18:56
sumyunguyHey guys19:00
sumyunguyIs there a way to use FDE with touch screen to enter password?19:00
sarnoldexcellent question19:02
alzghI'm on an Ubuntu focal. I ran a vpn-cli that messed up my network. It was my dns. I configured it using resolvectl and it works now. But on restart it goes back to the broken state of the vpn-cli. Where can I look for what the vpn tool did?19:17
sarnoldalzgh: maybe it added a systemd service file -- systemctl list-units  -- maybe it used a sysvinit script, ls /etc/init.d/ -- maybe it modified networkmanager configs, nmcli c -- or nm-applet ..19:24
alzghthanks sarnold going to check them19:24
alzghsarnold is `nm-applet` specific to Gnome? Or let's say, can it be that it isn't active/available in KDE Plasma?19:28
sarnoldalzgh: plasma probably has its own nm interface19:28
alzghIt's probably this, bc this vpn-cli works on Gnome but not on KDE Plasma.19:29
shinobiIs there a tool that will analyze the logs and tell me why my system keeps crashing?19:32
sarnoldnothing that I know of19:32
sarnoldevery few years a team of enthusiastic students who just learned machine learning think they'll do it and announce a project but no one ever hears from them again19:33
VimVimHi uh.... so instead of authbind I can also redirect lower port to higher one, but that doesn't seem to work either19:33
VimVim"sudo iptables -t nat -F" doesn't return anything19:34
sarnoldVimVim: what output would you expect from deleting all your rules?19:35
sarnoldVimVim: does -L show nothing now?19:35
VimVimoh whoops19:36
VimVimThanks, let me try19:36
sarnoldVimVim: it's pretty common for unix utilities to only print output when something *fails* : rm: cannot remove '/tmp/foo': No such file or directory19:36
sarnoldbut when they work, they don't say much:19:37
sarnold⏚ [sarnold:~] 1 $ touch /tmp/foo ; rm /tmp/foo19:37
sarnold⏚ [sarnold:~] $19:37
VimVimthank you sarnold. I see now that I was using flush instead of list19:41
VimVimI redirected 443 to a higher port that I listen to, and website works now!19:41
VimVimyay19:41
VimVimI still prefer the idea authbind but oh well19:42
sarnoldVimVim: depending upon what you're doing, systemd's socket activation might work for you19:47
sarnoldVimVim: this looks like it's decent enough .. https://www.linux.com/training-tutorials/end-road-systemds-socket-units/ the official docs are pretty thick and not very educational, heh19:48
VimVimoh, maybe! I'm already using systemd19:49
VimVimI'll take a look. Thanks!19:49

shinobiThe nvidia 470 driver shows tested in ubuntu 20.04, but on the NVidia website it shows beta. What's the deal with that?20:07
ash_worksiis there an easy way to check if I am running inside `script` ?20:08
ash_worksi(also, please correct my phrasing)20:08
ash_worksilike, the `script` command, as in, prints everything you type to a file20:09
shinobiI see 470.57.02 is the prod release for my card20:10

tripp4hhi, i'm having a problem with ubuntu 21.04, in some audio applications the sounds don't work, applications like milkytracker or eightbitbubsy's fast tracker ii clone. also if i try the sound test in settings/sound/output/output device/test it doesn't give sound output.20:50
jabberwockGuest1675: how malicious is your behavior?20:56
jabberwockthat determines the need or want to trace you :P20:56
sarnoldtripp4h: try running pavucontrol, quite often audio issues can be fixed once you've got that open21:01
=== plasmast1 is now known as n1ggers
tripp4hsarnold: i tried pavucontrol, it doesn't detect milkytacker even i try to play a tracker module with it.21:06
sarnoldtripp4h: dang. maybe it doesn't work with pulseaudio :( maybe amixer? or amix? I wonder if you'll need to stop pulseaudio to use it21:11
tripp4hsarnold: i also tried 'sudo alsa force-reload' but that didn't make an effect either.21:12
