[00:46] Hi, are noob questions allowed here? [00:54] Hi [03:03] I'm not sure if you saw my earlier post about Mint 20.2 not including my Kubuntu partition after it updated the kernel and Grub. I found a manual work around, but I would like for this not to happen when I update Mint. Can someone assist me with this? [03:04] Sorry. I meant to send this in the Mint chat window... [03:06] But, if someone is willing to help... I have Kubuntu in a BTRFS partition and Mint in a EXT4 partition. When Mint has a kernel update and updates grub, it does not see the Kubuntu partition and then there is no grub entry for Kubuntu when I reboot. [03:14] My work around is to copy the grub.cfg from the Kubuntu /@/boot/grub/ directory and pasting it into the Mint /boot/grub/ directory as kubuntu-grub.cfg. Then when I reboot and get to the Mint Grub Menu, I press c to get to the grub command and type configfile /boot/grub/kubuntu-grub.cfg and I can then see Kubuntu's menu, including the Kubuntu (It says Ubuntu) option. Then, when Kubuntu boots, I can type grub-install and then [03:14] the default Grub Menu includes everything. But, I have to do these steps every time Mint updates grub... === axeKirves is now known as kirvesAxe [05:20] tachubletran: run `dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc` in mint (if it's uefi the command is different) and tell it NOT to install itself to any disk like /dev/sda. Then the kubuntu grub will always be the "active" grub [05:21] Oh sorry travelinrob got afk and tab-autocomplete used the wrong name, sorry tachubletran [06:09] Good morning [06:14] where this IRC bot is connected to? [06:15] KDE's IRC channels (re @villagerrrrrrrrr: where this IRC bot is connected to?) [06:24] hi [06:24] i am also connecter there now (re @ri5h46h: KDE's IRC channels) [06:24] this is me (re @IrcsomeBot: hi) === in-divay is now known as villagerrrrr === Lord_of_Life_ is now known as Lord_of_Life [06:26] nice 😊 (re @villagerrrrrrrrr: this is me) [06:28] @ri5h46h hmm === amesser is now known as keks [06:45] hello all [06:45] bye bye all [10:02] . === il_ is now known as khode_mohsen === Iamthehuman is now known as Iamthehuman1 [11:14] Hey everyone! :D [11:14] I have a question [11:14] I got a free monitor yesterday, an old but perfectly working flatscreen DELL, down in the flat, was put there to take for free [11:14] now I am wondering, my primary 27 inch samsung monitor is on my GTX1070 vs HDMI [11:15] the DELL only has DVI and VGA, so I wanna connect it with an old VGA cable, but the 1070 doesnt have a VGA port. So I need to connect it to the IGPU [11:16] I enabled the IGPU (multi-monitor) in the bios so it works, but when I connect it (I am waiting for a power cable to be delivered today for the monitor), will this work by itself? [11:16] fudanshi how can we tell? [11:17] I wanna use the samsung as main monitor on the 1070 via HDMI and I wanna let it do anything 3d/gaming/etc, but I wanna have the igpu drive the smaller dell screen as a secondary monitor at the same time. Does this just work out of the box? I read it does on windows 10, but I am not sure about kubuntu lol [11:17] if you set your IGPU as primairy, basicly it should. [11:17] well basically, can the nvidia card and igpu be "in use" at the same time? (re @IrcsomeBot: fudanshi how can we tell?) [11:17] ah but then it won't have 3d acceleration right? [11:17] then again I use windows for gaming mostly so thats not too terrible... [11:18] most intel IGPU can do some 3 d acceleration. [11:19] I can see in systen information that it sees 2 3daccelerators [11:19] card0 is intel [11:19] card1 is nvidia [11:20] when your powercord arrives, have fun! [11:20] the nvidia driver is loaded and running though... but I guess that means it should work XD [11:20] I hope XD [11:21] ... or I should spend the 3 euros on a DVI cable XD [11:21] Anyway, thanks for confirming it should work :D [11:21] I asked because on the internet, half said it was literally impossible, and the other half was seeing it should be possible. Hence the confusion~ [11:22] only if your IGP is an ancient nvidia 9200, you would not. [11:25] no lol its an IHD 630 [11:25] I hope this is the one case where windows having drivers outside the kernel is a good thing... I really need to keep the gaming performance there. XD if that monitor means I cant play genshin impact anymore it's flying outta the window XD [11:41] Fudanshi: Connecting it via dvi to the nvidia card ain't an option? [11:50] it is! [11:50] but that costs a DVI cable XD [11:50] I am dutch :3 [11:50] thats 5 euros I can also spend on desperately trying to scrape together money to go to Bristol anime con end of this month XD [11:51] dutch .. [11:51] (Yes, I LIVE for anime events and free hugs, they still banned here because of the viruz, so I am flying over Europe for them XD) [11:51] if you live near the town Haarlem, i have a spare [11:52] Hi all [11:52] heya BluesKaj [11:52] hey oerheks [11:53] I went to mondocon in Hungary two weeks ago, I had the time of my life... so many hapy people and everyone was so nice and sweet... and I must have free hugged 500 lovely weebs :3 [11:53] This month, Bristol, and in Oktober, mondocon is again, so back to hungary. :D a return flight is 50 euros lol. Its cheaper then going here :D [11:53] Now, is it *smart* to flee the country to free hug 500 weebs in the middle of a pandemic? Maybe not. Does it destroy the planet to fly every 1 or 2 months? Sure. But by god did I need it and did it restore my mental health :3 [11:53] ahhh I live in Leiden! :D If this doesnt work, I might take you up on that, thanks! :D (re @IrcsomeBot: if you live near the town Haarlem, i have a spare) [11:55] I have a NS travel card so I dont pay for that. :D Anything to save money to afford my European con tour untill everything is allowed again here lol [11:56] !OT | @Fudanshi [11:56] @Fudanshi: #ubuntu is the Ubuntu support channel, for all Ubuntu-related support questions. Please register with NickServ (see /msg ubottu !register) and use #ubuntu-offtopic for other topics (though our !guidelines apply there too). Thanks! [11:59] hmm, think ubottu here should be edited to show as #kubuntu support not #ubuntu [12:01] ah yes sure XD [12:01] sorry bot, its just that the other 2 distros I am in have support and social in one channel lol [12:02] lol?...it's called offtopic like #kubuntu-offtopic chat for example [12:32] To get back on topic, combining intel with nvidia can be done (at least for laptops), it is called optimus or prime. Getting it to work properly is quite hit-or-miss has been my experience. [12:32] IB36 === genii-core is now known as genii [14:23] ah yes, but thats not what I am going to try (I think cable-kun is delayed by a day :/), I just want both to always be active. With the intel one just driving the secondary display... and the nvidia card doing everything else. (re @IrcsomeBot: To get back on topic, combining intel with nvidia can be done (at least for laptops), it is called optimus or prime. Getting it to work properly is quite hit-or-miss has been my experienc [14:24] the secondary display is just there for a small second screen for a second application like discord during watching a show or a character reference image as I am writing a yaoi fic for someone via fiverr or something [14:25] So, two X instances? That is just going to be plain annoying. [14:36] ahhh I was hoping to just have it be like two connected monitors === motive is now known as motiveme [16:14] Yes, to do that you need to set them up like optimus/prime.
