black_13how would I create or have qt5 on ubuntu 20/18 but have debug symbols02:20
sarnoldblack_13: they're stored on another archive, ddebs.ubuntu.com, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debug%20Symbol%20Packages02:27
black_13thanks02:27
black_13i like having qt where i can step into the qt source02:28
sarnoldthe sources are easier, you can duplicate your existing archive lines in apt and change the 'deb' to 'deb-src'02:29
sarnold(I don't know if the debug packages alone bring along the source via dwarf annotations or not, I hope they do..)02:29
black_13i dont know know02:29
black_13or know02:29
black_13or could i just get all the dependencies for qt5 and the build a hybrid?02:30
black_13install in /opt?02:30
black_13 install  qt5 /opt02:30
sarnoldyeah, apt build-dep qt5 (or whatever the package name is..)02:30
black_13that gets messy02:31
sarnoldthough using a builder like sbuild or pbuild with packages would give your more reproducable results. dunno..02:31
sarnoldyeah02:31
black_13 looking over sbuilder02:34
black_13 you can used sbuild in a chroot?02:34
black_13sarnold, had you used sbuild02:43
sarnoldblack_13: it's ever so slightly different, sbuild can use schroot, which manages chroots02:45
black_13i remember going down this path it was not smooth02:47
black_13i had incomplete knowledge of sbuild but not install of qt5 debug02:47
black_13sarnold, thanks i appreciate the notes02:48
sarnoldblack_13: heh, yeah.. there's some notes on sbuild here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SimpleSbuild02:49
sarnoldI wish there were an easier way to build packages. it feels like there really ought to be.02:49
black_13I had this car that only I could drive02:49
black_13i could baby it02:49
sarnolda lot of folks prefer pbuilder, it might be that simpler tool, but sbuild is very close to the builder used on launchpad, so it is more useful when preparing packages for launchpad02:49
black_13having debug builds of things woudl be better02:50
black_13would02:50
sarnoldtry the ddebs, they really should get you most of the way there02:53

linux_daemonhello, i am on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and the command: file, is at version 5.32 . i need to update it to version 5.38, but apt-get upgrade file , says that 5.32 is the latest version. any idea how to force update to version 5.38?11:13
linux_daemontried downloading the zip, unpack, compile and install, but when running file --version, still shows version 5.3211:15
rbasaklinux_daemon: Ubuntu 20.04 ships with file 5.38. The point of using Ubuntu 18.04 and not upgrading to a newer Ubuntu release *is* to not upgrade packages to newer versions. You can hack something together but it won't be supportable or receive security updates.11:17
linux_daemonso basically, either upgrade to 20.04 or no chance to use file at version 5.3211:18
rbasakYou can hack something together but it won't be supportable or receive security updates.11:21

linux_daemondonofrio: i have a file, and on local machine, having file version 5.38, if i run : file -bi downloadedfile , it returns application/csv, which is correct, and in 18.04 having file version 5.32, the same command returns text/plain11:25
donofriolinux_daemon, what does 5.35 return for said downloaded file?11:26
linux_daemoni dont know, but 5.32 returns text/plain. i tried to download the file 5.38 version, compile and install, but it still shows v5.3211:27

donofriolinux_daemon, you *might* be able to apt-get remove file if not too many dependancies and hack/compile your own version but yah you'd be non-standard at that point, what us keeping you from 20.04?11:28
linux_daemontried that, removed version 5.32, tried to compile and run, but the damn thing still shows version 5.3211:29

linux_daemondonofrio: if i try: apt install file=5.38 it states that 5.32 is the latest version and 5.38 is non existent11:34
donofriolinux_daemon, ok so 20.04 is LTS yah might well upgrade I guess...if your running fro, wsl you'll need to remove screen and snapd to upgrade11:34

leftyfbomega_doom: what's the big deal with selecting the OS from the EFI menu from the Windows drive?18:36
=== Starmina_ is now known as Starmina
omega_doomleftyfb: Yes, i want independent installion so that ubuntu will boot on different laptop.18:38
leftyfbomega_doom: ok, so the storage device you are using isn't internal to the laptop. Then disable EFI temporarily and do an MBR install to your external device18:38
omega_doomleftyfb: yes, it is external. Do i need to choose mbr option in the ubuntu installer and everything will be ok?18:40
leftyfbomega_doom: I think if you disable (U)EFI from your BIOS/system, it should do an MBR install. Also, why not just disable your internal storage from the BIOS?18:41
omega_doomleftyfb: disabling hard drives in bios doesn't work.18:42
leftyfbomega_doom: how so? Maybe you're not doing it correctly18:42
leftyfbomega_doom: can I ask, what is your use case of having an installation of ubuntu on an external drive to boot from other machines?18:43
omega_doomleftyfb: I don't know how but it is how it works. Only physical removal works - tested by many people.18:44
TJ-omega_doom: pre-create the EFI-SP and format it before starting the installer18:44
=== Starmina_ is now known as Starmina
TJ-omega_doom: as in, boot in "Try..." mode so you have the Live Desktop then use a terminal shell to prepare the target device before starting the installer; that'll then let the installer's partitioning/boot-loader selection steps 'see' the target as a valid target for installing a boot-loader to18:46
omega_doomleftyfb: Do you think creation of EFI-SP on external drive will work?18:46
TJ-omega_doom: I do this frequently18:46
omega_doomleftyfb: interesting. It sound easy but it is not mentioned in the link i posted for some reason.18:49
omega_doomleftyfb: This is much better than mbr because it requires to switch modes in bios before booting.18:53
leftyfbomega_doom: to be clear, switching EFI off was only a temporary step to get it installed to the MBR of your external device. After that you could re-enable EFI and both should boot just fine. Either way. Good luck18:54
omega_doomleftyfb: Thanks! I will try to create UEFI partition on external drive.18:56
omega_doomleftyfb: But what about this bug? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/139637918:58
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1396379 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise" [High, Confirmed]18:58
leftyfbomega_doom: I have no experience doing TJ-'s suggestion. I can't help with that18:59
TJ-omega_doom: maybe I'm lucky in the ordering when I do that19:07
TJ-omega_doom: possibly it's related to the device name sorting. Examining an installer log may reveal what is going on there19:08

imihi, how do I figure out what happens when I press enter on a jpg or mkv file in MC? for some reason for video files mpv starts it playing without issues, but for images geeqie flashes up for a single moment and then closes19:50
sarnoldimi: check the mc documentation, it probably says if it uses the mimetype system or desktop files or its own tools to figure out which programs to run for which extensions etc19:52
geniiIt should use whatever xdg-open default is19:54
sarnoldoh that's another possibility19:55
sarnoldbut mc predates xdg by a decade or two or three19:55
imithe same way (unlike rm) gio trash puts the files into the ubuntu trash, is there a way to open the file with the default app from commandline (it's ok if it only works under X)?20:01
imixdg-open does the same flashing with geeqie20:12
imihow do I configure which app xdg-open uses?20:12
sumagnadasso i am making an application for myself which will pull my supermix playlist from yt music and play it using libvlc module but it seems like i dont have control over it from the notification area of ubuntu or using media keys on my laptop....so how do i get it tot to show up on the notification area as well as control it using media keys?20:14

webchat79help23So I repurposed an old desktop in the workshop. Put some ubuntu linux on it. Works great! Only thing I would like to change is that when I turn on the power in the workshop, the PC starts booting.20:49
hjeldinwebchat79help23: you should check in your bios options20:51
webchat79help23I did. But can not find it.20:51
webchat79help23I have a 960GC-GS FX20:52
webchat79help23ASRock20:52
hjeldinshould be under ACPI Configuration -> Restore on AC/Power Loss20:53
webchat79help23Oke I go try20:54
webchat79help23I have p1.10 version20:54
webchat79help23I just go in bios and there is a tab? ACPi? and there i put restore?20:54
hjeldinwebchat79help23: i just took a look here: https://download.asrock.com/Manual/960GC-GS%20FX.pdf20:58
hjeldinit should be under the Advanced tab20:58
webchat57@hjeldin Thanx! The PC now boots when i flip on the power to the workshop!21:06
hjeldinwebchat57: you're welcome!21:07
webchat57hjeldin does it mean? ACPI? I would have never found that.21:13
webchat57what21:13
hjeldinstands for advanced configuration and power interface21:14
webchat57Thanx21:15
webchat57I don't shut down the PC. Just turn of the power to the workshop. Is that bad for the computer?21:15
webchat57hjeldin ?21:16
leftyfbyes21:16
webchat57Why?21:18
geniiBecause when you properly shutdown a computer it does stuff like make sure there's no pending write operations to the hard drives, and other housekeeping things21:19
webchat57I just browse firefox and use spotify21:20
geniiAnd if it has spinny disks just cutting power to those is bad21:20
webchat57It has 15 old hdd. But I only use the SSD21:21
webchat57maybe I disconnect the HDD i never use them.21:21
leftyfbwebchat57: you asked if it was bad, it is. Whether you choose to follow the advice is up to you21:25
gneeriiloeepdeerI found some christmas related unicodes online, but, aint there a unicode database already in libreoffice or ubuntu? I found the regular special characters list, but no christmas related unicodes...21:35

Max-PHi, does anyone know what package provides the dm-crypt module for linux-kvm? I'm trying to set up an encrypted disk on an OpenStack cloud VM, and I can get it working with linux-generic but not with the default linux-kvm. It can't find the module in /lib/modules/5.4.0-1045-kvm/, and I can't seem to find what package would provide that. Thanks!23:05
leftyfbMax-P: what version of ubuntu?23:08
Bashing-omMax-P: ^^ linux-modules-5.4.0-1009-aws ?? See: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents&keywords=dm-crypt&mode=filename&suite=focal&arch=any .23:09
sarnoldMax-P: I don't think it's enabled for that kernel, that might be worth a bug report23:11
leftyfbI don't think encrypting a "disk" in the cloud is very popular23:11
Max-Pleftyfb: 20.04, "focal-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk-kvm.img" from "Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) Daily Build [20210824]" precisely23:15

casper34Hey I'm curious how would I be able to install a package from the repos multiple times? like lets say just as example installing nginx 3 times on a server23:33
Max-Pcasper34: what do you mean 3 times? Normally it will just install it over, so you always have one of them. What would you expect?23:34
leftyfbcasper34: you can't23:34
leftyfbcasper34: what exactly are you trying to accomplish?23:34
genii-awayThere's no forseeable use case for this23:34
=== linaelizabeth is now known as LinaElizabeth
Max-Pgenii-away: could be like with php where there's php7.2-*, php7.4-*, php8.0-* but I can't see why anyone would want that with nginx23:35
casper34Well trying to get away from docker because I have been really diapointed with them waiting to email users to after their chages has taken affect, so looking for a way to run multiple instances of a aplication to then get everything back to babe bone23:36
leftyfbbabe none?23:36
casper34so I will have find a way to run 3 instances of nginx23:37
sarnoldcasper34: ah; that sounds like kubernetes or lxd territory, depending upon what you're trying to do23:37
casper34sorry miss spelling ( bare bone ) as in non containortized23:37
leftyfbcasper34: you know you can use virtual hosts on nginx right?23:37
Max-PDo you *need* to run 3 independant instances of nginx? You should be able to just throw all of your configs together and it would just work23:37
genii-awayset it's conf file to however many instances23:38
genii-awayhm23:38
casper34yes but nginx does not allow to set user permissions per vhost23:38
leftyfbcasper34: user permission?23:38
Bashing-omcasper34: snap packing ? nginxrtmp-minsikl  0.1      minsikl .23:38
casper34and each instance needs its own file perssions23:38
Max-Pwhy?23:38
leftyfbcasper34: you can point the document root to a users home directory, add the user to a web group and you're done23:39
casper34security. I do not have 2 sites rummimg as the same user because if a site would be hacked then there could be infections on multiple sites23:39
Max-Pnginx's user doesn't have to match, it just needs to have read permission. You can set things to be readable to the www-data group, or you can use ACLs to give www-data read permissions where it needs to23:39
Max-Pnginx doesn't run dynamic content so that's not a concern23:40
leftyfbcasper34: if you're looking for that sort of security then you want containers. Either docker or lxd23:40
casper34well they do. like everytime I have tried to only change it in the php-fpm it always fails because nginx then looses access23:40
Max-PAnyway if you _really_ want to do that, you can copy over /lib/systemd/system/nginx.service to /etc/systemd/system/nginx-copy-whatever.service and have 3 nginx services running, but you're better off fixing your permissions instead23:41
casper34well docker is a no go with them changing ToS and waiting to email people about it to after23:41
Max-PI have multiple servers with multiple PHP pools all on the same nginx no problem23:41
casper34or in this point it were their subsciption that I were a part of and still they waited to after23:42
Max-PYou need to make sure nginx has permission to access the PHP sockets, and the files, but that doesn't have to grant PHP anything to the other sites23:42
casper34that has naver worked for me on nether ubuntu or debian. Gave up with it after trying for three month wich is why I chose docker unfortunally back then and now has the pain moving everything out of docker23:43
Max-PPHP with pools for user1, user2, user3. All static content readable by group www-data, all PHP sockets read-write by www-data (so nginx can serve static content, and call PHP for the rest). user1-3 with no access to www-data, so they can't talk or interact with eachother23:46
casper34If I use the systemd copy method btw woudnt it then be a pain to update versions and patch the system23:46
Max-PUnless the systemd unit changes drastically, not really. You'd pretty much just be duplicating the service definition, not the package itself23:47
Max-POr if you really want to stay as close as possible to the docker solution, check podman maybe23:47
casper34Oh then it would not work because it needs everything behind23:47
Max-PYou don't need 3 copies of the whole nginx package to run 3 of them: you have 3 services starting the same nginx version, but with a different configuration file23:48
casper34tbh after this with docker and onter things were things have changed within short notice or none ( not related to this case ), my plan is to get as far away for containeraization as posible because of rules could change from one day to another and I would be in the same issue again23:50
casper34well the config files are also upgraded in mayjor patches so yeah23:50
casper34but thanks alot going to see what I can do because have to find a solution fast23:51
Max-PIn that case the easiest for you might be to just make lxd containers: it's basically just VMs but without the overhead of a full VM. You'd effectively just be dropping the "container management" layer that docker provides on top as well as the prebuilt-images from docker-hub. So you install Ubuntu as usual and manage it like an actual Ubuntu23:54
Max-Pinstance but it otherwise behaves just like docker containers (because that's what docker uses under the hood)23:54
casper34Yeah but then I also have to pay extra for the servers. Thaty was what I liked with docker because most of the things were shared with the host under the hood to keep the footprint down23:56
Max-PWhy would you pay anything extra? It all still runs on the same box23:56
casper34I do believe what I have leaned ( many years ago ) that lxd do have overhead so the resource requirement will grow23:58
casper34including ram and cpu23:58
leftyfbcasper34: only for the services you run in them, exactly like they would in docker23:58
Max-Plxd and docker literally use the same kernel features to run their containers (cgroups and namespaces)23:59
