endermen1094how can i set up btrfs support on a drive cataining a different linux distro without reformating it  01:03
lubot[telegram] <teward001> not possible.  but also you don't state what OS you're using, which is relevant.01:04
endermen1094current os running lubuntu 01:05
endermen1094os that is installed on btrfs is gentoo 01:07
guivercwhat release?   I've used BTRFS file-systems from lubuntu without issue (opensuse formatted)01:08
endermen1094guiverc: are you asking me ? 01:09
guivercteward asked you too; you mentioned only lubuntu without being specific on release01:10
lubot[telegram] <teward001> and it's also not possible to apply btrfs without a reformat of an os so you can't just 'change' gentoo to use btrfs01:10
lubot[telegram] <teward001> even if you could, making gentoo btrfs compativle and usable is outside the scope of this room since it's for Lubuntu not Gentoo01:11
endermen1094 lsb_release -a01:11
endermen1094No LSB modules are available.01:11
endermen1094Distributor ID: Ubuntu01:11
endermen1094Description:    Ubuntu 21.0401:11
endermen1094Release:        21.0401:11
endermen1094the parision is already  btrfs but asking as somehow it disapeared from grub somehow on os-prober and mounting it 01:12
guivercI've used BTRFS (formatted by opensuse) as a data drive to copy files from it (possibly to it as well), but I don't know how you intend to use it; if you're trying to install to it - that maybe different/difficult as per teward001's indication01:13
guivercI've had issues with update-grub not detecting an opensuse system (btrfs); I usually resolved by 'mounting' the partition manually then re-running the `update-grub` where it was recognized 01:15
Eickmeyerguiverc: That's a known flaw in grub: it doesn't actually see filesystems inside of lvfs containers or otherwise.01:16
endermen1094i just asked  in the respective irc channel and now in waiting for a responce from #gentoo01:17
guivercyeah that fits Eickmeyer ... I used to come across it semi-regularly with QA-test installs after one of btrfs/xfs (maybe both) followed by a install.alongside QA-test... avoid that combination to not waste time with it..   Thanks for reminder.01:17

JoeLlamaHello and I really am starting to understand that PCManFM-Qt has issues running under lubuntu...  I have replaced it with PCManFM and it solved some issues.  However there are still other issues that it didn't solve that I won't go into.  Just an FYI.05:05
JoeMooCowaw nuts lost sonnection not sure how much of my message got posted :(05:09
JoeMooCow*sigh* one more time:05:09
JoeMooCowHello and I really am starting to understand that PCManFM-Qt has issues running under lubuntu...  I have replaced it with PCManFM and it solved some issues.  However there are still other issues that it didn't solve that I won't go into.  Just an FYI.05:10
JoeMooCowJust one question for a few people using PCManFM-Qt under lubuntu:  Can you click on an internet shortcut link using the file manager and not get an error??  I will wait around for anyone to respond.  Thank you :)05:11
guivercJoeLlama; pcmanfm-qt handles the desktop under Lubuntu/LXQt; it cannot be replaced by pcmanfm except as a file-manager (ie. it's secondary function)05:26
guivercLubuntu uses a LXQt desktop; hence ... it's critical & if you have issues, providing bug reports may help us understand as I don't know what you're referring to (LXQt can't operate without pcmanfm-qt; just like LXDE couldn't without pcmanfm - it's core to desktop)05:31
JoeMooCowhi guiverc :)05:37
JoeMooCowu r probably my favorite on this channel at this point... :P05:38
JoeMooCowyes there is already a bug report about somne of this stuff,,, I would like to help report this also,,,05:39
guivercLXQt is WM agnostic; Lubuntu uses openbox for WM functions; so if pcmanfm-qt is gone you'll likely only be using openbox (ie. not LXQt; same as you were in older Lubuntu with LXDE; openbox was the WM used then too)05:39
JoeMooCowI like being a part of the solution not be a part of the problem.05:39
JoeMooCowI would like to see this fixed.05:39
JoeMooCowI am using both PCManFM and PCManFM-Qt05:40
guivercfirstly what release please05:40
JoeMooCowand yes I read about issues with LXQt05:40
JoeMooCow20.04.5 is what I run.,.,05:41
JoeMooCowI have one question for you guiverc...05:41
guiverc20.04.5 isn't scheduled until 2nd half of 2022; it won't be 20.04.5; (20.04.3 was last upgrade step for focal)05:41
JoeMooCowcan you click on and open an internet link from PCManFM-Qt without an error?05:42
JoeMooCowoh?05:42
JoeMooCowokay then I am running 20.04 with updates and upgrades how ever you put it..,05:42
JoeMooCowI am sticking with lubuntu at this point through thick and thin05:42
JoeMooCowI am using both of those file managers.,,,  when one doesn't work for something I use the other and vice versa05:43
guivercI don't see where you'd click on an internet link from pcmanfm-qt; no function for it  ; do you mean in the address line (where mine currently says /home/guiverc )05:45
guiverc(path bar)05:46
JoeMooCowI have I guess what you call symbokic links to websites...,05:46
JoeMooCowI used to be able to drag those from thge address bar to a folder but that stopped working05:46
JoeMooCowmy links work from PCManFM but not the Qt05:47
JoeMooCowyou cannot click on an internet shortcut and have it open in browser>>05:47
JoeMooCow???05:47
guivercokay; I'd never have done that, and wouldn't want to personally; I'd view in editor & if happy then copy & paste into browser only05:47
JoeMooCow?!05:47
JoeMooCowI don't understand...05:48
JoeMooCowyou don't have internet shortcut links???05:48
* JoeMooCow is confused05:48
guivercnope.05:48
JoeMooCowI have to visit like 25 websites a day05:48
JoeMooCowthat would make me crazy if I didn't have a button I could just push05:48
JoeMooCowI honestly don't understand05:48
JoeMooCowhow can anyone do business that way?05:49
JoeMooCowwell guiverc you helped me understand a little why people don't seem to understand what I mean05:51
JoeMooCowI guess they do not use that method05:51
guivercokay I just created a fridge.ubuntu.com.lnk file and when opened; it opens in firefox 05:51
JoeMooCowit does?05:51
JoeMooCowfrom PCManFM-Qt?05:51
guivercyep from pcmanfm-qt, at first it asked me how to deal with the .lnk file & I selected firefox; contents of file was only "https://fridge.ubuntu.com/05:52
guiverc" created by me at terminal05:52
guivercnote:  I'm on impish & not focal05:52
JoeMooCowokay so now this is a *me* issue05:54
guivercnote: it didn't go to website (what you likely want); it opened file:///home/guiverc/fridge.ubuntu.com.lnk in browse05:54
JoeMooCowsomething is up with my build05:54
JoeMooCowso you have a link in folder... you click on it and it just opens up the link in the browser??05:54
guivercI can explore this some, but I gotta step away awhile now (16:00 local I gotta do stuff) but I'll explore a little 05:55
JoeMooCowokay thanks guiverc you helped me a lot I truly appreciate that...05:55
guivercI created a file "cat >fridge.ubuntu.com.lnk" which had the http://.. inside.. but firefox opened that file; not the link in the file; which isn't I bet what you want05:55
JoeMooCowI think Iwill reinstall to another drive and see if the issue continues05:56
JoeMooCowno I need to click on a link like www, abcbackn.,com and have it go there immediately05:56
JoeMooCowI mean... what else/105:56
JoeMooCowI deal with about 25 financial institutions on a daily basis05:57
JoeMooCowI don't understand why my CPU usage goes to 100% on some websites also., sustained05:58
JoeMooCowokay guiverc thanks again hope to talk with you soon05:58
guivercpersonally I like copy/pasting from a simple text file (allows me to read the link & ensure there is nothing suspicious there).  most of my links are restored in firefox, others in chromium06:19
guivercif lnk was changed to URL it was recognized as URL; but effect was the same for me06:20
JoeMooCowGuest8809 I do that sometimes but...06:24
JoeMooCowpart of what I do is go to financial websites06:24
guivercI've booted a focal/20.04 box; same reaction to created file as I get with impish06:24
JoeMooCowand it's so much easier just to click one thing06:24
JoeMooCowit's a locate and click06:25
JoeMooCowany other method is too many steps06:25
JoeMooCowand I am amazed that you guys don't seem to have a setup for that06:25
JoeMooCowin windows I used to have a HUGE panel at the bottom auto hide06:26
lubot[telegram] <lynorian> is the manual on autohide not clear?06:26
JoeMooCowoh yes Lynorian but...06:34
JoeMooCowI need to load that bar up to abot halfway up the screen06:34
JoeMooCowI have links about 200 of them06:34
JoeMooCoweverything from weather to recent earthquake data.06:35
JoeMooCowfinanacial institutions06:35
JoeMooCowsearch engines06:35
JoeMooCowlike www.findparts.com06:35
guivercfyi: setups get created when it's something we do regularly.. personally I'd likely use VMs for many sites; or use different boxes for different financial sites06:35
JoeMooCowone of my favorites for finding chips and electronic parts06:36
JoeMooCowif you like try http://www.findparts.com/ try :)06:36
guivercany I can semi-auto a script 'fridge.ubuntu.com.sh` via double-click ; it contains "#!/bin/bash \n xdg-open https://fridge.ubuntu.com/"06:36
guivercI have to click "execute" to confirm on the double-click06:37
guivercthat was tested in impish; I can test in focal too shortly if wanted06:37
guivercbut do you understand how I formatted the text; \n = newline06:38
JoeMooCowto got to a site or folder location I would just muve the cursor to the bottom of the screen the panel would pop up and I would locate the link in like half a second and click and i was there what's not to love abot that?06:38
JoeMooCowIt was a VERY powerful function for me06:41
JoeMooCowwell okay if you guys know a way I can get that panel to open to about have the screen I would appreciate that.,.,. perhaps there is a configuration file some place to modify that limit06:42
JoeMooCowhrm okay guiverc I see what you are saying I think... I did open some as applications and that did work that was a workaround06:48
JoeMooCowI need to sometimes type in a website... drag the little lock icon on the address bar to a symbolic link in a folder and then rename it generally06:49
JoeMooCowand then later click on that link (preferably once) an it just goes too that website in a tab06:50
JoeMooCowmoving the mouse or touching the trackpad in as few moves and clicks as humanly possible06:51
guiverci didn't mention it (I believe), but I did `chmod +x` my fridge.ubuntu.com.sh script06:54
=== Guest8809 is now known as UnSeeN
JoeMooCowyes I had to make my link executable... and in PCManFM-Qt I was not able to OR the file manager was ignoring it06:59
JoeMooCowevery time I clicked on a link it asked about making it executable07:00
guiverci used `chmod +x` at term first (the moment I added shebang/#!/bin/bash) sorry I didn't think of mentioning it07:01
JoeMooCowno it's okay07:01
JoeMooCowI only understand some of it07:01
JoeMooCowhow can we make firefox and PCManFM-Qt allow a direct drag the icon on the address bar to the folder and create an executable sybolic link to open upo the website again?07:03
JoeMooCowThat is my only dream in life atm07:03
JoeMooCowokay guiverc thanks for talking with me... I've taken up anough channel bandwidth tonight...  please think about it. Thanks!07:04
guivercJoeMooCow, as for that I don't know;  I suspect a dev (with a better understanding of how it works) is required..  it maybe it cannot as it's not something the devs would consider anyone would ever want/do (I didn't know what you meant if you recall)07:04
guiverc(by dev singular I was thinking lubuntu dev; devs plural I was thinking lxqt devs)07:05
JoeMooCowOkay well I appreciate you comments I really do,,,  my comment to you (and the channel) is.,. windows does that.  I know that sounds rude but windows can do that and I think lubuntu should too.  Makes things super simple and saves tons of time,,,07:06
JoeMooCowwheb I research something on a project sometimes I will nee 40 of 50 neew websites... you know like parts manufacturers and software makers07:07
JoeMooCowokay well I think finally you get the idea,,,  I just hope that people understand what I am saying and that this is such a simple and powerful tool,,,07:08
JoeMooCowit just seems to me that lubuntu should be the solution that has that feature.07:08
* JoeMooCow steps from his soapbox07:08

jiehaunhello11:27
guiverc@Cape, depending on your device ram specs; it maybe you need to create more swap (default install size is only 512MB which is small; refer https://discourse.lubuntu.me/t/how-to-create-a-swapfile-in-lubuntu-20-04-20-10/1959 which shows how to create a 8GB size; adjust the size to what you need; or investigate if swap is your issue; the post has some commands on that too11:35
guiverc@Cape, I'm unsure of what you mean when you say "boot up menu"; to me it's `grub` you're talking about but I don't know sorry.11:38
