TortillaSandwichare ubuntu installs encrypted by default now, btw?00:10
wireheadhello, does anyone know how to get Ubuntu's Image Viewer to view .png files00:10
TortillaSandwichio didn't see an option for that00:10
NoBugButFeaturenisa, if you are going to install it, what do you mean not install it. If it already is installed it won't hurt anything.00:10
nisaTortillaSandwich: you can choose during partitioning00:10
NoBugButFeatureTortillaSandwich, Yes they do, there is a manual partitioning option. What I do is I make a small partition and leave that for /home. It doesn't make a difference if your just using Ubuntu for it's OS, unless you are going to install a lot of apps.00:10
TortillaSandwichcool cool00:21
TortillaSandwichalright all looks good00:21

webchat45Hello, I hope this is the right channel for asking a networking  related question and someone can help me. I have a networking problem on Ubunutu 21.04 with the network manager icon always showing the wired connection symbol although wifi is connecting successfully to the router.01:11
NoBugButFeaturewebchat45, if you are having problems with connecting to the Internet do you have your router password set?01:12
webchat45NoBugButFeature yes!01:13
NoBugButFeaturewebchat45, please provide the password.01:13
nr0q_radioughh what?01:13
oerheksignore NoBugButFeature01:13
NoBugButFeatureoerheks, I don't think he actually had a problem.01:13
webchat45ok :)01:14
nr0q_radiohe's just asking why the icon indicates a wired connection vs a symbol for wireless01:14
oerheksNoBugButFeature please troll on an other network, you are warned.01:14
NoBugButFeaturewebchat45, the reason the network icon is indicating a wired connection is because the wired connection is being used in order to connect to the internet. Thats why the icon is showing a wired connection.01:14
nr0q_radioNoBugButFeature no he said he is connected to a wireless network you didn't read his OP very well01:15
NoBugButFeaturenr0q_radio, webchat45 is trying to connect to an Ethernet port but his laptop has a wireless card.01:15
oerhekswebchat45, here the wifi symbol appears, did you switch or used wifi only?01:15
nr0q_radioNoBugButFeature your not helping01:15
NoBugButFeatureSo what nr0q_radio what are you talking about?01:15
webchat45nr0q_radio yes, but internet is also not working. I can connect to the router via phone though01:15
nr0q_radiook that's not what your post above said01:16

nr0q_radiohave you been able to connect previously to this wifi or is this the first time with this computer01:17
webchat45I was able to connect previously, yes.01:18
webchat45It think it could have been was messed up from installation of the protonmailvpn client01:18
oerheksrebooting a router sometimes helps strange connections issues01:18
nr0q_radioI'd start with rebooting the router like oerheks said01:19
oerheksoh, late info, protonmailvpn client01:19
nr0q_radiohmm, that'd certainly make things appear broke if it's trying to route every over the VPN when it doesn't have to01:19
webchat45I can connect to the router, according the network manager. but it shows the wired icon.01:20
NoBugButFeaturewebchat45, what do you mean by "network manager" ?01:20
nr0q_radioreally?01:20
webchat45I uninstalled the vpn client with apt purge01:21
nr0q_radiodoes that help?01:21
webchat45no, same01:21
NoBugButFeaturehave you set static IP address in /etc/networking/interfaces ?01:21
nr0q_radiowell probably not if he's using the gui network manager01:21
nr0q_radiobut that vpn package might have have mucked up stuff01:21
NoBugButFeatureoh lol01:22
oerheksi read no uninstall guide .. https://www.tecmint.com/install-protonvpn-in-linux/01:22

webchat45yes, I think you are probably correct nr0q_radio01:22
NoBugButFeaturebut I'd remove protonvpn first since it probably did some damage01:22
nr0q_radioum he did01:22
webchat45Is it possible to reset the networking config to a state like when installing a new system ?01:25
NoBugButFeaturewhat I did is removed vpn and then reinstalled01:25
oerhekskill switch https://protonvpn.com/support/linux-vpn-tool/#uninstall01:26
oerheksthen remove cache and reboot?01:26
webchat45Yeah, this could have messed up the config.01:26
webchat45thanks oerheks I'll try to figure that out now.01:27
webchat45"nmcli c show" displays two pvpn entries: killswitch and ip6leak-protection01:34
nr0q_radioI'd remove those01:35
webchat45yep. have to figure out how to do that. rebooting...01:35
webchat45nr0q_radio oerheks I removed the still existent pvpn connections and this fixed it. I am so grateful for your help :)01:43

Lumpio-I have resorted to installing Google's version of Chrome instead of chromium in order to get a version that works. So far haven't seen any of the quirks that come with the snap version.07:55

rxdeathit plugs directly into a usb header on the motherboard08:44

rxdeathso i think i want to plug it into the other header and see if the message comes back08:45

KBarbut since you found the device thats been acting up08:47

no_gravityIn gparted, what is the difference between "Partition name" and "Label"?12:59
ograone is a name in the partition table, the other is a label on the filesystem level13:00
no_gravityogra: Oh, I see. So to name a partition that will not be formatted, I need to give it a "Partition name".13:00
ograright13:00
no_gravityThanks13:00
ogranotsure how much the partiton name will be used anywhere though ...13:00
ograif you use Label= on your kernel cmdline or fstab i think that only looks at the filesystem level13:01

Nervensaegehi! i'm facing problems with the broadcom wifi on my laptop, when i open the console and write 'sudo rmmod brcm80211', then iwconfig wlan0 essid myssid mode managed   i will see that i have an ip. and i can ping google. but i don't know how to start, i mean, what to write in the command line. any help please?13:02
no_gravityWhen I copy a linux partition with "cp -a" to another partition, will I be able to boot that other partition?13:03
Nervensaegeno_gravity: probably not :)13:03
no_gravityNervensaege: ?13:07
Nervensaegeno_gravity: when you copy one partition to another partition, you will be able to boot that new partition, if the bootloader was installed on that partition13:07
no_gravityNervensaege: I would like to put the bootloader on yet another partition.13:07
Nervensaegeand bootloader can be put on an arbitrary partition (I think, I have no real experience with this)13:07

samirHi Everyone.  I've got a daily cron job listed in my crontab -l.  Is there an easy way to skip today's execution but resume on a daily schedule tomorrow?17:56
Nervensaegesamir: you can have multiple "jobs" in one cron-file, in case you want to add more jobs17:56
samirNervensaege:  Apologies but I'm not sure I understand how that helps me skip today's execution without impacting future runs of my job17:59
Nervensaegesamir: if the crontab -l command shows more than one line, each line is like an single cron-job. You add more than one by starting the new one with "@ " and then putting " */5" on the end. So it could look like "@every 5min *.pl" for your job (and ".pl" is your script file)17:59
tomreynNervensaege: but this still doesn't answer samir's question, i would think18:00
Nervensaegetomreyn: Ah, sry then I was not answering your question. I'm not very experienced in crontab-tricks and didn't want to mislead.18:00
samirI'd prefer not stopping the cron service as that would impact other jobs that are scheduled18:02
TJ-samir: is the 'job' a shell script or command to be called?18:03
tomreynsamir: i don't think there is. you could edit the cron job to not run if the date mateches today's. and then later change it again to remove that test.18:03
samirTJ-: the job executes a shell script18:03
samirtomreyn: My original thought was to just comment it out for today and then uncomment it out tomorrow (assuming I remembered to do that!)18:04
samirI guess I could create another job to remind me!18:05
tomreynsamir: right, that's more risky18:05
TJ-samir: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/chRGzT5yn6/18:06
TJ-samir: basically, install a non-op placeholder with the same script name but in /usr/local/bin/ where it should be found in PATH before your actual script (assuming your actual cron script isn't also in /usr/local/bin/). This script does nothing except delete itself18:07
NervensaegeI would like to get access to the full list of installed packages with the command dpkg --get-selections and sort it like this18:07
TJ-Nervensaege: better to use "sudo debfoster -q; debfoster --show-keepers"18:08
NervensaegeI like how the package manager asks questions when you install new packages18:08
tomreynsamir: my approach was to change your current    foobar    into    [ "$(date +%Y%m%d)" -ne 20211004 ] && foobar18:08
TJ-Nervensaege: --get-selections lists versioned libraries, whereas debfoster --show-keepers lists only packages that are at the top of the dependency pile18:08
Nervensaegethanks I guess18:09
AavarIs there a simple tool to set a static IP in ubuntu? one that does not need to edit files and so on. For example in the way that Raspberry OS or Pihole does it?18:10
samirTJ-: Thanks.  Looks like a self-destructing do-nothing script?  Appreciate the suggestion!18:10
Aavar(in terminal)18:10
TJ-samir: yes; it just gets called due to the PATH location before the usual script (providing the 'real' script is later in the PATH)18:11
NervensaegeWhat I really hate is when stuff like python3 isn't listed, even though I have the package installed18:11
oerheksAavar, networkmanager only i guess18:11
samirtomreyn: Got it.  Just a one-time change which I don't have to worry about remembering to update again tomorrow18:11
Nervensaegeit just seems to ignore everything18:11
TJ-Nervensaege: what 'it' are you referring to?18:11
Nervensaegethat list18:11
oerheks*uhum* all current ubuntu versions have python3 installed18:12
Aavaroerheks: hmm... there should be one :D If only I knew any programing...18:15
oerheksnm-cli?18:16
TJ-someone elsewhere was asking how to limit I/O for a process to avoid stalling other operations. I put this simple cgroups demo together to show how easy it is using cgroups, and wanted to share it before I forget. https://paste.debian.net/1214302/18:16
oerhekssome hints; https://opensource.com/article/20/7/nmcli18:17
tomreynAavar: there is "ip"18:18
Aavaroerheks: thank you. I will look into it :)18:18
TJ-Aavar: e.g. "sudo ip address add fe80::1/64 dev eth0"18:18
AavarTJ-: That only sets a ip like ifconfig does right? It doesn't configure the machine to use a static ip? Am I right?18:25
