JustALawnGnome7Hey all, I just installed Ubuntu 21.10 on both my home laptop and desktop. MimasI'm considering my main OS... is there a "snipping tool" in Ubuntu?01:13
sarnoldwhat's a snipping tool?01:16

Mimasto capture something on your screen. it has different modes, like fullscreen, rectangle, free-form (who does that?)01:18
sarnoldaha01:18
sarnoldif you're running a desktop environment there's a good chance the print screen key on your keyboard already does this01:18
sarnoldif not it probably isn't too hard to use01:18
sarnoldI run i3wm so I don't have anything already hooked up :) I use xwd because it's what I've always used but it kinda sucks if I'm honest..01:19
Mimasyes, i used prt scrn... what was that key?01:19

jadewcurrently they show up as two separate drives01:24
sarnoldjadew: this wikipage probably hasn't been touched in a decade but it might have some hints https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto01:27
jadewsarnold, thanks01:27
sarnoldjadew: but if you've got something like windows storage spaces or whateer it is they're calling their newer thing it probably won't help much..01:27
jadewsarnold, no, I've had this for quite some time, it's a soft raid 101:28

mohnishHi, I'm planning to reinstall ubuntu on a uefi laptop with windows 7 and ubuntu 14.04 dual booting at the moment05:04
mohnishThe way I think I should do it, is to backup the data on the linux partition, delete that partition, and install ubuntu 20.04 choosing the option "Install ubuntu alongside windows 7", right?05:05
Mekaneckmohnish: you know that Windows 7 isn't support anymore?05:11
Mekaneckneither is Ubuntu 14.04 by the way, hence the reinstall i guess05:12
mohnishMekaneck: if windows 7 is not supported anymore, does that mean that the method won't work?05:21
Mekaneckmohnish: just saying that windows 7 is vulnerable and should be deleted05:51
Mekaneckif you need windows badly then at least upgrade to W 1005:52
mohnishMekaneck:  yeah, I will06:03
mohnishMekaneck:  but will that method of upgrading ubuntu work?06:03
mohnishthat doesn't interfere with the windows partition?06:03
TheBigKwhenever i do a release-upgrade i check if all my installed packages have a mirror behind it. i found out that the package libslirp0 in the impish version is considered a downgrade from the one in ubuntu hirsute06:09
guivercmohnish, you haven't said if desktop or server install; but I'd just perform an 'upgrade via re-install'  (use existing partitions without format) if it's a desktop system; after cleaning out 3rd party sources; and any packages that will create issues for the upgrade... I'd not expect any data restoration to be required - but given it's a well-past EOL (for both) OSes you're asking about we can only offer opinions06:09
guivercmy prior comment ^ assumed desktop install (ie. system dirs being wiped won't lose desktop configs)06:10
mohnishits a desktop install, yes06:10
mohnishI'd rather have a clean install though, I was just asking if it is possible to do it the way I suggested06:12
mohnishI understand windoes 7 is EOL, but the person that the laptop belongs to does not want it to be updated06:13
guivercI almost always opt for 'something else' & tell the installer what I want...  it's been a looong time since I've install alongside windows 7 (& never with ubiquity found in focal/20.04)06:15

diophantozwell at this point i just want to uninstall it14:52
diophantozis that possible?14:52
leftyfbdiophantoz: sudo apt remove --purge jd-gui14:52
markwdevmgedmin, this is an account used to run a service. Setting the environment variable file in the service unit doesn't seem to work, making me think the service is just starting fresh processes for all the work it does, and losing the variables.14:53
tomreyndiophantoz: note that a given package <packagename> doesn't necessarily provide a command <packagename>, and that the .deb file it is packaged into doesn't have to be called <packagename>.deb14:54
mgedminmarkwdev: you can specify environment vars in the systemd unit14:55
mgedminotherwise right, services don't load env vars from ~/.profile14:56

coz_bancroft, I always use MATE15:02

tomreynbancroft: xsebsors would be a graphical frontend to lm-sensors. you can also just install that, and run sensors-detect15:03
leftyfbmarkwdev: as mentioned, you set envars as part of the service unit15:03
coz_^^^^ bancroft15:03
coz_bancroft, yes I skipped what tomreyn mentioned15:04
markwdevleftyfb, we are doing that, but it's not working for some reason. The only thing i can figure is that Nagios is spawning fresh processes for the checks that have their own environment.15:04
tomreynbancroft: lm-sensors is a debian package, available from via apt.15:05
tomreyni don't know whether you can actually check DIMM temperature with it, though. you'll see.15:06

bancroftoh-kay, so its installed, I've restarted kmod like it asked, and when I try to run sensors I still get the same as before ?15:09
mgedmina decade or two ago there were some thinkpad models where running sensors-detect could brick the hardware, so there are scary warnings and confirmations15:10

svm_invictvsGrub hangs on me if I press a key on the boot menu.15:55

svm_invictvsAlso, is there even a need for letting grub dual boot these days? It's easy enough for me to just use the UEFI boot menu on my machine.15:57
mgedminI don't think there's need, it's just simpler to use grub everywhere15:59

TJ-svm_invictvs: GRUB isn't about dual-boot, the main benefit is the Advanced/recovery entries16:20
TJ-svm_invictvs: what kind of connection does the keyboard use? USBHID, PS/2 i8042, serial?16:20
svm_invictvsTJ-, Well. I've been using it for dual boot for like 20 years.16:20
svm_invictvsTJ-, That's a good question. let me look16:21
svm_invictvsTJ-, Yeah, I know it's useful for lots of things (eg troubleshooting kernel stuff and lots of other things. It also makes dual booting hella convenient.)16:21
zfigzPsi-Jack: what do you usually do when it comes to restoring using borg?16:22
zfigzdo you boot with a usb drive and then run it ?16:22
ogralilo is the only true linux bootloader anyway ... grub ... UEFI ... newfangled stuff .... pfft16:23
TJ-svm_invictvs: dual-boot entries come courtesy of os-prober though, so not strictly due to GRUB - GRUB just provides a programmable menu system (being pedantic) :D16:23
zfigzi've used it to restore a handful of files, but never a full system restore.16:23
svm_invictvsTJ-, Yeah. ... I'm still looking up the keyboard I have16:23
TJ-zfigz: wrong channel by any chance? I think you were originally in #linux talking to Psi-Jack16:24
TJ-svm_invictvs: if you can share the kernel log we can get a good idea. "journalctl -k | nc termbin.com 9999"16:24
svm_invictvsI'm also an idiot. I'm trying to look up my amazon history for the model # when I could just look at dmesg16:24
TJ-svm_invictvs: it's not the keyboard itself we want to know, it's how the PC interfaces to it, so kernel log is the thing16:25

mgedminhmm my country mirror has postgresql-client-13 13.3-1build116:32
TJ-svm_invictvs: working through your log. As I go, I see some issues you might need to investigate. Eg. "0000:04:00.0: devices behind bridge are unusable because [bus 05-24] cannot be assigned for them"16:32
mgedmin(lt.archive.ubuntu.com)16:33
TJ-svm_invictvs: "0000:04:00.0: devices behind bridge are unusable because [bus 05-24] cannot be assigned for them"16:33
tomreynmgedmin: -security has the same version as -updates, and since you should be pulling -security from security.ubuntu.com directly, something must be off on your end16:34
svm_invictvsYeah, I'm reading about what that means TJ-16:34
svm_invictvsSeems to be something to do with PCIe?16:34
TJ-svm_invictvs: these being PCI(e) errors, and the USB controller(s) being PCIe, there is a possibility these are related16:35
svm_invictvsThis kinda makes sense because I switched from all SATA drives to a PCIe HDDs16:35
tomreynmgedmin: this mirror looks out of sync http://lt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/project/trace/?C=M;O=D16:35
mgedminiirc there are four lt mirrors behind round-robin DNS, and I've found at least two of them being variously out of date in the past16:36
TJ-svm_invictvs: "usb usb4: We don't know the algorithms for LPM for this host, disabling LPM"16:37
TJ-svm_invictvs: the most obvious thing I can see is all the USB controllers look to be XHCI (USB3.x) but GRUB only has a EHCI (USB2.x) driver. Despite XHCI controllers supposed to be backwards compatible, in practice we do see a lot of issues with USB2/1.1 devices on USB3 controllers/hubs16:40
tomreynmgedmin: lt.archive.ubuntu.com currently points to ftp.litnet.li, which is supposedly up to date according to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+mirror/ftp.litnet.lt-archive  (maybe my guessting based on the trace directory contents was incorrect - better check the package archive list)16:41
svm_invictvsTJ-, Yeah, which is why I tried plugging the keyboard into the 2.x port and it still did that.16:42
svm_invictvsTJ-, I heard people saying you can fix this by forcing some USB modes in the BIOS but I can't find that anywhere.16:43
TJ-svm_invictvs: the main thing I see though is the current system firmware is many versions out of date. it is v1.20 dated Aug 2019 but latest is v3.2 dated Aug 2021 https://asrock.com/MB/AMD/X570%20Phantom%20Gaming-ITXTB3/index.asp#BIOS16:43
svm_invictvsAnd at this point I'm willing to say it's a minor inconvenience to enter the boot menu to get into Windows.16:43
svm_invictvsTJ-, Yeah. I haven't ever updated the firmware.16:43
TJ-svm_invictvs: "DMI: To Be Filled By O.E.M. To Be Filled By O.E.M./X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3, BIOS P1.20 08/08/2019"16:43
TJ-svm_invictvs: it's one of the things that really needs to be done especially when there are pre-OS issues16:44
svm_invictvsYeah16:44
svm_invictvsI just rebuilt this machine, haha16:44
svm_invictvsI should give the software some love16:44
svm_invictvsI was playing Valheim and streaming. CPU got 96C and the overtemp protection kicked in.16:45

svm_invictvsNew case. New cooler. New fans. New HDDs.16:45
svm_invictvsUpdating firmware makes me nervous because I've bricked a device in my day.16:46

tomreyngrub will be on partition 117:41
ioriaTryingToDualBoot,  mount that on /mnt17:41
leftyfbTryingToDualBoot: windows will never "pass control" to GRUB or any other boot loader. Ubuntu needs to be installed last so that GRUB can be installed properly and be the defacto boot loader which should give you the option of booting to Ubuntu or Windows17:41

strngeletHi all, I have a security issue that started today, not sure if it is bug or if I'm doing something stupid.18:22
tomreynstrngelet: hi there. you'd need to provide more info if you're hoping to get help with this.18:24
strngeletThe problem: When I reboot, gnome logs in a user account automatically, but it is not set to autologin in the GUI or the config file.  Using default config of 20.10 on Intel workstation x86-6418:24
strngeletit is running X11 according to /etc/gdm3/custom.conf18:25
leftyfbstrngelet: is this a new install of 21.10?18:26
leftyfbstrngelet: try it booting without the custom.conf18:26

TryingToDualBoot@ior18:36
TryingToDualBootioria that fix worked, thank you so much. windows still wont boot, but at least I get a grub menu now18:36
TryingToDualBootSo currently investigating using rescatux to fix the windows partition18:36
ioriaTryingToDualBoot,  ok... https://itsfoss.com/no-grub-windows-linux/18:37
TryingToDualBootIm able to see and browse the windows file system from the Ubuntu side, so I guess the windows boot program must be confused about what happened18:37
alkisgI rarely see gdm nowadays, a last try from me: `sudo cat /var/lib/AccountsService/users/$USER` ==> and see if the new gnome decided to store the autologin information in accountservice...18:37
alkisgstrngelet: ^18:37
TryingToDualBootSo grub DOES show up and I can pick windows or linux18:37
TryingToDualBootbut when I pick windows, I get the automatic repair screen and then windows does not start18:38
ioriaTryingToDualBoot,   https://itsfoss.com/no-grub-windows-linux/18:38
alkisgTryingToDualBoot: that's a windows issue from now on; e.g. if you moved or added a partition or looked at windows the wrong way, it'll get mad at you and not start :D18:38
alkisgTryingToDualBoot: sometimes it can be fixed by regenerating the bcd store, other times by trying to boot enough times, other times it just needs a reinstallation even on top of existing data18:39
strngeletalksig: it just gives me the > prompt18:39
TryingToDualBootThat article seems to describe a different problem18:39
alkisgDidn't you say that you get the blue recovery dialog?18:40
TryingToDualBootYeah I get the blue recovery dialog18:40
TryingToDualBootbut I cant use any of the advanced tools because my windows user is not an admin (why not I have no idea why)18:40
alkisg(ignore my last sentence)18:40
TryingToDualBootRescatux seems to be able to promote a windows user to admin though18:40
alkisgstrngelet: without the backticks18:40
TryingToDualBootwhat is the bcd store?18:40
alkisgTryingToDualBoot: the windows boot registry; that's out of topic here though18:41
TryingToDualBootOk yeah I agree this does seem to be a windows problem now18:41
alkisgTryingToDualBoot: you fixed the linux side, now you should go to #windows and ask there for the rest...18:41
TryingToDualBootThough I would argue the ubuntu LTS installer with default options should not cause this problem :P18:41
TryingToDualBootbut I agree we are in windows territory now18:41
strngeletalksig: https://termbin.com/j2hh18:42
leftyfbmind you, if you "fix" the Windows boot loader a certain way, it might override GRUB18:42
leftyfbTryingToDualBoot: also, now that I think about it, is it possible the Windows side is broken because you disabled secureboot?18:42
alkisgstrngelet: yeah it's not there either, dunno then, maybe something dropped something in /usr :)18:43
TryingToDualBootyeah Im still fairly confused about whether secure boot needs to be disabled or not18:43
leftyfbTryingToDualBoot: it's better to keep it disabled for linux distros18:43
TryingToDualBootthe installer asked me for a secure boot password though which I gave it18:43
strngeletalksig: does that imply a virus/malware?18:45
alkisgstrngelet: nah I don't think so, they have nothing to gain by your autologin18:47
strngeletgood point, I guess it's worth filing a bug report then.  Thanks for trying and to you leftybin18:49

sarnolduse htop or top or ps to find out what process is running, keep watching it for a bit to see if tis' the same one or if it changes over time, etc21:47
