RPG_MasterTrying to update to 21.10, but when I run the command in the terminal I get "Upgrades to the development release are only available from the latest supported release."03:24
RPG_MasterAlso find it odd that even though I thought I had fully updated to 21.04, it still says I'm on 20.04 in the info center03:25
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> I recommend following the directions found here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ImpishUpgrades/Kubuntu (re @IrcsomeBot: <RPG_Master> Also find it odd that even though I thought I had fully updated to 21.04, it still says I'm on 20.04 in the info center)03:41
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> This worked for me:  sudo do-release-upgrade -m desktop03:41

I also tried form other user accounts I have o my laptop. All have same problem. I even tried using gdm. Same result. I can ogin using other desktops I have installed like gnome and xfce. Please any suggestions.07:51
iomari891greetings, I suddenly can't login anymore. I'm stuck on sddm login screen. I tried other user accounts I have on my laptop and all have the same issue.08:59
iomari891also, why does startx launch gnome instead of plasma?09:03

iomari891greetings, how cn I reinstall kubuntu without messing with my existing configurations?12:12
alkisgiomari891: if you mean /home/user configuration, then by reinstalling and selecting "yes use the existing partition WITHOUT formatting it", then /home is preserved12:33
alkisgIf you mean "reinstall but preserve /etc configuration", I'm not sure that has any point or if it's possible12:33
alkisgIf you want to purge all gnome related packages and reinstall all kubuntu ones, sure that can be done too12:34
alkisgBut in general, avoid installing multiple desktop environments as this use case isn't very much tested and multiple services may run, or even problems may arise12:35
BluesKajHi folks12:44
iomari891alkisg: understood but I've had gnome and kde installed together for ages and never had an issue. I upgraded to 21.10 ont the 15th and alsohad no issues. But Saturday night, I shut down, went home and when I booted my kachine, Im stuck on the login screen. If I got to tty console and come back to gui, Ihave a black screen with the mouse pointer. I've reinstalled kde-full and still no luck.13:02
iomari891damn typos13:03
alkisgiomari891: you can check your .xsession-errors for possible troubleshooting tips13:05
iomari891alkisg: thanks13:06
alkisgWhile if you want to run a few things manually, you can replace Exec=plasmashell with xterm in /usr/share/xsessions/plasma.desktop (I'm not mate currently I can't check the names exactly)13:06
alkisgThat way when you login you get a plain xterm, and from there you can start running plasmashell and kwin etc etc, so that you see all the messages along with what does what13:06
alkisg*I'm on mate...13:07
BluesKajwonder if gnome using wayland and kde/plasma on xorg could be part of the issue13:09
alkisgTheoretically /usr/share/xsessions are for xorg sessions, all display managers should know that13:10
alkisgThere's another dir for wayland...13:10
alkisgHmm, but if kubuntu adds something in the wayland dir... /me checks...13:10
BluesKajtheory...hmm13:11
iomari891alkisg: btw, there is no plasmashell command.13:28
iomari891forgot to mention that13:29
alkisgYou'll find the exact command in the Exec line13:29
alkisgLet me find it for you13:29
alkisgIt's called startplasma-x1113:30
iomari891ok13:30
alkisgWhile plasmashell IS a command and I think represents the menu etc13:30
alkisgdpkg -S /usr/bin/plasmashell => plasma-workspace13:30
alkisgDo you have the plasma-workspace package installed?13:31
iomari891display is not set or cannot conect to x server13:31
alkisgHow are you running this, from vt2?13:31
iomari891when I run startplasma-x1113:31
alkisgThis was supposed to be run from the xterm13:31
alkisgAfter you modified the Exec line13:31
alkisgAnyway, do you have the plasma-workspace package installed?13:32
iomari891yes. reinstalled it many times13:32
alkisgThen you do have /usr/bin/plasmashell, right?13:32
iomari891I actual reinstalled kde-full13:32
alkisgBecause you said you didn't have that command13:32
alkisgkde-full is a metapackage13:33
iomari891yes, but it installed 700 meg of stuff13:33
iomari891reinstalled13:33
alkisg> Then you do have /usr/bin/plasmashell, right?13:33
alkisgA metapackage may miss recommended packages if you uninstalled them manually before you tried reinstalling the metapackage13:34
iomari891yes I do. You're right13:34
alkisgIt will pull depends:, but not recommends:13:34
alkisgDo you want to pastebin your .xsession-errors?13:34
alkisgIf you see sensitive stuff, remove it; although there shouldn't be...13:35
iomari891That may be difficult. I'm working from the terminal no gui remember.13:35
iomari891letme see if I can get it to my phone first then maybe I can mail it to you.13:37
iomari891alkisg: ok, how can I send it? It's phone phone now.13:47
alkisgcat ~/.xsession-errors | nc termbin.com 999913:57
alkisgsudo nano /usr/share/xsessions/plasma.desktop14:00
alkisgReplace Exec=/usr/bin/startplasma-x11 with xterm14:00
alkisgAnd you'll be able to login in a plain xterm14:00
alkisgFrom there, you can try to run plasmashell etc14:00
alkisgAnd see where it doesn't make it14:00
iomari891alkisg: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/HKDzfsGDFZ14:05
iomari891alkisg: when I run plasmashell from xterm, it reports that dbus is incorrectly setup.14:13
alkisgThat's not a problem, you should have ran dbus first. It does run though, right?14:28
* alkisg is doing something atm, I'll have a look at xsession-errors a bit later...14:29
alkisgiomari891:  run this: sudo ln -s /etc/machine-id /var/lib/dbus/machine-id14:34
alkisgAnd, what's the output of: ls -l /etc/machine-id14:35
iomari891alkisg: thanks for al your help. This solved it: sudo dbus-uuidgen --ensure14:43

SazpaimonI'm looking for a remote desktop solution that works about as good as windows RDP. Specifically I'm looking for: 1. Sound redirection 2. Matching the resolution of the client machine 3. Connecting to the main console session (not requiring logging out). I've tried a few different things but none of them really do any of those things well, if at all. Any suggestions?17:48
alkisgxfreerdp is as close as you can get. Or go commercial, anydesk, teamviewer etc18:07
