[01:46] how do i run X-server on a remote server and direct its output to my mac? (firefox for example) [01:46] ssh X11 forwarding is great if you want a single client. try ssh -X remotehost firefox and see how it goes [02:07] sarnold: thanks. Let me try that - I think I got into trouble with that last time. [02:09] sarnold: Error: no DISPLAY environment variable specified [02:10] pycurious: hmm are you running an X server locally on your mac? [02:10] sarnold: on the server - i do see /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg :0 running [02:10] sarnold: I am not - how can i do that? [02:18] sarnold: I installed XQuartz. Now I get an xterm from which i can fire the ssh. When I run firefox from remote I get "X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication" [02:19] pycurious: ah! woo. progress. :) bummer it's stuck again already :( [02:22] pycurious: usually ssh -X does some magic to provide the remote process with XAUTHORITY details, so it can connect to the local server; it's possible Xquartz's startup process doesn't generate the X11 authentication tokens. Normally they're stored in ~/.Xauthority on linux systems.. [02:24] another error while logging in -> /usr/bin/xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/ubuntu/.Xauthority [02:24] hah. okay. maybe this route isn't great. [02:25] loads of folks use vnc or the other windows-oriented desktop thingy [02:25] I never got the hang of those, but vnc might be easier than getting X working on macos [02:27] sarnold: it worked :) [02:29] pycurious: ooh, which thing worked? :) [02:29] its crazy slow though. Even when I try to run firefox from a local network ubuntu box. [02:29] ugh :( [02:29] sarnold: A few tweaks. Had to remove .Xauthority* on the linux box [02:29] I haven't actually used ssh -X in two decades. it was a great way to run netscape on a machine with more memory all to itself.. [02:30] seems like the netscape days are back. Firefox is exactly behaving like that :) [02:30] except it is not 1996. [02:34] hehehe [02:43] can't do hardware acceleration with remote X... [03:18] JanC: Does remotedesktop do hardware accel? [03:44] most of all it uses compression & other techniques to limit the amounts of data that need to go over the network... [17:49] yes, seems to be because virtualbox makes the disk defaults too small [17:49] works when you make them larger [18:12] Also why are there files missing from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/18.04.5/release/SHA256SUMS [18:12] oh because you removed them [18:12] hmmm === genii is now known as genii-core
