duikWhen I want to install some flatpak packages, it says that my flatpak version is too old. Is there a way to fix this?00:19
tomreynduik: i think there's a PPA providing newer flatpak versions, have you looked for that, yet?00:27
tomreynwhich ubuntu release are you using?00:27
duik20.0400:27
duiktomeryn: do you know where I can find that?00:28
tomreynhttps://launchpad.net/~alexlarsson/+archive/ubuntu/flatpak?field.series_filter=focal looks like it00:28
Bashing-om!info flatpak focal00:29
duikDo I have to uninstall flatpak before adding the PPA?00:29
ubottuflatpak (1.6.5-0ubuntu0.3, focal): Application deployment framework for desktop apps. In component universe, is optional. Built by flatpak. Size 1,044 kB / 5,590 kB. (Only available for linux-any.)00:29
tomreynduik: it might be good, in case there is no clean upgrade path00:30
duikOk thanks00:30
tomreynso you don't have to, but personally i would, unless that would make things a lot more complex00:30

Guest78Hi. Could someone please give me the default iptables on Ubuntu 20.04 (not sure if there's a rules file in /etc/iptables you could paste me, if not try "iptables --list")? My cloud provider gave me a large-ish default iptables list, and I want to know what I can delete safely to have the same system as I would on a stock Ubuntu install, without01:56
Guest78deleting their security rules.01:56
tomreyn^ solved in #linux, there are none02:04

RumenThi sis DELL T5400 - there is almost nothing to change10:06
KBarStill, most BIOS will allow you to set fans to be always enabled or at their full speed.10:07
RumenEverything is OK until you start video (even youtube) and 15 minutes later start increase and does not decrease anymore until reboot10:10

Rumenhttps://pastebin.com/48R2XuLA10:20
lotuspsychjeRumen: on 17/11 new kernel version, could it be from then?10:22

RumenSo the solution - wait for a new kernel release?10:23
KBarRumen, quite the opposite. Try choosing the older version during GRUB.10:23
RumenOK I will need to reboot10:24

Slartibartminimum version required: iwlwifi-so-a0-hr-b0-39, maximum version supported: iwlwifi-so-a0-hr-b0-63. Interesting version numbering scheme :-p. Seems to be about linux-firmware? Have never checked the version of that one before, but I guess I'll do that now..16:13

jeremy31Slartibart: It might have been in Driver Manager16:33
ioriaSlartibart, and (sometime, iirc) dmesg itself should notify you with the firmware git link ("check git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git")16:35

jeremy31ffs: you will have to change the sources as the repos have shut down20:13
jeremy31ffs: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades20:14
cbreakffs: is it worth the trouble compared to just a fresh install?20:17
ffsprobably not20:18
ffsIn that case, do people have suggestions/pointers on how to install ubuntu alongside windows on a machine with uefi and secure boot? Right now my method to switch operating systems (eg to linux) is to open the bios, disable secure boot, and switch uefi to legacy. Which is quite annoying.20:22
EtherManIs the glusterfs version in 20.04 or in PPA still supported and at least security fixes being backported from upstreams? (Since as of the 16th nov, Glusterfs 10.0 was released, which removes glusterfs8, which is currently the ppa version, from their patch schedule).20:22
tomreynffs: install either in uefi mode. depending on how well done the 'bios' is, you might still need to disable secureboot to install or keep using ubuntu, but usually it will work. you ewould be able to switch between ubuntu and windows booting from the 'bios' provided boot menu20:24
rtggffs keeping secure boot disabled and using GRUB to load both OS's ?20:25
tomreynEtherMan: glusterfs is in the universe repository, so it has community support level only. PPAs have their own support policies (or none).20:27
marc_The problem with the write speeds on Ubuntu i found this article with no fix but shows what i am on about  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1277708/why-are-writes-on-an-nvme-slower-under-linux-than-under-windows20:29
ffsThis might be getting off topic, but windows crashes when i try to boot in legacy mode. @tomreyn , rtgg20:30
ffsThat's why I switch each time.20:30
EtherMantomreyn: Right, and I'm asking if that support means at least security patches will be backported. 20.04 being stable, I'd assume that's not going to be updated and PPA hasn't even updated to 9 yet so I'll assume that too is going to be a while before that's going to be updated. So unless at least security fixes are backported, it's not like it's in a safely usable state right now.20:30
tomreynffs: i did not suggest to do so, though20:30
ffsOh, you're suggesting install both in uefi?20:31
tomreynffs: my understanding is that you can boot windows in uefi mode (after all, secureboot would not be available otherwise). you're considering to reinstall ubuntu. i'm suggesting that you install ubuntu in uefi mode as well.20:31
cbreakffs: I don't see a reason to use legacy bios mode20:31
ffsI see. The word either mislead me.20:32
ffsCool. Will try it.20:32
cbreakyou can use something like refind if you don't want to switch via the UEFI boot chooser or boot windows via grub, both of which should also work20:32
cbreakat least without secure boot20:33
ffsgrub is fine for me20:33
tomreynEtherMan: there is https://launchpad.net/~gluster/+archive/ubuntu/glusterfs-10?field.series_filter=focal - I do not know its status20:33
spqo/ I got a problem: one of 2ssds in my laptop seems to have broken in some way, whenever problematic blocks are read, the device hangs and after a while the device disappears. On the bad disk, i have a LVM PV and a single lv was on that disk, using pvmove I was able to move most blocks to the other disk, now I'm however stuck, as soon as I luksopen20:34
spqthe 2nd disk, LVM detects the pvs and starts syncing the pvmove partition and immediately breaks the bad disk, previously I could pvmove --abort quick enough, got an idea how to fix this?20:34
EtherMantomreyn: Oh I wasn't aware of that one. When I googled I only got the v8 one. Cheers :)20:35
tomreynffs: thanks for reminding me, i really need to stop this ambigious word.20:35
tomreyn*using20:35
tomreynEtherMan: see also https://launchpad.net/~gluster20:36
cbreakspq: physical removal is not an option?20:38
spqcbreak: not sure what you mean, it is an option sure20:39
tomreynspq: you're saying you were able to move (using pvmove) *most* blocks from the bad to the good ssd. i assume this means that *some* blocks are still (attempted to be) read from the broken ssd?20:39
spqYes, using pvmove bad_dev:extent_range good_dev20:40
ffsGithub is having problems so I can't download/install etcher. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯20:40
cbreakffs: ubuntu has a startup disk creator program too20:41
rtgg^20:41
cbreakusb-creator-kde or usb-creator-gtk I think20:41
rtggdd too20:42
cbreakthe kde one worked for me (as far as not giving an error), but I've not yet tried the resulting USB :)20:42
spqThe issue is that the last of these pvmove broke and after reboot(to get the dev back) and luksopen it immediately starts to sync, i want it to not sync so I can abort that pvmove20:42
tomreynspq: i guess that if those remaining blocks can no longer be read then your best option may be to try to ddrescue or similar the full bad ssd to an image and just force it's removal off the VG20:43
cbreakwill it still try to sync if the ssd is physically removed?20:43
ffsCool. Got it.20:43
spqCbreak: No, but before I luksopen it also doesn't sync (as the PV is on the LUKS)20:44
tomreynffs: according to the man page, you can also request to abort the pvmove operation.20:45
tomreyn--abort20:46
spqYes but it fails before the underlying pvs are there, and when I make them available, the sync starts immediately20:47
spqSo I have no time to abort20:47
spq_*switching to second laptop instead of phone*20:48
ffsHmm, how suspicious should I be when it takes about 500ms to allegedly write the entire image to the drive.20:48
tomreynhmm, i was hoping this would call off the 'sync'20:48
=== spq is now known as spq_phone

=== justache is now known as justBOOMER
tomreynspq: opps, right, this was to you20:51
spqtomreyn: if so, yes - it aborts the move and stops the sync, however it refuses to work until the underlying pv's are available, and making them available starts the sync which breaks too fast20:52
ffsLOL it boots what in the... apparently my usb drive went into God mode for a second.20:52
longus_catusSo I figured it out.  Gnome under Xorg and Wayland act differently in a strange way.  It's like the Xorg one has extra window decorations enabled.20:53
spqso what i need is something that disables lvm's sync'ing system wide or something to disable the pvmove while only 1/2 pvs are present20:54
longus_catusEasiest app that demonstrates this is the File manager app.  Or the Terminal20:54
longus_catusUnder Xorg, the File manager will have two minimize, two maximize, and two close buttons, along with an extra window decoration along the top that duplicates some of what the one under does.  But under Wayland, it looks normal.  This is under Ubuntu 21.1020:59
tomreynspq: you can define a whitelist of volumes (this can include VG names) to be auto-activated (when all member PVs are present), as auto_activation_volume_list in lvm(local).conf. if undefined, auto-activation takes place for all volumes. maybe this is actually the automation you're seeing.21:10
tomreyn(I do not know what you see, you have not shred output.)21:11
tomreynneither shred not shared ;)21:11
spqthanks, ill look into this, maybe a non activated lv does not sync21:12

crorafii  linux-image-5.4.0-90-generic                                5.4.0-90.101                                amd64        Signed kernel image generic21:57
longus_catusAh, pasting a bunch of stuff isn't a good idea.  I suppose 5.10.0-1051 is the newest of the 5 that were printed.  Aren't they ordered in the grub menu?  You can use that for reference too.21:58
crorafOK. You suppose, but you dont know?22:00
crorafYou see that these kernels have the suffix -oem22:00
crorafSo the uestion is now which are the latest and how can I know or get the latest22:01
longus_catusThe -oem has to do with certain machines eligible for it.  The details are at https://ubuntu.com/kernel/lifecycle.  Use uname -r to find the kernel you're currently running.  I think you can do the math to figure out the kernel prior, but I don't really suppose you need linux-image-5.4.0-45-generic but I might keep the latest 5.4.x-generic in22:07
longus_catuscase I run into bugs and want to boot previous versions of the kernel.22:07
longus_catusI don't know how to tell what the latest one is other than whatever is available with apt update/upgrade or however you manage it.22:09
