jkkis there some reason for ubuntu kernel to use blobs instead of open source drivers?04:09
guivercjkk, some hardware companies will only provide closed-source or binary blobs (kernel modules etc) thus why non-free/restricted exists.04:12
CRCinAUso dumb question that I can't find straight away in google..... How can I ignore a certain subset of packages on a specific repo?04:13
jkkguiverc, Trisquel kernel is completely open source04:13
guivercand many features won't boot/use it fully; however this is a Ubuntu room, not a trisqual support room04:15
guivercjkk, please use #ubuntu-offtopic if you want to talk general GNU/Linux and not Ubuntu04:15
jkkok04:16
jkkmy question was - surely ubuntu been such a big distro can develop it's drivers too?04:17
guivercUbuntu has install options that use non-free (debian terminology here) only.  It's not the default, but users can opt to install with it (but not for all ISOs I suspect)04:19
guivercjkk, not many use it; thus the question asking who does - ie. https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/anyone-still-use-the-free-software-only-install-option/843104:20
Bashing-omjkk: Ubuntu maintains a close working relationship with OEM. For the instance of Nvidia; see: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-desktop/2015-August/004693.html . Also applies with AMD.04:21

indyZI've noticed that in Ubuntu 18.04, gwenview shows thumbnails for video files. In Ubuntu 20.04, it doesn't. Instead it only shows thumbnails for video files. I tried installing some packages like libffmpegthumbnailer4v5, but that didn't help. Am I missing a package or something?06:37
indyZI hate losing useful features like that.06:38
indyZer. Instead it only shows thumbnails for picture files, I mean, in ubuntu 20.04. In 18.04 it showed them for both pictures and videos.06:39
indyZApparently in Fedora someone fixed the issue by installing "kffmpegthumbnailer," but I don't see that package in ubuntu.06:43
indyZActually, I take that back. I see the package is in 18.04, but not 20.04. Well, that sucks.06:45

MaxiiHi, I recently installed ubuntu 21.04 (after breaking an 18.04 install), and ever since, my laptop seems to run the fan on max, even when I have everything closed and am not doing anything. Interestingly, when I run a bootable USB of 21.04, the laptop fan seems totally fine. The fans also don't do this when on my windows partition. Because of this,16:39
MaxiiI'd rule out hardware issues and say its a software issue. Any help on how I could diagnose/fix this would be appreciated.16:39

KBarMaxii, can you launch System Monitor and see if there's some unusual or suspicious activity?17:12
KBarAlso, are you sure that your laptop is not overheated?17:13

KBarMaxii, is it at full speed now?17:15
KBarMaxii, if so, what does the following output? `sensors`17:16
MaxiiI'm not sure if its at "full" speed, but it is much higher than it ever was before I installed 21.04, and is annoyingly loud17:17

MaxiiKBar, I'm not sure how to do that, I'll google it but it'll take a sec17:32

KBarMaxii, unfortunately, I don't own an Nvidia card and can't help you further. The most likely culprit is either PRIME settings or some pesky process in the background. You can try creating a new user and see if the fan runs fine.17:36

KBarNo problem, Maxii. You can resort to more radical measures later, once you've eliminated other options.:)17:40
MaxiiAbsolutely! I'll try the nvidia thing but I'm skeptical just because the thing runs fine when I boot from usb17:41
MaxiiHi, I was on here previously about an issue with my laptop fans, they are running very fast and loud, even at very low load and this only happens on the new 21.04 install (but, weirdly, not the bootable usb version).18:18
MaxiiI tried looking into the nvidia drivers, but its inconclusive so far. I've tried installing thinkfan but it did nothing18:18
MaxiiCould it be the proprietary drivers? I clicked during install the option to add proprietary drivers, maybe they aren't used when only loading the bootable usb18:22
KBarMaxii, IIRC, yes. Only the integrated graphics card is used during a Live session.18:23
KBarMaxii, `nvidia-smi`18:23

MaxiiOk, I will. But, do you have any idea what happened? in additional drivers, everything else is grayed out and the option checked is "continue using a manually installed driver"18:58
MaxiiI guess I should restart after installing those?18:59
KBarMaxii, yes, not a bad idea.19:00
KBarMaxii, for your question: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1237590/not-able-to-change-the-nvidia-driver-in-ubuntu-20-0419:01
Maxiiahh, excellent!19:03
KBarMaxii, there is also a tool called vga_switcheroo on Ubuntu, but I have no idea how to use it. Maybe someone smarter can help you if we can't get this Nvidia Settings app to work.19:05
MaxiiKBar, that did something but the fan is still running more than usual, this is the output of nvidia-smi: termbin.com/1p1919:07
Maxii"that" = installing those two things and restarting19:08
KBarMaxii, so it runs a bit slower now?19:08

KBarlets goooo19:56

KBarWe're getting closer!20:02
KBarIn the meantime, watch this beautiful video of Linus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYWzMvlj2RQ20:03
MaxiiSo, maybe I should try switching back to NVIDIA On-Demand ? I have no idea, but will the intel graphics display movies (video file through vlc) to me at a worse quality (was going to watch one later tonight)?20:03
Maxiihahaa, i think i know what that is without clicking on it20:03
Maxiiyup, i was right :)20:03
KBarMaxii, I think switching can be done on the fly.20:03
KBarMaxii, you can always choose Performance whenever needed.20:03
KBarMaxii, try fiddling around a bit and choose whatever you're comfortable with, both in terms of fan noise and performance.20:04
Maxiiso, to switch profiles, it always asks for a system restart20:05
KBarReally? That feels bad. Hold on.20:05
KBarMaxii, you can try this GNOME extension: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1275/prime-indicator/20:06
KBarMaxii, is the fan quiet now?20:07
MaxiiI think now that it is running on the intel option, it is "normal quiet", (although tbh, i haven;t had this at normal fan speed for so long its hard to tell)20:08
KBarHaha. Glad we sorted this out20:08
MaxiiYes, me too, thank you sooooo much, its been bugging me for ages having this sat in a room seeding and having the fan obnoxiously loud when I wake up in the morning20:09
MaxiiYour help means I can drink my morning tea in peace and quiet!!!20:09
KBarYep. Remember, it's always NVIDIA!!!20:09
KBarMaxii, very well!20:10
MaxiiKBar makes sense why I've never had such problems on my desktop, i use amd graphics20:13
Maxiiok, so I switched back to nvidia on-demand and now the fan is running a bit higher again, so I guess I'll switch to intel graphics to have the fan calm itself down, I'm assuming it literally only affects things if I'm gaming right?20:14

KBarMaxii, that GNOME extension looks promising. Maybe try it one day.20:21
MaxiiI have installed it, it seems to automatically log me out, and then when I log back in again, the new PRIME setting is selected. not as annoying as a restart, but close. No matter though, I almost never do graphically demanding things on linux, only windows partition where nvidia card is probably enabled anyways and I don't care because I only use20:23
Maxiiit for gaming (which on my laptop is never anyway)20:23
KBarAh, I see.20:24

ahcThe dir /var/log has syslogs.gz going back a little. I'm hoping to find how I installed something a year ago. Are there logs anywhere going all the way back?20:36
samlamammaMy nvidia drivers broke after updating to 21.10 (or something). At first nomodeset worked for booting, at which point I uninstalled old drivers (apt autoremove) and then installed nvidia 470 through the GUY. now not even nomodeset will work. Can still use recovery boot though! Any hints on what I can do?20:40

zenofI'm installing 21.10 , unchecked the download updates during install thing, but the installer _does_ download updates. anyone who can confirm that, and, how can I prevent this in future?21:58
Guest50not sure, 21.04 worked fine22:04
Guest50are You on some bleeding edge asf22:04
Guest50?22:04
Guest50(hardware wise)22:05
Kilroywhat Guest5022:06

Guest50yeah he coulda just turned off internet22:07
Guest50I am just saying that 21.10 is not LTS22:07
Guest50those things happen22:07
Kilroynor is 21.0422:08
Kilroy20.04 is a LTS22:08
Guest50ah right22:08
Guest50well but 20.04 does not really come with nvidia prepared22:09
Guest50for some new devices22:09
KilroyI use ubuntu 20.04 on my servers/ and brothers hackintosh22:09
Guest5021.04 is real stable for me here22:09
zenofdon't think I'm "asf" on the bleeding edge with a regular release like 21.10 ...22:11
Guest50are You arguing this because You tried arch22:11
zenofand for sure I would expect the installer not to download any updates if I'm explicitly offered to opt out of  this.22:13

Guest50go report bug22:13
Guest50https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/report-ubuntu-bug.html.en22:14
Guest50any non LTS that is 2 releases from it, is considered bleeding edge22:14
Guest50with that I meant hardware bleeding edge22:15
Guest50like some new gpu or cpu22:15
zenofneither nor, but what would my brand new hardware have to do with the installer downloading updates!?22:16
Kilroyit does not zenof22:16
Kilroyzenof does the computer need internet/ or how good are you at cli22:16
Guest50well certain new releases have better new hardware support for them22:17

zenofKilroy: (of course) it does need internet22:26
zenofat least in my use case, still I don't get why this would be important to the question whether to download updates during installation or not.22:28
Exterminadorhello guys. not sure if the right place but for some reason, `snap install name<tab>` doesn't autocomplete22:31
RalapapaHi guys, i just installed Ubuntu 21.10 on a laptop with Ryzen 4 4600H and i have no audio (shows dummy audio)22:32
RalapapaRyzen 5 4600H :-)22:32
zenofExterminador: release and shell?22:32
RalapapaIs audio supposed to work yet with the Ryzen 5 4600H?22:33
Ralapapalspci gives me "03:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Renoir Radeon High Definition Audio Controller22:33
Ralapapa"22:33
Exterminadorzenof: Ubuntu 20.04 and bash shell. output of env: https://paste.debian.net/1221279/22:34
zenofRalapapa: output of 'pactl list sinks short' ?22:35
Exterminador(since apparently paste.ubuntu.com needs people to login)22:35
Ralapapazenof 0    auto_null    module-null-sink.c    s16le 2ch 44100Hz    SUSPENDED22:36
Ralapapai found something on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AMDGPU-Driver "The open source AMDGPU driver does not support (for now) the HDMI audio. To solve this problem, you can install che "hybrid" AMDGPU-Pro driver from AMD"22:37
zenofExterminador: okay, can't reproduce that, sorry. completion on other things works?22:43
Exterminadorzenof: it does, but not on snaps apparently. e.g. I should just `snap install certb<tab>` and it should autocomplete to certbot22:45
Exterminadorit's really weird though22:45
Exterminadorneed to sleep. laters23:15
