tomreynheller: hmm, if you don't have /etc/default/grub this suggests that grub is not installed, which suggests your server is booting some other way - which I don't think Ubuntu would do (but a derivative might). I this a dedicated server, or a virtual (private) server, and if so, does it have its own kernel?02:41
tomreynActually, the system architecture would also matter in terms of how it boots. ARM systems won't boot with grub.02:41
sarnoldI think grub is only used on platforms that smell kinda like intel02:41
mwhudsonsarnold: arm64 boots with grub too02:50
mwhudsonwell, sometimes02:50
sarnoldmwhudson: lol classic arm02:50
mwhudsonservers do02:50
sarnoldno two are alike..02:50
sarnoldmwhudson: is that the ones with an efi implementation of some sort? or is that something else?02:51
mwhudsonsarnold: yeah i was thinking of servers, those mostly boot efi -> grub02:52
mwhudsonyou can boot via tianocore on rpi4 i think?02:52
mwhudsonwell servers or, uh, network cards? https://www.mellanox.com/products/BlueField-SmartNIC-Ethernet02:54
tomreynso... like intel02:54
mwhudsonhttps://imgflip.com/i/5wap8l02:55
mwhudsonwell if you define "smells like intel" as "boots via uefi" then well02:56
sarnoldI was thinking just amd64 and i386 kinds of things, and hadn't expected any arms of any sort to boot with grub, but it does sound vaguely familiar once you mention it02:57
tomreynthe number of compoentns which are *not* self-aware and make their own decisions is definitely going down.02:57
sarnoldmwhudson: lol02:57
mwhudsontomreyn: for sure02:58
mwhudsontomreyn: how many arm cores are in my (intel ;-p) laptop i wonder?02:58
mwhudsonsarnold: anyway yes, ppc64el systems boot via prep and s390x systems boot ... differently02:59
mwhudsoni'm sure you can somehow boot s390x via tianocore and grub if you're determined enough03:00
tomreynmwhudson: originally 7, but 3 were added on the supply chain03:02
mwhudsonalso it looks like risc v servers will be uefi + grub too fwiw03:03
mwhudsontomreyn: heh03:03
mwhudsoni bet it's more than 703:03
tomreynmaybe we just misunderstood the concept and it's really a whac-an-arm game03:05
tomreynrisc v with uefi, does this mean secure boot?03:05
tomreynor rather ... mandatorily closed firmware03:06
mwhudsoni don't know03:06
mwhudsonit's not very obvious who would handle signing and such03:07
tomreynwell, let's hope for the best.03:12

tomreynmicrosoft being the best, of course03:12

iceyhey jamespage, would you mind looking at the focal branch in https://code.launchpad.net/~chris.macnaughton/ubuntu/+source/ceph/+git/ceph for sponsoring? it's built on many arch's at https://launchpad.net/~chris.macnaughton/+archive/ubuntu/ceph-octopus/+packages08:00
hellersoo lets try again. how to check if my network is okay?08:28
hellerseems like ipv6 is disabled with the sysctl -w commands08:33
hellerbut when i reboot, it always comes bask08:41
hellerback*08:41
hellerah, had to add the /etc/init.d/procps restart in /etc/rc.local08:45
hellerwht is procps?08:45
tomreynit says on its second line09:03
tomreynand you'd configure sysctl settings in /etc/sysctl.conf.d/ to make them permanent09:04
tomreynno need to have / edit /etc/rc.local for this09:04
hellerIt says nothing about conf.d09:11
tomreynheller: sorry, it's /etc/sysctl.d/09:32
hellerguide says etc/rc.local? :p09:43
hellerguide says "One method to make this option persist is modifying /etc/sysctl.conf"09:47

xnoxmwhudson:  so s390x cannot do tianocore+grub, but what suse do is this => normal looking zipl + kernel + initrd => which contains grub-emu and then does grub-emu based boot off the hard drives.14:00
xnoxwhich imho is slow and borderline insane.14:00
xnoxbut it does give the end user / sysadmin the same experience, i.e. update-grub to change kernel cmdline, etc.14:01
