Guest_BedroomAny ideas how to fix the "restart required for updates" message to stop appearing?00:25

keithzgHmm ever since I upgraded to 21.10 it seems like intermittently my sound on my USB soundcard (a Scarlett 2i2, not the current USB-C model) after some time or some other trigger gets pitched down, haven't figured out how to fix it other than by rebooting and very unclear what's causing it.02:48

IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> 21.10 is using pipewire by default and pipewire experiencing a few "growing pains".  You might want to try the pipewire ppa: https://launchpad.net/~pipewire-debian/+archive/ubuntu/pipewire-upstream04:22
keithzgMan, and PulseAudio wasn't even as good as its forerunners yet, and we're already trying to replace it again? :P04:29
keithzgIf Pipewire might be the problem, I'm less inclined to install some random experimental packages and more inclined to just yank it out (like I had to do for years with PulseAudio to get some of my systems to be able to do any non-crackly sound input)04:30
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Yes, you can uninstall pipewire and which may fix the problem.... I had to do uninstall on 21.04 to fix a bluetooth headset connection issue.  21.10 is hit and miss as new pipewire version are released....04:32
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> As of now, zoom is not working with pipewire on 21.10, but 22.04 alpha  has new libraries and zoom is working on it using my bt headset04:33
keithzgHmm I might try manually forcing the Pipewire sample rate to 192000 first, see if that does it (it sure does seem like the problem is the wrong sample rate somehow).04:45
keithzgI suppose I should maybe concentrate more on making SDDM work upon boot without needing to stop and start the service manually, but that's honestly a less vexing problem haha04:45
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> How did SDDM break?04:46
keithzgWell, upon boot, no video signal is actually sent on VT1. The SDDM service log doesn't list any complaints, if I manually stop the service and start it up again the log looks the same as it does when it autostarts on boot but now it actually sends a video signal :P04:48
keithzgThis started after the upgrade to 21.10.04:48
keithzg(I just switch to VT3 or whatever, log in, restart the service, et voila)04:49
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Have you already tried something like "sudo dpkg-reconfigure sddm" ?04:50
keithzgNope, just did that now and it just ran without comment, exiting back to the prompt with nary a note!04:51
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Do you have this file: /etc/sddm.conf ?04:53
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> If so, is it empty?04:53
keithzgNope, it has two lines in it: [Theme] CursorTheme=breeze_cursors04:53
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Mine has the following:04:54
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> [Autologin]04:54
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> User=darin04:54
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Session=plasma.desktop04:54
keithzgYeah I don't have autologin set up so unsurprisingly mine lacks those lines :D04:54
keithzg(There's also a presumably distro-provided kde_settings.conf in /etc/sddm.conf.d)04:55
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> I setup my desktop to auto login.  My laptop does not auto login and does not have the sddm.conf file.04:56
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> I am just trying to figure out why SDDM is failing on your box.04:56
keithzgSeems like it might be worth me trying to temporarily wipe out /etc/sddm.conf and see how that goes.04:57
keithzgSo weird that it doesn't work on boot, but *does* work when I manually restart the service!04:58
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> agreed04:58
keithzgGonna reboot now, curious to see how the SDDM conf removal and the PipeWire sample rate change go (although for the latter problem, since issues don't seem to present at once, I might be in for a long wait to see if it worked; on the other hand if it breaks something I might know *that* immediately hehe)05:12
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> I like your attitude :)05:12
keithzgWell, rebooting (although I'm gonna make a note to check a cold boot too later) seems a rousing success with /etc/sddm.conf gone, SDDM starts up just fine! And audio output isn't immediately borked at least.05:17
keithzgThanks for the help, DarinMiller :)05:17
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> \o/ yay!05:20

Guest77Hi all. How I can stream my laptop screen to my smart TV without cables nor adapters? Is this even possible on Kubuntu 20.04?10:54
BluesKajHi folks13:47
gnarbarianhey quick question why is the 21.04 image missing? https://kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/15:34
gnarbarianI found one on ubuntu.com for kubuntu 21.04 but now I'm concerned that it was removed from kubuntu.org for a reason15:34
alkisggnarbarian: https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/21.04/release/15:40
gnarbarianyep thanks alkisg. but I guess I'm more wondering why it was removed from kubuntu.org mirrors. are you guys aware of any issues with the release?15:41
Maikgnarbarian: 21.04 will go EOL in January anyway so why bother with it?15:41
gnarbarianahh I didn't know that. I figured it was a LTS but I guess those are less frequent now15:42
alkisggnarbarian: EOL versions are removed from the mirrors and are hosted in different servers15:42
Maikgnarbarian: it's just a short term release, ubuntu doesn't even show 21.0415:42
gnarbarianok that all makes sense then15:42
alkisgThere's no need to waste the space of hundreds of universities etc with obsolete versions15:42
alkisgLTS are every 2 years. 20.04, 22.04 etc15:42
Maikgnarbarian: 20.04 is a LTS and the next LTS is 22.04 coming in april15:42
alkisgBeen that way since the beginning15:42
Maikyep15:43
gnarbarianI've been using ubuntu since 06 I thought all .04 were LTS releases until somewhat recently15:43
alkisgNo, only even years15:44
alkisg8.04, 10.04, 12.04 etc etc15:44
Maik!LTS15:44
ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions are supported for 5 years on the desktop and server. The latest LTS version of Ubuntu is !Focal (Focal Fossa 20.04). Ubuntu !flavors may have different support durations, check their release notes for information.15:44
gnarbarianlol this feels like some Mandela effect shit for me. but I believe you guys15:45
Maikhttps://ubuntu.com/blog/what-is-an-ubuntu-lts-release15:45
gnarbariananyone on 22.04 yet?15:46
Maikit's in development so not me15:46
Maikkeep in mind though that only main Ubuntu LTS is supported for 5 years, all other flavors like Kubuntu only 3 years15:47
alkisgYup, I'm on 22.04. More in #ubuntu-next:libera.chat  !15:48
alkisgAlthough I'm on MATE on 22.04 (I have maaaaany installations...)15:48

IrcsomeBot<bauchhaus> You need either an IRC client for your mobile OS as an app or a web based (and hopefully mobile friendly) IRC Client. Anyone has recommendations? (I don't) (re @eliharriet: How can I enter? There aren’t any link (I’m in my phone now))22:43
