MrMobiushi, i installed ubuntu on my laptop that already had windows and i can choose between the two with grub at start up. id like to totally remove ubuntu since i now have a separate ubuntu machine. i set the BIOS to now use the windows bootloader instead of grub04:36
MrMobiusdo i need to do anything to get rid of grub before i reformat the partition ubuntu is on?04:37
yukiupwell grub is separate from the partition04:47
yukiupyou would reformat the drive to get ride of grub04:47

jmdHow can I create a user with no password?10:38

Maikjmd: what does google say? ;)10:42
KBarjmd: check out this question on AskUbuntu: https://askubuntu.com/questions/281074/can-i-set-my-user-account-to-have-no-password10:43
Aarch64debianhello how do you emulate if a cd/iso is bootable10:45
jmdKBar: Yeah.  It tells me how to create a user without a password.  But it seems that there's some higher level of security that stops such users logging in.10:46
KBarjmd: well, pressing Enter wherever there is a prompt should let the user login. At least, that's the case during a Live session.10:48
KBarSudo will complain though. That's why the answer explains that you also need to edit the sudoers file10:49
jmdNo I always get "Permission denied, please try again."10:50
jmdI'm not worried about sudo10:51
KBarjmd: what exactly do you want to achieve?10:53
KBarAutologin?10:53
jmdNot exactly.  more like non-interactive login10:54
KBarjmd: add your user to the group `nopasswdlogin`10:55
jmdThere is no such group10:56
KBarjmd: create it. https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2019/02/enable-passwordless-login-ubuntu-18-04/10:56
jmdLet me add it and see what happens10:56
KBaryou're gonna have to edit the PAM configs10:57
KBarjmd: you can also just turn the autologin option on...10:58
jmdKBar: How do I do that?10:59
KBarjdm, Settings > user accounts or something similar depending on what DE you're running.11:00
Maikauto login can be set in system settings --> users11:00
jmdI don't do DEs11:00
KBarjmd: https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/user-autologin.html.en11:00

Maikjmd: next time please tell earlier you don't use DE's11:01

KBarjmd: does the file /etc/gdm/custom.conf exist?11:03
jmdKBar: no11:03
KBarjmd: create it...11:05
KBarand add those lines11:05
jmdI really don't think that is going to make any difference but I will do as you say.11:05
jmdgdm is a DE thing isn't it?11:06
jmdNo.  That made no difference.11:07
KBarjmd: I'm confused. Is that Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Server?11:07
Maikgdm = Gnome Display Manager11:08
MaikKBar: as said he doesn't use a DE so it must be a server then11:08
jmdIt's a server11:08
jmd(and before anyone starts lecturing about security, it's disconnected from the world)11:09
KBarjmd: why wouldn't you tell it from the very beginning…11:09
jmdI thought the question was very clear and concise.11:10
jmdWhy does server/desktop DE/no DE make any difference?11:10
Maikjmd: most people suspect you are using Ubuntu Desktop11:11
KBarjmd: `How can I create a user with no password?` is not clear at all. As you saw, there are tons of methods if you have GUI installed.11:11
Maiksince you didn't mention any of that info it went sideways11:11
KBarDon't just assume people possess telepathic abilities.11:11
* Maik doesn't have a crystal ball11:11
KBarjmd: try this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/getty#Automatic_login_to_virtual_console11:11
Maik<jmd> Why does server/desktop DE/no DE make any difference? --- it does in how to provide support...11:13
jmdWell seeing as you are wanting the minutae of detail.  I am loging in over ssh and not a virtual console.  But so as not to confuse people let us just assume that I want a method that will work for all methods of loging in: ssh/console/getty/gdm ....11:14
akikjmd: "sudo passwd -d username" removes the password11:14
jmdakik: Yes.  I have done that.11:15
jmdBut as I said earlier, it seems that there is some global security setting which prevents such users logging in.11:15
akikjmd: oh sorry i tested that on fedora, not ubuntu11:28

krissternDid you remember to do apt update as well?18:17
maxzor_apt install --fix-broken equals to the same outcome18:18

krissternYup, I do18:29
krissternDo you still remember where you got your image?18:30
PhotonuxI use the 5.13.0-19-generic kernel in the daily build of Ubuntu (22.04). Sudo apt update will do. You can leave ´get´ away ;-)18:30
krissternYeah, I like apt-get more for some funny reason...18:30
Photonuxsudo apt update for example in this case ;-)18:30
krissternSometimes I do use apt only18:31
maxzorI got my image from ubuntu a few years ago18:31

lotuspsychjeprimejade: i think lubuntu 20.04 is lxqt now, might give issues to lts upgrade from bionic19:29
krissternmaxzor_: Guix surely looks cool though19:31
