[08:35] today's the day that people remember that curlywurly still exist as they open their first selction box of crimbo :-P [09:53] Today is the day that I've already accumulated 8hrs of on-call overtime [09:53] And now back to bed [10:05] Hey everyone [10:05] heyhey [11:53] \o [11:53] 27 mins to the James Webb launch - https://youtu.be/7nT7JGZMbtM [12:20] https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/ESA_Web_TV James Webb launch T-30s [15:34] And I missed it. I set an alarm but sleepy dave turned it off before awake dave could get out of bed. [15:36] When you think of spaceflight, you don't think of France. [16:28] ESA have been around doing Ariane for a long tiem [16:29] very boring, very unexciting, good science [16:30] and they're doing a bit of a shakeup next year to put a reuseable rocket on the table aiui [16:34] * penguin42 is now out of crumpets [16:35] * zxmpi contacts french air force and orders an airdrop of croissants [16:36] that'll do [16:38] no chocolatines? .. you may know it as pain aux chocolate [16:38] also, might as well throw in some cheese croissants [16:38] aldi was all out [16:39] davef: I'll take the pain aux chocolate but you can keep the cheese thanks [16:40] they also do almond here, as well as raspberry .. all good [16:40] waiting for the wensleydale when wallace and grommit come on? :-) [16:40] watched 'a grand day out' last night with the kids [16:46] davef: We get ones with sultanas [16:46] (wound the other way, thin/flat) [20:42] yay, a vSphere cluster is down [20:43] It's been eventful. Network went down at one of our APAC datacenters, causing a bunch of our storage to go read-only and VMs to have disk errors. And now I just got paged for a server down, only to find the whole site/cluster is fubar. [20:44] yeh, network taking out storage is a fairly common way to lose a VM cluster [20:44] My favourite one is a server running out of storage, because somebody left a sync & build running over the Christmas weekend. [20:45] I've been paged three times for the same server. yey [20:45] Anyway.. 11hrs on-call pay and counting. [20:45] Plus another 4 on top of that for it being Xmas day [20:47] davef: No redundent networking on the VMs? [20:47] It's supposed to be [20:48] But the network fault for some reason took out the entire storage cluster at the DC [20:48] hmm [20:48] My guess, one of the leaf switches took a shit and wasn't noticed until the other failed. [20:49] yeh that's one to ask the DC wtf they did [20:49] there will be an incident report published shortly. [20:49] reindeer vs network [21:02] should try and make a crimbo cat 6 cable from tinsel :-D [21:03] probably have more success running DSL over it [21:06] DSL does work over wet string.. https://www.revk.uk/2017/12/its-official-adsl-works-over-wet-string.html [21:06] 3.5Mbps, faster than some copper. [21:08] yeh that's what made me think of it [21:14] ok, make it easy then, cat 5 over christmas tree lights :-P [21:14] bonus points if you can tell the segment is busy by the flicker [21:14] suppose I should pre-heat the oven [21:15] I may be alone this evening, but dang it, I'm still gonna have a turkey dinner. [21:16] turkey... pigeon... it all counts :-P
