ubottutusko: End-Of-Life is when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop. Make sure to update Ubuntu before it goes EOL so you get updates promptly for newly-discovered security vulnerabilities. jeffmryou can use nano if you are not familiar with vi.05:25
webchat66I think I figured it out, I was using my partition and not the mounted directory in my home directory05:25

matsaman~/.asoundrc would probably be one way06:07
matsamanif you're using pulseaudio, and you probably are06:07
matsamanyou can maybe do it from the pulseaudio GUI configurator06:07

matsamanreally X11 should not be on a server, so it might not even be installed yet07:03
matsamansince this is a home/media server it's not a big deal07:04
webchat333ok it looks like i have xserver on the machine but its not running and there is no $DISPLAY07:08
matsamanwebchat333: you'll probably want to install a DM, like lightdm07:11
matsamanand configure it to automatically log a user in (thereby skipping the login process)07:11
matsamanyou might have to dpkg-reconfigure lightdm, or set up some different target or config for systemd to have it auto-start07:12
matsamanbut try simply installing it alone first07:12
webchat333ok07:12
matsamanbasically if you do end up needing X & a DM07:13
matsamanyou may as well be using Ubuntu Desktop07:13
matsamanbut07:13
webchat333yea... unfortunate07:13
matsamansince you're not sure you need it yet, it could be worth it to just keep setting it up for Server07:13
matsamanwebchat333: so, yeah actually sorry07:14
matsamanyou don't need to make sure it all auto-starts correctly just to see if it works07:14
matsamanjust install lightdm and start it07:14
matsamanor you can try 'startx' if it's there07:14
matsamanI've no idea what just X installed comes with on Ubuntu07:15
KBarIf you want to know, you can look at the .manifest file of the image.07:16
KBar*know that07:16
matsamanit either comes with startx or it doesn't07:17
matsamanif it doesn't I'd use apt-file to find it07:17
matsamanor just install lightdm & use that07:17
webchat333I have X11 but the config in /etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty07:26
webchat333oh no07:26
ducassewebchat333: the config is generated each time x starts07:27
webchat333ok  so adding startx to systemd autologin  is a good idea or bad idea ?/07:32
ducasseyou can set lightdm up to autologin, that is the proper way to do it07:33
webchat333can I do it without a dm ? its only for airplay mirroring07:35

philip0Hello, it's my first install of ubuntu, and I selected to use Secure Boot and gave a password to enroll keys. On boot I was presented with a MOK management interface and it was not clear what to do. System now boots without third party firmware active (eg NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it could not communicate with the NVIDIA driver. How do I re-do11:09
philip0the key signing step and do it successfully? Docs seem to be not detailed on this.11:09
philip0https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UEFI/SecureBoot says, "Once the installation is complete and the system is restarted, at first boot the user is presented with the MokManager program (part of the installed shim loader), as a set of text-mode panels that all the user to enroll the generated MOK. The user selects "Enroll MOK", is shown a fingerprint of the11:12
philip0certificate to enroll, and is prompted to confirm the enrollment. Once confirmed, the new MOK will be entered in firmware and the user will be asked to reboot the system. "11:12
philip0But I did not see a fingerprint. I had a choice of continue, reset MOK, enroll key and enroll hash. The last two choices gave me a text based directory browser and I had no idea where to go.11:13
philip0What should I have done and how do I restart the process?11:15
philip0https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MokManager    :  "This page does not exist yet."11:16
philip0any suggestions of where to go for help with Secure Boot / MOK Management ?11:24
Jeremy31I usually disable Secure Boot instead of dealing with MOK11:28
brandonelizaphilip0, just hang around. I do what Jeremy31 does because I useually can;t access my system after a reboot and then freak out11:29
brandonelizaI remember nvidia proprietary drivers just finishing startup because of secure bookt so I have windows with it and linux on NON uefi BOOT11:30
brandonelizahere if something goes wrong you need to have a live boot or something at hand11:31
brandonelizawhich is a bit more trouble to remake from another system11:31
brandonelizasecure boot is good but I find it hard to manage things when something goes wrong.11:33
brandonelizaEverything should have been ok but some key was not installed in the BIOS or soething so the driver failed driver signing.11:38
philip0Has anyone done it successfully? Which option do you choose ? Enroll key or enroll hash?11:42
philip0did you have to choose a partition? Which one do you choose? Did you have to navigate the filesystem? Where do you go to?11:43
=== ledeni__ is now known as ledeni
tomreynphilip0: you should just need to enroll the key from mok manager12:01
philip0ok. how do I do that?12:01
tomreyni don't usually point to youtube videos, but maybe it's the easiest here https://youtu.be/n8VwTYU0Mec?t=43512:01
philip0and do you know if the to-be-signed key and info is in the EFI System Partition or elsewhere?\12:02
tomreynon the esp, i think12:02
tomreynif things go well, i don't think you should get to see the mok manager at all actually12:03
tomreynthat's if secure boot is already enabled in enrollment mode, and you install ubuntu then, using the nvidia driver which it provides.12:04
tomreyn(and your uefi is properly done)12:04
philip0oh secure boot has an enrollment mode? I need to look at my BIOS more closely12:06
tomreynenrollment mode is when no password is set, yet, and the ubuntu installer prompts you for it12:07
Jeremy31philip0: your UEFI/BIOS might have an option to enroll MOK12:07
philip0Jeremy31, do you mean that is an alternative route or a necessary precondition?12:37
Jeremy31philip0: some BIOS might not allow just any OS to add a MOK12:40
philip0My BIOS has several settings: 1. Enable Secure Boot: ON.12:41
philip02 Secure Boot Mode: Deployed Mode (Default)  or Audit Mode [Perform signature check but does not block execution of all UEFI drivers and bootloaders. Use this mode when making modifications to Secure Boot keys.12:41
philip03. Expert Key Management Enable Custom Mode (Default:OFF) Allows the PK, KEK, db, and dbx security key databases to be manipulated.12:41
philip0It is not clear whether I need Audit mode, custom mode, neither, or both. Ideas?12:42
philip0if it helps, this is Dell BIOS12:44
tomreynthe first thing i'd do when i wanted to use secureboot is to upgrade bios to make sure (as much as you can) that it's not a buggy secureboot implementation12:48

philip0oddly, nvidia-smi does not seem to exist on this second install. How do I query apt to find which package provides it? apt search nvidia-smi returns: gpustat hobbit-plugins libnvidia-ml-dev, which don't seem relevant13:07

coz_interesting14:04
philip02. Debian worked well on the live USB, except the high resolution monitor was not supported, which did not interfere with the installation. The installation resulted in a system where the bluetooth was being started and stopped about twice a second. So workable but with a daemon keeping the system warmer than necessary.14:06
philip02a. The problem was the AX210 wifi and bluetooth card. So neither wifi nor bluetooth were available. Conflicting reports online regarding support in 5.11, 5.13, 5.15 and possible regressions in 5.15.14:07

_srpI suspect over the years installations and deinstallations left some dirt behind, could that be?14:13
_srpphilip0, yes, my typical setup is firefox, chromium (multiple tabs), libreoffice calc and spyder3 open at once14:13
coz__srp, I have seen, in the past, upgrading can cause some "constipation" not sure with your system14:14
philip0recent firefox eats RAM like never before.14:14
_srpbut it is taking minutes to boot up the machine and get to the desktop even before I load all these14:14
tomreyn_srp: those applications together could easily fill your remaining available memory14:14
philip0_srp: desktop or laptop?14:15
_srpright now, I have firefox, hexchat, snap store, a terminal and a file manager open14:15
philip0Can you add more RAM?14:15
tomreynso maybe you should do a fresh install. but also get more ram, if you can14:15
coz_agreed14:15
_srpphilip0, yes, I will. I have already ordered, waiting for delivery14:15
philip0firefox eats RAM and doesn't give much back until you quit it.14:16
_srpI have noticed my /home/user folder is filled with .config directories... some for software I don't even use anymore14:16
coz_brave seems to use far less, at least here14:16
_srpcould I simply delete them?14:16
tomreyn_srp: if you know you no longer need them, you can delete them safely, yes14:17
philip0_srp  Back up first somewhere safe, then experiment14:17
coz_tomreyn, types faster than I %)14:17
tomreynjust sometimes, coz ;)14:18
_srpwell, if I reinstall them, they should generate the default profile as if I had first installed14:18
philip0Thank you everyone for your help with the third-party drivers!14:18
coz_tomreyn, Laptop, big hands here, typically 2 finger typing14:18
_srptomreyn, for a fresh install, download the ISO from the site and follow the script, right?14:18
tomreyn_srp: yes14:18
_srpok, could try that too, if unavoidable14:19
ravage_srp: consider a backup of your data before you do that :)14:19
tomreyn_srp: make sure you install in uefi boot mode if your laptop support it14:19
_srpthank you all for the insights14:19
coz__srp, wait for your ram to arrive if you can14:19
_srpravage, I am a digital hoarder! I never simply delete anything ;-)14:19
tomreynshould not matter about the ram14:19
ravagethe ram will be used when added. no need to wait14:20
ravageand you see if the reinstall alone made any difference14:20
coz_this is true14:20
tomreyn4 GB is enough to install, and adding the ram later wont do any harm or result in a different configuration14:20
coz_the ram was my personal prefernce14:21
ravage4 GB is ok but far from ideal. for any desktop use with multiple browsers 8GB is really a good investment14:21
tomreyn_srp: you can also try just creatign a new user account and then copy over only those settings you still need. but this won't speed up the slow boot, or fix any system wide problems.14:21
ravagei think a system from 2015 deserves a reinstall really :)14:21
tomreynyes, even when you know how to clean things up properly14:22
ravageim still unsure about what to do with 22.04. upgrade or reinstall :)14:22
=== oerheks_ is now known as oerheks
ravageand the system is maybe 2 years old now. i still feel better on a fresh installation somehow14:23
coz_ravage, this is my prefernce, a clean install eliminates doubts14:25
tomreynwith some releases, there are some hard facts which make it worthwhile to do a fresh install, such as newer file systems on /, increased /boot file system size (if separate), newer LUKS encryption, ZFS etc.14:25
_srper... I have / and /home mounted on different partitions. So a reinstall in my / partition shouldn't touch the .config files, right?14:25
ravageit should not if you make the right choices during setup. but keeping /home keeps all the bloat :)14:25
tomreyn_srp: as long as you can ensure that /home remains untouched, yes. but ... have backups.14:25
ravagemaybe rename your user directory and start with a fresh user14:26
ravageand copy over what you need14:26
oerheksI would do both; upgrade and fresh install14:26
ravageas tomreyn said: make backups in any scenario :)14:26
lucio_t14:35
_srp4.3GB of config files in /home14:44
_srpstill, that shouldn't be cause of slow loading... aren't these files accessed only when the corresponding software is launched?14:45

LuckyManthanks14:51
tomreyn_srp: if you prefer to disregard the recommendation given here (to reinstall), and would instead wantto go through the possibly very long process of trying to understand how you can improve the situation on the current system, you should start with sharing the output of the "dmesg" command, or better "journalctl -b" soon after a reboot14:52
_srptomreyn, not disregarding the recommendation, just backing up before the big jump (and while the ISO downloads)14:56
tomreyn_srp: i'm wondering what you mean by "i'm clicking on the ubuntu icon", because i don't think there is an ubuntu icon on the 20.04 default desktop.15:01

transhumanistwhats the trick for finding old kernels ... the location old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/ doesnt group individual files that go with one kernel together, they are spread all over the place. I am looking for all the files associated with kernel 5.6.8-x , thanks in advance15:56
transhumanistthey have like 100,000 files in one directory15:56
leftyfbtranshumanist: why do you need an old kernel?15:58
transhumanistbecuase it seems 5.6.8 is the one that has ipusb that works\15:58
leftyfbtranshumanist: mind you, anything in old-releases is EOL and not supported15:59
transhumanistok a different question how do i find out which kernel version has a particular working module15:59
leftyfbtranshumanist: "working". Is there a bug report that shows ipusb doesn't work on any modern or supported kernels or are you just going by your own personal experience?16:00
leftyfbtranshumanist: if you find something that doesn't work, the answer should never be to revert to EOL software16:01
transhumanistthis is the error https://superuser.com/questions/1597526/usb-ip-on-win10-1903-failed-to-open-usb-id-database even with the file in place on both windows and linux, also a second error16:01
leftyfbtranshumanist: have you tried using ipusb between 2 linux machines?16:02
transhumanistno just between windows machines16:02
transhumanistit also gives on linux side usbip error portocol spec without prior class and subclass at line 2329116:03
transhumanistthat second error is on the linux side16:03
leftyfbtranshumanist: I would test this between linux and linux. The error you posted is a problem with Windows, not linux16:04
transhumanistI can do that with wsl - ubuntu on windows connecting to my laptop and come back later, thanks for the tip16:04
tomreynspcifically supported versions of ubuntu while you're looking for support on this channel16:04
leftyfbtranshumanist: I wouldn't suggest WSL. That is a very non-standard linux implementation, kernel and network stack. All of which would verymuch add to the complexity of using ipusb16:05
transhumanistok , that means I have to find a second machine for testing, guess a vm will do16:06
transhumanistI iwill use my debian vm16:06
leftyfbtranshumanist: also, it can find very little information about "ipusb" nor can I find any package names or descriptiosns or files in any ubuntu package mentioning "ipusb". I don't think this is something that is supported in ubuntu16:07
tomreynthe superuser.com post suggests they're referring to https://www.kernel.org/doc/readme/tools-usb-usbip-README - but i don't see the Ubuntu relation, yet.16:10
transhumanistit is indeed a package on ubuntu16:12
transhumanisterr wait maybe I installed that from a deb... nm16:12
leftyfbtranshumanist: it's not16:12
transhumanistno sorry for the mistake16:12
transhumanistleftyfb thanks for the pointer it does indeed seem to work between ubuntu and debian ---just letting you know, it is indeed a windows issue, thanks I apprecate the help16:24

Guest2027Hi all, can someone help me out with a dual boot issue? I'm trying to install 20.04 on the same drive as Windows 10, but after setting up the partitions I get an error saying something like "The attempt to mount a file system with type vfat in SSI1(0,0,0),partition#1(nvme0p2)at/boot/efi failed" (not exact text). I tried fixing it, but no success yet.18:15
Jeremy31Guest2027: Do you get the option to install along Windows?  Did you disable the hybrid shutdown in Windows?18:17
Guest2027Thanks Jeremy31. I do get that option. So far, I've been trying to have separate partitions for / and /home, which I think that option doesn't do by itself. I did not disable hybrid shutdown. I'm not sure what it is, but I did make sure that Windows was properly shut down, as opposed to suspended, if that would be the problem.18:20

Guest92brb18:21
Guest2027What I'm thinking may be the problem is that Windows already put an EFI partition in the drive, with filesystem ntfl. It seems Ubuntu needs it to be FAT32.18:21
Jeremy31Guest2027: Windows should use FAT32 for EFI system partition18:22
Guest2027I tried telling the installer not to use Windows' EFI ("do not use this partition"), and instead use another partition I made and formatted as FAT32. No difference.18:23
Jeremy31Guest2027: It wouldn't like 2 EFI on the same drive18:23
Guest2027That's what I gather, that Windows should be using FAT32, but no. Maybe it's because I "installed" Windows by migrating it from a HDD using Samsunsg's data migration tool (new Samsung SSD).18:24
oerheksfilesystem ntfl? you mean ntfs?18:24
Guest2027Sorry, yes. ntfs.18:24
Jeremy31Guest2027: open the Gparted program18:25
Guest2027I did think more than one EFI on the same drive may be trouble, which is why I set it to "do not use this partition", but it's still trying to mount to it. The error that I get does indicate that specific partition.18:26
oerheksno, windows does notmake an EFI partition on ntfs.. disable secure boot might help you out.18:26
Guest2027Thanks, I'll open Gparted. First I need to see if I can cancel the installation, which is frozen and at the same time locking GParted out.18:27
Jeremy31Guest2027: you shut down Windows from CLI with shutdown /s18:27
Guest2027oerheks, I guess the Samsung tool does it. I'll see if disabling secure boot helps.18:28
Guest2027Jeremy, no I just did a normal shutdown.18:29
Guest2027Ok Jeremy, what do with Gparted?18:30
Guest2027OR should I go back and fix something else first?18:30
Jeremy31Guest2027: Boot back into Windows, open a command line and enter> shutdown /s18:32
Jeremy31Windows will make it look like partitions are still mounted if hybrid shutdown is used18:32
Guest2027All right. I'll be back. Probably with a different nick. So you don't think it's about the file system? The solutions I've seen online say that reformatting to FAT32 solves it, but if I did that I would lose my Windows installation.18:33
Jeremy31Guest2027: or use the Ubuntu ISO and install clonezilla to clone that drive again18:34
Jeremy31If you still have that original, not much you can lose other than sanity18:34
Guest2027So if I do go the clonezilla route, do I need to just clone the main Windows partition, or do I also need the diagnostics partition, EFI, etc?18:35
Guest2027Heheh, my sanity has been dropping steadily for a couple of days, but I do have everything backed up.18:36
Guest2027I'm trying hard to clone Windows rather than reinstall from scratch, though. Although maybe reinstalling would mean a FAT32 EFI and the problem would be solved.18:37
Jeremy31Guest2027: Clone the drive as long as the new one is the same size or larger18:38
Guest2027The whole drive, then? That has another 2 or 3 OS on it, but I guess I can always just delete the partitions I won't use. I think I'll try shutting Windows via CLI first if you still think that may be the problem, and if that doesn't work I'll clone the whole thing.18:42

MrCollinsGAUbuntu 20.04 when I run a batch script and there are unseen errors, which log do I check?19:21
Jeremy31Calling it from terminal?19:22
MrCollinsGAJeremy31, yes19:22
Jeremy31maybe /var/log/kern.log19:23
MrCollinsGAJeremy31, ok thank you. I will chk that now.19:23

jhutchinsMrCollinsGA: Which log, if any, depends on what program/command is running.20:17
jhutchinsIf it logs to stdout, you should see the output in the terminal that runs the program.20:18
jhutchinsMrCollinsGA: Perhaps start by running each step manually and seeing what output you get.20:18
MrCollinsGAjhutchins, thank you very much :) ill give that a shot20:19
jhutchinsIf you're running a script inside a script, look at the internal script and see what it's running, and whether it's redirecting it's output.20:19
jhutchinsMrCollinsGA: An ordinary shell script will not write to a log.20:20

questionmy ubuntu question would be: why does mozilla show "this connection is not secure" so often.23:20
jhutchinsWindows does funky default "we know what's good for you" things with networking, and likes to charge extra for the "pro" version that lets you actually connect (sometimes).23:21
matsamanquestion: probably 'cause it isn't secure23:21
Maikquestion: even that is not ubuntu related i guess23:21
