knightwisegood morning07:44
zxmpio/08:14
knightwiseheyhey08:31
knightwisefinally got the old iMac i had lying around working again08:31
knightwise27 inch display :) installed ubuntu on it08:31
knightwiseits over 10 years old but with an SSD still runs like a charm08:31
knightwisejust had to install the macfan package to keep the fans down08:32
zxmpineat. how slow is ubuntu on it?08:39
zxmpimight a lighter distro be faster, more practical?08:40
zxmpii hate seeing old hardware being dumped but there is a level below which it's no longer practical to be a daily driver08:40
knightwiseits actually quite fast09:05
knightwiseeven those older dual cores still pull their weight09:05
zxmpiyeah, i give mac some flak for using old hardware but they do optimise their hardware very well to make a good overall system09:06
knightwisevery true09:08
knightwiseI even have an older snowbook lying around still running the latest buntu09:08
knightwisepop in an SSD, boost the ram and there you go09:08
zxmpiside bonus is that kids see them as a status symbol and care for them a bit better than random laptop. have seen macboos survive many students years in college whereas a hp/dell/acer barely lasts a year09:09
knightwisethe macbooks we use here are for professional use and those babies LAST09:10
knightwiseatm my little pi is grabbing some youtube mixes i need for livestreams.09:11
knightwiseGot Tmux open on it, 6 windows happily chugging away09:11
zxmpipis are the exception to the ancient hardware rule. small runs on sniff of leccy. you can always find a use for an ancient one that works09:12
knightwisethe only pc brand that keeps on giving has got to be Lenovo Thinkpads09:12
zxmpii think the framework laptops might bump them from their #1 pedestal09:13
zxmpiwill have to see how long the company AND the laptops last09:14
knightwisebrand ? 09:16
zxmpihttps://frame.work/laptop09:22
daftykinscore 2 duos aren't enough imo, got an old lemon one here (iMac) CPU runs about 70 degrees idle, hah14:03
daftykinsin fact i am keen to get rid as i will likely get offered a much newer one soon, they're about only useful for creating macOS boot media, though i often do that from a VM 14:04
zxmpiprobably when winter is over :-P14:52
