=== arif-ali_ is now known as arif-ali [07:44] good morning [08:14] o/ [08:31] heyhey [08:31] finally got the old iMac i had lying around working again [08:31] 27 inch display :) installed ubuntu on it [08:31] its over 10 years old but with an SSD still runs like a charm [08:32] just had to install the macfan package to keep the fans down [08:39] neat. how slow is ubuntu on it? [08:40] might a lighter distro be faster, more practical? [08:40] i hate seeing old hardware being dumped but there is a level below which it's no longer practical to be a daily driver [09:05] its actually quite fast [09:05] even those older dual cores still pull their weight [09:06] yeah, i give mac some flak for using old hardware but they do optimise their hardware very well to make a good overall system [09:08] very true [09:08] I even have an older snowbook lying around still running the latest buntu [09:08] pop in an SSD, boost the ram and there you go [09:09] side bonus is that kids see them as a status symbol and care for them a bit better than random laptop. have seen macboos survive many students years in college whereas a hp/dell/acer barely lasts a year [09:10] the macbooks we use here are for professional use and those babies LAST [09:11] atm my little pi is grabbing some youtube mixes i need for livestreams. [09:11] Got Tmux open on it, 6 windows happily chugging away [09:12] pis are the exception to the ancient hardware rule. small runs on sniff of leccy. you can always find a use for an ancient one that works [09:12] the only pc brand that keeps on giving has got to be Lenovo Thinkpads [09:13] i think the framework laptops might bump them from their #1 pedestal [09:14] will have to see how long the company AND the laptops last [09:16] brand ? [09:22] https://frame.work/laptop [14:03] core 2 duos aren't enough imo, got an old lemon one here (iMac) CPU runs about 70 degrees idle, hah [14:04] in fact i am keen to get rid as i will likely get offered a much newer one soon, they're about only useful for creating macOS boot media, though i often do that from a VM [14:52] probably when winter is over :-P
