rdzhey all. i would like to display gradients on an external screen with a higher bit depth than 8 bit per channel. The monitor advertises itself as capable of 30 bit. how can i effectively use it?20:11
rdzwith ubuntu i mean20:11
jhutchinsrdz: What have you tried so far?20:13
oerheksi think you can only set global bpp20:13
rdzjhutchins, I haven't tried anything, but displaying gradeints with an opengl window shows steps. it looks like low bit depth20:15
rdzoerheks, how can you set global bpp?20:15
rdzoerheks, that is actually what i want.. to me it looks like my desktop is using 8bit per channel, altough the monitor is capable of more.. but i don't know how to change that setting20:16
rdzgoogling around suggests that ubuntu desktop is indeed 8b/ch20:16
oerhekswrite a xorg.conf, 24 for 8-bit or 30 for 10-bit https://linuxreviews.org/HOWTO_enable_10-bit_color_on_Linux20:20
oerheksNever done this myself, still i think it applies to both screens20:21
rdzoerheks, thanks.. i'll try this.. though writing an Xorg.conf file feeels like a thing from the 00's  :-)20:25
GSMarquisI feel like a simple brand change for Ubuntu like dropping the orange color would do wonders.....oh and also snaps.20:26
echotheyre gonna be only orange and drop purple20:27
GSMarquisAre you being sarcastic or serious?20:40
oerheksdropping snaps sounds sarcastic to me20:40
oerhekslolz20:40
rdzoerheks, according to Xorg.log i have 10 bit enabled and icons in file browser are all black... however the gradients still show steps.. so maybe there is another bitdepth bottleneck than the display.. anyway, you already helped a lot. thanks20:41
GSMarquisIt was......Im a flatpak person. The color was not though.20:41
oerheksyou don't like snaps? change distro20:41
rdzwhy changing distro? i disabled snaps and didn't miss anything yet20:41
GSMarquisI just dont use them. I enable flatpak.20:41
oerheksthey you are not running gnome..20:42
rdzhm.. ok? i thought i am not running any snaps..20:43
rdzi use regular gnome desktop. what part comes from snap?20:43
oerhekssnap list  would show you20:44
rdzsnap: command not found20:44
oerheksregular gnome desktop ... on what linux ?20:48
oerhekswait, i dropped support for trolls and mint users20:48
rdzUbuntu 20.0420:48
rdzoerheks, are you using a newer (non-LTS) version of Ubuntu?20:50
jhutchinsrdz: Just FYI, writing an Xorg.conf is WAY before '00.  Pre-Linux at least.20:51
rdzjhutchins, ok. that makes me feel even older..20:54
genii!xorgconf20:56
ubottuThe /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is deprecated, but sometimes may still be needed to pass values to specific drivers. See `man xorg.conf` for file structure and syntax. For Ubuntu-specific documentation and more information, see also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config20:56
geniihm20:56
oerheksgenii, indeed, but one can put a custom one in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20:58
jhutchinsFor that matter, /etc/X11/xorg.conf works too.20:58
jhutchinsive or take [X|x]20:59
rdzthere wasn't a xorg.conf.d directory on my computer, but I created it and put the section in there and it seems Xorg read it20:59
jhutchinsrdz: It could be a limitation of whatever software you're using to display gradients too.  Is this just the background setting for the gnome desktop?21:00
rdzno21:01
jhutchinsrdz: Yes, that's how the .d folders generally work.21:01
rdzno, not the desktop background.. its the display of Gem, a graphics external for puredata21:02
rdzapt show gem21:02
rdzi was hoping an openGL window would actually use the full 10 bit21:02
rdzbut apparently, it isn't21:02
jhutchins!info gem21:11
ubottugem (1:0.94-3, impish): Graphics Environment for Multimedia - Pure Data library. In component universe, is optional. Built by gem. Size 1,572 kB / 6,494 kB21:11
jhutchinsrdz: It could also be a limit of whatever is generating the gradient.  I know my systems do a pretty good job of displaying photos with full color depth using a variety of very low-level photo display programs and default desktop (xfce4) settings.21:13
jhutchinsI've done some pretty deep graphics work, but that was several hardware generations ago.21:14
jhutchinsToughest problem I had was getting the DPI configurations set for certain applications.21:14
rdzjhutchins, it could absolutely be a limitation of the tool. i'm not knowledgable anough to know, though21:14
rdzjhutchins, i guess instead of making it work with 10bit, i just add dither to mask the steps21:15
rdzthen it will show ok with regular 8b/ch display settings21:15
rdzor at least, i hope so21:15
jhutchinsWhatever gets the job done.21:16
Chunkyzhi! I have a new pc (hp 800 g2 mini) I can't install Ubuntu. I make an .ISO (from xubuntu's site) or even the legacy (mini.iso for 20.04) but every time I try and boot, it brings me back to the boot menu. I've tried uefi and legacy. and I've tried gpt. I can't get it to boot. any ideas? currently typing this from Windows 11.22:16
ChunkyzI've tried with DD via Debian 11 (which worked but I wanted to dual boot with windows) and I've tried rufus (on windows 11)22:17
Chunkyzam I missing something?22:17
enycChunkyz: all ubuntu images  souldn't be modded with rufus/etc22:18
enycjust need raw-writing22:18
Chunkyzenyc, I'm not *modding* them.22:19
enycmost likely you have a bad image write,  maybe an existing FS was auto-mounted before writing with dd ?22:19
Chunkyznah that's not it.22:19
sarnolddid you disable windows fast boot?22:19
enycsarnold: oooo good point22:19
Chunkyzyeah22:20
enycChunkyz: fwiw dual booting can be pain, virtualizing windows can be better, boot can get messed up later etc etc ;/22:20
sarnoldI've heard about various machines making it very hard to actually change the boot order22:20
Chunkyznever had an issue before enyc it's just this PC is new to me. lol22:20
sarnoldand I want to say HP was on that list22:20
sarnoldbut who knows, they probably buy computers from the same three vendors that everyone else does, too22:21
cbreakyeah, ubuntu is well known to messing up booting :(22:21
cbreakapparently there's an open ticket about it for years and it hasn't been fixed22:21
cbreakbut I don't think that's the problem here22:21
enycChunkyz: I'd be tempted to compare with few different images  e.g. try  different ubuntu image versions,   mint 20.3 (ubuntu derivative)  and  MXLinux-21  (a good debian XFCE distro)  ...  see if you get same issues or not ...  imho22:21
enycstart narrowing down combination of issuse22:21
cbreakChunkyz: have you tried the 21.10 image? Maybe something newer works better.22:21
enycfwiw HP consumer kit eurgh  annoying22:22
cbreakI had problems booting LTS here, but 20.10 back then worked22:22
cbreak(also, I used ubuntu images, not xubuntu)22:22
enycInstalling 21.10 now  to upgrade to 22.04LTS after release,  is perfectly acceptable imho22:22
Chunkyzhm, ubuntu 21.10 server is doing the exact same; I go into my bios, press boot from the USB I installed it to and it goes straight back to the boot menu. :-(22:28
enycChunkyz: i'd try firmware/bios update if there is available22:29
enycChunkyz: I wonder if something like  secure boot nedes turning off22:29
Chunkyzyeah already tried updating the bios.22:29
Chunkyzenyc, can't disable SB because of win1122:29
enycChunkyz: MXlinux 21  is significantly different image i'd also try22:29
enycChunkyz: eurgh22:29
enycChunkyz: I don't really know about uefi secure boot in detail, but I'd have thought it could be temprorarially disabled22:31
enycsee if thats part of it, get any stick to boot, etc tec22:31
jhutchinscbreak: ... especially given that there are thousands of people who are using Ubuntu in dual boot configurations, and have been for several decades.22:40
jhutchinsChunkyz: Do check the CRC of the downloaded iso file, and see if you can check the integrety of the burned image.22:42
jhutchinsChunkyz: Some iso writing programs don't write bootable images properly.22:42
jhutchinsActually, the question of whether you can boot an installer or live image has nothing to do with dual-boot, that's a question for how you configure it when the installer is running.22:44
enycjhutchins: I was aware rufus can tend to  try to make images hdd-bootable, and all that... when ubuntu images are already  BIOS CD-no-emulation-boot + BIOS mbr/ptbl boot + UEFI boot  all in one carefully pre-arranged22:45
enycjhutchins: and also that dd'ing can easily go wrong due to partition being automounted already22:45
cluelesspersoncan someone suggest a high speed (gigabit) wifi usb adapter for use with ubuntu?22:49
cluelesspersonI tried buying one myself, but they turned out to be trash.22:49
jhutchinshttps://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/ <- this used to be the standard for burning iso images, it's been a while since I did one.22:53
jhutchinsRufus needs to use the DD option.22:53
ChunkyzDisabling secure boot, then installing server and I'm back t Square one.23:05
Chunkyzhttps://i.postimg.cc/5yCm3N1p/IMG-20220217-230443.jpg23:06
ChunkyzNo matter what I do 😅 that always shows up.23:06
ChunkyzSo annoying23:08
tomreynChunkyz: https://www.linuxlinks.com/hp-elitedesk-800-g2-mini-desktop-pc-linux/3/ seems to suggest all you'd need to do is to disable Fast Boot and Secure Boot.23:11
ChunkyzYeah I've tried that23:12
MonoLIf I sudo nano can I then edit and save text files and they´ll keep the original permissions?23:13
tomreynChunkyz: have you checked the hdd for errors?23:14
tomreynMonoL: i would think so, but maybe just give it a try to be sure?23:15
Chunkyztomreyn: I did, was fine.23:16
tomreynChunkyz: which utility did you use?23:16
MonoLOk it´s just I´m not used to this kind of work and I don´t want to experiment and mess it up23:17
Chunkyztomreyn: the one built into the bios.23:18
ChunkyzBrb23:18
tomreynChunkyz: use smortmon-tools from the desktop installer / live iso23:19
tomreyn* smartmontools23:19
jhutchinsWhat does the condition of the hard disk have to do with booting an iso?23:22
MonoLcd ~ takes me home, but how do I get to /etc?23:23
tomreynjhutchins: nothing, i would think. why are you asking?23:23
tomreynMonoL:  cd /etc23:23
Chunkyztomreyn: I can boot the server iso, fhen623:24
ChunkyzThen tells me no boot device after it's installed23:24
MonoLtomreyn: Thanks, that worked!23:25
tomreynChunkyz: what's "fhen6"? other than that, you seem to have said so before23:25
ChunkyzTypo23:25
MonoLStrange that if I cd ~ it takes me to the user home and /etc isn't there but still cd /etc from there takes me to /etc . Strange behaviour.23:27
tomreynMonoL: it's just that ~ is a special shorthand. try this: echo ~23:28
ChunkyzHmm23:29
Chunkyztomreyn: how do you recommend I create this bootable image? Obviously Rufus isn't working23:30
ChunkyzI've tried gpt23:31
tomreynChunkyz: so this is on windows? rufus in dd mode should work with any ubuntu iso23:31
ChunkyzGpt or mbr?23:31
tomreyn...that is not legacy23:31
tomreynyou shouldn't need to select a partition table23:31
oerheksno boot device after it's installed .. change boot order, and hdd order?23:31
Chunkyzoerheks: tried that too.23:32
ChunkyzSec let me try tomreyn23:32
tomreynChunkyz: if rufus still won't work for you for some reason, balena etcher is pretty fail safe.23:34
echoi was being serious, i read ubuntu is gonna go back to being orange and drop the purple. i guess theyre going back to where they came from.23:38
tomreynecho: this channel is for support23:39
echoi know sorry23:39
oerheksecho,  read what you want, we have no such info23:39
echook23:39
=== genii is now known as genii-core
ChunkyzIt's installed!!!23:49
sarnoldnice, what was it?23:49
