ednashhow necessary is it for me to start the systemd-homed service?01:12
Dr-007hey. ive been using zenity to create GUI windows via a bash script on my Ubuntu installation. sometimes i want to do some more complex stuff that isnt possible so i found 'yad' (branch of zenity). The thing is that i dont want to use yad because it has to be installed and i believe zenity was pre-installed in Ubuntu. Buuut.. im considering it now and im asking: what type of GUI building would you use? right now im googling python3 gui windows. but since i01:30
Dr-007alreadu have a bash script its preffered to keep it there01:30
FurretUberHi, is it possible to set the grub2 background depending on the computer's resolution? I set up a PXE server, and I would like to control the background, so it doesn't look stretched01:46
Bashing-omFurretUber: One can set the grub resolution - see the hint in the /etc/default/grub file.01:52
FurretUberWhile it's possible, the problem is that if it's set, for example, 640x480 and the monitor is widescreen, then the picture will be stretched. Not like it has to be perfect, but if it's possible, it would look better :)02:00
snakehi, im using ubuntu server 20.04, how can i limit my terminal colors to ones that are easier on my eyes?02:34
Bashing-omsnake: What terminal ' echo $TERM ' - xterm has a color picker in preferences.02:38
snakeBashing-om, it just says "linux"02:40
snakeits not like a windowed terminal, just the regular ubuntu server terminal02:41
snakethe blue color is so dark it basically looks black02:41
Bashing-omsnake: Do not know but ---- ' dircolors --print-database ' give a hint for the way forward ?02:50
snakethis looks like its specifically for the `ls` program, is that right?02:50
snakemaybe the terminal for linux just offers generic colors with a wide range, and only the application can choose to not use stupid low-contrasting color combinations02:51
snakemeaning i need to configure each program indivudally to use good colors02:51
jhutchinsIt depends on the application.02:52
jhutchinssnake: Also, as mentioned, which terminal emulator you use.02:52
snakethat stinks :(02:53
snakejhutchins, none i think02:53
snakei dont have any gui02:53
snakeim on ubuntu SERVER for the third time02:53
jhutchinssnake: You want Microsoft where one company controls how everything works?02:53
snakewhat?02:53
jhutchinssnake: It's the historic diversity of Linux, Unix, and Open Source software.02:53
snakei just want to be able to read my terminal easily02:54
jhutchinsThe great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.02:54
snakethat's ironic lol02:54
jhutchinssnake: So learn a little about what terminals are available, and what you can control in them.02:54
snakecan i just disable colors entirely02:55
jhutchinssnake: Some people put a lot of time and effort into it.  Other people just accept the defaults and get on with what they were doing.02:55
jhutchinssnake: Depends on the terminal.  Yes it's possible.02:55
snakehow?02:55
jhutchinssnake: Depends on the terminal.02:55
snakeecho $term returns "linux"02:56
jhutchinssnake: There is no universal answer.02:56
snakethat's fine, what's the specific answer then?02:56
snakejhutchins, don't have a cow dude02:56
snakeyou're acting all defensive02:56
jhutchinssnake: The terminal emulation programs and termcap databases emulate the many different terminals that were built to interface with different computers.02:56
snakehow can i determine which terminal im using?02:57
snakeim just using ubuntu server so it should be the default02:57
jhutchinssnake: GUI?02:57
snakejhutchins, you're merely drowning out my question and thoughts by hitting enter frequently02:57
enigma9o7[m]if you dont have a desktop installed, you're using TTY02:58
snakeenigma9o7[m], thankyou02:58
snakeim using TTY then02:58
enigma9o7[m]and your shell defines the colors02:58
enigma9o7[m]most likely bash02:58
jhutchinsenigma9o7[m]: Not termcap?02:58
snakeenigma9o7[m], meaning?02:59
snake(i mean yes, i am using bash of course... that's what ubuntu server 20.04 comes with)02:59
enigma9o7[m]oh i dunno02:59
snakethat's fine if you don't know. i guess getting some kind of response is better than silence (tho silence is better than starting an empty argument for no good reason)03:00

esvhey folks, I am using 20.04, the about section says I am using X11 for the windowing system, just wondering, are you aware of  any plans to switch to wayland? not a fan of wayland but that seems to be the new flavor03:53
snakethe information i came back and shared is THE solution to what i was asking03:53
snakerob0, yeah that's understandable, i am just so tired of taking crap from people that would rather hit enter 100 times to drown out my questions and responses03:54
snakeso i lashed out, but it was against the CoC because i was mean03:54
esvalso, is there a way to make terminal to copy the selected section automatically to the clipboard w/o having to type shift+ctrl-C?03:54
snakeesv, 21.10 uses wayland03:55
snakekubuntu has a wayland option too but i didnt try it03:55
esvk, thnx03:56
snakethat's pretty robust that you can switch to x11 or wayland at runtime03:56
snakeimpressive software development going on there03:56
esvyeah, but barrier does not seem to work well with wayland03:56
snakeyeah idk what that even is, sorry bud03:58
snakein any case you can use x11 for the time being. i dont think its deprecated or anything03:58

Dr-007hey, ive been using zenity to create some GUI dialogs. right now im trying to build a list where i can re-order the items. this doesnt seem possible. ive also tried yad (zenity's bigger brother/branch). any suggestions would be nice. but its probably to specific13:10
thelounge5469DR-007, try to use checkboxes to mark items and then forward to new screen with changed view setting if i recall correct13:28
Dr-007thelounge5469, thanks. i dont see how a checkbox makes the next screen know if to make it go up or down though. the "stupid" thing is that ive got it all set up. and the save button gives the column value but the extra-button="Up" just returns the value "Up" instead of the column value13:31

KolusionHey all. I am using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I disabled IPv4 from the network settings in the top right hand corner and now IPv6 isn't working and I get the message activation of network failed. Anyone know whats up?14:54
jushurKolusion: you are on a network setup that has ipv6 dhcp leasing?14:55
KolusionI am using Ubuntu inside VirtualBox. I would think VirtualBox would have DHCP leading for IPv6 by default like it does IPv4. But maybe it doesn't, I will check out its manual now. Great question mate!14:55

jushurKolusion: your host OS has IPv6 enabled?15:20
KolusionYes, I am able to connect to IPv6 servers from the host.15:21
KolusionEverything is stock so I am really confused.15:22
KolusionIPv6 method is 'Automatic' from Network Manager.15:24

leftyfbperfection/perfect16:40
Dr-007well, the details im showing you now in https://dpaste.com/AEBWLMPWJ are targetted at moving the order of partitions around. i want this because ive been making bootable usb sticks and sometimes i end up with the fdisk warning "partitions are out of order". this can be fixed via sfdisk -r i believe but .. well, thats my end goal16:42
leftyfbDr-007: so you want a tool to move partitions on flash drives around?16:42
Dr-007no i want a GUI environment where i can list stuff then change the order of the items in that list. something like zenity16:43
leftyfbDr-007: why not focus on building them correctly to begin with? If the partitions are wrong, rebuild it correctly. You do understand that usb flash drives have a limited life span of writes and moving partitions around certainly doesn't help that16:43
alkisgDr-007: python/glade to develop, then it works out of the box in most ubuntu live cds, libraries for that are preinstalled16:44

Dr-007leftyfb, yes but then sfdisk -r, --reorder <dev> fix partitions order (by start offset) would fix my problem magically. but without the power of me adding stuff in the blank spaces if i delete a partition. fdisk will created a partition on an earlier sector but assign it a latter /dev/sdaXX id then give you the "disk out of order" bs. so my GUI tool should prevent this in the first place. these bootable USB's ive been making ive been collecting all the mount16:49

alkisgDr-007: as I initially said; "python/glade to develop, then it works out of the box in most ubuntu live cds, libraries for that are preinstalled"17:11
alkisgWhile glade is not preinstalled, it's not needed to run the result; it's only needed for the development17:11

backthen1does the installer have a 'repair' mode?19:03
ravagebackthen1: what do you need repaired?19:06
ravagefor boot problems you can try https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair19:07
backthen1ravage: the page linked has 500 error19:18
backthen1ravage: My problem is when I boot there is a network name resolution error of some sort, and can't finish booting. Previously I installed an nVidia driver maybe that's the cause19:20
backthen1Now I want to try undo what I did, or have Ubuntu repair the system to a factory default state without erasing my files19:21
crucifyythose damn Nvidia drivers break everything lol19:22
ravagedo you have an exact error message? name resolution should not prevent your system from booting19:23
=== crucifyy is now known as Crucifyy
backthen1ravage: same error as https://www.linux.org/threads/failed-to-start-network-name-resolution.30467/19:26
ravageare you able to switch to another console at that point?19:28
ravagelike ctrl-alt-f319:28
backthen1that brings me to a console that prints a dozen lines with 'audit', 'profile load'. Still proceeding whatever its doing currently19:34
ravagedo you get a login at any console when you press enter? ctrl-alt-f4 and so on19:35
backthen1as with ctrl atl f3, screen clears with only cursor on upper left. No response with enter, esc.19:41
ravagecan you boot in rescue mode from the grub menu?19:45
coz_should be able to19:45
backthen1yes I can get in there19:46
ravageok. then we could try to disable that service for now and maybe even remove your nvidia driver19:46
thelounge3069.19:47
backthen1ok at the 'grub>' prompt19:48
ravageyou dont have to go that far19:48
ravagewhen you see the menu choose "Advanced options for Ubuntu"19:49
ravageand then you should have a recovery boot option with your current kernel version19:50

oerheksif this happened after installing nvidia drivers, is this an UEFI system? disable secureboot..19:52
ravageim not sure what the actual error is. did not get a screenshot of his actual screen19:52
ravagehe says that systend-resolved prevents the boot process to continue19:53
ravageand no login prompt19:53
oerheksand, make sure you boot in xorg, not a wayland session19:53
oerheksi believe this is nvidia causing issues19:54
ravagehe does not get that far19:54
thelounge3069get actual error could help ?19:57
oerhekshe posted an example..19:58
backthen1this image for reference https://www.linux.org/attachments/adnotacja-2020-08-30-122351-png.7209/20:01
backthen1thanks20:01
backthen1ravage: in the recovery mode, the same error happens. It checks for 8 mins and then eventually fails, and then it retries20:05

thelounge3069ctrl-c does not work ?20:14
thelounge3069backthen1 ^^^20:14
ravageif resolvd is your problem you can add "systemd.mask=systemd-resolved.service to your kernel parameters in grub20:14
ravagethat should prevent the service from being started at all20:15
thelounge3069ravage , look pic of error20:15
thelounge3069its fsckd error20:15
ravagethat is not his actual screen20:15
thelounge3069oh , sry ok20:15
ravagehe found that on the internet20:15

backthen1the other error from other service also occurred before20:21
ravageadd "systemd.mask=systemd-timesyncd.service" to your kernel parameters20:22
ravagepress "e" when you see the Ubuntu grub selection20:22
ravagethen add the parameter and press (i think) its F10 to boot with this parameter20:23
ravageits not permanent20:23
ravagethe key to boot is show at the bottom of the screen20:23
ravagehttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters20:24
ravage"Temporarily Add a Kernel Boot Parameter for Testing"20:25
backthen1I see quite a few blocks of config texts, each enclosed by a {} block. Should I add the systemd line to the end of the first {} block?20:31
backthen1the first block is not recovery and seems to have the highest version #20:32

CroranI'm preparing to move my OS and data to a new system. My disk is set up with LVM and encryption, per the ubuntu defaults. What would be the best way for me to copy everything to my new disk without rebooting into clonezilla or such?22:27

RonRN18I'm hoping someone can help me understand what is wrong with my setup. I have a new computer with an NVMe SSD as my primary drive and I wish to build Ubuntu on it with the ZFS filesystem. I am able to set it up but upon first boot, it always ends with a failed boot in "Emergency mode" or something to that effect and I can go no further.22:41
RonRN18As an alternative, I tried following the instructions from OpenZFS about installing Debian 11 Bullseye root on ZFS and also failing on boot. On the Debian side, it ends up pausing with "(intramfs)" on the screen. I'm not sure how to get beyond that. I really want ZFS as the filesystem to make incremental snapshots as needed.22:44
CroranRonRN18: ZFS is totally overkill for snapshots. the default ubuntu installs to LVM which supports snapshots22:45
CroranRonRN18: as for why your configuration doesn't work, this page says, "currently only MAAS allows ZFS to be installed as a root filesystem.22:46
Croranhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Reference/ZFS22:47
RonRN18Prior to trying to build this machine on a "bare-metal" machine, I made a test-run using a VM on XCP-ng. In my VM, I gave the VM five "hard drives". I installed Ubuntu 22.04 using ZFS and making the first drive a single vdev. It installed flawlessly. I then made the other drives function as a raidz pool. All went exactly as I expected it to. With this success on a VM, I figured it would be22:56
RonRN18easy to do on a bare-metal machine and it has been nothing but failures.22:56
CroranRonRN18: Nothing but failures!? Have you considered asking for a refund on your ubuntu OS?23:00
