atp7Hi, everyone. I'm a noob trying to play around with Ubuntu on a live usb w/my 2018 macbook pro. I've gotten Ubuntu to boot to the setup screen; however, my inbuilt trackpad and keyboard don't work. Further, a wired external keyboard doesn't seem to work either. What can I do?01:26
enigma9o7[m]goddard: hold down alt when grabbing it with mouse01:28
enigma9o7[m]assuming its partially on screen.01:28
atp7Ubuntu is fully on screen. But my keyboard/trackpad/external keyboard seem to be useless01:28
enigma9o7[m]atp7, good luck, dunno tho, doesnt sound like intended behavior.... like its not recognizing your whole usb bus or something01:28
atp7yeah, I've been having trouble all day. I switched to trying Ubuntu when Fedora wouldn't even boot. Ubuntu's booting, but now i can't input, lol01:29
enigma9o7[m]https://github.com/Dunedan/mbp-2016-linux#keyboard--touchpad might be useful01:31
enigma9o7[m]it says for macbookpro 15 and 16.1 you need special drivers, yours happen to be one of those?01:32
atp7enigma9o7[m], thank you. How do I install drivers onto Ubuntu if I can't interact with it once it boots?01:32

ultramagehi, does ubuntu have an userland or 'world' source code component? I was trying to look it up on launchpad but got utterly lost.06:07
alkisgultramage: what does "world source code component" mean?  Express what you want in more detail...06:14
ultramagealkisg: where does the base stuff, like /bin or /etc come from? did I miss an obvious package called ubuntu-base?06:25
Unit193base-files?06:26
alkisgultramage: for each file, you can ask dpkg to tell you where it came from, e.g. : $ dpkg -S /bin/ls06:26
alkisgcoreutils: /bin/ls06:26
alkisgAnd the opposite, "which files did coreutils ship?" dpkg -L coreutils06:27
alkisgThen with `apt source coreutils` you can fetch its source code06:28
ultramageooh thank you. it is really partitioned across many components, in a very fine way. though some bits, like /etc/hosts and such, do not have a package origin06:29
alkisgYes, e.g. /etc/hosts wouldn't be the same for all users and PCs, so it needs to be generated, not shipped06:30
ultramageyeah I guess those are generated based off of a template, and that template's from a package06:31
alkisgEh, it can be as simple as "the installer asks the user for a hostname, then writes it to /etc/hostname"06:32
alkisgOr it can use templates, or even register itself to `dpkg -S` using ucf and a lot of other advanced stufff06:32

eoli3nHi, on a Dell Optiplex 7490, an upgrade to latest firmware broke hosts acpi14:23
eoli3ni get this in dmesg https://x0.at/HmT9.txt14:23
ograZero_Chaos, i bet the folks in #ubuntu-kernel could tell you ...14:23
Zero_Chaosogra: cool thanks!14:23
eoli3nand hosts screen stays black14:23
eoli3nwhen i disable acpi, hosts screens turns up, but only one core is visible in htop14:24
eoli3ni followed https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI14:24
eoli3ntried all kernel parameters, but nothing worked14:24

eoli3ni contacted Dell which tells me that the latest firmware isn't downgrable, because it's a security one14:25
eoli3nrob0 not here, strange14:25
eoli3nthen i'm wondering how to deal with this : is that a kernel related problem which needs a fix, or the firmware at Dell which needs a fix ?14:26

eoli3nis there a way to get a newer version of the kernel on 20.04 LTS ?14:31

eoli3nrob0 as said, they kicked it "out of scope" but i think they didn't really get what's going on14:50
ioriaeoli3n, try to upgrade the kernel then ( to 5.17) and try again nvidia; but honestly i'd rather try to solve the nvidia + hwe stack issue14:50
ograeoli3n, when you talk about BIOS i hope you mean UEFI ? or do you actually boot these machines with legacy BIOS ?14:50
eoli3nioria i was not clear, sorry for that : the problem with hwe and nvidia is not specifically on that hosts, i have some troubles, then i decided to drop it on all my hosts14:51
eoli3nogra yes14:51
eoli3ni mean UEFI14:51
eoli3nDell doesn't provide legacy support anymore14:52

lotuspsychjeeoli3n: some cases OEM kernels might also benefit some brands14:52
ograand then report bugs for all issues you find14:52

WeeBeyGood morning frens. I've had issues with my laptop going to sleep (suspend); I lose track-pad. Anyway, I installed another kernel to see if this would be fixed magically (5.16.19) and now I get a broken dependencies warning in the Synaptic Package Manager. Any recommendations as to what I should do?15:40
Jeremy31WeeBey: click the Edit menu in Synaptic and choose fix broken15:41
WeeBeyJeremy31, Let me have a look. Thanks for the quick reply.15:42
WeeBeyJeremy31, it is suggesting that the linux-headers-5.16.19-051619-generic will be removed15:43
Jeremy31Hopefully it doesn't remove the linux-image15:44
WeeBeyHrm... Not sure I will apply this yet.15:44
rob0Kernel headers should match the kernel under which the OS/glibc was built, not necessarily the current running kernel.15:45
Jeremy31WeeBey: If that kernel doesn't fix the trackpad, reboot and press ESC or Shift early after and use Advanced Option of the grub menu to boot into an older kernel15:45
WeeBeyHmm. Ok, let me have a look.15:46
WeeBeyJeremy31, Hrm. Removed the headers via apt. Error seems to be gone.15:48
WeeBeyBut suspend still kills the trackpad.15:48
* WeeBey sobs15:48
WeeBeybut thank you for your help Jeremy31 :-)15:49

Joelsorry, I meant basenjis16:09
WeeBeySo it seems this kernel didn't break anything... but didn't fix anything either. :-(16:09
Jeremy31WeeBey: No errors in Synaptic?16:10
ioriaJoel, but the official answer to your Q. is : you installed plasma on gnome, now you live with those running apps16:10
Joelioria I didn't install plasma on gnome.16:10
basenjisthat is unusual16:11
ioriaJoel, are you on Kubuntu ?16:11

WeeBeynot anymore.16:12
Jeremy31WeeBey: open terminal and post URL for>  dmesg | grep -i i2c | nc termbin.com 999916:13
WeeBeyhttps://pastebin.com/h8WF93X616:15
WeeBeyIn other pages, it suggested reloading the input modules after suspend. But it didn't work for me. I haven't tried with this kernel yet.16:16
Joelhttps://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/linux_desktop_guides/kde_desktop_user_guide/ksmserver.html - seems like I should wack ~/.config/ksmserverrc where I do see the programs that get launched16:20
Jeremy31WeeBey: You may have to look at results after suspend to see if there is a clue to it failing16:26

louis543I accidentally deleted the kernel from /boot on an install. I want to chroot in to install a new one, but I have an LVM encrypted root partition. is there a good place to start here? I used cryptsetup luks0pen /dev/nvme0n1p3 encrypted_device to open it up but am lost from there18:10

louis543my attempt to chroot in and fix the broken install with missing kernel has ended here. https://bpa.st/UYRA18:22
louis543trying to purge grub-pc and grub-common hasn't solved it18:22
EriC^^checking18:32
louis543what I did to break this was, I kept getting a disk full error doing apt upgrade, so I deleted some old kernels from /boot. but I don't think I did the upgrade before rebooting, so the kernel is missing.18:33
louis543I should not have been deleting old kernels,, but rather figuring out why the upgrade process would fail when I have a 700 MB /boot partition. that was a bad habit.18:33

enigma9o7[m]hi deadrom its super duper great to hear your greeting!  Thanks so much for sharing.18:36
EriC^^louis543: did you edit the files above recently?18:36
louis543I didn't. I have read about chrooting into an encrypted install requiring some change tot he GRUB config file in my googling of this issue though, but haven't found anything specific.18:37
deadromI'm running a lot of zip/rar instructions from within mc at the moment and it's at a fraction of the speed of 7z x. Now 7z is new and multicore and mc is seriously old. Any other way? Can one integrate 7z into mc or are there patched builds to speed up this kind of operation?18:38
EriC^^louis543: according to the error, one of the files has some syntax error18:38
EriC^^trying to pinpoint it currently18:39
louis543can I just find some generic sample cfg file and plop that in there?18:39
louis543i find it odd that i cannot just apt remove grub18:39
EriC^^louis543: it looks like it went bad after memtest, so try chmod -x /etc/grub.d/{30_os-prober,35_fwupd}18:42
EriC^^then try 'update-grub' and see if it runs without the syntax error18:42
louis543i cheated18:43
louis543i removed the grub.cfg that existed and then tried apt fix-broken install18:43
louis543it worked18:43
louis543the one thing that didn't go as planned was this "cryptsetup: WARNING: target 'encrypted_device' not found in /etc/crypttab18:43
EriC^^odd18:43
louis543 just created that for the purpose of chrooting into my install from a livecd18:44

baldpopeis there an easy way to take the output from apt list --installed and use that as input for apt install ?20:06
baldpopeattempting to create a jenkins node, and trying to mimic/clone the master jenkins build environment20:07
baldpopeI could use awk to print just the package, not sure if that's the best way?20:07
Bashing-ombaldpope: Maybe: dpkg --get-selections will dump a list of all packages you have installed, so you can use dpkg --set-selections to reinstall them all later.20:08
Bashing-ombaldpope: Also there is: debfoster only lists those packages manually installed.20:10
baldpopecame up with this as a potential list to dump back into apt install20:12
baldpopeapt list --installed | awk '{split($0,f,"/"); print f[1]}'20:12

EriC^^squirrel: you could use a quick function in bash, function run() { for i in $(seq 1 $1); do $2; done;}21:01

Minus_OneHi, I have an issue on 20.04. When running apt upgrade, I will sometimes find myself disconnected from my desktop - the tty goes black for a while until things restart, then I am logged back in (possibly because I have auto-login enabled in lightdm) with a fresh session. This also crashes apt unless I am running it in another tty, so I have to run dkpg --configure -a and apt upgrade again. I am not sure what causes this. Possibly a DE package being23:38
