cyberfox | hey experts hope you all doing well. | 11:01 |
cyberfox | how can i upgrade my Kubuntu 21.04 to 22:04 LTS? | 11:02 |
cyberfox | I have tried but it keep saying update your pending updates but when i check there is no updates | 11:02 |
paul_ | Hi | 11:06 |
cyberfox | Hi Paul. hope you are doing well. | 11:07 |
paul_ | Thanx cyberfox | 11:07 |
paul_ | Let me ask you something plz.. | 11:08 |
paul_ | I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird. I'm trying to use IRC chat setting. What is an IRC chat for? | 11:09 |
cyberfox | IRC: Internet Relay chat is a very earlier version Internet chat communication. IRC is designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-on-one communication via private messages as well as chat. | 11:12 |
paul_ | Is irc.libera.chat ....the only server to connect? | 11:13 |
cyberfox | There use to be thousands of channels or rooms but now as per wiki As of January 2022, the largest IRC networks are: | 11:18 |
cyberfox | Libera Chat – around 48.7k users at peak hours | 11:18 |
cyberfox | OFTC – around 19.4k users at peak hours | 11:18 |
cyberfox | IRCnet – around 17.9k users at peak hours | 11:18 |
cyberfox | Undernet – around 13.4k users at peak hours | 11:18 |
cyberfox | Rizon – around 10.5k users at peak hours | 11:18 |
cbreak | funny, freenode is no longer on the list... who would have though... | 11:20 |
paul_ | You have been kind. Thank for this info cyberfox | 11:20 |
Dragnslcr | cyberfox- you would have to upgrade to 21.10 first | 12:01 |
Dragnslcr | !eol | 12:01 |
ubottu | End-Of-Life is when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop. Make sure to update Ubuntu before it goes EOL so you get updates promptly for newly-discovered security vulnerabilities. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOL and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more info. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades | 12:01 |

BluesKaj | Hi all | 13:46 |
=== person is now known as person__
person__ | I installed Kubuntu 22.04. | 15:07 |
person__ | I can see that vym is available via apt-get, but Discover cannot find it. | 15:07 |
person__ | Am I doing something wrong? Is Discover limited in its packages? | 15:08 |
person__ | Why doesn't Discover know about vym? | 15:09 |
person__ | The message from discover is: "vym" was not found in the available sources | 15:13 |
BluesKaj | person__, try muon instead of discover | 15:16 |
person__ | thanks for that advice BluesKaj. | 15:17 |
person__ | Is Discover known to be broken? If so, why is it installed? | 15:17 |
BluesKaj | discover is still somewhat buggy | 15:18 |
IrcsomeBot | <DarinMiller> person__ as per your original question, this reddit thread describes why Discover does not list all apps: https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/szspkx/discover_not_listing_all_installed_packages/ | 15:18 |
person__ | Okay, muon finds vym just fine. | 15:19 |
BluesKaj | yeah, that's why I use it, mostly for reference | 15:20 |
person__ | I read the reddit post, thank you. It looks like Plasma-Discover is limited and it is not considered a bug. | 15:22 |
person__ | This seems pretty darn user-unfriendly to me. Did I miss a warning somewhere in the docs or on the website that Plasma-Discover by design will not show all available packages? | 15:24 |
person__ | Why doesn't the <not found> "error" message from Discover mention this limitation or refer the user to Muon? | 15:24 |
BluesKaj | good question ...if an app works properly I use it if not I don't | 15:26 |
person__ | This (apparently undocumented, notwithstanding the reddit post) situation would be very bad for a new Linux user or someone who is not computer savvy. | 15:27 |
person__ | I am new to KDE Plasma but I happened to know about apt-get already. Someone with less expertsie would probably conclude that vym is just not available. | 15:28 |
BluesKaj | that's why we're here :-) | 15:29 |
=== engpa1978 is now known as engpaulalexander
person__ | Thanks. I appreciate your help BluesKaj. But my point is I shouldn't have had come and ask here for something that could have easily been remedied but slightly different text in the Discover message. | 15:30 |
person__ | "Try Muon" | 15:30 |
person__ | I don't mean to diminish your helpfulness BluesKaj | 15:30 |
person__ | I want to recommend Linux/Kubuntu to people whom I know who are skeptical of it and not computer geeks like myself. This situation with Discover is not good. | 15:32 |
BluesKaj | if there is afix for discover I haven't been made aware of it. Discover has been problematic for quite a while. | 15:32 |
person__ | Discover doesn't necessarily need a fix. A simple notice that it doesn't find all packages so try Muon would be sufficient. | 15:34 |
person__ | Alright, I know I am am complaining about something that is done a lot by volunteers and is open source. I'll stop. :> | 15:34 |
person__ | If I don't want to become a KDE developer and submit a git pull request, where can I submit a bug report suggesting a change to Plasma-Discover? | 15:35 |
BluesKaj | !bug | 15:36 |
ubottu | If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its official !flavors, please report it using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs. | 15:36 |
person__ | Thanks ubottu | 15:36 |
BluesKaj | ubottu is a bot | 15:37 |
person__ | So am I. | 15:38 |
person__ | I guess I passed the Turing test. | 15:38 |

Pokey | Hey Kubuntu, having issues with what appears to be polkitd and not sure how to solve them. I am using a remote connection (x2go and occasionally xRDP) and I keep getting popups every few moments to authenticate things like updating package repositories, running a wifi scan etc, and things like the WiFi toggles do not work. This is only when remoted. When using a local session, this is not an issue. Research I have done online shows just adding each | 15:53 |
Pokey | popup which appears to a list of permitted popups when remote. This solution is not acceptable for me as I only ever use this machine remotely, I want to blanket allow everything, just like what happens when logged in locally. Any ideas on how I might fix this? | 15:53 |
alkisg | Did you report the issue to the x2go community? AFAIK they're using a non-standard session script which lacks some necessary things | 16:07 |
Pokey | alkisg: I have, didn't get too far though. X2go or xRDP, makes no difference. x2go is using a custom start command as it doesn't support Plasma out of the box. | 16:11 |
alkisg | Yeah essentially this is about fixing bugs in them, not in kubuntu | 16:27 |
alkisg | Some policykit ...policies differentiate between local and remote user; they should try to declare the user as local for a full desktop session | 16:28 |
Pokey | alkisg: I wasn't necessarily looking to report a bug in Kubuntu, and this is more than just x2go, as I said, same thing with xRDP. Is there some parameter or set of commands I can call in a script to appropriately launch the X session myself, as the end user? | 16:30 |
alkisg | The normal session commands are `grep -r ^Exec /usr/share/xsessions/` | 16:31 |
alkisg | But there's a reason that they override them, e.g. to handle printing or shared folders | 16:32 |
Pokey | alkisg: looks like that just defines some localisation then calls /usr/bin/startplasma-x11 which is the same command I have x2go configured to execute | 16:36 |
alkisg | Pokey, at that point, if you run e.g. loginctl, you'll see that the user is "remote", while for a proper desktop session, it should be "local", that's the basic difference | 16:39 |
alkisg | So either the remote apps need to be more clever and launch a local session, or kde and the whole OS needs to be more clever and declare policies that support remote desktop sessions for "non-local" users | 16:40 |
alkisg | You'll need to work with the x2go guys for this, they'll have more experience to spend a few days and resolve things | 16:41 |
alkisg | (or xrdp) | 16:41 |
Pokey | loginctl I do not see any kind of local and remote. I see tty and seat which I could see being it | 16:42 |
alkisg | E.g. the x2go developers have added many things to MATE to work better remotely | 16:42 |
alkisg | There are parameters to loginctl to show remote/local, I don't remember them off-hand, they shouldn't be hard to find, e.g. in its man page | 16:43 |
Pokey | the only manpage and online reference I see si seats and tty seats being local and tty being remote | 16:48 |
Pokey | is* | 16:48 |
Pokey | I'll discuss further with them about it | 16:48 |
Pokey | Thank you | 16:48 |
