CaioHas anyone played the game Nethack?01:02
arktvrvscaioxg? never heard of it01:22
arktvrvsi jest. but no never pplayed it01:22
CaioIt's a roguelike, with classic ASCII graphics. Seems like fun01:33
CaioBut I can't use some commands because X11 doesn't see the Alt key as modifier for a command02:01
arktvrvsmight be your window manager grabbing it02:14
arktvrvsmenu > settings > window manager tweaks02:15
arktvrvs> accessibility > change it02:15
arktvrvssee if that helps02:15
CaioThank you for your input! I have changed the key, though, to 'None', but Alt continues grabbing the window. I wonder why02:21
arktvrvsmaybe try terminal > preferences > advanced and disable menu shortcuts or something?02:33
arktvrvsOR02:34
arktvrvshmm no that is weird02:34
arktvrvsmaybe you have to restart x? if those two things dont work i dunno02:34
CaioAlt no longer access the menus. Still, the game doesn't recognise alt as a modifier02:44
arktvrvscan you try escape? or does it just exit02:45
arktvrvstheres an xterm option altSendsEscape but the xfce terminal i dont think has it02:46
arktvrvsand i dont know enough about terminals to know how to work around it02:46
CaioIt's okay02:48
CaioThank you02:48
CaioGoodbye02:57
xu-irc32wI have CloudReady Chrome OsFlex (12 gpt partitions) running on HP 14 with MrChromebox UEFI Bios. I have also installed Xubuntu 22.04 independently and it runs fine.  There is enough disk space for installing both OsFlex and and Xubuntu.  Is it possible to add Xbuntu to run in a dual boot mode into the existing OsFlex?03:34
jayjayhi!03:41
xu-irc32whi'03:41
jayjaythese are my first messages on irc03:43
jayjayloving it03:43
xu-irc32wI have not been on and irc chat for a very long time, perhaps 15 years... A bit rusty.  Anybody here with multi boot experience with Chromium Os?03:43
bodicceaI wonder why xubuntu-desktop,update-manager, gufw, atril (20 packages total, I don't have flatpak nor snap installed), depends on xdg-desktop-portal. Just stupid lazy/useless dependency, or do I miss something ?09:41
Unit193webkitgtk pulls that in.09:43
bodicceaThis is just not normal...09:44
bodicceaI mean, this is what I call a lazy dependency.09:52
Unit193Well, webkit stuff will fail to actually launch without it unless you use an env var.09:57
bodicceaWell, maybe, but it just breaks "df", by not having implemented statfs() for /run/user/1000/doc filesystem. This is how a single/simple command that people use every day does not work anymore.10:05
NeoCortex4after upgrading to 22.04 I had to set intel_idle.max_cstate=4 as Kernelparamter in the grub.cfg otherwise m screen keeps flickering like crazy, is that a known issue?10:58
DarkTrickI'm using XUbuntu within Parallels Desktop (VM) on a mac. Problem: scrolling using two fingers on the touchpad is way too fast. I tried x stackoverflow threads and tried fiddeling with xinput, but I can't get it to go slower (only faster). Is there any trick to make scrolling go slower?14:00
pmjdebruijnDarkTrick: https://kb.parallels.com/en/6909 ?14:02
DarkTrickpmjdebruijn, hm, didn't help14:08
DarkTrickI event changed the mac scrolling speed there without success14:09
DarkTrick(what is "inertia scrolling" btw? :D) 14:09
pmjdebruijnhttps://io.bikegremlin.com/11541/linux-mouse-scroll-speed/14:10
pmjdebruijnDarkTrick: no clue, you've got the Mac :)14:10
pmjdebruijnDarkTrick: you do have the Parallel Tools installed?14:10
DarkTrickah, I think without the "inertia scrolling" it got a tiny bit better (much better control now)14:10
DarkTrickpmjdebruijn, tools are installed14:11
pmjdebruijnbut fundamentally this is a question for Parallels, not as much as14:11
DarkTrickpmjdebruijn, tried that. but it's already at "1" (slowest).14:11
DarkTrickThe tool itself works. When I set it to 2 it's basically like pushing the "end" key on the keyboard .D14:12
DarkTrick:D14:12
pmjdebruijnyou really should ask Parallels about this14:13
pmjdebruijnyou can stick around and see if anybody else comes up with anything though14:13
DarkTrickBut shouldn't there also be a ubuntu-based tool?14:14
DarkTrickI basically had a similar problem with a real hardware mouse, that I eventually fixed by actually buying a new mouse14:15
pmjdebruijnwhy should there be something in uxubuntu if that's not where the problem is14:15
DarkTrickxorg?14:16
pmjdebruijnmost likely Parallels is botching something14:16
pmjdebruijnbtw, have you tried with Parallels Tools btw?14:18
pmjdebruijnwithout*14:18
DarkTrickI would expect the OS to provide some scroll sensitivity setting like on windows14:18
pmjdebruijnDarkTrick: it does, and you've set it to lowest14:18
DarkTrickbasically, yes. Same problem14:19
pmjdebruijnhttps://wiki.archlinux.org/title/libinput#Mouse_wheel_scrolling_speed_scaling14:20
pmjdebruijnbut at this point, I'm just googling for you14:20
pmjdebruijnmost stuff is concerned with making it faster, not slower14:21
pmjdebruijntoo fast seems to be fairly parallels specific14:21
DarkTrickpmjdebruijn, I will dig around some more14:23
DarkTrickpmjdebruijn, thank you very much for your quick help!14:23
DarkTrickpmjdebruijn, at least I got it a little better by turning off inertia scrolling! :)14:24
pmjdebruijnDarkTrick: keep in mind, given that's you're probably paying Parallels, why not get your moneys worth by asking them about it :)14:25
DarkTrickpmjdebruijn, still trial period14:28
DarkTrickpmjdebruijn, trying to figure out how to turn my mac into an actually usable computer :D14:29
udzguruhi. since the update to 22.04 my firefox takes 5 minutes instead of 5 seconds to start. does anyone have an idea? 14:31
pmjdebruijnyeah14:32
pmjdebruijnit's a snap14:32
pmjdebruijnas opposed to a deb14:33
pmjdebruijnudzguru: presumably you still have a harddisk as opposed to an SSD?14:33
udzguruno it's an SSD14:33
pmjdebruijneven on a highend NVme drive it still takes 6-7 seconds, which is bizarre slow14:33
pmjdebruijnudzguru: it's the first start that's most painful14:33
pmjdebruijnafter that it's faster14:33
pmjdebruijnudzguru: old/lowend cpu?14:34
udzguruit takes 5 minutes. every time after a boot. 14:34
udzgurucore i5 8th gen ... so no14:34
pmjdebruijnthat's unexpectedly slow14:34
udzguru16gb ram14:34
pmjdebruijn8th is old... but should be fast enough14:34
udzgurubefore the upgrade it took like 5 seconds14:35
pmjdebruijnyeah that's the Deb14:35
pmjdebruijnI know14:35
pmjdebruijni'm not amused by it either14:35
NeoCortex4i3 7th gen here takes about two seconds to open14:35
pmjdebruijnhttps://snapcraft.io/docs/debuging-startup-performance14:35
pmjdebruijnNeoCortex4: on first start?14:35
udzguru5 sec vs 5 min ... that feels like i am using a pocket calculator and not an i5 with 16gb of ram ;) 14:35
pmjdebruijnNeoCortex4: on my i9 with NVMe it takes like ~6-7sec14:36
NeoCortex4pmjdebruijn nah, first start (ever) took about 10 seconds14:36
pmjdebruijnhuh? 14:36
pmjdebruijnoh 10 seems plausible yes14:36
pmjdebruijnbut that's still tragicly slow for a primary application14:37
NeoCortex4yeah thats true, cant we kick out the snap and install firefox manually?14:37
NeoCortex4nevrer looked into it since im using chrome14:37
udzgurui heard that installing the deb instead of the snap helps.14:37
pmjdebruijnthere's a ppa, but that gets uninstalled, unless you do some tricks14:37
NeoCortex4udzguru im pretty sure that will help14:38
udzgurujeah you need to do repo-pinning 14:38
udzguruannoying af 14:38
pmjdebruijnudzguru: I would be really interesting to get that performence trace from you though14:38
udzgurui can try ... gimme a sec (or some minutes? :P)14:39
pmjdebruijnyeah np14:39
NeoCortex4how do you do a ptrace?14:39
udzgurusnap run --trace-exec firefox according to the url above14:40
udzguru(the generated trace is from a "second start" then. so no "first slow start")14:41
udzgurudo you have a preferred pastebin? 14:42
pmjdebruijnno14:42
pmjdebruijnbut rebooting for the first start would be more interesting though14:42
udzguruwell .. then let me quickly reboot ;) 14:43
udzguruso ... reboot done. starting firefox with snap run --trace-exec now14:46
NeoCortex4just for some comparison: https://pastebin.com/hyDnzmt814:46
udzgurunot sure why but does this really need the password in the commandline? 14:47
NeoCortex4well it asked me.... i typed it in14:48
NeoCortex4btw this is on intel i3 gen7  samsung nvme14:48
pmjdebruijnudzguru: maybe you'14:50
pmjdebruijnre extreme slowdown is caused by bad name resolving or something along those lines14:50
udzgurudid you close firefox after the call? 14:51
udzgurubecause I don't get those times14:51
udzguruin your log14:51
udzguruah ok ... now i closed firefox and the times appeared14:53
udzguruone moment ... need to start it again ... but the times are muuuuuuuch slower than with NeoCortex4 14:53
udzguruhttps://home.schweiberger.org/paste/?7e6237fec2b44b20#BycHdknUxkYWFA3DfHgNyuXU3wHCGnp22evCbg443NqD14:55
udzguruheres my log14:55
udzgurutotal time: 272 seconds14:55
NeoCortex4uff14:56
udzgurujeah ... starting firefox is a REAL pain since the update14:56
NeoCortex4i have no idea what that could be. i say, get rid of the snap and get the ppa back14:57
udzguruthe first lines irritate me ... where it complains about something with libreoffice not being accessible 14:57
udzguruand then theres the flatpak line that is weird as well14:58
pmjdebruijnudzguru: /snap is on your SSD as well?14:58
udzguruthere is no harddrive in this pc14:59
udzgurujust SSD14:59
pmjdebruijnor is that the mount in your homedir14:59
pmjdebruijnudzguru: you might want to try that again in a clean homedir, so just create a new user, and try this again14:59
udzguruok. can do that.15:00
udzgurualso reboot? or is changing user enough? 15:01
udzguruand does the user need to be sudoer? as you need to enter the password when doing the log? 15:03
udzguruok ... that was waaaaay quicker15:09
udzguruhttps://home.schweiberger.org/paste/?ce9987b3047dc727#8UDEFDc83qBpQD1CsYPCaxcWda1drA9BDzG2rLyfneU515:10

siixhey folks. trying to fix my dual-boot problems between xubu 22.04 and win 10. initially the xubu installer gave me a windows 10 entry that didn't work (can't find command "drivemap"), so i ran update-grub again and now os-prober isn't finding windows 10 at all21:28
siixwindows is on another drive and it is *not* showing up in efibootmgr .. honestly i'm not sure what that indicates and why the installer found it but update-grub doesn't21:29
siixi have added GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false to grub's default config and i see from the output that the prober is running21:30
