WaVWhen I was running Ubuntu 18.04 I had a .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart that ran "xdg-screensaver lock" once my user was automatically logged in. I upgraded to 22.04 today and have the same exact file in the same location of my filesystem, but it doesn't lock my screen on boot. The command appears to work by itself. Is there another way to do what I'm trying to do or am I missing something?03:27

Guest92i am using Ubuntu 20.0403:39

Guest92the application is ParaView (a postprocessing application for scientific computations).. actually i compiled it along with another tool callled OpenFOAM03:40
Guest92the issue is that the ParaView is missing the maximize button on its top right window corner..03:40
Guest92it has only minimize and close buttons.. but it was having it previously03:40
Guest92may i know what i could have done wrong please?03:41

Guest92i have not applied any themes.. and i doubt that it has any theme support03:41
Guest92by the way, ParaView's gui is built using Qt by its developers.. could that be reason for this?03:42

perithHello All, I am struggling with something I would appreciate your support. I have Ubuntu installed on a drive, with a FAT32 partition to share files with windows. The partition is mounted in /windows and fully working, but it doesn't show up anywhere, not in the file manager, nor on the desktop. Any way to show the partition somewhere so I can access it without manually going to /windows every time? Thanks11:00
tomreynperith: i think if you *don't* have it in /etc/fstab then you can actually access it from the graphical file manager11:06
tomreyni mean mount, not just access - access should already be possible now11:07
perithtomreyn, thanks for replying. I have just checked fstab with gedit and it is in there11:09
tomreynright, that's what i assumed.11:11
perithtomreyn, commenting out that line would be enough?11:12
tomreynperith: i assume you would at least need to restart the desktop, too, i'm not sure how gvfsd and the file manager interact there11:13
perithtomreyn, let's give it a go. I am rebooting, thanks11:14
perithtomreyn, thanks it worked. Do you know how to automatically mount that device + Google drive (set up via Accounts in Ubuntu). Every time I boot the machine I have to click on both of them to mount11:17
=== Gambino is now known as STYNER
=== STYNER is now known as Gambino
tomreynperith: hmm, i don't think you can control automounting for those user mounts for specific mounts, just generally. and generally auto-mounting everything i would not recommend for security reasons.11:20
tomreynso if you want to automount it system-wide then you'd be back to doing it with fstab, i think11:21
EriC^^if you use disks, you can set it up, behind the scenes it just adds a line in fstab11:21
EriC^^(the program disks)11:21
perithtomreyn, If I do that again in fstab then I will not have the desktop icon again wont I?11:22
tomreyni assume not11:22
tomreynbut you could have a bookmark / favorite in nautilus set to its mount point11:22
perithEriC^^, tomreyn I am restoring the line in fstab but changing the mounting point from /windows to /media/username/ lets see if it works11:26
tomreyn /media/username/ is not a good location since this is where other user mounted file systems would also be mounted in subdirectories11:27
tomreyn<tomreyn>  /media/username/ is not a good location since this is where other user mounted file systems would also be mounted in subdirectories11:28
perithEriC^^, tomreyn ok changing that worked. tomreyn any other adviced location?11:29
tomreynthe subdirectory of /media/username/ where it was mounted previously could be ok, i assume11:29
tomreynusually that's /media/<username>/<volumename>11:30
tomreyni mean "file system label", "volume name" is a windows term, i think11:31
perithtomreyn, oh yes sure, it is mounted in that way11:31
periththe volume is called MEDIA, so it is mounted in /media/myusername/MEDIA11:31
tomreynthat should be ok, i guess11:31
perithcould I do the same for the Google Drive?11:32
tomreyni have no experience with google drive mounts, but i assume so11:33

perithI might have another question, hope someone can help. Every time I log into windows, it sees all my Linux partitions and asks if I want to format them. Any way I can hide all the non FAT32 partitions?11:43
tomreynperith: as far as i know, windows tries to access file systems on partition types it thinks it understands. maybe you have set an incorrect partition type for those partitions?     sudo fdisk -l      should tell. please note we only support ubuntu linux here.11:48
perithtomreyn, the disk is partitioned as ext4 for Ubuntu and FAT32 for MEDIA, windwos is on another HD on its own and apparently it sees the ext4. I though there was something to do on the Ubuntu end to hide the partition11:50
tomreynperith: i'm not referring to file system types, but to partition GUUIDs.11:53

lantech19446I have a multipart problem here but I think the part I need to figure out still is the ubuntu part. I'm running ubuntu 21.10 inside a docker container that's being used as an apache web server. I can't get ssl to work on it when I try to do a2enmod it tells me that the module I'm looking at in the list doesn't exist. I can't find where to find this package on ubuntu so I can reinstall it everything14:48
lantech19446just says oh it already comes with ubuntu just do a2enmod. Does anyone know where this might hide some repo or something14:48
gordonjcplantech19446: don't do that14:50
lantech19446what do you suggest gordonjcp ?14:51
gordonjcplantech19446: use something like traefik or caddy to do ssl termination, and keep all that sorry mess away from your application server14:51
gordonjcpwith the added advantage that your reverse proxy will probably cope with all the cert generation and renewal for you14:52
lantech19446I don't use an orchestrator though we're not that big it's a one server job14:53
gordonjcpdoesn't matter14:54
gordonjcpjust use docker-compose14:54
gordonjcpsave yourself so much hassle14:54
gordonjcplantech19446: I get that if you're running a single webserver, using docker-compose, a reverse proxy, and all that seems a bit like weeding your herb box with a Bobcat14:55
gordonjcplantech19446: but tomorrow you need to host another app server14:55
lantech19446it looks like maybe caddy is the way to go so I'd just make my reverse proxy to <server-IP>:443 and it's up and running14:55
gordonjcplantech19446: next week, you'll be hosting those two, and then some Python stuff that runs behind nginx14:55
gordonjcplantech19446: can't comment too much on Caddy because I use Traefik14:56
lantech19446I work in a small public library so highly unlikely but I'm studying for DevOps14:56
gordonjcplantech19446: but yeah basically, don't expose any services to the outside world from your app server14:56
lantech19446traefik says it needs the orchestrator to pull the config from14:56
gordonjcpaha14:56
gordonjcpyou don't *need* that, you can stick it all in a file14:56
gordonjcpbuuuuuuuuuuuuut14:56
gordonjcpif you go using docker, it'll read labels off the app server's docker container14:57
gordonjcpwhich will steer Traefik's routing etc14:57
lantech19446but wouldn't that automatically tell it to use the wrong port then?14:57
gordonjcpno14:57
gordonjcpit'll "guess" that you want port 8014:58
gordonjcpif you don't, you can specify that with a label14:58
lantech19446so they'll hit the reverse proxy on 443 and then it'll pass it to the apache server on 80 do I even need my SSL certs?14:58
gordonjcpexactly14:59
gordonjcplantech19446: let me just remove the password and I'll show you a real one15:00

Kheprabut again, I'm not sure you can do anything. did oyu read anything somewhere suggesting you could "hide" the partition from windows so it wont offer to format it?15:52
