jhutchinsPerhaps they just haven't published the latest version.00:39
jhutchins... of minimal.00:39
jhutchinsarraybolt3[m]: ^00:40
arraybolt3[m]jhutchins: Would be nice, it seems like it would help a lot of people, as I've seen more than one person say they wished the mini.iso still exists. But sadly, from the link that Ubottu gave, "Canonical and the Ubuntu project never officially supported the mini.iso ; it was produced as a by-product of building the debian-installer. As the Ubuntu Server image now uses subiquity, the build process that built mini.iso is no longer used, thus00:42
arraybolt3[m]why this installation media is now old. "00:42
jhutchinsI suppose you could install with the old media (probably smaller anyway), then upgrade.00:46

BadAtomporton: if the shell is choking on the number of files, you may need to use xargs02:27
ravagefind with exec is usually a good workaround02:33
jhutchinsI suspect porton simply needs to walk away and come back later.02:38
jhutchinsTHIS is why terabyte drives are a bad idea.02:38
wezWhat's wrong with terabyte drives?02:39
jhutchinsAhnberg: Yes, install linux as a full dual-boot OS, or as a VM.02:39
jhutchinswez: They hold huge numbers of files and people don't organize them in any way.02:39
arraybolt3[m]wez: You mean the part where they show up as 950-some-odd gigabytes?02:39
jhutchinswez: They can take a very long time to format, or to erase, or to encrypt.02:40
arraybolt3[m]Oh, sorry, I missed the conversation, ignore me.02:40
jhutchinsThey are a single point of failure that results in massive data loss.02:40
arraybolt3[m]I have 12 terabytes of spinning rust sitting on my desk right now. 🙂02:41
jhutchinsarraybolt3[m]: How long would it take to zero them?02:41
jhutchins(Write zeros to all spaces.)02:41
arraybolt3[m]I ran a full badblocks test on it when I first got it, it took days.02:42
arraybolt3[m]But so far it works fantastic. Holds my backups and a copious collection oflinux distro installers.02:43
arraybolt3[m]I do keep it pretty well organized, though, maybe that' why I've never had a problem with it.02:44
jhutchinsI just dealt with recovery and distribution of 98GB.  I had to babysit it for hours, then let the copies run for hours.  Multiply that by 200 for what's in MY storage server.02:46
jhutchinsFunny thing, 98 GB overran a 128G drive, but ended up only using 96 GB on the 512.02:47
arraybolt3[m]LOL I know the babysit for hours problem. I had a 250 GB HDD from a Windows 7 laptop start to die, so I dd'd it into an image file on my 12 TB drive... over USB 2.0, 'cause I didn't have the presence of mind to take the dying HDD out of the laptop and plug it into a USB 3 port on my desktop with an adapter I had. I have a cat who loves to jump on stuff, and the 12 TB drive was in a precarious position at the time, so I just sat there and02:48
arraybolt3[m]watched it for what felt like forever.02:48
jhutchinsI do seem to remember some schemes to break up large collections of files that exceeded the bash command buffer.02:49
arraybolt3[m](I booted the laptop from a live USB if you're wondering how on earth I got dd on Windows 7.)02:49
jhutchinsI used rsync, which was good since I had to restart several times.02:50

arkanoidon first run of snap version, the software asked me if I wanted to import stuff, but then it failed to find anything09:33

arraybolt3[m]OK. Then just do "lsblk" and figure out which drive is your main hard drive.09:40
tomreynarkanoid: i think you should be able to just copy them there. make sure you stop all running copies of firefox first, though.09:40
arraybolt3[m]gomboligo: You'll see an ID code that looks something like "sda" or "nvme0n1" in the same row as your main drive, make a note of that code.09:40

Bugiesarkanoid, old profiles should be in  /home/$USER/.mozilla/firefox/09:45
tomreynarkanoid: normally, the firefox snap pakcage should have migrated your existing firefox profile to the snap location on launch. it's unclear why this did not take place in your case.09:46
tomreynarkanoid: the bottom post at https://askubuntu.com/a/1369903 shows what's printed to a terminal where the firefox snap is started from on first launch. maybe yuo had no default profile?09:51

arkanoidtomreyn: I confirm the existence of a profile folder that ends with ".default" in $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/09:55

UbuntuAutistHi. I have a problem where my front USB ports make my WiFi adapter sometimes crack. When the plug the adapter in the rear USB ports directly connected to the motherboard, it works fine. Has anyone else ever experienced something like this?11:11
UbuntuAutistI mean sometimes make my WiFi adapter crash, not crack.11:12
murmelUbuntuAutist: is it crashing while in the front usb?11:14
murmelif yes, maybe the cable to those frontusb is not the best anymore11:14
UbuntuAutistmurmel sometimes. And as soon as i put it in the rear USB ports which are directly on my motherboard, its fine.11:14
UbuntuAutistmurmel! Yes, that's what I thought. I just wanted to rule out it being Ubuntu!11:14
murmelUbuntuAutist: sounds to me, that's a cable issue then.11:14
murmelUbuntuAutist: definitely not, as it's just a usb port as any other11:15
UbuntuAutistI was thinking perhaps there is a electricity suppy to the ports issue.11:15
UbuntuAutistRight, I see.11:15
murmelUbuntuAutist: could be, but that should still be a cable issue11:15
jadenlianif i change /etc owner to root  just so it requires a passwd    does it recreate any issues?11:15
UbuntuAutistMy phone also sometimes won't charge from the front USB ports. Its a new phone with a beefy battery11:15
murmelas it's literally just splitting 1 usb port to 211:15
murmeljadenlian: are you talking about /etc as the "folder" or the whole directory?11:16
murmelUbuntuAutist: sounds like that's an issue with your board then11:16
murmelare they maybe only usb2?11:16
UbuntuAutistjadenlian, apps that don't run as root who's settings are located in subfolders of /etc/ will probably fail.11:16
jadenlianmurmel: ok11:17
UbuntuAutistmurmel they are USB3, and funny enough, I had this same problem with my old computer.11:17
jadenlianubuntuautist ok11:17
UbuntuAutistThanks for your help murmel! :)11:17
jadenlianmurmel: i thought it was just the folder11:18
murmeljadenlian: there are config files under /etc which do matter to non root programs11:18
UbuntuAutistjadenlian /etc/ is where all the programs settings are kept that are not user specific I believe.11:18
jadenlianmurmel: i see11:18
murmelso /etc itself is owned by root, but below that there are config files which don't need to be under the owner of root11:18
murmelUbuntuAutist: you are correct sir11:19
UbuntuAutistWell, bye everyone! :)11:19
jadenlianubuntuautist: yes11:19
jadenlianso i theres most likely issues with some program if i change the owner to root11:20
jadenlianso no way to put a passwd there  just trying things11:20
ravagejadenlian, dont mess with permissions if you dont have to. especially with default system folders11:21
murmeljadenlian: yes if you want to "hide" something you can change the permissions of individual files11:21
murmelthere are quite a lot of people who have their samba password for example11:22
jadenlianmurmel: ok11:22
jadenlianmurmel: like i said just trying things but i dont really have to11:23
murmelso for example chmod 500 /file would change it that the owner can read write, but nobody else11:23
murmeljadenlian: hopefully you will be careful :) it's easy to break stuf11:23
ravageand hopefully you have a backup so we dont have to fix your experiments here later ;)11:23

MagicFabHi I need some help. An email with porn was sent to our Loco team mailing list. Is there any way to remove its thread from the ML archives ? Not sure who to contact, I haven't connected here for a while.15:02
strkMagicFab: or install ubuntu :)15:03
strkI just tried popos randomly15:03
murmelstrk: so why are you not in their support channel then>?15:03
MagicFabmurmel: which channel ?15:04
strkright, doesn't look like there's an IRC channel (or there's a #popos but with a single nick in there, and no topic)15:04
murmel!popos15:04
ubottuThe Ubuntu channels can only provide support for Ubuntu and its official flavors, since other distributions and derivatives have repository and software changes. So please use their dedicated support venues, for example: Linux Mint (#linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org), Kali Linux (#kali-linux), and LXLE (#lxle)15:04
MaikMagicFab: that wasn't tailored at you15:05
oerheksthey are with #system76 ?15:05
oerheksMagicFab, any administrator can edit the message15:05
oerheksbut undoing the sended mail, nope15:06
Maikmurmel: strk knows about that since he was notified with the same message earlier today15:06
strkyep, it looks like #system76 exists and is populated, if any admin could add that to the bot fact it would be helpful15:07
murmelstrk: they have mattermost or matrix channels (mattermost at chat.pop-os.org)15:07
oerheksstrk, added, but i am not a bot15:08
MagicFaboerheks: I haven't logged in the admin panel for a ML for a while, but never seen option to delete from the archive there. Regarding "un-sending", yeah, I know ! :|15:09
MagicFaboerheks: tx.15:09
strkoerheks: did I say you were ?15:11
strk(thanks!)15:11
jhutchinsMagicFab: Did you say what mailing list manager you're using?15:15
bhubanwhy i cant see my integrated graphics (amd) information in my laptop? I am using ubuntu 20.04.15:18

dcHi guys. I am running 20.04, my monitor was working one week, the next it wasn't. I've some other cables. It's possible some updates ran which broke it - but im not sure. Any ideas on how to debug this further? Of course I have tried some of the options on stackoverflow17:43
lotuspsychje_dc: wich ubuntu release are you on?17:43
dcI've tried re-installing the nvidia drivers, and im just trying to remove them and reboot to see what happens. No luck so far17:43
dc20.04 LTS17:43
lotuspsychje_dc: tell us at wich stage your screen goes off?17:43
dcit does not come on lotuspsychje_17:44

lotuspsychje_dc: post boot or grub either?17:44
dclotuspsychje_: i have no way of knowing as i can't physically see anything on mys creen from this machine17:44
dcenigma9o7[m]: how am i able to give you nvidia driver version on cli17:45
enigma9o7[m]inxi -G17:45
enigma9o7[m]but if it wasnt nvidia-340 then my idea isnt it anyway17:46
dci think i messed up uninstalling the nvidia drivers17:46
enigma9o7[m]But if the screen isnt on for BIOS/POST stuff, then its not an OS problem.17:46
dcbecause i ran the re-install instructions and it's not reinstalling them17:47
enigma9o7[m]Its a broken monitor or perhaps computer.17:47
dcI don;t have another monitor to test unfortunately, but the other port on the monitor works ifne17:47
dcenigma9o7[m]: yep, i guess you are right if i dont see BIOS/POST17:47
dcdont think i have hdmi to displayport lying around to see if it's the port hm17:48
ioriadc, is that a desktop pc, right ?17:48
dcyeah17:48

dci plugged it on the onboard17:49

iorialol17:49
enigma9o7[m]doh17:50
ioriaintegrated is automatically disabled when you have plugged a dedicated card17:50
dccan you help me reinstall the drivers before i test this hypothesis17:50
dchttps://askubuntu.com/a/109973617:50
dci used these instructions earlier, then ran the purge again a bit later, and now it's not reinstalling as far as i can see17:50
ioriathat's for the ppa.... but first plug correctly the cable17:51
dcok one moment17:51
ioriaon 20.04 i don't think (in general) you need that ppa anmore17:53
dcyeah now it works lmao.17:53
ioria*anymore17:53
dcfeel like such an idipt. i never use this monitor unless im photo editing... so when i moved it i completely forgot i had a dedicated card :D17:53
ioriano, it's a common mistake17:54
dcresolution looks good so i think the nvidia graphics are there17:55
dcor at least im satisfied for now17:55

PrunersI can't figure out where applications actually reside in Ubuntu.   There are the applications of course, but I don't think the applications are actually there, I think those are more like aliases, aren't they?20:10
arraybolt3[m]Pruners: Generally you shouldn't need to mess with the guts of your application stuff, apt and snap do that for you. But if you're interested, the majority of your application's executable files are hanging out in /usr/bin.20:11

PrunersI have a useful text application named "Left", which came down into my Downloads folder.  The application runs fine from that Downloads folder, but I do not normally run applications from my Downloads folder and would prefer the application in a proper folder for an application.  But if its a hassle to move it, I can leave it right there.20:27
ravage.local/bin for example20:28
oerheksany folder that is in your Path is oke..20:28
tomreynecho $PATH20:29
tomreynmv ~/Downloads/Left ~/.local/bin/20:30
enigma9o7[m]~/.local/bin is probably best, but also if you create ~/bin then reboot it'll be in your path20:30
tomreynls ~/.local/bin/Left20:30
geirhait's the same with .local/bin, it only gets added to PATH during login if it already exists20:30
geirhaa misfeature20:31
enigma9o7[m]misfeature?20:32
Prunersmisfeature is an interesting word20:32
geirhayes, first time you install something in .local/bin it won't work. Confusing newbies20:33
geirhashould just add it to PATH unconditionally instead20:34
enigma9o7[m]The downside being, it'd be slightly slower every command you entered.20:36
enigma9o7[m]slower than it needs to be20:36

oerheksthat ancient card .. i wonder if building 340 gives any benefit23:34
tomreynnot forcing you to (not) do anything, you could install an older version and pray it doesn't have security bugs and is still compatible.23:36
cbreakor get a newer GPU? There must be tones of faster ones that are basically free because they're also ancient.23:53
cbreakor download the binary drivers directly from nvidia. For example, cuda .deb also ships with drivers.23:54
Hashyeah tried all that23:59
Hashcan't seem to build nvidia driver23:59
Hashoh well. looks like ubuntu won't be my distro anymore.23:59
