If you wanted Linux containers on Windows Server, run a Linux VM and put LXD in that. [20:54] Hey, though, for those Windows Server 2019 users, the VM+LXD idea might actually work. I guess WSL2 is going to be a bit lighter than a VM+LXD... maybe. [21:00] 5 years ago i would say ' horror', windows supporting ext4 natively [21:00] arraybolt3[m]: ^ update: https://4sysops.com/archives/install-subsystem-for-linux-2-wsl2-on-windows-server/ . [21:00] or exfat in the kernel :-D [21:01] It just seems like WSL2 is not going to ever be stable enough for server use. It would be like trying to run Windows applications on a Linux server and relying on WINE. [21:02] (Albeit, WSL2 is probably quite a bit more polished than WINE since Linux is open-source and Windows isn't, but you get my point - trying to make one kernel act like another is not the most reliable thing in the world.) [21:03] (I mean, I could be wrong - Linux does have a very stable userspace interface, so it might be OK.) [21:07] Also, people could just run a Linux server with LXD and then put a Windows Server VM on top of it. That would be even more secure IMO. [21:07] wsl is never meant to run gui programms [21:08] wsl *is* getting support for graphical programs [21:08] officially [21:08] I saw someone manage to run Anbox in WSL the other day. Didn't work very well, but they did get the graphical window to appear. [21:09] oerheks: Another reason to run Linux on baremetal and put Windows Server in a VM. More functionality, better compatibility, possibly better security. [21:11] hggdh, i guess with wsl3 ? not official yet, there are hacks though [21:12] even with wsl2 (at least under W11 -- which I am still required to run, until we get the kinks off native Linux laptops) [21:15] I am now able to fire off graphical thingies off wsl, with small issues, like mouse reverts to a right-handed one although my W11 has it as left-handed, and screen resolution goes to native W11 resolution) [21:16] the screen resolution is the worst for me -- my laptop is 4k, and the graphical windows get VERY SMALL fonts [21:18] but i do not use graphics a lot, my life is on the command line on WSL [21:21] heh, just ran 'code' under WSL2, works nicely [21:28] disregard, it ra the Windows 'code' :-( [23:45] landscape is seriously iffy right now
