arraybolt3[m] | Hey all. I'm wondering, are all of the fonts included in Ubuntu Studio free for commercial use? I'm noticing at least one of the packages included by default is in multiverse. | 16:12 |
---|---|---|
Eickmeyer[m] | arraybolt3: Good question. It's pretty easy to check. Which ones in particular are you worried aobut? | 16:21 |
arraybolt3[m] | Eickmeyer: Not any particular fonts, but all the fonts as a whole. I just need to know if I should be hunting through /usr/share/doc/<font-package>/copyright for any font I see that's in multiverse, or if they've been vetted to avoid any surprises. (A friend of mine wants to do print-on-demand and I got her on Ubuntu Studio, so the MASSIVE collection of built-in fonts is looking pretty appealing right now.) | 16:23 |
arraybolt3[m] | If I do need to check the copyrights, that's fine. | 16:23 |
Eickmeyer[m] | Well, I can tell you that anything in main and universe is fair game. I'm trying to figure out which one is in multiverse. | 16:24 |
arraybolt3[m] | fonts-larabie-uncommon is one, there's one that has "nonfree" in the name, also. | 16:25 |
arraybolt3[m] | So there's multiple multiverse fonts. I guess what I should do is just find all of the installed fonts that are in multiverse, extract the copyright files, and have a read - reading through the files for the two packages I mentioned was WAY easier than getting through GitHub's TOS, and I survived that. (Both fonts were good for commercial use.) | 16:26 |
Eickmeyer[m] | Larabie has free unlimited use. | 16:27 |
Eickmeyer[m] | So, anything in multiverse can't be there unless it can be freely redistributed for non-commercial use. | 16:28 |
Eickmeyer[m] | It basically just doesn't have a "free" license such as GPL, MIT, etc. | 16:28 |
Eickmeyer[m] | That's the only difference between universe and multiverse is the license. | 16:29 |
arraybolt3[m] | Makes sense. But the license is the catch - I need commercial use, not just non-commercial use. But again, it shouldn't be that big of a deal for me to just read the licenses. | 16:29 |
Eickmeyer[m] | I see. I should've clarified, I meant commercial or non-commercial. | 16:30 |
* Eickmeyer[m] has been up since 4:30am | 16:30 | |
arraybolt3[m] | Oh, that makes sense. | 16:31 |
arraybolt3[m] | > * <@eickmeyer:matrix.org> has been up since 4:30am | 16:31 |
arraybolt3[m] | Man, I didn't go to sleep last night at all, so I feel you. | 16:31 |
Eickmeyer[m] | Reason being: The mirrors are owned by commercial and non-commercial entities, so the licenses have to be OK for both. | 16:31 |
arraybolt3[m] | Nice. Thank you, that makes me happy! Thanks again for the awesome OS. | 16:32 |
Eickmeyer[m] | No prob. :) Trying to get some stuff done with it, but a nap might be in order. | 16:34 |
arraybolt3[m] | Eickmeyer[m]: +1 on the nap, I've still got 9 packages to backport and three days to do it in, so I'm having to ramp up my speed through the roof. Thankfully, it's going OK so far. God is good. | 16:35 |
Eickmeyer[m] | I've got one package to revive (hopefully, working with a DD on this one potentially) and going to be helping Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix become an official flavor hopefully. | 16:36 |
arraybolt3[m] | Ubuntu Cinnamon? Wow, that's neat. I've played around a tiny with with the Cinnamon desktop. Still prefer KDE, but Cinnamon looked like a close runner-up at first glance. | 16:38 |
Eickmeyer[m] | Yeah, they've been a thing for 3 years and just needed some help and a push in the right direction, so we'll see how it goes. | 16:38 |
arraybolt3[m] | How close do you think they are to their first official release? 23.04? | 16:40 |
arraybolt3[m] | (OK, I'm probably holding you up at this point, and I'm definitely WAY off topic for this room, so if this is annoying, sorry, I'll get back to backports.) | 16:40 |
Eickmeyer[m] | If we play the cards right, they could do a 22.10 release. | 16:40 |
arraybolt3[m] | Wow, that sounds cool. Hopefully I'll get the time to beta-test (I'm learning to not bite off more than I can chew, but I want to do EVERYTHING lol). | 16:41 |
arraybolt3[m] | (Beta-test Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix, I mean.) | 16:41 |
Eickmeyer[m] | It's available now. | 16:44 |
Eickmeyer[m] | ubuntucinnamon.org | 16:44 |
Eickmeyer[m] | Anyhoo yeah.... offtopic. | 16:44 |
