ash_worksiwhen I run `which bitlbee`, it says: /usr/sbin/bitlbee00:00
ash_worksiwhen I run `bitlbee` it says: -bash: /usr/local/sbin/bitlbee: No such file or directory00:00
ash_worksiwhy is it (still) looking in /usr/local ?00:00

jhutchinsash_worksi: One way to check this is to read the makefile.00:01
sarnoldash_worksi: this was important thirty years ago when unix systems didn't have negative dentry entries and lookups for "file not found" had to hit a disk every time or something similarly stupid -- and when hard disks were very slow00:02
ash_worksithanks sarnold00:02
jhutchinsReally that simple?  Cool.00:02

jhutchinsardakc: What did you try to do?  How did you try to do it?  What did you expect to happen?  What happened instead?00:09
ardakcjhutchins: i'm selecting yaru-dark theme for legacy-application from gnome-tweaks after i opening ubuntu settings then its selecting yaru theme automaticly00:10
ardakcjhutchins: i'm using ubuntu 22.10 daily build00:11
jhutchinsardakc: All I can say is that dark themes generally have lots and lots of problems, they don't smoothly apply to all aspects of desktop ops.00:11
* jhutchins uses xfce and doesn't mess with themes. One less thing to restore.00:12
ardakci selecting yaru-red-dark theme from gnome-tweaks and after i open gnome-settings its selecting yaru-red theme for me00:14
ardakci dont like this :/00:14
ardakcwhy isn't there a decent linux distribution00:15
sarnoldbecause you haven't created it yet :)00:16
ardakci cant downgrade ubuntu 22.10 to 22.04?00:17
arraybolt3[m]ardakc: Downgrades are not supported. Also, 22.10 has not yet been released and is still in alpha stages, so bugs are to be expected. You should usually never deploy a development release on a production system.00:18
ardakcarraybolt3[m]: absolutely you're right.00:19
ardakcthats my mistake00:19
ardakcstrange why i didn't install ubuntu 22.04 lts00:20
arraybolt3[m]Well, I get shiny new thing syndrome too. And after having daily-driven a development release in a virtual machine for quite some time, I'd be tempted to try it on my physical hardware too. I guess now we both know why it's not a good idea.00:21
guivercardakc, #ubuntu-next is for kinetic support; this is for released products only  (not testing products)00:21
arraybolt3[m](Er, my production hardware - I use the development release on physical hardware, but only for testing)00:21
* arraybolt3[m] immediately joins #ubuntu-next since I forgot that channel existed00:21

nino_hey03:24
nino_anyone here?03:24
arraybolt3[m]Hey.03:24
arraybolt3[m]There's usually lots of people here 24/7.03:25
arraybolt3[m]Anything we can help you with?03:25
nino_question. can I use ubuntu desktop as a server?03:29
arraybolt3[m]nino_: Yes, but Ubuntu Server is better suited to that.03:29
arraybolt3[m](If you're trying to use your desktop to double as a server, that should work just fine.)03:30
nino_I'm using ubuntu desktop. and install cockpit so I can access it over lan and installed unifi controller via cockpit. will that be fine?03:31
arraybolt3[m]I don't know what Unifi controller and cockpit are, but from what I know of running servers like an SSH server on Ubuntu Desktop, it sounds like it will work.03:31
arraybolt3[m]Yeah, that looks like it will work.03:33
nino_Im using ubuntu desktop right now headless03:34
arraybolt3[m]Headless? Like, you're away from the monitor, or you don't have a monitor attached at all?03:34
arraybolt3[m]If you're using this system as just a server, you'd probably get more performance out of it if you installed Ubuntu Server. If it does double-duty, then using Desktop should be fine. It's really a matter of preference AFAICT (though I have noticed that Ubuntu Server gives you some more control over things like what services to restart when a system update finishes).03:35
nino_yes, and access the ubuntu desktop via local ip address.03:36
nino_as of now its working but im not sure if its 100 percent okay. thats why I chatted here03:38
nino_need some of your advices03:38
arraybolt3[m]nino_: OK. Are you using the system as a desktop at all?03:38
arraybolt3[m]Actually, here's something that may help.03:39
arraybolt3[m]Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Desktop are the same OS. The only difference is in how they're configured and what software is installed by default.03:39
arraybolt3[m]So there's no reason that installing server software on Ubuntu Desktop shouldn't work.03:39
arraybolt3[m]At the same time, you can install a desktop environment on Ubuntu Server and convert it into a desktop system.03:40
arraybolt3[m]So they're that interchangeable.03:40
arraybolt3[m]If everything looks like it's working OK, it's working OK, and you're good. If something isn't working right, then try to fix it and holler here for help.03:41
nino_thanks bro. still new to ubuntu environment.03:41
arraybolt3[m]The only thing I can think of that could be a problem is that, on a desktop release, updating your system automatically restarts whatever needs it, while on server, it lets you choose what to restart. So you might end up with your server processes getting restarted when you update, but in your use case scenario, that's probably not a problem.03:41
arraybolt3[m]nino_: Yeah, no problem. Hope you like it!03:41
arraybolt3[m]But yeah, it's not like Windows and Windows Server where they're two different operating systems. Ubuntu is just one thing. Server, Desktop, and Flavours are all the same OS under the hood.03:42
arraybolt3[m]They just are tailored for different uses - whichever one is closest to what you need, use it and tweak it to your liking.03:42
nino_I think I saw a manual update option on the settings menu.03:42
nino_I kinda like the linux environtment.03:43
nino_its like most of the process is transparent. you can see what you run03:44
arraybolt3[m]Agreed.03:45

de-factoare there any efforts to fix pulse audio in ubuntu? since many releases audio sliders seem to wildly jiggle around by themselves causing annoying crackling sounds07:15

goddardits all in my home directory17:55
TheBigKits not even my install. is an install of a dev17:55
goddardahh17:55
TheBigKbut shes not that skilled in core linux stuff... she was gone for a year... thats why its outdated17:55
TheBigKwe did backup... its not even same hardware now17:56
goddardhardware wise that should be a non-issue17:56
goddardlinux does a good job in those situations17:56
TheBigKi know...17:56
TheBigKbut was confused that do-release-upgrade suggests me jammy...17:56
goddardLTS to LTS?17:57
TheBigKnah... its hirsute17:57
TheBigKno lts17:57
TheBigKbut its gonna be if i succeed17:57
goddardworse case you can get one of those app copy programs17:57
goddardforget the name17:58
TheBigKim confident i gonna get this upgrade to work...17:58
goddardgood luck17:58
TheBigKi will consider alternatives if im stuck17:58
TheBigKbut i doubt it...17:58
TheBigKi mean... what does do-release-upgrade of complicate stuff... it does basically the same i did manually... change sources list and run the upgrade... obviously ddoes some checks and stuff...17:59
TheBigKbut is it much more than that?17:59
TheBigKafter it does cleanups...17:59
TheBigKbut thats not hard to do either17:59
goddardis it a python script?18:00
goddardmaybe you can look at the source18:00
goddardi never have18:00
TheBigKme neither :D18:00
TheBigKim glad that system booted... always tricky from a tar to a running system :D18:00
TheBigKwith efi, cryptsetup and all that shit18:00
TheBigKbut i like the new hardware... thinkpad p15... pretty fast machine18:01
tomreynfunhouse: cool, hope this works out. 10 gb isn't a lot when you run services other than just sshd or something small.18:03
morhookzoom is working much better with wayland! good news!18:10
jhutchinsWhat do you use to monitor web page up/down?  I was thinking of all of the features of Nagios, and it really is overkill for what I need.18:37
leftyfbjhutchins: pingdom. Though suggesting 3rd party services really are offtopic here18:40
leftyfbjhutchins: you could also just write a script/service that monitors the port or using something like curl with a 0 exit code18:43
TheBigKit did work btw... im on jammy now18:49
TheBigKflawless actually18:49
jhutchinsleftyfb: I'm looking for a native package like nagios that I would run on an ubuntu server, as opposed to a commercial service.18:54
jhutchins...and yes, the answer to how to do almost anything is "you could write code to do that". I don't write code.18:55
bloodfart69I am reinstalling my kernel. My system has luks + lvm. Which kernel is recommended?19:01
leftyfbbloodfart69: the latest HWE kernel available on your ubuntu release19:03
tomreynjhutchins: maybe netdata https://www.netdata.cloud/ https://learn.netdata.cloud/docs/agent/collectors#web19:04
tomreynbloodfart69: different nickanme, please, still.19:04
bloodfart69tomreyn,  oh yeah that's right I forgot19:05
=== bloodfart69 is now known as RickRoll
tomreynthanks. please remember.19:05
RickRollWill do. That said, do I have to manually compile the generic kernel so I can enable luks and lvm?19:06
tomreynno19:07
RickRollCan I tweak it? I want to add some stuff to it if possible19:07
jhutchinsInteresting how many alternatives to pingdom are offered.  Must be something people don't like about it.19:07
jhutchinshttps://github.com/louislam/uptime-kuma looks interesting19:07
leftyfbRickRoll: what things?19:08
tomreynhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel19:08
RickRolltomreyn, yeah I tried that. I tried also building it on my own without running zcat /proc/config.gz > .config because simply it didn't exist19:09
RickRollLike I said before, this thing is screwed beyong belief19:09
RickRollleftyfb, I want to add binary blobs. enable it so I can have config.gz; makes things easier19:10
leftyfbRickRoll: huh?19:10
RickRoll.bin stuff19:11
leftyfbRickRoll: .bin stuff for what? In the kernel? I don't understand what you are talking about19:11
tomreynsame19:11
RickRollhttps://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/AMDGPU I need POLARIS10 inside the firmware loader19:12
tomreynyou are referring to amd graphics card firmware, and you want this loaded when?19:13
tomreynis there anything that doesn't work for you with default ubuntu kernels?19:14
RickRollI somehow was able to get the GRUB loader to work and when I tried booting the initramfs, it complained about logical ubuntu volume not existing19:15
RickRollIt's there19:15
tomreynwhat is "logical ubuntu volume" and how does this related to amd graphics card firmware?19:16
tomreynand what was the exact error message you saw when booting a default ubuntu kernel?19:16
RickRollIt relates for my system to work correctly. I need and want to have luks + lvm with my proper firmware19:16
tomreynluks and lvm do not require firmware19:17
RickRollYeah they don't19:17
tomreynwhat's the hardware you have there?19:17
RickRollbut for my system to work, I need to make sure the init supports luks + lvm is working correctly19:17
leftyfbRickRoll: that has nothing to do with your graphics19:18
leftyfbRickRoll: install Ubuntu 22.04 with LVM/LUKS. What happens when you do this and boot into the OS?19:18
RickRollTried that and I don't like how it sets up my partitions19:19
tomreynbut it boots fine, unsing a default ubuntu kernel?19:19
tomreynand using the firmware which comes with ubuntu?19:20
leftyfbRickRoll: that has nothing to do with your graphics or kernel or anything else. Setup the partitions the way you want19:20
leftyfbRickRoll: once you get ubuntu installed with LUKS/LVM and it boots, feel free to come back here if something isn't working correctly19:21
RickRollIf I were to do it with the normal installation with it encrypting only swap and leaving out everything else, yeah it does work19:21
leftyfbRickRoll: you can choose how you want it setup19:21
leftyfbfeel free to do so19:21
RickRollThis is why I am here19:22
RickRollI did that19:22
tomreynthe desktop installer has an option to encrypt everything but /boot19:22
tomreynnot "only swap"19:22
tomreyn(in fact there's no option for encrypting just swap)19:22
RickRollleftyfb, it doesn't right now as we're completely off topic19:22
leftyfbRickRoll: ok, so you have Ubuntu 22.04 desktop installed? What isn't working?19:22
bray90820Not sure if this is the right place for this but I have a VNC server setup with Virtualbox and every time I turn on screen sharing in ubuntu Virtualbox failes to connect remmina says connecting to virtualbox VM and never connects19:23
RickRolltomreyn, I did that. I ran crypt setup, created the pass, ran pvcreate, ran lvcreate creating tmp, var_log, swap, and root19:24
RickRollRan the ubuntu installation which I let it format those partitions19:24
RickRollSo root was installed in /dev/mapper/ubuntu-root /19:25
RickRollleftyfb, What won't work is the fact it is complaining about logical volume not working19:26
RickRollOr rather it doesn't exist19:27
tomreynRickRoll: how about /boot and /boot/efi ?19:27
leftyfbRickRoll: ok, do you tries setting up LVM/LUKS manually using the live cd/usb and then ran the install afterwards?19:27
leftyfbs/tries/tried19:28
RickRollThis is the command I run all the time. "sgrub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=UBUNTU"19:28
RickRolltomreyn, In other words yes it does exist19:29
leftyfbI don't understand why you're doing all this manually through the command line?19:29
tomreynRickRoll: on separate partitions?19:29
RickRollYep19:29
RickRollleftyfb, I like to see things visually.19:29
tomreynand unencrypted? with a proper file system?19:29
leftyfbRickRoll: I prefer things to work19:29
RickRollleftyfb, I do too lol19:30
tomreynyou could just do a default installation first, see the things that were setup visually, and then recreate it with the modifications you'd like.19:30
RickRolltomreyn, Do you want to see the device tree?19:30
tomreynit could be useful at analyzing your "unknown error"19:31
leftyfbRickRoll: so go through the GUI installer and set i up the way you want19:31
RickRollYes, cause I've done manually installation more than 100 times.19:32
RickRollIsn't there a backdoor to the kernel?19:32
tomreynof ubuntu?19:32
tomreynhuh?19:32
RickRollFor debugging purposes. It's why I want ubuntu19:33
tomreynyou can debug linux if it fails to boot. this is not ubuntu specific.19:33
cellphonegodsno(nods)19:33
RickRollplanning on running gdb to debug my archlinux from ubuntu. I wanted to enable the GDB SCRIPTS in the kernel19:33
RickRollAll my systems work. But I am wanting to learn how to debug kernels19:34
tomreynyou seem to be jumping between topics, i don't think i can help here.19:34
leftyfbRickRoll: that's pretty beyond the scope of the help provided by this channel19:34
Guest32I've read that ubuntu (as well as debian) only uses MD5 hashes to verify package installs and gpg is only used for source files. Is that true?19:34
RickRollleftyfb, yes19:35
leftyfband as tomreyn pointed out, you seem to be jumping between topics and can't seem to stay on one troubleshooting track19:35
tomreynGuest32: no and no19:35
tomreynGuest32: would you mind pointing us to the source of this statement?19:35
RickRolltomreyn, yes you're right. But I was curious if there was a way to record the data and paste it here when the kernel goes into panic mode19:35
tomreynhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelDebuggingTricks19:36
Guest32I don't remember where I found it, but googling about how debian / ubuntu verifies packages got me the impression that gpg is only used for dsc files and otherwise MD5 hashes are used from the deb file. Also a blog post found online stated that apt doesn't use gpg by default.19:37
tomreynRickRoll: the fact that i'm right about you jumping topics doesn't solve the underlying issue, though.19:37
RickRolltomreyn, I was explaing I have experience with stepping through code and what not. I am hoping to expand my knowledge to debug hang kernels things that are not responding, etc. Which is happening right now19:39
RickRollBut doesn't mean I am the best XD19:39
leftyfbRickRoll: good luck19:40
leftyfbRickRoll: I really think you are digging WAY too deep just to get Ubuntu installed19:40
Guest32If I download a deb file through apt 'apt-get download foo' does it still verify it or is it only verified when the package gets installed?19:41
leftyfbRickRoll: if getting ubuntu installed isn't your main goal and you're more interested in just learning about the kernel and kernel debugging, I suggest /join #ubuntu-kernel or #linux19:41
tomreynGuest32: you seem to be referring to how apt repositories and getting and verifying software from those works.19:43
tomreynGuest32: have a look at http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jammy-updates/ - you see a Release.gpg and a Release file. The former is a signature on the latter. Both of these files will be retrieved by apt when it looks for updated packages for an installation of the ubuntu 22.04 'jammy' release19:44
RickRollleftyfb, It isn't as I can do that no problem. I am going to read the article you sent, and I am going to record if it goes into panic19:44
RickRollThank you both19:45
=== G30RD14 is now known as G30RD13
tomreynGuest32: apt will use gpg to verify the signature on the "Release" file. the Release file contains checksums in multiple formats (hash functions), including MD5 and SHA-1, which are nowadays considered weak, but also SHA-256, which is not. apt on 22.04 LTS will use the sha256sum hashes to learn more about which packages are available for this release.19:47
tomreynGuest32: ...at the locations provided in the Release file. are you following?19:47
RickRollI am going to reboot and boot into ubuntu and see if it works19:48
tomreynGuest32: apt-get download foo     does also verify the "foo" package through this cryptographically secure chain, yes.19:50
Guest32I get what you're saying, and understand (at least I hope) that even if MD5 hashes are used for the file, it won't matter because the gpg signature is used to make sure the MD5 hashes are legitimate.19:50
tomreynthat's incorrect, MD5 should not be used, it is weak, even for hashing19:50
tomreyni mean for checksums / hash collisions19:51
sarnoldhmm I thought apt used them all19:51
jhutchinsActually, it looks like checking with curl or wget might be just as easy.  Just have to get notification working.19:51
tomreynsarnold: you mean it verifies the md5 and sha-1 checksums in addition ot the sha-256 ones?19:51
tomreyni don't know this for sure, but it seems like a waste of energy to do so19:52
tomreyncertainly if it does them all, we can expect that the result will be AND'ed19:52
tomreyni.e. if there is one mismatch then the total operation fails19:53
sarnoldtomreyn: yeah, that's my belief, and it does feel silly to me if that's how it work :)19:53
tomreynwe'll have to send ubuntu to the international climate change court, if so19:55
=== ootput5 is now known as ootput
RickRolltomreyn, Got it to work. Was missing linux-headers, needed to update my init using the command and had to create /etc/crypttab22:14
